Nairaland GeneralAbdulsalami Abubakar University Of Agriculture And Climate Action, Mokwa: A Huge by Newsextra014(op): 5:03pm On Dec 14, 2024
By Mohammed Ndarani Mohammed SAN.

On Tuesday, the 10th of December, 2024, the National Universities Commission (NUC) via a letter issued by the Acting Executive Secretary of the Commission, Mr Chris Maiyaki, and addressed to the Executive Governor of Niger State, His Excellency, Alhaji Mohammed Bago, conveyed the approval of the Commission for the establishment of the Abdulsalami Abubakar University of Agriculture and Climate Action, Mokwa. With this approval, Abdulsalami Abubakar University of Agriculture and Climate Action has become the 65th State University and the 277th University in the Nigerian University System.

This feat is remarkable for many reasons. Five, however stand out. First, the establishment of this University speaks to the vibrant vision of the farmer Governor of Niger State, Alhaji Mohammed Umar Bago, for education. This University is not the first State-owned University in Niger State. Before it, the State already has the Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai. Instituting the framework for another State-owned University, this time, a specialised one, speaks to the contemporaneous acuity of the Executive Governor of the State with the current challenging realities. What better and stronger way of projecting this preparation than by the enactment of the establishment law and the preparation of the relevant documents that contain the blueprint for the successful take-off of the University? As Nelson Mandela said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which can be used to change the world.”

Second, the establishment of this University will serve the additional purpose of reducing, considerably, the rate of unemployment in the State. This it will do by the creation of diverse opportunities. Apart from the direct employment opportunities are found in the administration, teaching and support services, there is also the indirect employment opportunities which will serve to mop up the unskilled labour that is often the focus of attention for terror recruitments.

In addition to these, the university, being a specialized university, will equip the students with marketable skills, especially in the area of climate action – a subject that is currently occupying the attention of the world. There is also the pull the university will exert in attracting businesses, especially in research and technology, with the additional advantage of serving as a hub that can foster innovation and entrepreneurship, often through research and startup incubators. It is expected that these and other untapped potentials will catalyse the economic growth and development of Mokwa in particular and Niger State in general and plant it firmly in the firmament of other notable university towns such as Cambridge, in Massachesetts, United States, which is home to Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Oxford, United Kingdom which is home to University of Oxford, leuven, Belgium which is home to University of Leuven and Stellenbosch which is home to Stellenbosch University. There is also Stanford, in California, United States, which is home to Stanford University which feeds the tech-driven economy of California through the provision of the skills that fuel Silicon Valley.

Third, the establishment of a university of agriculture is very important in this age when food security has become a dire concern. Statistics around the globe paint a foreboding picture that leaves one in palpable tension. For instance, in Nigeria, it is reported that at least 26.5 million people suffered from food insecurity in 2024 as a result of the wildly unpredictable farming season and its frequent flash floods and long months of drought. Kenya also faced periodic food crises owing tit e prolonged droughts ad climate change with 4.4 million Kenyans found to be worst hit. The sad story continues around the continents with India in Asia being ranked 111 out of 125 on the Global Hunger Index, with 35.5% of children under five stunted and 19.3 wasted due to inadequate diets and poor health services. The story is the same in Europe and in the Americas with Ukraine and the United States facing food insecurity challenges. This information can be found in the databases of the World food programme, the Food and Agriculture Organisation and the Nigerian Economic Summit Group among other specialized agencies. It is expected that the Abdulsalami Abubakar University of Agriculture and Climate Action will contribute immensely in combatting food insecurity not only in Niger State, but in Nigeria too.

Fourth, and this is by no means the least, is the topical issue of climate change. His Excellency, Governor Bago, by procuring eggheads to ponder over this burning issue and to draw up a curriculum that incorporates it has executed a brilliant masterstroke, the first of its kind in the world. Climate change is a variable to consider in any discussion or project that involves enhancing agricultural productivity and, by extension, food security. Climate change affects agriculture through a number of factors such as increase in temperature, changes in precipitation patterns and increased evaporation due to higher temperatures which in turn affect irrigation and rainfed agriculture, extreme weather events such as floods, droughts and soil erosion, shift in growing zones, pest and disease outbreaks, heat stress on livestock and feed availability for livestock.

The overall effect of one of these or a combination of two or more of these have far-reaching consequences on agricultural productivity and, by extension, food security. It is expected that the new University will design methods of combating climate change and thereby mitigate its effect on agriculture. For instance, we expect the University to come up with research on methods of adopting climate-resilient crops, improving water management systems and promoting sustainable farming practices.

