Nigeria must design a tax system that is broad-based, technology-enabled and trusted by citizens as the country’s revenue challenge is not merely about the numbers but structure, mindset and execution, Zacch Adedeji, chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), has said. Adedeji, who spoke while delivering the maiden edition of Distinguished Lecture Series of the University of Ilesa, Osun State, on Friday, explained that revenue diversification is no longer a policy preference but a national imperative. Speaking on the topic Economic Resilience in an Era of Dwindling Revenue, Adedeji said it was important to restructure the productive base of the economy from crude oil and embrace a system with multiple engines of growth in agro-processing, digital economy, creative industry and solid minerals, among others. A statement by Dare Adekanmbi, Special Adviser (Media) to the FIRS chairman as saying “We have made some gains, but resilience demands more than marginal improvements. It requires structural change, bold reforms and unwavering commitment to fiscal sustainability.” “The first pillar is the need to generate more revenue from within fairly, efficiently, and sustainably. Nigeria cannot continue to depend on volatile oil revenues or foreign loans to fund development. “We must build a tax system that reflects the true size and structure of our economy. This requires moving beyond a narrow band of large, formal companies and capturing economic activities in the informal sector, the digital economy, and high-net-worth individuals who remain outside the tax net. “It also involves closing compliance gaps through stronger enforcement, simplified procedures, and better taxpayer education. With digital innovations like TaxPro Max, e-Tax Clearance Certificate, and tax intelligence, FIRS is already leading the way in automating compliance and making tax administration smarter and more data-driven. Domestic revenue mobilisation is not just a fiscal task, it is a nation-building strategy,” Adedeji said. He noted that FIRS as the nation’s central tax authority was already helping Nigeria transition from vulnerability to strength. “FIRS is not just a tax collector. It is a strategic institution at the heart of Nigeria’s fiscal sustainability agenda, and it is undergoing one of the most profound transformations in its history. “To rebuild public trust in the tax system, we are modernising not just our systems but also our mindset and culture towards greater professionalism, integrity and service orientation. “FIRS is not waiting for resilience to be handed to it. We are building it from the ground up. Through automation, legal reforms, multi-level collaboration, and institutional renewal, we are laying the fiscal foundation for a Nigeria that can weather storms, adapt to change and grow sustainably,” he added. Speaking earlier, the Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Professor Taiwo Asaolu, said the two years old institution aims to use the public lecture as a platform for discourse on pressing global and national issues, while seeking sustainable solutions to the nation’s economic challenges.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has taken Olumuyiwa Odusanya, Vice Chancellor of the Lagos State University of Science and Technology, in for interrogation over a petition accusing him of receiving kickbacks from awarded contracts. In April, the Human Rights Monitoring Agenda (HURMA Global Resource Initiative), a non-governmental organisation, had petitioned the EFCC, accusing the VC and his management team of misappropriating an estimated N2 billion meant for course accreditation and infrastructure. A source who learnt of the VC’s detention informed FIJ of the development on Tuesday, texting: “Though I don’t have the details, it appears the VC of LASUSTECH is in EFCC custody. You might check it out.” When contacted for confirmation on Tuesday evening, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale said he could not immediately confirm the development, asking FIJ to call back on Wednesday. A call was then put across to Olanrewaju Kuye, spokesperson for LASUSTECH, on Tuesday evening. He confirmed the development. Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian auto manufacturer Nord Automobiles, Oluwatobi Ajayi, has accused Stanbic IBTC Bank of unilaterally debiting N700 million from the company’s account without prior notice or a court order. The allegation, which Ajayi described as “unbelievably unethical,” is part of a broader concern over institutional bias against locally manufactured vehicles. Ajayi made the claims in a detailed statement shared on social media (X), revealing that the alleged debit occurred in April 2025 amid an ongoing legal dispute over a Letter of Credit (LC) issued in 2022. “We didn’t borrow money from them,” Ajayi stated. “They claimed that the LC we took in 2022 fully paid at the prevailing exchange rate of N430 to N480 was no longer valid, and that we now had to pay at over N1,600 for transactions that had long been closed.” Full story below 👇 https://newsextra.com.ng/stanbic-ibtc-accused-of-financial-ambush-nord-motors-ceo-alleges-illegal-%e2%82%a6700m-debit/

The family of late Nasiru Semiu, a bricklayer allegedly killed by suspected land grabbers in Sagamu, Ogun State, has called on the Inspector General of Police, Nigeria Police Force, to urgently intervene and bring the perpetrators to justice. According to a petition written by the family’s solicitors on behalf of Haruna Parakoyi, Yinusa Parakoyi, Adewale Parakoyi, Azeez Waliu, Lasisi Abiodun, and Oyedele Reuben, the attack occurred on October 30, 2025, at Ajeregun Village, Konigbagbe, Sagamu, Ogun State, when a group of armed men allegedly invaded the community, shooting sporadically and terrorising residents. The petition listed the alleged assailants as Aboki Owoeye, Bayo Bisuga, Gbadebo Bisuga, Kehinde Ifeloju Adeshina, Idowu Dosumu, Sola Okunore, Taye Oluwo, Dada Oposu, Akeem (also known as West), Christ White, Hammed Olorunfemi, Gebu Seidu, Oscar and others. The group was accused of carrying out the invasion using firearms and other dangerous weapons, leaving several residents injured and one person dead. The deceased, Nasiru Semiu, was said to have been a hardworking bricklayer contracted by Oyedele Reuben one of the petitioners to work on a plot of land legally purchased from the Parakoyi family. During the attack, Semiu was reportedly shot in the hand and stomach and later rushed to Shotubo Divisional Police Headquarters, before being referred to Ogun State University Teaching Hospital (OSUTH) for treatment. Due to the ongoing industrial strike at OSUTH, he was later transferred to God’s Own Hospital, Ogijo, where he was placed on life support in the Intensive Care Unit. Despite efforts to save his life, Semiu succumbed to his injuries on November 5, 2025. The family’s lawyers described the incident as “a barbaric and senseless killing of an innocent man,” adding that the victim was neither a land grabber nor a cultist, but “a peace-loving, hardworking artisan whose only crime was to earn a living.” The petition further alleged that the attackers carted away the deceased’s motorcycle and mobile phone after the assault. The incident, according to the petition, has thrown Ajeregun Village into panic, forcing residents—both young and old—to flee their homes for fear of further attacks. The family is now pleading with the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and other security agencies to swiftly investigate the matter and ensure justice is served. “We are calling on the Nigeria Police Force and all relevant authorities to intervene urgently and bring these criminals to book,” the petition read. “Our community is under siege by these land grabbers who continue to kill, maim, and destroy lives without fear.” The petition also urged the federal and Ogun State governments to take decisive steps in addressing the growing menace of land grabbing and cult-related violence in Sagamu and other parts of the state. The remains of Nasiru Semiu have since been deposited in the mortuary as investigations continue. In a related reaction, Mr. Akanni Awokoya from Oyewole Bakere in Isagamu, Ogun State, narrated the painful ordeal, saying the community has been living in fear since the attack. “We were inside our farm when a group of armed men suddenly stormed in, beating people and causing chaos. We managed to escape and hide, only to hear gunshots and the cries of a young bricklayer who was returning from work and was killed. Since then, they have continued to sell our lands, beat, maim, and even kill us just to take over our inheritance. We can identify those behind these attacks, and we are pleading with the Nigerian government and security agencies to save us before more lives are lost.”

