pazienza: No, it's not bad. And majority of the people from the town like the New name.
Communities in different parts of Igboland had changed names. For example, the original name of Awka-Etiti was Awka-Nkakwu( lol) , Abatete was Orokwu( or something like that, I am nolonger sure) Enugwu- Agidi was renamed to Enugu-Agidi from a name I can't remember now.
But in case of Nkerehi, the way the pro Madukaji group who were pushing for the Umuchukwu name change were trying to paint those traditionists in the town that insisted on the old name Nkerehi, as diabolical people who didn't want the progress of the town, left a sour taste in the mouth. Oh k! Lol @Awka Nkakwu |

pazienza: So Godwin madukaji story finally reaches NL. Hmm, odikwa fine.
Well, the man is a good man that have done great things for his town.
The idea of changing the town's name from "Nkerehi" to "Umuchukwu" and then burning down of various shrines in the town on account of inferiority complex induced belief that those gods are evil and that the name "Nkerehi" is outdated and not fitting for the town, didn't sit well with some traditionists in the town, and rightly so too. To make matters worst, pro madukaji groups were busy burning down the shrines claiming that the gods were the cause of the backwardness of the town, While madukaji was busy building new big shrine( Church) for the Christians.
Madukaji had money and because of the good things he had done for majority of the people of the town, including the Igwe of the town, got the popularity vote and people's support on the town name changing ish as a show of gratitude from the people to him. But those in Nkerehi who already were self made and that didn't need Madukaji's help insisted that the town name remain "Nkerehi".
This was the same scenario that played out in most Igbo societies in time past, as represented in Things fall apart.
As always, the traditionists lost out, and the Christians had their way, and the town most of us had known as Nkerehi since the dawn of time, became renamed "Umuchukwu", to reflect the shift of the town from traditional Igbo belief system to the Christian belief system. BUt the name 'Umuchukwu' is not bad |

nwanlecha: Pls, stop touting the slogan of your enemies. The only people who have been violent so far are the nigerian police and army. They've been killing innocent Biafrans peacefully protesting for their freedom, and i never saw you or the so-called peaceful nigerians, condemn that. Back to the topic, the dispute has rightly been b/w the Igbo nation and the Hausa/Fulani nation, 'cus we have completely different ideologies. Now, the Yorubas who should have stayed out of this have surprisingly, been the ones at the fore-front of the war against the Igbo nation. The Yorubas & Hausa/Fulani, are actually strange bedfellows, but the Yorubas, will gladly align with the Hausa/Fulani, as long as it has anything to do with subjugating Ndi Igbo, and halting our progress. The yorubas have this innate fear in them that on a level playing ground, Ndi Igbo will always have the upper hand, so they do not mind mortgaging their future by aligning with the north, as long as it affords them the opportunity to stifle any competition from Ndi Igbo. All I have to say to the Yoruba nation is this: since you've chosen to chase after Ndi Igbo, instead of charting your own course, you will forever keep chasing after us, but the bad news is that you will never catch up with us. That is the cross you'll have to bear, for being filled with untold jealousy and envy against the great Igbo nation. Iseeeee!!! |