His Excellency, Farmer Governor Bago deserves a huge dose of commendation for this innovative, naming the university after an indigenous natives of Niger state, former president of Nigeria General Abdulsalam Abubakar and uncommon step he has taken in assisting humanity in this moment of climate change crises by contributing to the establishment of the University. It is expected that the University will fulfil the vision of its founding father and live up to its full potentials of being a world class giant in its own field of specialised knowledge.

Nairaland GeneralBaale Of Ogun Community, Nurudeen Taiwo Accused Of Arresting Family Members, Pol by Newsextra014(op): 12:52pm On Dec 11, 2024
The Baale of Omu Penpe town in Obafemi Owode Local government in Ogun state, Nurudeen Bisiriyu Taiwo has been accused of misusing power to arrest his family members that tried to ask him for accountability by laying false accusations against them, hereby misleading police officers to carry out arrests.

Nurudeen Taiwo, who according to his family members had once been arrested for his alleged criminal activities, was described in an interview as unruly and disobedient to the people who supported him to his current position.

In an interview with one of his uncles, Chief Monsuru Fayemi Sonola, it was revealed that some years back, they came together to report Nurudeen Bisiriu Taiwo at the Ogboni house for his unacceptable actions in the community and even arrested after which he wrote an undertaking to start acting rightly.

However, Chief Mosuru made it known that when they as a family requested Nurudeen Taiwo to give account of some of his activities which included selling of landed properties, he bounced on them with thugs, cultists and police officers who have arrested about three of them on ‘unfounded allegations’ of transformer and pole theft.

According to him, the Baale had handed over some of their landed properties to some land grabbers without their knowledge but instead of giving accounts, he lied against them to the police that they stole transformers and due to that, the police has been picking them up.

Chief Monsuru faulted the police for not investigating matters before making arrest because many of them can’t sleep in their houses anymore because of fear of arrest.

“We took our Baale to Ogboni house in Abeokuta and they instructed that we go back home to hold a meeting and get back to them. We had arrested him before because of his misdeeds, he was involved in thuggery, cultism, drugs and other social vices and when we took his matter to police because he was causing unrest, he wrote an undertaking that he won’t do such again.”

“Suddenly, we asked him to give account of the landed properties he sold and things in the community that he has sold and since then, the next time we saw him was with so many thugs. He went to give landed properties to one Umoru, Atala and Wasiu in Ofada and we were surprised because as family, we should know about it but he never listened. He has now started conniving with the police to arrest us, claiming we stole transformers and poles in the community. He went to LANDS in Abeokuta and sadly, they didn’t investigate the matter at all. Their leader is ACP Mustapha Hakeem and in conjuction with SUPOL Kazeem who has been arresting our people without investigating. About three people have been imprisoned now and if we attempt to go to court, they make arrest from there because he has been promised landed properties and given money. Once they are arrested, he takes them to court and ensure they are imprisoned, we need the help of Ogun state government.”

“They are arresting our people for wire, transformer, poles and I don’t know how it’s possible that we stole these things. They didn’t invite us at all, they just started arresting and at the moment, we have all left our homes because of these issues”

Likewise, the junior brother to the Baale’s father, Ezekiel Taiwo lamented the treatment he has been made to go through in the hands of the Baale whom he literally made to get to his position. He explained that he sold his car to the baale but till today, he is yet to pay him.

The 82-year-old Uncle tearfully narrated how he has become someone who scout with someone because he has been threatened with death in the house he built in the community because he isn’t in support of the Baale’s actions.

“I supported him to be the Baale and this is the 14th year yet there is no otun, osi or other chiefs. I bought my car, sold to him but till now he hasn’t given me the money. He is destroying the community and going about threatening people. I have left my house for five months now because he has been sending people to kill me, I have ran for my life at the village.”

Furthermore, Tajudeen Oresanya, a hotelier from a border community to Omu Penpe, Olusegbe/Penpe who is currently fighting for justice in court on account of the Baale’s misdeeds narrated how his life is being threatened because he is trying to retrieve the balance for his mother’s landed property which she sold to one Kolawole Alade.

He also fingered the police in all of these while expressing surprise at how the Baale is trying to influence threats against him despite the fact that he isn’t ruling in his community.

“My mother sold landed properties to some people but they didn’t pay and the document is still on ground. After then, I saw that they came to arrest me from Alagbon for theft of poles and transformer and when I got there, I wrote statement and when they saw it wasn’t true, they released me. After then, police came at night again from Eleweran but they didn’t see me neither did they drop invitation letter. I was in my hotel one afternoon when they came again, and I followed them, I wrote a statement regarding what happened and I don’t know anything about the transformer, I don’t live in the place where transformer got missing but they have been harassing me so they can collect my mother’s properties.”

