tuniski:

The value of the naira by purchasing power parity is determine by a simple Concept thus; if the cost ccommoditiy A in USA is 3$ and same commodity A in nigeria cost 1000naira, the naira to dollar value is 1$/333naira. QED

Any official control/pegging only ensure poor economic performance and rent seeking. The premium of the naira via control is what is driving inflation.

It is not poor economy if 400naira goes for 1$, no it is not! What is wrong is creating incentives for black-market via subsidy on Forex thereby impeding economic activities.

By this false valuation of naira, we officially are losing about 35% in naira what it should be. If we earn 1bn$ and value it at 197bn naira instead of 320bn, the 123bn subsidy is reflected in cost to manufacturers, inflation to consumers and rent to round trippers. It helps only the round trippers who gain only currency transaction value without economic value backing!

Buhari simply doesn't get! Let himm continue to romance the Yuan thinking two peggers of their currency (China n nigeria) live in isolation of global economy.

Bottom line, the naira is already devalued with the sustained depreciation and the continue insistence by buhari not to yield to reality has created reality in job losses, inflation and overall recession. A govt that mouths diversification on one breath and stifle it On the other promoting dumping and importation!

May God help us.
God bless. Will they ever learn?. No!. They are zombies led an iliterate president and clueless finance minister.

You don't get it. We don't have the dollars to go around. Even if you devalue, we still won't have enough and you know want happens when plenty money chases fewer goods.
This is a typical example of penny wise, pounds foolish!. You said their won't be enough dollars to go round, but at the same time closing our doors against other sources of forex. How you ask?. May i remind that, crude oil though our chief source forex, but not the ONLY source. If you are looking to strengthen our sources of forex, you don't scare away investors and FDIs,which are other sources of earning forex, with useless economic policy of pegging dollar against naira!. Many foreign investors are already gone, and its attendant job loss. This will create more pressure on the economy.

1) Devaluing would not pushed black market rate up but normalize it. It means instead of majority of us buying it at speculators' price we will be buying at official rate or something closer.

2) By fixing naira at 197 -199, we are losing money because the major means from which we generate foreign reserves is not fixed and has fell more than 70% so far, but we refused to make realistic adjustment to contain such changes. Saudi Arabia is enjoying the Riyal fixed because her foreign reserves is huge, $744,440,558,276 and can cover over $200 billion deficit created by the current oil glut.

3) Not for their own interest but a more conducive working environment.

Note: I am not favouring devaluation at this stage because of current oil price appreciation, but forex policy need to be adjusted to accommodate these foreign companies, if not we will lose jobs and unemployment rate will surge with scaring inflation rate. Our Foreign Direct Investment that is nosediving, will plunge even more, so what is the essence of a policy that can create jobs, yet losing the ones already created.

God bless you.

Fulani herdsmen have reportedly kidnapped a police man after engaging a joint team of the Nigerian Army and Mobile Police Force personnel in Agatu, Benue state in a gun duel.
One of the policemen, Corporal Ebiakpo Akparakazi, was also reported missing during the attack.
The Benue state police spokesman, ASP Moses Yamu, who confirmed the incident, said that search teams have been sent out to find the missing officer.
Another youth, Inalegwu Chele, was also reported missing during the attack.
It was gathered that the herdsmen opened fire on the security team who were on their way to investigate an alleged killing of two youths, after receiving a distress call.
Reports also say the two youths who were allegedly shot by the herdsmen were rescued, and are now receiving treatment.

Can you imagine what the person answered(establishing plants near consumers). Is it not madness?. Do consumers need plants or electricity(light)?.why not concentrate plants near sources of fuel, and evacuate power to end users via electric poles/cables,which will minimixe gas sabortage?. Why not solve these power wahala usimg situations peculiar to each region.say gas&coal for SE/SS,solar&wind foq North?.But hell NO,our usual "Oyel" brothers from the Waste and North will rather die than agree to that.More reason why true federalism or outright dissolution is the answer.we can't continue to allow mad people drag us backward. Politics / Re: They Want To Abduct Nnamdi Kanu In Court - DSS by NDPVF(m): 3:17pm On Mar 07, 2016
mile12crises:
ABUJA – The Department of State Service, DSS, on Monday, told a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, that it has uncovered plot by some pro-Biafra agitators, to invade the court and forcefully free the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mr. Nnamdi Kanu.

The security agency made the allegation on a day the federal government was to open its case against Kanu who is facing a six-count treason charge alongside two other pro-Biafra supporters, Benjamin Madubugwu and David Nwawuisi.

Nnamdi kanu The Director of Public Prosecution, DPP, Mr. Mohammed Diri, told trial Justice John Tsoho that the DSS has already commenced investigation on the planned invasion. Meantime, following the inability of the federal government to produce any of the eight witnesses scheduled to testify before the court, the defendants, through their lawyer, Chief Chuks Muoma, SAN, applied to be discharged and acquitted of the charge against them.

