myforumid3: Its ok folks. Lets not fight over trivial stuffs. We are all "right". When I made my post, I said "no quarrel meant", so why the fight? Lets continue to give advice on VISA enquiries and encourage more serious focused and hard-working Nigerians with passion to change Nigeria some there to come over to the States. I'm yet to come to terms with the fact that I am the only African in my program and probably just the whole College of Engineering (just 12 graduate students admitted into my graduate program) and 1 of just 3 Africans at the Intl Students Orientation (it was Asians and Indians by my right and left and all over the place); that goes to show the disparity in development between Nigeria and other Asian countries. Check out happyschoolblog dot com and see how Indians are encouraging themselves;
If you consider the job market and economic situation plus the bills and constant tax you'd ve to pay here, then life could be termed "tough and horrible"; Its not completely a "Bed of Rose". My friend told me not "to always try to calculate the naira value of everything I buy here cos I would end up not buying anything at all", so financially, its pretty tough but not for people whose finances are consistently been pumped from back home or have some legal money-generating ventures they are involved in. You'd be very frustrated if you come here to hustle, so its vital to be financially buoyant and prudent but pls and pls dont use the word "battle" cos it makes it sound like there is something else to it, something quite disheartening if not completely discouraging.
My advice for anyone coming here on a low budget (poor folks), try hitting a very high score on your GRE/GMAT/SAT to increase your chances for funding (instate fees/scholarship/TA/RA) or betterstill, apply to schools in State like Texas that offer in-state tuition fees to intl students which gives you the eligibility to pay all fees like an american, and the remaining semesters' fees could be waived if you perform absolutely well (like = > 3.6/4.0 in your first semester). I cant believe the very low school fee plus health insurance that was taken from me cos of instate tuition scholarship, yet my profs are already offering me RA/TA positions which could take off my living expenses and bills. Dont know about what you guys are going through in OBAMALAND but I'm enjoying life here (not the many pleasurable distractions which could easily derail a serious student)
My friend in PennState U doing same program as me is complaining of how he would pay his over $25k school fees (no living expenses) when my school took just a little over 1/5th of that amount and guess what, my school is in oil industry capital state (Texas) and ranks 7th in US News Petroleum engineering school ranking; so newbies, be very careful on your choice of school.
abeg once again, make we nor quarrel oh. na VISA advice na femilangy create this thread for. u r 1 out of 100 9ja's with such experience.however u wil understand better when u get to malachi chapter of OBAMALAND,na genesis u dey now so relax . na to make am be our goal and at d same time advice intending folks to either be financially prepared or emotionally prepared to face watever they come across. We all need God i knw,but God no go pour $$$ dollars from heaven for lazy folks. |

mysterysng: @imperious, ALL sevis nos start with N, credit card especially if the address is Nigeria is not acceptable. If the person paying is in the US, he can pay by credit card, mail a check or pay via Western Union, they get it within 1 week. Credit card payment is not dependent on the alphabet. Again, ALL sevis nos start with N
@Others, can't we just stop this argument of Yankee is/is not tough. Don't you know what you are going in for? Before you go to the US, you should have an idea about what accommodation fees are. Which range between as low as 300 to as high as 1500 dollars/ room depending on where you stay and what amenities are provided. That is way more than what you will pay per room in most parts of Nigeria. If one person says US is tough does that stop you from pursing your dream? Don't they all say US is tough? have they died? You should know or have heard there is no "my relative" abroad. If you are staying with a relative, they might expect you to share bills et al, when you leave for the US, go prepared. Be ready to spend a whole lot in the first few months especially as you will not yet know about getting the best deals. After a while, though things might not necessarily get easier. but you will get tougher. If you are on an F1 Visa, you shouldn't expect to enter yanky and then it all becomes a bed of roses. Yeah you might get cheaper food, better amenities et al but there is still hardship. Face that reality and lets stop going back and forth about people discouraging others from going to the US.
this is wat i am trying to tell these guys but they feel we r discouraging them. now u hv said d same thing. thx |

dizyfrenzy: to be honest, its not like life is hell here. but if you are coming here with the intention of coming to hustle so you can pay your school fees and live your life, its gonna be a little tough, but Nigerians are very resourceful people and a lot of people make it here even without having rich parents to throw down millions of naira to sponsor them through school. its not as easy as people think it is but with God on your side, hardwork, focus and financial prudence, you will make it in America whether your parents have money or not, am just gradually trying to settle into the life in Fairfax Thank God for everything which side of MD u dey? |