“When I got to Eleweeran, we went to court and I was granted bail but three days after I returned, multitude of vehicles came to my hotel to probably harm me but I wasn’t around. Umar Landgrabber in Ofada, Wasiu Atala, Lekan Jaluwon, Kolawole Alade were among and they destroyed the hotel. They were beating and inflicting injury on those I know and those I sold land to. They traced my vehicle that was driven by my manager and warned him not to drive the car again because they were expecting to see me in the vehicle. After then VSO went to my house looking for me, they went to my hotel to look for me and they even placed a N50,000 bounty on me. Meanwhile, the day I went to court, their lawyer didn’t come. This Baale and the langrabbers came during the first sitting but on the day when the case was adjourned to, none of them came except Hakeem Mustapha who had stationed a vehicle and planned to arrest me from the court but God saved me. Since then, I haven’t gone home in two months, my junior brother gave birth and till now, we haven’t done the naming ceremony. What I have with these people is they didn’t complete payment for the land, my mother sold the land to Kolawole Alade but whenever we ask him to show up, he says it’s the company that owns the land that will come. The Baale in question isn’t from our town, and I have the documents, please save us.”

However, when this publication spoke to ACP Hakeem Mustapha, he claimed that he acted based on anti-land grabbing law of 2016 and didn’t flout any of them.

PoliticsDSP Under Fire: Youth Alliance Criticizes North West Commission's Management Tea by Newsextra014(op): 1:46pm On Nov 25, 2024
The Youth Alliance for Sustainable Development (YASD), made up of youth groups from seven states in the north west, has accused the Deputy Senate President, Senator Jibrin Barau for trying to hijack the composition of the management team of the Commission.

The spokesman of the group, Mr Ahmed Sambo reveal this in a statement in Abuja on Monday.

Sambo, however called for transparency, accountability and fairness in the administration of the North West Development Commission.

He expressed concern over what he described as “lopsided appointments” in the composition of management and board members of the commission in favour of Jigawa and Kano states.

According to him, “A critical look at the composition of the management and board members indicates non adherence to due diligence.

“Board Chairman, Amb. Haruna Ginsau, Kano state, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Prof. Abdullahi Ma’aji, Jigawa; Alhaji Yahaya Namahe, member, Sokoto state; and Malam Aminu Sulaiman, member, Kebbi.

“Others are Tijjani Kaura, member, Zamfara; Abdulkadir Usman, member, Kaduna State; Muhammad Wudil, member, Kano state; Shamsu Sule, member, Katsina state; and Nasidi Ali, member, Jigawa.

“The composition shows that Kano and Jigawa got two key positions each while the remaining five states got one slot each,” he said.

He said that after securing the two key positions of the commission, Kano and Jigawa states also benefited from board representation, arguing that the appointments appeared one-sided.

He also faulted siting the headquarters of the commission in Kano, the state of the pioneer board chairman.

He pointed out that the commission was established in response to the yearnings and aspirations of the seven states in the region.

“Some of the cardinal objectives of the commission is reintegration and resettlement of displaced persons, restoration of economic activities halted by insurgency as well as improving infrastructural investments.

“However, the lopsided appointments could be detrimental to achieving these objectives, and the mission may likely be jeopardised due to personal interest,” he said.

He alleged that certain individuals behind the lopsided appointments want to capitalise on the commission to propel their gubernatorial ambitions in Kano and Kaduna states respectively.

“The individuals are still trying to manoeuvre and corner other strategic appointments, especially executive directors position to their cronies and political associates against all odds.

“We, therefore, wish to strongly oppose this move and call for an open and transparent process in running the commission for the benefit of all against selected few,” Sambo said.

Nairaland GeneralVAT Attribution And Derivation: A Personal Appeal To All Parties by Newsextra014(op): 11:53am On Nov 25, 2024
Introduction

I have read a ton of views on the proposed Nigeria Tax Administration and other tax reform bills. On one hand, some stakeholders decry the bills as being a contrast to the current administration’s championing for local government autonomy. Some, like the National Economic Council (NEC), last month recommended the withdrawal of the Bills, stating that there were too many controversies surrounding it. They called for more inclusion in the stakeholder consultation process. The Northern Governors Forum (NGF) in similar fashion rejected the new derivation-based model for Value Added Tax (VAT) distribution in the Bills. On the other hand, some wholly support the Bills and believe that its benefits are transformational and necessary. Each stakeholder and commentator holds their view in light of information that is available to them. And that is valid and fair.

