I once wrote here, I think a few days ago, that the story will change if prominent northerners become targets. Now the Emir has promised to help track down BH seeing that the chiecken is roosting nearer home. What were they doing before now?

Overwhelmed by the death toll of last Friday’s multiple blasts in Kano, Emir Ado Bayero broke down in tears yesterday. Boko Haram claimed responsibility for the attacks, which killed 166 persons.

The emir gave out his emotions while making a welcome remark to President Goodluck Jonathan and members of his entourage, who paid him a condolence visit in his palace in Kano. The President said that the attack on any part of Nigeria is an attack on the entire country.

The Emir, who was immediately shielded from the camera by his security guards as he sobbed, later took control of himself, sat down on his chair , cleaned his glasses and continued with his speech.

According to Alhaji Bayero, the Emirate Council is firmly in support of any step that the Federal Government will take to arrest the suspects in order to bring peace and tranquility to Kano State in particular and to Nigeria in general.
He said: “On our part, our efforts in organizing prayers in all over the state will be continuing. In fact, we are intensifying our efforts right now and praying that the Almighty Allah in His mercies will eliminate this and any other future occurrence of the ugly incident.

He urged the President to consider the size of Kano, including the state’s economic activities and therefore increase the number of security agents, particularly policemen. He noted that 8000 policemen in the state is very much inadequate for the size. The President, who was accompanied by the Minister of Defence, Dr Bello Haliru Mohammed and the National Security Adviser (NSA), Gen. Owoye Azazi, said that they are in the state to console the emir and the good people of Kano over the Friday incident.

He noted that though the crisis of Boko H aram had been with in the country for quite some time, the country has never experienced any explosion in Kano State before last Friday’s incident.“I am here to assure that the Federal Government will not rest until the perpetrators of this act are brought to book,” he added. According to the President, the suspects are neither spirits nor ghost, saying they are persons who live in our midst. To this end, he charged Nigerians to look at the activities of their neighbours with a view to knowing what they do daily.

He urged the people to report any suspicious character or movements to the security authorities, adding that by so doing, they will help the government and the security bodies overcome the forces of those who are responsible for this act of violence. “All what we need is the cooperation of our people to help give relevant information to the security agencies” while urging the people to police themselves and report suspicious characters before they cause damage to all. “Any attack on any leader or any part of the country is an attack on all of us. Let all of us decide to collectively fight these terrorist. They cannot win Nigeria.”

To the dead victims, the President said that they didn’t die in vain while praying the Almighty Allah to give their families the courage to bear the loss. He said that the Federal Government will strengthen the security in Kano and other parts of Nigeria, even as he noted that the act of suicide bombing is relatively new in the land. He stated that the Federal Government will work with the Kano State Government to see the assistance it will give to the state while pledging the resolve of the government to flush out these acts of terrorism in the land.

Meanwhile, the President said that some arrests had been made, adding that the backers of Islamist sect were being pursued.“Some arrests have been made. Some died in the process. Some were suicide bombers,” Jonathan said in a BBC interview during the visit to Kano. “There must be people who are sponsoring them. Terrorists all over the world have their source of income. “We are also looking into those areas to make sure that the so-called Boko Haram…those who are encouraging them, those who are sponsoring them, shall be brought to book.”
Asked about their membership, he said: “nobody can say for now, because you know that they are not organized armed forces.”

In another development, tragedy was averted yesterday when two cars were diffused of bombs that were planted inside them at a strategic place in the state capital. The two cars were neatly parked very close to Chula Oil filling station, along the Eastern bypass, and at a NNPC Mega filling station at Hotoro area. They were abandoned until residents raised the alarm and called the attention of policemen, who diffused them. Following this, the security operatives decided to diffused the bomb planted inside the cars

The Police spokesman, ASP Magaji Majiya, could not be reached for comment. Meanwhile, a social media, The Will, pasted a copy of the Islamic sect’s warning, which was contained in leaflets Boko Haram circulated in Kano metropolis yesterday. In it, the group warned that it would attack security personnel, their agents and Christians.
The terror group also warned that it is not Boko Haram, but should be called Jamatul Ahlil Sunnah lit daawati wal Jihad.

The message reads: “We are the people being called the illegal name -Boko Haram- but our name is Jamatul Ahlil Sunnah lit daawati wal Jihad.“The message to the people of Kano is to remember that police in Kano have at most times arrested our members but referred to them as gunmen or armed robbers.“So, mind you that we will attack anyone who is arresting our members.“We are, however, only fighting security personnel and their agents including Christians.”