... secures 3rd term endorsement A Lagos lawmaker, Adewale Temitope Adedeji, on Monday secured the endorsement of traditional rulers, Chieftains of the All Progressives Congress and residents of Ifako-Ijaiye Constituency I for another term in office. They made their collective decisions known at an empowerment programme for 500 widows organised by the lawmaker in his constituency office in Lagos. Stressing that it was the first time they would experience real representation at that state legislature, the constituents said the lawmaker had made life easier for them. Deacon Banjo Omole, chairman of the APC in Ifako-Ijaiye local government, thanked his party for not making a mistake in its decision to field Adewale in previous elections. "APC does not make mistakes with its choice of candidates. Since we brought out Temitope, he has met our yearnings. Some others would have shifted away from their people, but that's not Temitope. He has constantly touched the lives of constituents. "Students, members of our party, men and women have, in different ways, benefitted from Adewale even though his main task is to represent us at the House of Assembly," Deacon Omole said urging residents to get their voters cards ready ahead of 2027. In his remarks, the chairman of the Community Development Committee (CDC) of Ifako-Ijaiye, Pastor Samuel Opajobi, described the lawmaker as an achiever and lover of mankind. While endorsing the lawmaker on behalf of residents of the local government areas, he added: "We know how much he has impacted the people of this Constituency." Supporting Adewale's endorsement, the Leader of the Ifako-Ijaiye local government council, Adebo Samuel Kayode, added: "We are happy today because we have not regretted having Temitope Adedeji as our lawmaker. We are happy we didn't make a mistake. "We can now see the result of our collective choice. It is no longer a story that we want him a third time. We only pray to God to continue to give us good health ahead of 2027." Oba-elect Matthew Ogundimu of Ogundimu Kingdom of Lagos thanked the lawmaker for his impact in the lives of the people. "His efforts in our lives have yielded great results and we can all see that. Let's not mind wicked politicians who would want to bring out candidates against him," he told the guests at the event. Thanking his constituents for their constant support, Adewale said his vision is to see that Ifako-Ijaiye becomes the most educated local government and its people the happiest in Nigeria. "We have promised that we will continue to give back to you the people that voted for us. All of this we are doing to show that we learnt from the best, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, who has continued in his efforts to make Nigeria one of the strongest economies in the world. "Our intention is very simple; we must continue to give succour to the people. President Tinubu is working to see that Nigeria is great and we must continue to support him," he said. He also promised free registration of health insurance for residents who do not have or whose registration has expired just as he announced that his free adult literacy classes which would commence soon, already has over 100 applicants. One of the beneficiaries, Mrs. Abosede Duduyemi, thanked Hon. Adewale for the gesture, saying that last time, he gave them N10,000 each, and that the latest is N20,000 each with the foodstuff more this time around She promised that she and others would continue to support the lawmaker while praying that God will continue to help him. Mrs. Grace Akingbehin, another beneficiary, said that she has been living in Iju area for over 40 years and has been in politics for more than 30 years, but that Hon. Adewale has done better than others.

With the level of growth Nigeria has experienced in recent times, the Bola Tinubu government deserves commendations, support and international collaboration, a Lagos lawmaker has said. Hon. Adewale Temitope Adedeji, representative of Ifako-Ijaiye Constituency I at the Lagos State House of Assembly, said this in a statement on Friday urging President Donald Trump, the American President, to reconsider his stand on the happenings in Nigeria. The lawmaker said President Tinubu understands the challenges and as a result, he has never stopped strengthening the nation's security architecture as seen in the recent change of guard in the Nigerian Armed Forces. "President Bola Tinubu, as a father, is not happy that bandits, terrorists or whatever name-tag they have got, have tried to downplay the gains of the administration just as they did with previous administrations. "This is one reason the President ordered the recently appointed service chiefs in Nigeria to put a final end to insecurity in the country. The current administration will never pamper terrorists or their sponsors," he said. Adewale, a ranking lawmaker, said in the last two years, countries and various global organisations have acknowledged the growing economic successes recorded by the current administration. "The Tinubu administration continues to open more economic pathways for progress. Different data have shown inflation dropping for the first time in years. More than before, the administration has attracted multi-billion dollar investments while working to reinvigorate moribund industries and maintain its place as the giant of Africa. Economic indices continue to prove that the government is on the right track and this has reflected in the country's currency continuously gaining weight. "For the first time, the sub-national governments are comfortable because they now have a level of economic power. "Thus, what Nigeria deserves at this time is global collaboration from the US and other nations in the interest of the citizens. Our youth and citizens must continue to be patient and trust in the 'Renewed Hope Agenda' of the government. "We must encourage Nigeria's new service chiefs to live up to expectations and do all that is necessary to ensure they put a final stop to insurgents in the country. Let's continue to support the government's giant strides knowing that the results would best fit our yearnings," he said.

The Comptroller of Ogun 1 Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Comptroller Godwin Otunla, has commended the Nigerian Association of Social and Resourceful Editors (NASRE) for its humanitarian efforts in supporting journalists facing health and financial challenges. Otunla gave the commendation on Thursday when a five-man delegation from NASRE paid him a courtesy visit at the Command headquarters in Idi-Iroko, Ogun State. The team, led by Mr. Bunmi Obarotimi who represented NASRE President, Mr. Femi Oyewale, briefed the Comptroller on the objectives and achievements of the association since its inception. Obarotimi explained that NASRE was founded to promote professionalism in journalism while providing welfare support to ailing and distressed members of the media. He highlighted some of the association’s interventions, including financial and moral support to former Ogun State NUJ Chairman, Mr. Niyi Ogungbola, who has been battling health challenges. “Journalism is often a thankless job. Many journalists face health and financial difficulties after years of service. NASRE Foundation was established to fill this gap and stand by our colleagues when they need help,” Obarotimi stated. In his response, Comptroller Otunla expressed delight at the visit and praised NASRE for its patriotic role in promoting balanced reportage and for assisting members in distress. He urged journalists to continue projecting the positive side of the country while maintaining professionalism in their reportage. “Every nation has its good and bad sides, but when we overemphasize the negatives, it damages our image. I appreciate NASRE for promoting responsible journalism and for your selfless service to your colleagues,” Otunla said. The Customs boss also encouraged the association to sustain its collaboration with government agencies and security institutions, noting that such partnerships foster national development. He pledged the Command’s support for NASRE’s future initiatives and commended the association for its transparency and commitment to social responsibility. He added, “The assistance you render to your colleagues is laudable. May the Almighty continue to bless your cause and enable you to do more.” The visit, which further strengthened the relationship between the Nigeria Customs Service and NASRE, ended with an assurance of continued collaboration in promoting national interest and public enlightenment.

