Celebrities / Nollywood, Diversification Of The Economy And The Broadband Question. by newsagency: 1:58pm On Feb 11, 2019
Nollywood, Diversification of the Economy and The Broadband Question - By Don Pedro Aganbi.

The world has changed. Few can argue with this assertion. A chief driver of this change is the internet, the widespread and growing availability of broadband internet service. Today high-speed broadband has opened up a world of possibilities in every facet of human existence, from government to business and especially entertainment. Almost taken for granted is the ability to now stream TV and films and to download songs, books and thrilling podcasts. Broadband is enabling or else strengthening the digitalisation of entertainment. Beyond the consumption of digital entertainment are the production, distribution and commercialisation. Nigeria, as any other country that seeks to diversify its revenue stream, must now begin to urgently consider how to harness the potential in entertainment via the availability broadband service.

The Nollywood Economic Outlook 2019 which held in Lagos last week provided a unique platform for this exercise of collaborative brainstorming and cross fertilization of ideas. Orgnaised by the Nollywood Mandate Group (NMG), it had in attendance icons from the information Technology, Entertainment space and Nollywood. It was Chaired by Dr. Chris Uwaje, former President of the Institute of Software Practitioners of Nigeria (ISPON) and Oracle of the IT industry, Chief Zeb Ejiro, OON Pioneer Nollywood Producer and the Sheik the Nigerian Movie industry, Chief Rachael Oniga, Veteran Actress, Tony Akposheri, Veteran Actor, Sunny Mcdon, Secretary, Board of Trustees of Actors Guild of Nigeria, Fred Idehen, Veteran Actor and Airtel Ambassador, Felix Duke, music icon and PMAN Official, Don Pedro Aganbi, Chairman, Actors Guild of Nigeria – Lagos Chapter and National Coordinator, Nollywood Mandate Group, Mazi Dr. Sam Uche Anyamele, Actor and Lagos State Governorship Aspirant for the United Democratic Party (UDP), Maimuna Yahaya, Secretary, Nollywood Mandate Group (NMG), Oliver Duke Linchun, among others.
The chairman of the occasion, the irrepressible Chris Uwaje, noted that Nollywood has done well for itself but to get to the next level it needs to quickly overcome the challenge of distribution. According to the Oracle, “It is time for Nollywood to leapfrog the distribution of its content using the rapidly emerging digital technology.” He noted that Producers can harness the spread of broadband to benefit from the awesome multiplier effect and be able to sell rushes, mix and transmit movie files.

He revealed that with the current family structure and birthrate, Nigeria’s population could exceed the 380 million mark by 2050 becoming in the process the country with the third largest population in the world. Practitioners, he insisted, must determine how to get content across to the growing number of citizens regardless of their location. Nollywood needs a map.

Dr Anyamele remarked that Nollywood is a credible alternative as the nation seeks to diversify its economy. He stated, “If Nigeria is truly seeking options for alternative revenue sources then the creative is the way to go.” Everyone, he noted needs to rest, to relax and to refresh and entertainment is required in any of these situations. The entertainment industry is the future economy, Nollywood is the next big thing.

Prof. Umar Danbatta, Executive Vice Chairman (EVC) of the NCC, said that the commission’s proactive effort to achieve 30 percent broadband penetration for the country demonstrates its understanding of the power of broadband. He explained that the commission is promoting several infrastructure models to boost broadband availability. He noted that submarine cables that have landed in the country and data centres are still largely underutilize so there is enough capacity to go round.

Henry Ojiokpota, NCC Lagos Zonal Controller, who represented the Executive vice chairman, said that the commission’s proactive efforts to achieve its 30 percent broadband penetration demonstrate its understanding of the power of broadband.
He stated that with broadband digital content can be distributed further, faster and more economically.
Dr. Uwaje argued that because the disruption that broadband can bring can be both positive and negative, it must be managed strategically such that the bulk of the content will be local content.

Dr. Ali Pantami, Director General, National Information Technology Development Agency, (NITDA) in his presentation revealed that the agency set up the Office of Nigerian Content (ONC) precisely to promote local Nigerian content. NIDTA is keen to boost local content through creating the enabling environment to encourage creativity and local content production. Chioma Okee-Aguguo, represented the DG remarked that globally the trend indicates that oil and gas is dated and out-dated, wasted and wasting and that the empowerment of youth with technology is the way of the future.