Ondo State police command has apprehended four men including a herbalist for allegedly kidnapped and murdered of a 25-year-old hunchback for money ritual. The suspects, according to report, had lured the hunchback man telling him that they had wooed a lady on his behalf and that he should accompany them to visit her.

The men had acted on the instruction from their herbalist who said they should look for a hunchback person and remove his hunchback and bring it for money ritual. The unsuspecting deceased had followed the young men from Ago-Alaye, a village near Araromi-Obu town in Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State to a forest near Oniparaga where he was murdered and his assailants later severed his chest and back and removed the hunch

The deceased’s father, Oladapo Dowo, said when he did not see his son, Adeoye, he reported the matter to the police at Ararom-Obu Police Station. In the course of police investigation, one of the suspects was arrested. The suspect later confessed that Adeoye had been killed for money ritual. The suspect said two of his friends, now at large, had escaped with the hunch removed from Adeoye chest and back, adding that it was the herbalist who asked them to look for hunchback person when his gang contacted him for money ritual. However, the herbalist denied the allegation.

Briefing newsmen at the weekend, the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Sani Magaji, said the suspects were arrested following a report lodged at Araromi-Obu Police Station by the deceased’s father that his son with hunchback was missing. According to him, the Ore Police Division subsequently took over the matter, which led to the arrest of the suspects. One of them, he said, later confessed that he was responsible for the kidnap and led the police to the scene inside a forest where the decomposing body of the deceased was found.

Also arrested by the command was five-member of a robbery gang and four suspects who were Fulani that specialize in stealing cows in Akure and its environs. The robbery gang and their leader were said to have shot dead two police officers within the last one month during series of robbery operations in Ondo and Ekiti states.
Their recent operation took place along Emure/Eporo Road in Owo Local Government Area during which a police inspector was shot dead by the gang members.

The police boss assured that some of the fleeing suspects would soon be tracked down and would be made to face the wrath of the law

Builds N2m home for widow

Every year, people facing sundry challenges get help from a women group in Ebenezer Anglican Church, Nnewi, Anambra State. The Women of Ebenezer have picked up bills for the poor. They have sheltered a good number, and have given hope to many.

This year was the turn of Mrs Ezinwanne Onwuasoeze, a widow of over seven years. In the course of her widowhood, she lost a child, even as she struggled to raise her remaining three male children. All she had for shelter was a mud building surrounded by glitzy buildings of the rich. Then one day, the mud house collapsed following a heavy downpour.

Mrs Onwuasoeze wept, naturally, but when the Women of Ebenezer Anglican Church built her a three-bedroom bungalow, she wept again, for joy.

The women were never consulted to assist the widow when her mud house collapsed some years ago. She never went about asking for help from the church because according to her, “there is too much hunger and problem in the land”. She simply packed her bags and left for Ozubulu to live in her parents’ house.

She lacked words to show appreciation to the women, and prayed God to bless them. She still does her petty trading in palm nuts at the Eke Amangwu Nnewi market in order to cater for her children.

Mrs Onwuasoeze was a devoted member of the church. In spite of her challenges, even living far away in her parents’ hometown, she remained committed to church activities, always giving her best. That was what moved the Women of Ebenezer to help her.

“Mrs Onwuasoeze is so committed in the church,” said Mrs Nkiruka Chukwuma, wife of the Vicar Ebenezer Anglican Church, Nnewi. “When her family house collapsed, she left to her fathers’ house but yet she did not miss any church function. We were surprised by that and when it comes to our yearly ritual of uplifting our fellow women especially those challenged like widows, we remembered her dedication and commitment to the things of God and decided to attend to the most pressing need she had, which was accommodation.

“And in that challenging moment some other Christian blocks demanded that she abandon her faith to join theirs before they would assist her. But in spite of all the enticement she refused to listen to them. All this information came when we had already nominated her to benefit from our yearly largess to widows. She was not the only one we nominated but because hers was a house, so pronounced everybody is now talking about her but we have started business for people and have done much more things for others and still doing”.

Mrs Chukwuma concluded thus: “Our widowhood programme is a yearly project and we don’t play with it. We request monies from those who are indeed wealthy among us and in the society at large to assist those who have nothing but are dedicated in the service of God. We call it Widow’s Seminar. The house started one year ago precisely May, 2010 when the foundation stone was laid by the Vicar of Ebenezer Anglican Church Nnewi, Reverend Wilfred Olisa Chukwuma.”