…As Residents Commend Sanwo-Olu for Fulfilling Promise In continuation of its commitment to compensate owners of properties affected by the Oworonshoki regeneration project, the Lagos State Government, through the Lagos State Urban Renewal Agency (LASURA), on Monday, November 3, 2025, commenced the second round of enumeration for qualified residents. The exercise, which held at the Oloworo Palace in Oworonshoki, Kosofe Local Government Area, was supervised by LASURA’s General Manager, Town Planner (TPL) Oladimeji Animashaun, alongside his team of directors and technical staff. Also in attendance were community leaders, traditional chiefs, representatives of Community Development Associations (CDAs) and Community Development Committees (CDCs), civil society organizations, security agencies, members of the press, and a large turnout of residents eager to be captured. According to LASURA’s General Manager, the second round of enumeration became necessary to accommodate residents who were not captured during the first phase of the exercise and to ensure that every legitimate claimant is duly compensated in line with Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu’s directive. “About a week ago, we were here to distribute compensation to those whose houses were demolished for the Oworonshoki urban regeneration project. Some residents who were not captured during the initial enumeration appealed to be given another opportunity. Today’s exercise is to ensure that nobody is left behind. As you can see, the turnout today is even higher than the previous one, which shows people now believe in the sincerity of government,” Animashaun stated. He added that initial skepticism among residents had given way to trust, as the first batch of compensation was successfully disbursed last week, prompting many previously doubtful residents to come forward for verification. “Some people initially thought government was not serious about paying compensation and even considered protesting. But when they saw that their neighbours actually received payment, they realized it was genuine. Now everyone wants to be part of it,” he explained. TPL Animashaun assured residents that the compensation process would be completed without delay. “Immediately after we conclude this enumeration, within a few days at most a week we will return to distribute cheques to those verified, just like we did last week,” he assured. He also appealed to residents to maintain peace and cooperate with government officials to ensure a smooth and transparent process, reiterating that the Sanwo-Olu administration remains committed to fairness and the welfare of all Lagosians affected by development projects. Meanwhile, there was mild tension in Oworonshoki earlier in the day following reports that the Lagos State Commissioner of Police declared Omoyele Sowore, a political activist, wanted for allegedly attempting to incite unrest in the community. Police authorities warned against any action capable of disrupting public order, emphasizing that the compensation exercise would continue peacefully under adequate security protection. The Oworonshoki Urban Regeneration Project is part of the Lagos State Government’s broader urban renewal initiative aimed at transforming blighted communities into livable and modern environments while ensuring that affected residents receive fair and timely compensation.

...Says He Followed Due Process, Seeks Government Intervention, Justice A small-scale industrialist and promoter of Sevam’s Gases and Real Life Products, Mr. Tunde Taiwo, has cried out for help following the alleged demolition of his ₦500 million gas production facility by a Chinese firm, Sheng Xin Industrial Co. Ltd, and its local collaborators. Mr. Taiwo, whose company deals in industrial and medical gases, including carbon dioxide and oxygen for commercial and hospital use, alleged that his plant located at Peteh area along Lagos-Ibadan Airspace Way, Ogun State, was illegally invaded and destroyed by men who claimed to be acting on behalf of another firm, Sengen Industries Limited, said to be owned by Chinese nationals and one “Olugere’s son.” According to a petition written to the Commissioner for Justice and the Attorney General of Ogun State, the incident occurred in mid-October 2025, when over a hundred men, including armed mobile policemen and heavy-duty equipment operators, stormed his premises without any court or government demolition order, razing down buildings, production equipment, and storage facilities valued at over ₦500 million. Recounting how the crisis began, Mr. Taiwo said he lawfully purchased the land measuring one acre in August 2023 from the Asurugbe family of Ogere Remo, under Ogun State jurisdiction. “Before I bought the land, I went to the Ministry of Lands in Abeokuta. The government surveyors came, charted the land, and confirmed that it was free from acquisition,” he narrated. “They advised me to do the survey, submit all my company documents, and begin the process of ratification since the land fell within government-acquired territory. I followed every instruction to the letter.” He said that after completing all necessary assessments, officials informed him that another company, UNIFED, had an overlapping boundary, and both parties were advised to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). “We were ready for the MoU, but it never materialized. Still, we had no issues. We commenced operations peacefully by December 2023, producing industrial and medical gases,” he said. For months, the company operated without interference. The traditional landowners, led by Alhaji Awusipe of the Asurugbe family, reportedly attended the plant’s commissioning ceremony. “No one ever challenged our presence or ownership. Even the families who sold the land stood with us during development,” he said. However, Mr. Taiwo said trouble began on May 1, 2025 (Workers’ Day) when he was alerted that a 40-foot container had been placed across the factory entrance by individuals claiming he had encroached on their land. “They locked my customers inside and blocked access. They claimed we encroached on their property, even though their own land had been untouched, undeveloped, and only accessible through ours. It was shocking and provocative,” he recounted. According to him, he reported the matter to the Ogun State Task Force on Land Grabbing and Illegal Development, as well as the Area Command of the Nigeria Police. He also involved the Ministry of Lands and Physical Planning, where petitions were submitted to relevant authorities. “I wanted peace. I warned that if government didn’t step in, it could lead to confrontation or bloodshed,” he said. Mr. Taiwo’s worst fears materialized on Saturday, October 17, 2025, when heavily armed men invaded his property. “They came in about four trucks, five vehicles of mobile policemen with no identification, and a caterpillar,” he said. “When asked for any demolition order or official backing, they said none was needed because they were taking possession of their land.” He said his lawyer intervened, and the police temporarily stopped the demolition. However, by Monday, the attackers returned, allegedly backed by individuals claiming to have “court approval.” “At the meeting with police, they tried to show us a document that turned out to be fake. Even the officer who read it said it only mentioned adjusting a fence, not demolition,” he alleged. Despite the confusion, the group allegedly leveled the entire plant, destroying production machines, gas storage areas, administrative buildings, and