But before I go into the lengthy details of my thoughts on this matter, let me share the definition of the two subjects that are crucial to this conversation: attribution and derivation.

The principle of derivation in revenue sharing ensures that revenues from taxes are distributed to the region or jurisdiction where they were generated from. For example, if a company generates revenue through sales in a particular state, a portion of the taxes or royalties from that economic activity is returned to the state. The principle of attribution, on the other hand involves allocating tax revenues based on predefined criteria, such as population size, geographical size, need, national interest, or expenditure responsibilities, etc, rather than the location of tax generating entity. Thus revenues are collected nationally and are distributed to states according to agreed-upon formulas.

MY VIEW

The present controversy is based on the VAT sharing formula proposed in Section 77 of the Nigeria Tax Administration Bill.  I have come to appreciate that the myriad of criticisms against this well-intended Bill may be as a result of the lack of clarity or understanding of Section 22 (12) of the Bill, which provides for Attribution of VAT revenue, requiring companies to file their returns on the basis of derivation by location (place of consumption).

This provision, from my understanding was included to cure an existing problem with our current VAT administration. As it stands today, in the existing system, VAT returns by companies are not filed on the basis of the place of consumption, but reported based on the head office locations of these companies. This means that a whopping 20% of VAT returns are distributed back to States where these head offices are located—whether consumption took place there or not; it explains why Lagos, FCT and Rivers always take the largest chunk of VAT under the current regime.

The proposed amendments of the Nigeria Tax Administration Bill offer a different position that emphasizes fairness and more equitable distribution of VAT returns. It proposes that VAT will now be reported based on the place of consumption, which will ensure that most of the amounts currently reported for Lagos, FCT and Rivers states will now be reported by where the consumption takes place.

The new rule will ensure that places where consumption took place get 60% of the amounts reported for them. For instance, if consumption happens in Niger State, the state would receive 60% of the VAT generated from its jurisdiction, while the balance would be put in a VAT sharing pool, which it (Niger State) would further benefit from.

In my view, this will result in a more favourable outcome for most states, when compared to the current regime that favors Lagos, Rivers and FCT. It will more or less redistribute most of the present allocation received by those 3 states.

My appeal to NEC, NGF and NEF as well as other stakeholders is thus:

A. We must not make the misjudgment of throwing away the baby with the bathing water.

B. Let us carefully look at the benefits of these reforms and weigh the impact on our tax and fiscal space versus the proposed amendments’ ‘perceived shortfalls’.

C. There is no single problem on earth that is without a solution. In this light, we should think out of the box and suggest workable solutions to address or fix these perceived shortfalls, or we will be condemned to having our cap in hand at the doorsteps of the World Bank and IMF Headquarters more frequently than ever.

D. On a personal note and based on my little experience as a tax accountant, consultant and administrator, I would suggest to all stakeholders, particularly the National Assembly to go ahead and consider the bill, pass it to law, and have Mr. President sign same, but provided the proposed amendments to the VAT law will be implemented in phases bearing in mind the following:

1. FIRS is currently undergoing its own reforms; the FIRS Establishment Act has been re-presented to the NASS and is receiving their attention simultaneously. For FIRS to be able to function as envisaged by the proposed changes or amendments to the FIRS Act, then it must first fix the roof over its head to ensure that if any storm arises tomorrow, revenue administration officials and our money entrusted in their hands would be safe.

2. FIRS must also fix the issue of fiscalisation within the next three to five years from now. The need for fiscalisation is one of the key amendments proposed in the Nigeria Tax Administration Bill before the NASS.

Fiscalization is the process of using technology, like cash registers or POS systems, to ensure businesses comply with tax laws by automatically recording and reporting their sales to tax authorities.

It is an expensive project and will not only require political will at the centre, but also at the sub-national level. To achieve it, the FG, FIRS and FAAC must be ready to jointly fund this project. It is important because it will bring about transparency and accountability as well as address the issue of subjectivity which is mainly the fear of the members of NEC, particularly the NGF.

I must emphasize that Fiscalisation cannot happen without data. This brings me to my third point.

3. The FIRS HQ project should be completed, and equipped as a world class edifice, while ensuring that the entire floor historically conceived as the “National Revenue Data Centre” becomes a reality.

4. Item 2 above (i.e. fiscalisation) will not only address the issue of transparency and accountability, it will curtail the influence and excesses of vested interests particularly the tax accountants who are accomplices in the whole of this VAT issue.