myforumid3: @nethacker, abeg tell the House the battle! as if nor be sweat battle, atleast compared to the 7yrs (5yrs engr+2yrs nysc) we suffered studying CRAP in 9ja. Abeg nor dey use match-stick fire scare people wey don see hell-fire before, yet excelled distinctively. lol I hate it when u guys in obamaland try to subtlety discourage people aspiring to come to OBAMALAND- A LAND OF OPPORTUNITY INDEED IF YOU ARE FOCUSED AND HAVE YOUR FINANCES STRAIGHTENED OUT. Abeg oh, No querrel meant! If you started dis forum with me and femilangy(the creator of this thread), u will definitely hv come across my posts in the 100th+ pages. so u saying that we here try to discourage u from coming is untrue. I'm trying to prepare ur mind for d next hussle, If you think u hv seen hell in 9ja, u will understand wen u get here. What i'll try to point out here is dat dnt trash any advice by any1 who hv gotten their visas thru this forum and r here in US.We try as much as possible nt to insult any forum member come wat may. the likes of oyewolejos,djunit,khunleah,fagbon,femilangy,gongo aso,kenzema,nairaspace,ojaP and many more that landed here between 2009-2010, were prepared and saw the reality but were prepared. This slave talk is annoying sometimes. I think our people back home are carrying this slavery Syndrome in their minds and souls for too long without proper understanding of diaspora Nigerians. The slaves in Nigeria is enough for the country. If any nation is enslaving its citizenry there is none as worse as in the Nigeria's case. A country where the govt. don't provide basic amenities, loot public funds, poor security of lives and properties, dirty environment, bad education, human rights abuses,etc. What more to those that enslavement!?
Helping out with power issue has become enslavement. If the nation could find a solution why all this while the govt. haven't been able to come up with appropriate solution? Even in many African countries electricity problem is almost a thing of the past excepting for Nigeria. pls tell them oo, those ones claiming local champions cos of peanuts they get from govt coffers |

kalokalo: Nigerians can be hypocrites! The same masses that will virulently condemn private university education because they charge a few hundred thousand naira per annum will be the first to give their blood and treasure to foreign varsities where the annual fees are in multiple millions of naira. Where is the sense, logic and consistency?
You will see folks that will riot over a 10 thousand tuition in federal varsities in naija yet will be the same folks that will work for a few years, save up and spend millions on foreign masters degrees. Why? You will give your blood for education in a foreign land and yet cant give peanuts in your own land? Why not condemn foreign universities for charging so much like you condemn private varsities in Naija who charge peanuts in comparision?
They want world class education but don't want to pay for it (at least in Naija). They are jokers! in d real sense of it , u r ryt, i totally agree with u. d dilapidated state of our education sector is d reason y employers frown at any degree obtained in 9ja. we pay nothing but want quality. Here in US,even d federal colleges n universities r not cheap at all.this ,i think is because of regulations in place dat supports funding from government. US govt fund their universities thereby giving opportunities to those whose parent earn little n cant afford d college expenses. Back to 9ja context, how do u expect pple to pay dat tuition being charged by private universities when three fifth of the whole population are living below standard while some good-4-nothing and money-gulping scoundrels sit up there and embezzle d funds meant for education?d minimum wage stands at N18,000 on d national average i think, how d hell do u want an ordinary civil servant to send 3 children to school with just N18,000 ? . it would hv been a relief if we hv some sort of financial aid /loan frm d govt for students in our tertiary institution. i've seen a lot of peeps here in DC that r sons & daughters of 9ja politicians,howard university is their home. my brother d matter na very complex matter oo, make we jst dey thank God for our own sha. kennyisaac: hey peeps i would like to peep in your conversations as am also rite nw a victim of this circumstances, i fink it depends on your frame of mind and your determination plus focus, i won d american visa lottery last year and am likewise studying law in d obafemi awolowo university, but funny enough, dint fink it twice before i knew i had to shenk ife for america, for the visa interview i had to miss d examination, am stl novice to my plight in the usa, but i know its an opportunity, to be choosen amongst millions of people, in lagos i also got admissions before i went to ife, but i declined cos i dint like the course, i got english from KSU and history and international relations from UNILORIN as a D.E student, but i intentionally did not go, not until i got ife afer years of hard work, so i have a mindset and i'l go for it, SO THE GIRL IN SUBJECT SHULD ASK HERSLF THIS QUESTION, AM I SET FOR D HURDLE, i'll be leaving very very soon cos i alredy got a d8, and i pray my days be well in JESUS NAME congrats brother.welcome aboard |

make she collect her greencard and move to US, if she stays in 9ja,no form of FAFSA will b available for her.Let's think about it this way,wat if her aunty dies and d babe nvr had d chance to get her greencard per her aunt's instruction?dats a loose/loose situation, if she gets d greencard,she will be eligible for grants n other forms of sponsorship frm the government,at worst,a loan, but 9ja no get any of these so y stay there?afterall employers no go fancy her bachelors anyway. |