perimeter fencing. “They didn’t just destroy; they stole. Some of the vandals carted away valves and gauges, thinking they were scrap metal. I lost everything I’ve worked for in over 27 years of my career,” he lamented. After the destruction, Mr. Taiwo claimed the same group fenced off the entire area, barring him and his workers from accessing the premises. “They fenced it completely. I can’t even go in to salvage a single item. It feels like my property has been seized in broad daylight,” he said bitterly. He accused a local monarch, the Ologere of Ogere, of being complicit in the takeover. “The Ologere’s son, together with the Chinese partners, were behind everything. They claimed to have bought the land in 2024 months after I had purchased and developed mine,” he stated. According to information seen on the CAC website, the company Sheng Xin Industrial Co. Ltd was incorporated in October 2023, after his own acquisition, yet allegedly produced backdated documents to justify their claim. Checks also revealed that the Ologere’s son is a director of the company. “They even forged a family member’s signature to claim ownership of all the surrounding land,” he alleged. “Even if they believe they have a case, the law is clear you don’t take possession through violence or self-help. You go to court.” He however call for Government intervention, Mr. Taiwo appealed to Governor Dapo Abiodun, the Commissioner for Lands and Housing, and the Ogun State Task Force on Land Grabbing to urgently intervene. “I want the government to call the Chinese company and the Ologere family to order. They should compensate me for malicious destruction and theft. The government must also determine the true ownership through proper investigation,” he said. He further urged the police hierarchy and anti-land-grabbing agencies to ensure that such acts of impunity do not continue unchecked in Ogun State’s industrial corridor. “This is how investors lose confidence. I worked for nearly three decades in the gas industry, invested all my life savings, and within a day, everything vanished. Government must not allow this injustice to stand,” he appealed. For Mr. Taiwo, however, it is not just another headline it is a painful reminder that in Nigeria’s property market, due diligence may not always guarantee safety, unless government institutions rise firmly in defense of justice and lawful ownership. “I only want justice,” he said quietly. “Let the truth come out, and let what has been destroyed be restored.” When contacted for his reaction, the Ologere of Ogere replied, “Neither myself nor my son was involved in any demolition of property. It’s better to direct your letter to the company involved. The manager of the Chinese company can be reached on 09127********.” When contacted, the son of the Ologere, whose name appeared on the CAC document as a director of the company, responded courteously: “Good afternoon. A Lagos-based lawyer, Barrister Goddy Osuyi, has faulted the claim by the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Jimoh Moshood, that he was not briefed about the alleged killing of a man by naval personnel in Ikorodu, Lagos. Osuyi, who represents the family of the deceased, said he was “shocked” when he read a report in The Punch where the Police Commissioner denied knowledge of the incident. According to him, he personally met with the CP in his office at the State Command Headquarters, Ikeja, over the matter, during which the police boss allegedly admitted he had been briefed but said there were “directives from higher authorities” concerning the case. “I was surprised when I saw the Commissioner saying he was not aware of the case. That is not true. I met with him personally in his office, and he told me he had already been briefed. He even said he got a directive from higher authority to release two suspects earlier arrested,” Osuyi stated. The lawyer explained that the incident occurred in mid-September when a retired naval officer allegedly led a team of armed naval personnel to a disputed piece of land in Ikorodu, during which one man was shot dead and two others were critically injured. Osuyi said the family of the deceased reported the matter to the police at Ijede Division, who transferred it to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti. He alleged that although two suspects were initially detained, they were later released under questionable circumstances. “When I asked the officer in charge at Panti why murder suspects were released, I was told it was on the instruction of the DC, who claimed the Commissioner ordered it,” Osuyi said. “But when I met the CP, he admitted being aware of the case and told me directly that he received a directive from a higher authority to release them, claiming they were innocent. How could they be declared innocent when the investigation had not been concluded?” He further alleged that the Lagos State Police Command had refused to arrest the retired naval officer and her son, also said to be a serving naval personnel, despite eyewitness accounts and available evidence linking them to the attack. “The woman who brought the naval officers is known. Her address and phone number were given to the police. But up till now, no arrest has been made,” Osuyi said. “Instead, the police have been harassing the community leaders who reported the incident.” According to him, policemen from the D-9 Section of the State CID recently invaded the home of the community’s Baale (traditional head), allegedly assaulting his pregnant wife and seizing her phone. He claimed the Baale was later detained over a counter-petition filed by the same woman accused of bringing the naval officers. Condemning the development, the lawyer accused the Lagos police of bias and attempts to suppress justice, insisting that the matter should be transferred out of the command for proper investigation. “It’s clear the Lagos police are compromised in this case. They want to sweep it under the carpet because the victim’s family is poor and has no influence,” he said. “That’s why I have petitioned the Inspector-General of Police to transfer the case to an independent unit, preferably Zone 2 or Alagbon, so that justice can be done.” Osuyi said the petition, submitted on October 21, 2025, detailed allegations of bias and professional misconduct against officers of the Lagos Command. He expressed disappointment that the IGP’s office referred the petition back to the same command for comments. “We are asking for a transparent investigation. The family deserves justice. A young man was killed in cold blood, others are in the hospital, yet those responsible are walking free,” he said. He maintained that the CP’s denial of knowledge of the matter was false and misleading, urging the police authorities to ensure the case is not covered up. Meanwhile CP Moshood Jimoh has already reacted that he was not briefed about the incident in yesterday's publication in Punch Newspaper