Felix Duke, of PMAN consented that that the world has indeed gone digital and that PMAN is working with Microsoft among other players to use biometrics to barcode and encode songs and videos in furtherance of efforts to contribute to government’s drive to diversify the economy.
Sunny McDon, Secretary, Board of trustees of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), in his submission noted that Nollywood evolved out of the self-determination of its individual members. Today, the industry needs support and encouragement to reach the next level of growth.

He blamed the lack of genuine encouragement particularly from the government as a contributory factor to the lack of infrastructure.
Tolu Adeloji, Cinematographer, posited that to provide local content enough to fill 24 hours of programming requires government support.
In addition, relevant government agencies must work to protect content providers from exploitation.

Tony Akposheri, Veteran Actor, said that while it is great to provide enabling environment, the government must monitor what happens at the ports especially with customs. He related incidence of foreign partners bringing in equipment for shoots and being harassed at the airport by government officials. He said that efforts to promote ease of doing business must include massive education and reorientation at the ports.
Zeb Ejiro, pioneer Nollywood producer, called on the NCC to work out an interface with the movie industry. He urged that government to establish a special product for the movie sector just like it has for Agriculture. He lamented that a lot has been said about enabling environment but very little done to actualize it. Political will is required.

Dr. Uwaje noted that collaboration and synergy are required to bring together the relevant experts to move the conversations forward.
Henry Ojiokpota said that the commission is ready to work with Nollywood to explore options for mutually beneficial activities to grow the local content and productivity in general.

Uwaje noted that technology is an extension of man, and that understanding technology would help us appreciate how it can work for us.
Uwaje explained that while entertainment can play a critical role in the economy, the practitioners and relevant industry bodies must work conscientiously to sell their viewpoint to government.

Don Pedro Aganbi, Converner of the Nollywood Economic Outlook noted that video on demand is a growing trend and Nollywood must tap into it. According to Aganbi, “Going digital the movies can reach more people and more far flung places. If the industry is able to distribute a digital picture via satellite directly to a digital projector, the movie will be pristine no matter where it's shown. This will without a doubt help to develop enthusiasm for movies in faraway places.”

We need to harness the power of digital delivery utilizing the growing availability of broadband services, he emphasized.
Some of the suggestions to move the industry forward included the establishment of Nollywood Research Centres in the Six Geo-political Zones. The centre would be mini incubation centres for movie production and would be massive avenue to attract foreign investment. Others are the need for Nollywood to enlist technology driven people members and to consider setting up Nollywood Technology as a specialize segment and the creation of Special broadband bundle for creatives.

Clearly, as a country we need to double down on our soft power, entertainment. There is no reason why Nigerian music and movies cannot do what reggae did to Jamaica over the past decades. It is possible with broadband.

Celebrities / Don Pedro Aganbi Rescues Squatting Veteran Actress by newsagency: 8:29am On Dec 21, 2018
“Today I am so happy that after five years of sleeping in the cold at the National Arts Theatre, Mama Agnes Molokwo would be spending Christmas in a place she can proudly call her home. What a Joy, what a relief. This is what leadership is about.”

Those were the words of excited chairman, Actors Guild of Nigeria, Lagos Chapter, Mr. Don Pedro Aganbi after ushering veteran actress Mrs. Agnes Molokwu to her new home. Words could not describe the joy of Molokwu as she was surprised with a Christmas present of sleeping for the first time after five years in her furnished apartment made possible by the Aganbi who has done so well since he took over from top comic actor, Victor Osuagwu.

The story of Molokwu who has been in the movie industry since 2003 is a movie script on its own but suffice to say that her tears, struggles, pains of sleeping ‘outside’ is over.

Hear her: “It was a big surprise to me because for years I have been squatting. It has not been easy for me but I thank God for today. We had our Artiste Week and awards are usually given to some members. I had it at the back of my mind that I may be given an award because in 2016, I was given an award. I had to call the chairman to tell him that I may be among the people to be given award but if he can change it to money, I would appreciate it better because I was squatting. If you give me the award, there won’t be where to put it. He said ok. I will do it. When they gave award I was not given and some asked me if I was given I said no but the one I was given is still with me. And I thank God for it. The chairman then called me and said ‘mama come,’ he said ‘this is our mama, she is one of the strong members of the guild, punctual and contributes to all what we are doing but she doesn’t have a place to lay her head because she is squatting. He added that when he saw where I was squatting, that he was shocked. He called some people out and asked them to do something. It was surprising to me and truly they were able to get me a place. I have never seen a compassionate chairman who have the welfare of members at heart like Don Pedro Aganbi. He has set a standard that would be difficult to meet in AGN"