Chairperson, Home and Abroad Meeting of Ebenezer Anglican Church, Nnewi, Mrs Chinyere Osinike said the project was executed with love hence they were able to complete it quickly.

“We did it out of love for Christ who charged us to look after the welfare of the widows,” she said. “Nobody said anything against it when the idea was mooted but they all rallied round and assisted the poor woman abandoning their own personal concerns for the betterment of another individual. Remember everybody has his or her own problem especially in a rustic village like this. So we give all the glory to God”.

Mrs Osinike prayed God to remember all the families of the women who laboured to ensure that a fellow woman was not put to shame.

Project Manager of the house, Mrs Ifeakandu Monica was happy that it was completed in record time.

“I am happy not only because we have completed the house which I built as if I was doing it for myself. I abandoned all I was supposed to be doing in my house to be the contractor and site engineer of the house even when I did not go to school.”

Dedicating the house recently, the Vicar, Reverend Chukwuma commended the women for positively impacting the lives of others, and urged that more people in hopeless conditions should be given hope.

“This is a landmark celebration because this widow, Mrs Onwuasoeze, has been relieved of over 60 per cent of her worries; her children’s too. I appreciate all that contributed in one way or the other to ensure that this project is dedicated today. I pray for God’s elevation in their families and businesses in Jesus name.

“A good Christian would always be remembered by God if the person must wait on the Lord. This woman here did not know she was going to be in her own house this year but today she is a proud house owner and that is God for you.”

Newsextra gathered that there were some challenges while building the house. At a time, thieves invaded the compound and stole all the aluminum materials but the women went into prayers, and the rogues brought the items back.

Many high-rise buildings surround the poor widow’s compound. A neighbor had this to say about the condition of the woman:

“Her husband died some years back and later her mud house collapsed because probably she could not cope with the patching her late husband used to give it to avoid collapsing.”

On why no assistance from them till the women of Ebenezer Church came to her rescue, he said: “No we have assisted her. We helped her by keeping some of her property that can be destroyed by the rain in our house”.

Mr Emenike Ben who works in the Teaching Hospital Nnewi confirmed that the major problem facing the woman now was how to purchase a meter to enable Power Holding Company of Nigeria not to disconnect her house.

Another neighbour in the village who came out of her massive compound when Newsextra visited, Mrs Oge Emenike, a Catholic, commended the Anglican Communion women for their profound humanitarian gesture to a widow.

About the widow, she said: “I have done my best for her as much as I could. Again, whenever I am around because I work in Nnewi North Local Government, I would plead with the PHCN not to disconnect her light and I have done that time without number. I explained to them that the building was built by a church and not the woman. I also thank the woman who supervised the Project Monica; she really worked with the fear of God”.

The Lord Bishop of Nnewi Diocese, The Right Reverend Professor Godwin Okpala and wife, Mrs Eugenia N. Okpala, Nnebuife were happy that the clergy and wives in Nnewi diocese are indeed committed and dedicated in the gospel of reaching out to the needy in the society. They described the gesture as encouraging and worthy of emulation.

Occult church members arraigned

Twenty-three members of the Millenium Gospel Mission, a church where human skulls and other vital parts of human body were discovered in Osogbo last Wednesday were yesterday arraigned in an Osogbo Magistrate Court for alleged conspiracy and breach of public peace.

The accused persons, including a septuagenarian, were said to have, on January 11, 2012, at Oremeji Street, Alekuwodo area, Osogbo, conspired with one another to commit misdemeanor and caused insult to Christian religion in public by urinating on a N20 note, an act which the court described as fetish.

Police prosecutor, Sergeant Elisha Olusegun told the court that the accused persons were referring to one late Jacob Oladele as Jesus Christ and also conducted themselves in a manner likely to cause breach of peace by using drums to call people in the area to buy pap, describing the activities of the church as unlawful.

According to Olusegun, the accused persons committed offences contrary to and punishable under Sections 516, 204 and 249 (1) of the Criminal Code, Cap. 34, Vol. II, Laws of Osun State of Nigeria, 2003.
But the accused persons pleaded not guilty to all the allegations levelled against them, saying their acts were orderly and did not affect the general public negatively.