...Alleges cover-up as lawyer claims CP ordered release of suspects A Lagos family has accused a retiree, Mrs. Caroline Fagorusi, and some Nigerian Navy officers of being responsible for the death of their relative, Lawal Rashed, who was allegedly shot dead during a land dispute at Imowo, Ijede, in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State. The family claimed that the naval personnel, who allegedly accompanied Mrs. Fagorusi to the disputed construction site, opened fire on their members, killing Rashed on the spot and leaving two others hospitalised with gunshot wounds. The incident, which occurred on September 17, reportedly stemmed from a disagreement over a ₦1 million development levy payable by Mrs. Fagorusi to the land-owning family. A community leader and spokesperson for the family, Olatunji Akorede, told Metro that the tragedy occurred after repeated confrontations with Mrs. Fagorusi, who allegedly brought naval officers to intimidate members of the community. According to him, the family had earlier agreed with all allottees of the land—purchased about 40 years ago by a cooperative society—that each member would pay the fee and present evidence of allocation before beginning development. “Mrs. Fagorusi initially agreed to the condition but later reneged. Instead of resolving the matter peacefully, she began to show up at the site with armed naval officers. We warned her and even reported the matter to the Ijede Police Division,” Akorede said. He recounted that on the day of the incident, he was informed that Fagorusi had once again gone to the land in company of naval personnel. “Before I could get there, I was told they had opened fire on my brothers. One of them died instantly, while two others were badly injured,” he said. The family accused the police of showing little interest in the case, claiming that although three suspects were arrested, they were released within days and that officers later demanded ₦700,000 to conduct an autopsy on the deceased. When contacted, Mrs. Fagorusi admitted that she went to the site with naval officers but denied any wrongdoing. She claimed that the officers fired shots only after being attacked by a crowd of about 60 young men who allegedly tried to snatch their rifles. “After calling Olatunji several times without response, I went to the site with my husband and the officers. Some people began shouting and rushing towards them, so the officers shot into the air to scare them off. I didn’t see anyone who was hit,” she said. However, the family insisted that her claim was false and accused her of “procuring naval assistance” to violently enforce her will over the disputed land. When contacted, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Moshood Jimoh, said the case was not reported to his office and advised that the matter be directed to the naval authorities since naval officers were involved. But the family’s lawyer, Barrister Goddy Osuyi, strongly faulted the Commissioner’s denial, accusing him of deliberately suppressing the case. “CP lied that the matter was not reported to his office. I met CP Moshood Jimoh myself as the family lawyer. He told me he was aware of the case, that he had been briefed, and that the two suspects arrested had been released on bail,” Osuyi said. “I was informed at the CID office that the CP had given an order that the matter should not be investigated. When I confronted him, he denied giving such instruction but later said and I quote ‘I have a directive from higher authority to release those suspects because they are innocent.’ “I asked how they could be innocent when no investigation had been done. I also reminded him that the woman who brought the naval officers should have been arrested. But the CP said she couldn’t be prosecuted because she didn’t shoot anyone. I told him that’s not the position of the law. Someone who aids and brings armed men who kill is equally a principal offender. The CP still refused, saying they only plan to write to the Navy to produce the officers. I asked, ‘How will you identify them without first arresting the woman?’” Osuyi alleged that the police have since stalled all efforts to get justice for the slain man, describing the handling of the case as “a deliberate attempt to shield the perpetrators.” When contacted on Tuesday, the Nigerian Navy spokesperson, Commodore Aiwuyor Adams-Aliu, promised to respond but had yet to do so as of press time. Observers say the development again raises concerns over the growing pattern of security operatives getting involved in private land disputes, despite clear prohibitions against such interference. In August, Metro reported how policemen from Nasarawa State were arrested for their roles in a deadly land clash that claimed seven lives at the Owode Onirin Market, also in Ikorodu.

Ernest Azudialu-Obiejesi, Nigerian oil magnate is currently facing hard times as a consortium of Nigerian banks has seized his Nestoil Towers, over an alleged estimated $1 billion debt. The move followed a Federal High Court order issued on October 22, 2025, granting a Mareva injunction—an asset-freeze order—empowering First Trustees Limited and its subsidiary, FBNQuest Merchant Bank, to take control of Nestoil’s assets. The injunction, granted by Justice D. I. Dipeolu of the Federal High Court in Lagos, was issued against Nestoil Limited, its affiliate Neconde Energy Limited, and the company’s principal promoters, Ernest Azudialu-Obiejesi and Nnenna Obiejesi. Following the court’s ruling, armed police officers sealed off Nestoil’s corporate headquarters at 41/42 Akin Adesola Road, Victoria Island, Lagos, to enforce the receivership and prevent the movement or disposal of company assets. Eyewitnesses said staff members were ordered out of the premises as police executed the possession order. The court action arose from a debt claim filed by FBNQuest Merchant Bank Limited and First Trustees Limited against Nestoil Limited, Neconde Energy Limited, and their directors. The plaintiffs alleged that the companies and their promoters owed over $1.01 billion and ₦430 billion as of 30 September 2025, in respect of various credit facilities. Justice Dipeolu granted multiple orders freezing the defendants’ bank accounts and shares across more than 20 financial and other institutions in Nigeria, including Citibank Nigeria Limited, Central Securities and Clearing Systems PLC, Fidelity Bank PLC, Guaranty Trust Bank PLC, Globus Bank Limited, Keystone Bank Limited, Opay Limited, Polaris Bank Limited, Providus Bank Limited, Stanbic IBTC Bank Limited, Standard Chartered Bank Nigeria Limited, Sterling Bank PLC, Titan Trust Bank Limited, Unity Bank PLC, Wema Bank PLC, Gobowen Exploration and Production Limited, Hammako Consortium Limited, Krawcod Properties Limited, Santa Spring Oil and Gas Limited, Marine & Ocean Infinity Nigeria Limited, and White Dove Shipping Co. Ltd. The court further authorised Abubakar Sulu-Gambari (SAN), the receiver/manager appointed by the plaintiffs, to take over Nestoil’s headquarters located at 41/42 Akin Adesola Street, Victoria Island, Lagos, along with other identified assets. In addition to freezing Nestoil’s assets and those of its subsidiaries, the court directed multiple security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigerian Navy, and the State Security Service (SSS), to provide protection and assist in enforcing the takeover. The order also empowered the receiver/manager to assume control of Neconde Energy’s interests in Oil Mining Lease (OML) 42, which is jointly operated with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and its subsidiaries. The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) and NNPCL were further instructed to grant the receiver access to the oil block and cooperate in managing production and revenue flows. The Federal High Court adjourned the case to 7 November 2025 for the hearing of the substantive motion on notice. As of press time, neither Nestoil nor Mr. Azudialu-Obiejesi had publicly commented on the court order or the sealing of the company’s premises. The company has reportedly faced severe liquidity challenges in recent years, linked to mounting debts owed to several lenders.