They predicated their application on the provision of section 351(1) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015. Earlier, the DPP informed the court that the witnesses said they would not appear to testify against the defendants unless the are allowed to wear masks or their identities shielded from both lawyers and people observing the proceeding. ‘My lord this is because they are already receiving threats from associates of the defendants that they will be dealt with. The witnesses said they love their lives and requested that their identities be shielded from people who are coming to witness the proceeding’, Diri added.

He said DSS operatives also billed to testify in the matter, made similar request on the basis that they are investigating terrorism cases and would not want their identities exposed. Justice Tsoho had on February 19, refused an application by the federal government which sought leave to mask the witnesses.
The application was vehemently opposed by counsel to the defendants who urged the court not to allow ‘masquerades’ to testify before it. Meanwhile, the parties are still exchanging arguments on the application for the charge to be quashed and the defendants discharged and acquitted.

‎Kanu who was hitherto the Director of Radio Biafra and Television, ‎has been in detention since October 14, 2015, when he was arrested by security operatives upon his arrival to Nigeria from his base in the United Kingdom. The defendants were alleged to have committed treasonable felony, an offence punishable under Section 41(C) of the Criminal Code Act, CAP C38 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria. FG alleged that they were the ones managing the affairs of the IPOB which it described as ‘an unlawful society’.

Specifically, Kanu was alleged to have illegally smuggled radio transmitters into Nigeria, which he used to disseminate “hate broadcasts”, encouraging the “secession of the Republic ofBiafra”, from Nigeria. The accused persons however pleaded not guilty to the charge on January 20, even as the court ordered their remand at Kuje prison ‎in Abuja.‎‎

both DSS and Buhari are mad!. How are the alleged witnesses being threatened already, when their identities ase yet to be unmasked to the public?. The judge should that Mohammad Diri is not being truthful, and should in the spirit of justice, quash the case. If the alleged witnesses are being threatened, they are simply being threatened by the ghosts of the over 3million Biafra pregnant women and children killed by Gowon,Awolowo and Buhari. No one is threatening them except their conscience.

americanigga:
For sometime now I have been living in great fear- That this country Nigeria may experience war one more time and that is very soon.

My fear is often times intensified anytime I visit nairaland and see the diatribes that has encapsulated every conversation between the Igbos and the yorubas.
All you see is great hatred between the two tribes. While the Igbos and Yorubas are bussy insulting and betraying one another, the Hausas are mobilising and soaring very high politically.

After critical study of the situation I realised that the Hausas are not that educated, they are disadvantageous in terms of knowledge but they have WISDOM, while the southerners are very rich with knowledge because of western education but they lack sufficient wisdom.

Look at the Igbos for example, calling for the state of Biafra at a time they should be thinking of how to form political alliance with the Yorubas to take over power. The question is do they (Igbos) have the political and financial wherewithal to fight for an  independent nation. What has changed in the East from 1967 - 1970 when they tried to break up from Nigeria till date. Do they have the financial autonomy? Do they have backup for food supply? Do they have sufficient weapon? Do they have sincere backup from the Western nation or UN? These are some of the things they must consider first.

Other things they should consider is the lives of their people and their investment allover the country especially in Lagos. Like the place I used to live in Okeafa in Isolo Lagos, virtually all the gigantic buildings are owned by Igbo business men. All these will be a big lost if they decide to go to war.

One other thing I noticed is that when the Hausas or Muslims people are agitated they attack and kill non Hausas or non Muslims, to be more precise they kill Sotherners,( examples: most of the havoc in the North by bokoharam, recent disput in mile 12, even the fallout of the 2011 elections when Buhari lost to Jonathan). But when Southerners are agitated they attack and kill fellow southerners. To buttress this I tell you a short storry about the war, that my father told me.

My dad told me that during the war 1967 -1970, he was living in a federal government institution in the south south area of Nigerian. The institution was  made up of people of various tribes, ranging from The Calabars, The Urobos The Ijaws, The Itsekiris, The Igbos, The Benins, Yorubas, and some few Hausas. Just before the war some Igbos out of fear flew to the East, their homeland, but some out of ignorance stayed behind, thinking because they all knew each other in the community nothing would happen to them. When the war started, a deadly, blood thirsty, killing squad emanated, comprising of: the Calabas, The Urhobos, Benins, Yorubas, the IJaws, Itsekiris, and other tribes I can't mention all of them. They started going from one Igbo man's house to the other to check if they were still around. Those Igbos that stayed behind with their families were slaughtered, beheaded,  others were burnt alive, buried alive, their property looted. Some Igbos started running into the forest with their families. Some of them stayed in the forest throughout the war. Many died of Hunger, some were eaten by deadly animals, some had to kill their children for meal.
All these just because of one man, Odumegwu Ojukwu. Ojukwu was not a bad man, he only miscalculated just the way Nnamdi Kanu has miscalculated.