Counsel to the accused persons, Mr. Bola Ige made attempt to move an oral bail application but the presiding Magistrate, Mr. Olusola Aluko ordered him to file a formal bail application. Ige, however, called the attention of the court to one of the accused persons, Jumoke Oladele, who is nursing a baby and pleaded with the court to admit the nursing mother to bail. He also urged the court to remand his clients in the state Criminal Investigation Department (CID) office instead of the prison custody.

But the prosecutor opposed the application, saying the CID had only two cells, which were already congested, arguing that the police had to vacate two offices to accommodate the accused persons for a week. The magistrate said, “in law, there is a principle of equality and in case where one is given a special treatment, the essence of justice has been defeated. They must be treated equally.”

He therefore ordered that the accused persons be remanded in Ilesa Prison custody and adjourned the case till February 29 for mention.

We need legislation to eradicate rituals, cannibalism in Yorubaland- Erelu Lola Ayonrinde -Raises posers on Oba Funso Adeolu’s corpse

Erelu Tunwase AyonrindeErelu Tunwase of Ode-Remo, Chief Lola Ayonrinde, who is the Otun Iyalode of Shomolu and Lagos District, and also the Yeye Akinrogun of Ikeji-Ile Ijesa was twice Mayor of the London Borough of Wandsworth. She talks to AYO-LAWAL GBENOBA on her campaign against human sacrifice and cannibalism in Nigeria. Excerpts:

WHAT is your campaign all about?
The ‘Say No To Cannibalism In Nigeria’ campaign is aimed towards eradicating the ancient and obnoxious practice of mutilating the bodies of traditional rulers after death. The rituals and sacrifices parts of the body of a dead king, especially in Western Nigeria, are used for are barbaric and a disgrace to the country in this 21st century. The movement is out to stop these evil practices which are not in consonant with the will of God and against the fundamental human rights of the affected traditional rulers. When a king dies, they say they have to give his heart to his successor on the throne to eat. They explained that it will make the new king strong and courageous but, is that not deceit? How can eating somebody’s flesh give courage to another person? They mutilate the remains of these kings and engage in fetish and obnoxious activities which add no value to anybody or the society in general.

Why do you need to feed an incoming royal father with the heart of a dead one? This cannibalism started with Christopher Colombus who believed that when a king ate the heart, or some other parts of a dead ruler, some major attributes of the dead was transferred to the new king. This is sheer cannibalism and has no place with God. And, I want the chiefs, the traditional rulers themselves and other stakeholders to know that any tradition that does not recognise God is doomed. The government must put a stop to this cannibalism going on in some parts of Nigeria because, it is even against the constitution of Nigeria. Section 38 subsection 1 of the Nigerian constitution gives every citizen the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion, while section 17 subsection 26 declares that the sanctity of the human person shall be recognised and human dignity shall be maintained and enhanced. Where is the sanctity of the human person in all these? Where is human dignity?

What motivated this campaign?
I was very close to the late Alaye of Ode-Remo, Oba Funso Adeolu, the popular Chief Eleyinmi of the rested Village Headmaster soap opera. Few months after his death on August 21, 2008, he started appearing to me and I had months of traumatic haunting. In his lifetime, Oba Adeolu was a Christian and he made it known that he did not partake in anything fetish during his installation as king. He explicitly, several times, demanded that when death came calling, his corpse should be handed over to his family so that he could be given a proper Christian burial. However, his corpse was not released to the family. After his death, he appeared to me several times, and kept telling me about many things. He said his corpse was handed over to the ‘odis’ (slaves) who treated it like that of a criminal. They took bits and pieces of his remains for their own use while some parts were distributed to the four corners of the town.

It was while going round that I discovered what happened and I met some chiefs who confessed what happened but asked me to forget it because there was nothing we could do about it.

All the ‘odus’ of Ifa do not approve using human beings as sacrifice, the constitution does not approve and to crown it all, God Almighty frowns at this practice, they are doing it to appease whom? Some of the kings today are enlightened and those who are born again Christians, like Oba Adeolu, are renouncing these things. So, why hold on to an obnoxious and barbaric act? Oba Adeolu believed he would be given a decent burial and that is why his ghost has refused to rest. Even in Ijebuland, these things were abolished years ago and Ijebuland under the Awujale agreed they would bury kings according to their religion.