By Ebere Agozie A Senior Advocate of Nigeria JB Daudu, SAN, has urged the National Assembly to maintain the status quo of the burden of proof provision in election cases in the proposed electoral act amendment. Daudu gave the charge in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the sideline at the send-forth ceremony in honour of the 42nd Set of Externs in his Abuja office. NAN recalls that the National Assembly had declared that as part of the proposed electoral reforms, it will cause INEC to assume the burden of proof that the election in issue was validly conducted. He warned that the burden of proof in election cases should not be tampered with or distorte, but must remain with the petitioner. The legal luminary said that the issue of neutrality of the electoral empire will clearly smear the reputation of the new INEC Chairman. ``The INEC chairman does not have the manpower for the task that the National Assembly is about to heap on his shoulders’’. He argued that such a measure could permanently damage the avowed neutrality of INEC. He noted that one of the foundational roles of INEC is to act as an impartial umpire in the electoral process, including in post-election dispute resolution. ``This means that INEC must discharge its duties without favour or bias toward any candidate or party, must not act in support of a contestant in the election it is supervising, and must maintain the perception and reality of fairness even after the elections. ``Once INEC is made to discharge the burden of proof, it means that INEC could align itself with the respondent who was declared as elected to prove or validate his due election or return. ``This will create an untoward situation, where most of those who are in the senate today, will just fold their arms and do nothing after 'winning' their seats expecting INEC to defend the petitions against them”. Daudu averred that where a person challenges the result of an election, the law presumes that the declared result is correct and therefore the petitioner must bring credible evidence to rebut that presumption. ``The question now is, should the burden of proof be reversed and the onus placed on INEC to prove that there were no malpractices or non-compliance which prevented the Petitioner from winning the election. “Or the presumption that the result declared by INEC is correct automatically removed or displaced and INEC become both the beautiful bride and lord of the manor. ``It means that all elections are suspect or invalid including those of the president and governors, until the contrary is established by INEC’’. He noted that the nature of the allegations in the petition determines the standard of proof incumbent on the petitioner to discharge at the hearing of the petition. He said that where it is a mere non-compliance with electoral laws the standard is the balance of probabilities but where an allegation of a crime is central to it, the standard is beyond reasonable doubt. ``So, the question is what happens to this established standard of proof should the legislature upturn the burden of proof. ``Would INEC be willing to go the whole nine yards to assist a petitioner to prove his allegations or will they merely sit back in cahoots with the winner, and watch the petitioner's case crumble. ``This contrivance is just a device by winners to kill off election petitions,’’ he added. He said that the present arrangement is that once a litigant applies for processes or materials used by INEC for the conduct of the election, the electoral body will provide parties with such materials applied for. “This could be in the form of certified true copies of ballot papers, election results such as the forms EC8 series and other electoral forms upon the payment of the prescribed fees. ``If the onus of proof is inverted and the lawmakers insist that INEC should provide them with these materials at no cost to them, then it will be clear that INEC will never have the manpower or resources to discharge that burden. ``The whole election petition process will not only grind to a halt, but unimaginable chaos will erupt and it is only then that the country will know and appreciate the critical role that the Tribunals and Appeal Courts play in dissipating the tension caused by electoral contests’’. The learned silk suggested that the reversal of the onus of proof will completely wipe out the pedestal on which the electoral architecture is based. ``The election result is ascertained in a pyramid form with the base being the polling station. Both the Electoral Act 2022 and the 2025 Bill maintained that architecture. ``It allows the collation of results to proceed from polling stations to the ward then to the Local Government and on to the state and for presidential elections to the National Headquarters of INEC. ``The results are admissible in evidence without the necessity of their being certified by INEC’’. He argued that the availability of these election materials first hand to all the contestants knocks the bottom out of the argument of the senate that INEC usually suppresses election results. According to him, the argument of the senate that INEC usually suppresses election results also does not hold water as the new bill acknowledges this process or procedure in section 60 of the act. ``This section regulates how votes are counted, recorded, and transmitted after polling. ``It mandates that results be entered in official forms, duly signed by the presiding officer and polling agents, announced publicly at the polling unit, and transmitted both electronically and manually. ``It also creates an offence for any presiding officer who deliberately violates these procedures. ``It institutionalizes transparency and creates multiple layers of accountability, making it easy for any petitioner to obtain certified true copies of results and demonstrate discrepancies where they exist’’. The learned silk argued that shifting the burden of proof to INEC, despite the above built-in mechanisms would be contrary to both logic and law. ``Juxtaposing all the points made above, who is now responsible for the low level of electoral maturity in Nigeria? ``Is it the electoral umpire INEC or the law courts that adjudicate over electoral disputes, or politicians who present themselves from time to time for election into political offices? ``Who out of the listed groups, engages in vote buying, employs thugs and other violent persons to disrupt elections, manipulates the electoral system in all the ways frowned against by law. ``We all know the answer and until our politicians find the courage and candour to participate in free and fair elections we, we will continue to be victims of manipulation and buck-passing,’’ he added.

The Lagos State Government has commenced the payment of compensation to affected residents of Oworonshoki in Kosofe Local Government Area, in fulfillment of its earlier promise to those impacted by the ongoing urban renewal and regeneration programme in the area. The exercise, which began on Thursday, October 23, 2025, was described as a demonstration of the government’s commitment to humane and inclusive urban development. Speaking at a well-attended ceremony held at the palace of the traditional ruler of Oworonshoki, the General Manager, Lagos State Urban Renewal Agency (LASURA), TPL/ESV Olajide Animashaun, said the payment followed a series of verification, engagement, and enumeration exercises carried out in collaboration with community stakeholders. According to Animashaun, the regeneration initiative became necessary due to the proliferation of illegal and dilapidated structures within Oworonshoki, many of which were built on drainage channels and waterways, posing serious environmental and safety risks. “Oworonshoki is one of the communities earmarked under the state’s comprehensive urban renewal and regeneration plan. Many of the affected structures were unsafe for habitation and constituted environmental hazards. However, in line with the inclusive governance policy of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration, the state made a commitment to compensate verified affected residents and today, that promise is being fulfilled,” Animashaun stated. He expressed appreciation to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to the welfare of Lagosians, noting that the payment exercise reflected the government’s sincerity and accountability in implementing its urban renewal policies. Animashaun also commended the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development and the Permanent Secretary, Office of Urban Development, Arc. Gbolahan Oki, for their dedication and tireless efforts toward the realization of the initiative. The event was attended by representatives of the Oworonshoki traditional council, Community Development Associations (CDAs), Community Development Council (CDC) members, civil society organizations, security agencies, and the media. It will be recalled that the Lagos State Government had, in recent months, cleared several illegal and substandard structures across Oworonshoki as part of efforts to reclaim right-of-way for drainage systems, improve environmental conditions, and enhance public safety. According to LASURA, a total of 79 beneficiaries were verified for compensation, to be paid in two batches with the first group receiving their cheques on Thursday, while the second batch will be attended to on Friday at the same venue. Some beneficiaries who spoke to journalists expressed gratitude to the state government for keeping its word. One of them, Mrs Ajimoh Oyenuga, said: “The government gave us this money as compensation for the houses demolished on Precious Street, Oworonshoki. We are grateful because it shows that the government cares about our wellbeing.” Another beneficiary, Mrs. Olaide Fatima, added: “My house was close to the water, and it wasn’t safe. The government promised to compensate us, and today they have done it. I really appreciate this gesture promise made, promise kept.” The LASURA boss reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to ensuring that urban renewal projects across Lagos are implemented with fairness and transparency, while prioritizing the welfare of residents and communities affected by development projects.