Ojukwu allowed sentiment and anger to overhaul his sense of reasoning. He did not consider the life of his people. When he saw the reality on ground he took off abandoning his people. But it was too late, 2million Igbos had already lost their lives. Nobody was arrested for war crime. If the Igbos decide to fight for an independent nation, history will only repeat itself.

I watched a news of recent where the Americans donated various weapons to the Nigerian Government inspite of accusations of war crime against the Nigerian military in the North East, this is thesame American the Igbos are relying on. The Western countries are after their interest they will only support you if they have something to benefit. The federal government off recent displayed various weapons: Bomb detectors,  Armored cars, war jets.

I want to use this opportunity to plead with the biafra hopeful, Igbos or IPADS to forget about biafra, forget Nnamdi Kanu and form strategic, political alliance with the Yorubas or even the Northerners, just the way Azikiwe used to do it. They should think about how to start participating in mainstream politics, not isolating themselves, just because of an individual that has lost the election. Those who have ears let them hear.

*Unit Commander to journalist: You’re an idiot, madman

By Perez Brisibe

EKU— REMINISCENT of the military era, about 10 soldiers flogged and used boots on hundreds of women protesting at Ovre-Eku (Iwevbo) community yesterday, over a land which had been in dispute for years between Edo and Delta states. The women, numbering over 500, wearing black clothing, had converged at Eku community from where they marched to the disputed land carrying a coffin covered in palm fronds to express their displeasure over alleged sale of the land to an oil company.

Getting to the spot at about 10:45a.m., they were accosted by the soldiers, who ordered the women to leave the site. The women insisted on being addressed by a representative of the company. Angered by the stand of the women, a senior military officer identified to be the Unit Commander at the site, Lt. E. D. Oworobo, cocked his riffle, threatened to shoot and then ordered his men to flog the women. Two journalists, including a Vanguard correspondent, who had accompanied the protesting women, suffered the same fate.

The soldiers chased the fleeing women into adjoining bushes at the site. The aged among the women, some in their 80s, who could not run, were trampled on by the soldiers and others flogged with tree stems.

Unit Commander’s reaction

When the Unit Commander, Lt. E. Oworobo, was contacted by this reporter to comment on the way and manner the women were treated, he described the reporter as an “idiot and a madman.”

Meanwhile, the soldiers again went berserk at about 11:30a.m., invaded parts of Ovre-Eku community, destroyed nine motorcycles and 13 bicycles, while residents of the community fled, following the arrival of the soldiers in a white Toyota Hilux

Education / Re: FG Signs Mou With NASCO Foods On National School Feeding Programme by NDPVF(m): 12:46pm On Feb 08, 2016

Adesiji77:
The federal government, at the weekend, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with NASCO Food limited, Jos, Plateau State, for commercial production of high nutrient density biscuits to feed about 30 million school children below the age of 13.
The Minister of Science and Technology, Mr. Ogbonnaya Onu, who spoke at the signing ceremony in Abuja, said the MoU was necessary in order to advance the implementation process of government desire to enhance a healthy development of  children through the programme.

While the project will address the lack of vital vitamins in children’s food, the minister said it was also conceived out of the need to tackle the increasing food challenges facing children in primary school between the ages of five and 13 years.
“This is surely the best way to go as the nation is giving serious attention to utilisation of indigenous technologies as a potent strategy to diversify the economy to provide alternative revenue sources.
“In this process, jobs will be created, wealth will be generated and the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), will be enhanced through the productive sector of the economy,” he said.

According to him, the high nutrient density biscuits were one of the products of Federal Institute of Industrial Research Oshodi (FIIRO), Lagos, which would meet at least one- third recommended dietary allowance of Pupils.
In a remark, the General Manager of NASCO Foods, Mr. Ibrahim Sani, thanked the ministry for counting the company worthy to partner with it in the commercial production of the biscuits.
Sani, said NASCO Foods limited is an indigenous company that has contributed immensely to the economic development of Nigeria in its 50 years of existence.

The wholly indigenous company, according to him, has capacity and experience to produce biscuit products to feed estimated 25 million children in public primary schools across the country.
Also in a brief remark, the Director General,, FIIRO, Mrs Gloria Elemo, said the mandate of the institute was to carry out research and development into food and agro-allied processing technologies.

She said: “The signing of MoU signifies the technical commencement of strategic partnership with NASCO Foods to fully commercialise the biscuits production technology.
“The biscuit is developed from indigenous crops which reflect the nation’s best in terms of foods security, safety and standard which will be commercially produced with this arrangement.”