So, how do you hope to stop the practice?
We are canvassing that our traditional rulers should be buried whole, without being mutilated and it should be in the open. There is secrecy because of the evils attached. It is untenable scientifically that the heart is eaten for so and so reasons. To start with, let us have the installation of kings in the open, no aspect of the installation should be shrouded in secrecy. It should be a celebration of our culture so, why should it be shrouded in secrecy? When everything becomes transparent, it will even help younger ones to know more about our culture and we will be able to restore some of our societal values. Why should obas be laid to rest in a paganic manner? If a governor gives staff of office to a king, giving him recognition and authority, that king is under the governor so, why should the government condone barbarism in this age? The ministry of local government and chieftaincy affairs should do something about this, if not, the government is endorsing cannibalism. True that some of the kings went through these rituals during installation but those who opted out should be given that grace of opting out of the rituals in death. They should be buried according to their faith. The practice is a disgrace to the whole of South West because it is common there.

We are appealing to the traditional rulers who were installed through cannibalism to renounce it publicly and declare they don’t want their hearts to be eaten or other parts of their bodies to be used for any form of ritual. Abolition of slave trade took place years ago. So, why do we still have some people in Ode calling themselves slaves (‘odis’)? We need legislation to stop the barbaric act and we are appealing to our lawmakers to rise up to this task of eradicating cannibalism in Nigeria. There should be a law backing a king to opt out of fetish installation and burial and it should become an offence for anyone to tamper with the remains of a king, for whatever purpose, or to give the body to the ‘odi’ for rituals. The penalty should be without an option of fine so that the perpetrators would know how grave the offence is. The ‘odi’ in Ode can be given money to buy goat, ram, cow, or whatever they need for sacrifice, if they must, but there must be total abolition of human sacrifice in the country. Efforts are being made by some Ogun State traditional rulers to stop it but some feel the fetish practice must be protected. The government must detach itself from it.

Internationally, human sacrifice, cannibalism, witchcraft and sorcery are illegal so, why should it be done with impunity in Nigeria, a country that is known as the giant of Africa? Infact, politicians should begin to include the abolition of cannibalism in their campaign programmes, and party manifestos by 2010.

What efforts have you made so far to network and get people involved?
We give glory to Almighty God. I have spoken to so many kings who secretly don’t want it and we are telling them that they should make an open declaration against these evil practices. The campaign would be boosted if they do because people believe they all knew and agreed to these evil practices before being installed. We now call on the royal fathers again, in the name of Almighty God, to declare publicly that they don’t want these fetish practices to continue. I have carried the campaign to the international level so that Nigerians of affluence who are in diaspora would lobby the lawmakers and get a legal backing for the campaign to eradicate human sacrifice and cannibalism in Nigeria. A number of international media like the BBC have aired my interview on the campaign and some Nigerian people abroad are involved in the lobbying for a legislation to stop the obnoxious practices.

We call on the ‘oluwos’ and ‘odis’ in Ode to review the entrenched ill that has no value to the society. We appeal to them to accept cows and goats and allow our royal fathers to be buried according to their beliefs. Then, it was about time that the royal fathers are constituted into the House of Royals, like the House of Lords, so that they would have more power, say and patnership in governance. Yoruba Church Where Skeleton Is Worshiped

The founder’s skeleton

Has the world eventually entered the “last days” as prophesied in the Bible, the holy book for Christians? Maybe, if the activities of some so-called Christians are anything to go by. According to II Timothy 3-7: “In the last days, perilous times shall come.

For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good.”

The holy book further states that in the last days, men would have a form of godliness, but deny the power thereof and men will ever be learning, and will never be able to come to the knowledge of the truth.
The story is hardly believable but it is true that about five years after the death of a pastor, members of his church still worship his skeleton because of their faith in the efficacy of his powers.
To members of the church, late Jacob Adebayo Oladele, who was the founder, Millennium Gospel Church (MGC), remains powerful even in death.

In February 2010, the police stormed the premises of MGC located at an abandoned aerodrome in a vast forest at Egbedore Local Government Area of Osun State, following a tip-off by the monarch of the town, Alayemoore of Ido-Osun, Oba Adedapo Adeniyi Sapoyoro. The monarch, who said the palace had been inundated with series of allegations of high-handedness and weird worship style of the church members, led a team alongside the police to the church where a purported skeleton of the church’s founder was recovered.