…CP Jimoh Visits Scene, Commends Tactical Teams for Swift Action The Lagos State Police Command has recorded another major breakthrough in its fight against crime with the arrest of a five-man armed robbery syndicate responsible for multiple car thefts and armed attacks across Lagos, Ogun, and Edo States. The suspects were apprehended by operatives of the Anti-Robbery and Anti-Kidnapping Squad after a sustained intelligence-led operation that tracked their activities to the Igando area of Lagos. During the operation, the police recovered two vehicles, a pump-action rifle, an English pistol, several live cartridges, and assorted charms. A Lexus ES350 earlier linked to the gang was also recovered at a workshop in Ibadan, Oyo State. Speaking during a press briefing at the residence of one of the suspects in Igando, the Commissioner of Police, CP Moshood Olorundare Jimoh, commended the tactical team for their professionalism and the speed with which the operation was executed. “I am here today to commend our officers for a well-coordinated operation that led to the dismantling of this gang,” CP Jimoh said. “The Anti-Robbery and Anti-Kidnapping Squad acted on credible intelligence to arrest these suspects and recover several stolen vehicles and firearms used during their operations.” According to the CP, the gang’s driver who has lived in the area since 2013 was arrested alongside other members of the syndicate. Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects specialized in stealing vehicles and robbing motorists at gunpoint, often disguising as passengers to lure victims. One of the suspects, nicknamed Pastor, told investigators that he was only called by that title because of the “spiritual services” he rendered to the group. Another suspect admitted receiving ₦500,000 per operation as his share of the loot. Victim’s Report Sparked the Investigation The successful operation stemmed from a complaint lodged by one of the victims, Mr. Seyi, whose Lexus ES350 was stolen on September 7 at Amikanle, Alagbado, Lagos. His report, channelled through a journalist to the Police Command, prompted a thorough investigation that uncovered the gang’s network and led to their eventual arrest. Recounting his experience, Seyi narrated how the robbers accosted him at gunpoint, dispossessed him of his valuables, and drove off in his vehicle. “I was terrified but thankful they didn’t harm me. I immediately reported to the police, and within days, they tracked my car to Ibadan. I am deeply grateful to the Lagos Police Command, especially the Anti-Robbery and Anti-Kidnapping Squad, for their commitment and honesty in recovering my car without any demand for payment,” he said. CP Warns Motorists Against Picking Strangers CP Jimoh also used the opportunity to caution motorists especially private car owners and civil servants against offering rides to strangers under the guise of sharing fuel costs, noting that such acts often expose them to criminals posing as passengers. “I understand the economic reality, but please, do not pick unknown persons to supplement fuel costs,” the CP warned. “If you cannot afford to fuel your vehicle, it’s safer to park it until you can. We have seen how this dangerous practice has cost innocent people their cars and peace of mind.” Commendation and Call for Public Vigilance The Commissioner appreciated the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for providing modern logistics and operational support to the Lagos Command. He also urged residents to be vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements or individuals in their communities. “These arrests show what is possible when the public and the police work together. Every report counts. Speak up, and help us keep Lagos safe,” CP Jimoh added. The suspects are currently in custody as investigations continue at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, Yaba, ahead of their prosecution.

The Lagos State House of Assembly has said it is considering a Railway Corporation bill for a body that would oversee the daily running of the train and related infrastructure in the state. The Speaker of the Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, the Majority Leader of the House, Noheem Adams and the chairman of the transport committee of the House, Adewale Temitope, made the position known on Wednesday at a stakeholders' meeting. According to them, the bill aims to strengthen the state’s transport infrastructure and improve the efficiency in the transportation sector. In his remarks, Obasa, who was represented by the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Mojisola Meranda (Apapa I), said the stakeholders' meeting underscored the Assembly’s commitment to participatory governance and transparency. “Railway transportation is a critical component of modern infrastructure and social service delivery. It supports trade, commerce, and economic growth by providing safe, efficient, and affordable mobility,” he said. According to her, the bill will empower the proposed corporation to collaborate with public and private partners on effective service delivery. In his overview of the bill, Hon. Adams, said the proposed law seeks to create a Railway Corporation to oversee the activities of the train services in a bid to improve transportation in Lagos State. Adams, who is the sole sponsor of the bill, said the corporation is to operate, maintain and develop railway infrastructure as well as liaise with other agencies and stakeholders for effectiveness. "The bill seeks to put in place a more robust railway transportation system to reduce traffic congestion and improve socio-economic development of the state," he said adding that it is in the interest of Lagosians as their overall well-being would be improved when it becomes operational. "The purpose of the bill is to provide sustainable environmental alternative to rural transport. "Clause 2 of the bill gives it a legal personality while clause 4 establishes the board which comprises of a chairman that has at least 15 years experience in transportation services, the commissioner for Transport and others. "The functions of the corporation will include managing and maintaining the infrastructure and the daily running of the subsector as well as liaise with other agencies in charge of transportation in the state," he added. He said the corporation will have a Managing Director to oversee day-to-day operations with clause 26 establishing the office of an Inspector of Railways tasked with ensuring safety, operational integrity, and regular inspection of trains and tracks. in his remarks, Hon. Adewale explained that the hearing of the bill which was sponsored by Hon. Adams followed its second reading on the floor of the House. Adewale said the initiative would strengthen Lagos’ intermodal transport system and help decongest the state’s roads. “The goal is to make mass transit more efficient and accessible to all Lagosians, ensuring all transport systems are properly connected,” he noted adding that the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) would retain its role as the regulatory body overseeing the state’s transport sector. The private-member bill contains 28 clauses. In his contribution, Engr. Festus Todowede, who represented the Director-General of the Lagos State Safety Commission, stressed the need to prioritize passenger safety in the state.