The police arrested 15 suspects while people of the town warned the church members never to return to the land, which belongs to the government. Sunday Sun gathered that five of the suspects are still standing trial at an Osogbo Magistrate Court. Members of the church however insist that they are not ritualists and never killed anybody or performed any ritual in the church.

One of those standing trial, Mrs  Florence Oluwaloni Oladele, who is the deputy founder said: “We are not ritualists. We worship our Lord Jesus Christ like every Christian. The skeleton belongs to our founder. Truth shall prevail and we will be vindicated. This is a test of our faith and members should be steadfast and more prayerful.”

Head, Pathology Department at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital (LAUTECHTH), Dr Akinwumi Komolafe, confirmed the presence of the skeleton in the morgue, but said the police did not present a request for tests to be carried out on the skeleton. He said the hospital authorities would keep the skeleton until it receives further directive from the police.

It was however gathered that some of the church members have been visiting the mortuary in order to worship the late founder who they described as their Messiah. “Before stopping them from coming to see the skeleton, some who came were practically worshipping the skeleton. They rolled on the ground, shouting his name, weeping, wailing and appealing to him to answer their prayers. They are fanatical about him and if care is not taken and the skeleton remains in the mortuary more than necessary, they may go wild and take steps to recover it. The mortuary needs more security,” a source at the hospital warned.?

When contacted, the Osun State Commissioner of Police, Solomon Olusegun, said the “case is in court.”
But a police source said: “The skeleton may soon be released to the members since nobody had come forward with a claim that his/her relation was missing.”

“Apart from the skeleton, police did not find any other human or animal part at the church. Initially, we were made to believe that more bodies were going to be recovered from the church like that of the infamous Okija Shrine. None was found apart from the skeleton. However, all theories pointed to the fact that the skeleton belongs to the church founder. You know how fanatical some people could be with living or dead founder of their faith.

“The skeleton will soon be released for burial. At least, the man should be allowed to rest in peace. We still appeal to people who may have contrary information about the church to volunteer it to the police.”
At press time, police authorities were in confusion over what to do with the skeleton even as the hospital management anxiously awaited the collection of late Adebayo’s skeleton for burial because according to them, “the mortuary is meant for dead bodies and not skeleton.

Nigeria: New Evidence Reveals How Ken Saro-Wiwa Was Allegedly Framed

Paul Ohia with agency report

5 December 2010

Compelling evidence published by a UK-based newspaper, The Independent on Sunday, has shed light on how the late playwright and Ogoni activist, Ken Saro-Wiwa, was framed up.

The newspaper accused the military commander of the Internal Security Task Force stationed in the Niger Delta region, Lieutenant-Colonel Paul Okuntimo, of ordering the killings of four Ogoni elders whose deaths led to the trial and hanging of Ken Saro-Wiwa, with eight others in 1995.

Okuntimo was also said to have taken bribes from Shell to carry out the killings.

The newspaper said it gained exclusive access to witness accounts that were to be used in evidence in the case of Wiwa vs Shell, brought by Saro-Wiwa's family.

The case was settled last May for $15.5 million, just days before it was due to start in New York. The settlement meant the testimonies were never made public.

In the testimony, one of the witnesses, Boniface Ejiogu, who was an orderly to Okuntimo, offered compelling evidence as to who might have murdered the four Ogoni elders at a meeting on May 21, 1994.

According to him, Saro-Wiwa was due to speak at the meeting between Okuntimo and the four elders but was turned away by the military.

Then Ejiogu said he heard Okuntimo tell his task force commander to "waste them, in the army you waste them is when you are shooting rapidly".

Within 24 hours, Saro-Wiwa was arrested and charged with the murders by late head of state, General Sani Abacha, and later hanged.

It was implied that he had had the elders killed because of their moderate stance on Ogoni issues. Despite an international outcry, he was hanged in November 1995, following a trial described by the then British Prime Minister, John Major, as "judicial murder".

The new evidence also reveals that Okuntimo, whose troops were implicated in murder and violation, was in the pay roll of Shell at the time of the killings and was driven around in a Shell vehicle.

Since the time of Saro-Wiwa's death, Shell has insisted that it had no financial relationship with the Nigerian military, although it has admitted paying it "field allowances" on two occasions. It has consistently denied any widespread collusion and payments.

The new evidence provides fresh insight into Shell's alleged financial and logistical involvement with the Nigerian military and with Okuntimo.

Ejiogu also testified to standing guard as victims were violated and tortured while Lt-Col Okuntimo was in command.