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mohamed Ndarani, SAN has called for the investigation of all retired Chief Executive Officers and Directors in MDAs as well as public office holders ahead of the 2027 general elections. Ndarani who made the call at a news briefing on Wednesday in Abuja said the call was necessary as another set of elections and the accompanying electioneering campaigning are practically around already. He suggested that retired civil servants should be barred from contesting for any elective positions for at least one year to give the anti-corruption agencies the opportunity to investigate them. ``People with political ambitions are already beginning to throw their hats into the ring all the way from the local government tier to the presidency. ``Among those expected to emerge as political gladiators are retired civil servants, or those who resigned from public service or political appointments. ``A most instructive question here however is, after they leave the service, what happens? Do they routinely get investigated with their post-service assets by the anti-corruption agencies juxtaposed with what they had when they joined public service? He said it is mandatory for public servants to declare their assets under the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) but sadly, this is hardly the case, except there is reason to investigate the individual. ``In the first instance there are laws under the Electoral Act 2022 guiding the financing of election campaigns which has never been followed in Nigeria. ``Section 88(2-7) stipulates the limits allowed for election expenses. Everybody just pays lip service to this veritable check and potential block to the activities of corrupt officials. ``This explains the main reason why many of them while in public service, line their pockets by every possible means, in anticipation of their making a foray into politics. ``It is cause for great concern that we hardly ever hear of politicians being sanctioned for running foul of the provisions of the said section 88(2-7)’’. He frowned at the reluctance and at times outright refusal by public officials to publicly declare and submit their Asset declaration Forms. The learned silk argued that non-compliance with the provisions of the CCB is responsible for the high level of corruption in the public service of Nigeria. ``Sadly, our politicians have been known to flout these laws with total impunity. They spend humongous amounts of money and in the process, stand the rest of the electoral laws on their heads. ``The tendency for public servants in Nigeria to plunder the nation’s treasury with shocking impunity during their employment is alarming and this is because they want to contest for political offices after retirement. ``This gets progressively worse as the date of their disengagement approaches, they do this to amass vast amounts of money with which to fund their election campaigns. ``These elections usually see them work their way into lofty political positions that would further enhance their ability to further milk the nation, often with little or no accountability’’. He said these politicians go into the political office with little or nothing to their names but they come out with huge assets and monstrous amounts of money stashed away. ``When the work their way into office, they plunder the treasury and divert money meant for constituency projects and other development projects into their personal accounts. ``This has to stop if Nigeria must make progress,’’ he advised. He reiterated that all political office holders should also be investigated, whether they are coming back for second tenure or not to learn the sources of their current assets and incomes. ``This is especially necessary when they are found to have inexplicably amassed unusually huge amounts of funds and assets which could not possibly have accrued from gainful, legitimate endeavours. ``So anyone who retires from public service and almost right away jumps unto into partisan politics, deserves forensic examination. ``Although the Code of Conduct was put in place to checkmate the tendency for public office holders to loot the public treasury while in office, sadly, that doesn’t seem to have been effective enough’’. He added that all heads of MDAs that are retired, or have been relieved of their jobs should also be investigated whether they are contesting or not. ``Corruption remains one of the greatest obstacles to Nigeria’s development. It calls for stronger accountability measures to ensure that public resources are not wasted or diverted into a few private pockets. ``Nigerians deserve leaders who live modestly; account for every naira spent, and put the nation’s welfare above personal gain’’. He advised Nigerians to play their part by holding leaders accountable and participating actively in civic life. ``We are now getting ready for the 2027 general elections. Anti-Graft agencies and INEC have enough time to investigate all the above mentioned interest groups, to curb corruption during and after elections. ``I humbly urge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to apply the provision of section 315 of 1999 of the constitution (as amended) to reflect all my above legal opinion. ``This will save Nigeria from electing bad and corrupt leaders into political offices come 2027. ``I equally advise our president to create an enabling platform that will prevent retired public office holders from being able to use looted funds to contest elections,’’ he concluded.

By Adeyemi Obadimu In a year defined by growing economic uncertainty and youth unemployment across emerging markets, Nestlé has intensified its investment in youth empowerment and skills development rolling out a suite of transformative initiatives across Africa and other regions under its global “Nestlé Needs YOUth” agenda. From Lagos to Nairobi, Cairo to Kuala Lumpur, the food and beverage giant has positioned itself not just as a nutrition leader but also as a partner in shaping the next generation of entrepreneurs, technicians, and changemakers. A Vision Beyond the Factory Gate At the heart of Nestlé’s 2025 youth strategy is a renewed belief that sustainable business growth must go hand-in-hand with human development. The company’s interventions ranging from technical training to entrepreneurship workshops have impacted thousands of young people this year alone. In Nigeria, Nestlé’s Agbara Technical Training Centre graduated its 8th cohort in September, producing 20 new technical professionals after an 18-month intensive program blending theory, hands-on manufacturing experience, and life skills. The initiative, launched to bridge the country’s industrial skills gap, continues to be a beacon of hope for young Nigerians seeking productive employment. “Our aim is to prepare young people not just for jobs, but for lifelong careers,” said Victoria Uwadoka, Corporate Communications and Public Affairs Manager, Nestlé Nigeria. “We are helping them build the confidence, creativity, and technical capacity to thrive in today’s evolving economy.” Street to Skill: Empowering the Informal Economy Earlier in May, Nestlé Professional’s “My Own Business” (MYOWBU) project in Lagos trained over 300 young vendors and food entrepreneurs. The workshops equipped participants with modern business management techniques, hygiene best practices, and digital marketing skills while also integrating environmental awareness through the “Clean with MYOWBU” recycling initiative. Participants were given starter packs, mentorship sessions, and micro-financing guidance to help scale their street food businesses responsibly. The impact, according to community observers, has been immediate: several beneficiaries have since expanded operations, employed assistants, and introduced eco-friendly packaging into their businesses. “This is empowerment that goes beyond talk,” said Azeezat Adigun, one of the beneficiaries. “Nestlé has shown that young entrepreneurs can be trained and trusted to build decent livelihoods from the street economy.” Global Partnerships for Local Impact In March 2025, Nestlé announced a global collaboration with UNESCO to support 100 youth-led projects focused on environmental sustainability, digital innovation, and agripreneurship. The USD 1.7 million fund has already begun disbursing grants, mentorship, and visibility to young innovators from Africa, Asia, and Latin America many of whom are tackling community challenges through creativity and technology. The partnership is an evolution of Nestlé’s commitment to global youth development. By blending corporate resources with UNESCO’s youth networks, the company aims to reach grassroots changemakers often overlooked by formal institutions. “The youth of today are the architects of tomorrow,” said Laurent Freixe, Nestlé’s CEO for Zone Latin America and the driving force behind the global youth agenda. “Our responsibility as a company is to open doors doors that lead to opportunity, innovation, and purpose.” Building a Sustainable Future Through Skills Nestlé’s interventions extend beyond entrepreneurship and technical training. The company has strengthened collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture in Nigeria to develop a Dairy Technical Skills Programme, unveiled during World Milk Day in June 2025. The initiative seeks to train local dairy farmers, improve milk collection systems, and increase the participation of youth and women in the agricultural value chain. By investing in capacity building within the rural economy, Nestlé is helping to build a new generation of skilled agripreneurs equipped with both technical know-how and business acumen. Education Meets Industry Elsewhere, in Asia, the company has expanded its partnership with leading universities including Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) and Malaysia University of Science and Technology (MUST) to provide internships, job shadowing, and career coaching to thousands of students under the Nestlé Needs YOUth programme. The model has inspired new regional collaborations in Africa, with universities in Kenya and Ghana already in talks to replicate the partnership structure. An Evolving Commitment Nestlé’s 2025 youth empowerment portfolio illustrates a broader shift in corporate responsibility one that treats young people not as beneficiaries, but as partners in innovation. Through structured training, entrepreneurship incubation, and education-industry collaboration, Nestlé is building a pipeline of skilled professionals who can contribute to economic resilience and sustainability. As the year draws to a close, the results speak for themselves: thousands of young people equipped with new skills, hundreds of small enterprises rejuvenated, and a growing recognition that youth empowerment is not charity it is strategy.