Asked if he ever saw his commander receive money from Shell, he said he witnessed it on two occasions.Ejiogu described in detail how, just days before the Ogoni elders were murdered, he drove with Okuntimo to Shell's base in Port Harcourt, where the officer received seven large bags of money.

"I was there when other soldiers were carrying the Ghana Must Go bags," he testified. The bags were so heavy the soldiers had difficulty carrying them, and one fell open. "The thing opened," Ejiogu said. "I saw it was money in bundles. He said, wow, this is money. I say, yes man, it is money."

On another occasion, Ejiogu said he witnessed four bags being given by a Shell security official to Okuntimo at the official's house late at night.

Another witness, Raphael Kponee, also due to testify, was a policeman working for Shell. On a different occasion, he said he saw three bags being loaded into Okuntimo's pick-up truck by his driver and another driver in front of the security building at the Shell base. Shell officials have admitted that money was paid to the officer, but purely as field allowances for his men, who were protecting Shell's property in Ogoniland.

Abacha was head of state that sanctioned Wiwa's death.
Paul Okuntimo a Yoruba was the actual killer who convicted him.
His conviction may be right if he actually was involved in the death of the Ogoni ''vultures'' or wrong if it was trumped up charges.

No need to revise history, its well documented that its the SE that allies with the North to form the oppresor while everyone in Nigeria knows the SW are always in the opposition

Example

In 1960 Balewa took Azikwe as his Boy boy while SW was in the opposition

In 1979 Shagari took Ekwueme as his boyboy while SW was in the opposition

In 1993 Tofa took Sylvester Ugo as his boyboy while the SW was with the SDP of MKO Abiola

So we know the side that has been in alliance with the North ever since.

When SaroWiwa was hanged by Abacha, It was Ojukwu who supported it and went to mock SaroWiwa

This is for those who always like to hinge the development of a country to access to sea. While access to sea is okay, it does not automatically translate to improved economy or well being of citizens. Here is an inexhaustive list of third world and developed landlocked countries doing better than Nigeria. In addition to better economy, these countries have peace, stable government, better physical infrastructure, and overall better HDIs than Nigeria. Only the countries in bold are developed (so to speak).

Botswana (Africa)
Bolivia
Paraguay
Switzerland
Austria
Czech Republic
Ukraine
Belarius
Luxembourg
Leichenstein
Swaziland (Africa)
Lesotho (Africa)
Bhutan
Uzbekistan
Mongolia
And many more

Nepal is almost similar to Nigeria in terms of GDP per capita. I am sure you will find Nigerians there who left their country due to hardship, but how many Nepalese would you find in Nigeria?

Countries with sea access doing poorly

Nigeria
Congo
Somali
Sierral Leone
Afghanistan
etc etc (to numerous to count)

All landlocked countries have played smart diplomacy to keep them going in terms of trade and shipments and cargo transportation.
With respect to Nigeria, if we separate, the entire North will be landlocked. But I see no reason why they cannot employ diplomacy to bring in their cargoes via the eastern or western flank of southern Nigeria. We will not be enemies after separation. Also, keep in mind that everyone wants money and peaceful neighbours they can do business with. As for the Igbos, they can only be considered landlocked if Igbos in the SS do not elect to be in the same country with the IGBOs in the SE. But that is highly unlikely because they also do not want to be slaves under other neighbouring non-Igbo groups. If anything (that is, if SE Has to stand alone as an Igbo country), the space between Abia and Rivers is less than 1 KM in many places. So also Rivers and Anambra and Delta. As such a lot of unregulated passage of goods and persons will be taking place, almost negating the effect of no access to sea. The SS needs SE (Igbo large market= population). The first thing an Igbo country should do is to develop a sound rail system for goods and to dredge Imo River which empties into Opobo (an Igbo coastal community in Rivers State)

Third term bid divides YCE

A storm seems to have taken over the Yoruba Council ofElders (YCE), which is divided on the support for the alleged third term bid byPresident Olusegun Obasanjo.

By Segun Fatuase,
Tunde Abatan (Lagos)
and Chuks Ehirim (Abuja)

A faction led by Dejo Raimi is out to support the plan, particularly the extension of the President’s tenure by two years, butthe main body – comprising the Working Committee – is opposed toit.

Earlier in the week, Raimi, incumbent Chancellor of theLadoke Akintola University Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso reportedly said theYCE has agreed to support Obasanjo if he chooses to elongate his term.

Raimi was apparently reacting to the position of Afenifere, which is opposed to the bid.

He stressed that the YCE would back an extension of thePresident’s tenure by two years to allow him to complete the reform inthe economy.

“A Yoruba man is doing a good job of reformingNigeria. If he demands more years, he is our man, we prefer him. If he requiresextension, we support him”, he stated.

“If we are to amend the Constitution to grant him twomore years, why not? The international community doesn’t trust anybodyexcept him. It expects him to complete the reform and enthrone transparency anddue process in Nigeria”.

However, YCE President, Adeyinka Adebayo, scoffed at thereport and described Raimi’s statement as “a greatembarrassment” which has put the Yoruba in a confused and awkward statebecause it contradicts Afenifere’s take.

Adebayo said he has received numerous calls to clarify theYCE’s position, but that “the Yoruba Elders Working Committee orthe entire Council of Elders have never discussed anything of this nature, letalone take a decision on this sensitive issue.

“It is a great embarrassment to me as the President ofthe Yoruba Council of Elders. This is a serious issue which should not beplayed with as it affects the entire country”.

He stressed that the YCE would prefer to be seen as“elders of the entire nation” rather than political leaders.

Adebayo recalled that Raimi had not shown any “devianttendencies” to the YCE agenda before the recent development and expressedthe hope that things would be sorted out at a meeting scheduled for nextTuesday.

YCE National Vice President, Tunji Otegbeye, also insistedthat the group has not discussed the idea and that Obasanjo did not broach itat any meeting with the YCE.

In his view, those advocating a third term are doing so tostoke the President’s interest for their own gain.

He said the meeting on Tuesday would take a final decisionon the issue.

But Afenifere National Publicity Secretary, Yinka Odumakin, said the groupis not surprised by the division in the YCE since most of its leaders“supported Sani Abacha till he died in office.

“Prominent members of the group backed Abacha and thereckless statement of Dejo Raimi did not come to us as a surprise. They mayeven choose to swim and sink with Obasanjo, it does not matter to us”.

Odumakin alleged that “it is common knowledge”that the YCE was founded because of Obasanjo and that the role being played byit is no surprise, even as “the Yoruba are not a people who like to forcethemselves on others but rather respect justice, fairplay, equity and the ruleof law. It is not in the interest and character of the Yoruba to do that; weare not in support of Obasanjo’s third term bid because our son isinvolved.

“Afenifere takes exception to Raimi’s utterances. He should notabuse Afenifere becausehe has no sense of history”.

Also on Tuesday, leaders from the South East and Middle Beltmet in Abuja to fashion out plans on how to corner political power in 2007.

The Conveners were Chukwufu Oputa and Theophilus YakubuDanjuma.

There were also Governors Joshua Dariye (Plateau), ChrisNgige (Anambra) and Sam Egwu (Ebonyi) as well as Chekwas Okorie, ChukwuemekaEzeife, Jim Nwobodo, Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, Salihu Ibrahim, Jerry Gana, ElizabethPam.

Others present included Kema Chikwe, Josephine Anenih, JoeNwodo, Anyim Pius Anyim, Isaac Shaahu, Rochas Okorocha, Jona Jang, S. Wampanaand Joe Irukwu.

The focus was how to raise “credible and incorruptiblepersons with sound leadership credentials” for elective offices, especially the top jobs.

Speaker after speaker dwelt on this theme. Danjuma began itall by saying: “Let me draw the distinguished attention of this dialoguesession to the fundamental issue of leadership succession come 2007. Delegatesfrom the Middle Belt will be more than delighted to have a frank discussion onthis matter during the interactive session”.

He spoke of the support of the zone for the creation of anadditional state in the South East to bring it at par with other regions.

And he touched on the urgent desire by Nigerians toconsolidate democracy and ensure “free and fair elections throughoutNigeria and the sanctity of constitutional provisions on tenure of office forelected officials”.

Danjuma added that there is need to find urgent solutions tothe demands for power rotation through peaceful and democratic mechanisms.

The communiqué issued after the meeting, read by A.B.C. Nwosu, said the two groupsresolved “to identify and pursue areas of common political interests andin that connection, cooperate maximally in ensuring that come the 2007 generalelections, credible and incorruptible persons with sound leadership credentialsare elected to occupy high political offices in Nigeria, especially the officesof the President, vice president, governors, members of the National Assembly, etc”.