If the amendment is passed into law, and its implementation is not delayed say by 3 to 5 years, the fear of the stakeholders would be justified because tax accountants are likely to be subjective (or used to being subjective) in the course of filing VAT returns (i.e., VAT attribution) in favour of the states of their choice or those of the choices of some of the political class.

As a tax accountant of your company, you know where your customers are located, if not all, especially the major ones. But when asked to file their companies’ monthly VAT returns based on the location of their customers, for instance, sentiments come to play. And even with the proposal in Section 77 of the Tax Administration Bill, the subjectivity is likely to continue.

Though it was an administrative initiative at FIRS in 2020, I recall that we redesigned the VAT Form 002 that required companies to file their VAT returns based on attribution. Only a few companies (less than 10) complied with our directives nationwide (i.e. file VAT returns based on the location of their customers.)

Fiscalisation will help our revenue administrators in many ways including boosting their capacity to generate more revenue for the Federation. It has the capacity to address or track transactions or sale of goods from a customer in one state to the other, particularly cashless transactions. It will also create room for the implementation of a system for immediate tax refunds.

5. Phasing the implementation of the two key controversial but necessary amendments to the VAT law would also assist the states to go back home, sit and weigh the level of financial inclusion in their respective states and address them accordingly. Recent reports on financial inclusion reveal that while you may have an estimated population of 10m people in a given State for example, less than 2m of that population would be financially inclusive. In some states, more than 70% of the population do not have a BVN not to talk of a bank account. So as a State governor, your argument that huge consumption is taking place in your state but the current ‘headquarter effect’ is affecting your share of monthly VAT revenue can only be addressed when your resident population are financially inclusive. It goes without saying that your problem would be compounded in the near future if buying and selling of goods continue to happen in your State using cash. Buying and selling of goods and services in this fashion will also affect your ability to improve on your State’s IGR.

6. The process of input-output mechanism in VAT input claim is another key issue that has been of keen interest to me, and equally needs to be emphasized here. The intended amendments and fiscalisation of Nigeria’s business environment will also help in addressing sharp practices or the abilities of business to manipulate the input claim in the course of filing their monthly VAT returns. This is because under the current regime if an item is purchased in Lagos and taken to Kano for example, the Kano company will not be able to claim the input VAT if the Lagos company fails to correctly disclose the location of its output VAT. With fiscalisation the Input claim of the Kano company will simply expose the Lagos company.

In my view, the following four (4) factors will drive compliance of the proposed tax reform bills, and this will mean more revenue to share to the states:

1. Attribution is now clearly provided in the law. It is no longer an administrative decision or at the discretion of the FIRS or tax accountants working for or representing VAT agents nationwide.

2. There is now a strong political will to drive tax reforms, this means that tax laws will not only be passed but will be well enforced going forward in Nigeria.

3. Technology deployment for VAT invoicing and fiscalisation is clearly provided in the new Bills, with the attendant administrative processes that are ongoing to implement same. It will no longer be at the discretion of companies to determine who bought what—technology will.

4. The processes and challenges in Input-Output mechanism in VAT Input claims would now be addressed using technology.

Finally, the many benefits of these bills are excellent. It behooves on us to give the NASS our support to pass them into law. But I hold that we should do so on the following conditions:

A. That the implementation of the Tax Administration Bill should be phased.

B. That the implementation (i.e. the effective date) of the proposed amendments to Section 77 of the Tax Administration Bill should be delayed for at least three to five years to enable all parties plan and invest in technology and the relevant infrastructure.

C. FIRS should administratively prepare the minds of all stakeholders, particularly the VAT agents, lawyers and tax accountants on the need to honestly file VAT returns based on attribution as a first step, because Section 26 of the FIRS Establishment Act (as it is today) is adequate enough for them to call for VAT returns based on attribution from all VAT agents in Nigeria.

D. The current sharing formula should be used in distributing revenue accruable from VAT to all parties, and all parties within the next three to five years (that the amendment is expected to take effect) would have played their part so that there would be equity, transparency and accountability as intended by the proposed amendments to the VAT law.

Muhammad Nami, a tax accountant and consultant, is the immediate past Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and Joint Tax Board. He was also the President of the Commonwealth Association of Tax Administrators (CATA).

Politics"Ugochinyere Is Pdp's Aberration, Only Cashing Out - Wike's Aide" by Newsextra014(op): 5:48pm On Nov 23, 2024
Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media to the Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has described House of Representatives member from Ideato North and South Federal Constituency of Imo State, Imo Ugochinyere Ikeagwuonu, as a "political hushpuppi" who was produced by part of the aberrations in the People's Democratic Party (PDP) that must be made to stop.

Olayinka, who told Ugochinyere to "stop going about masturbating about anything Wike," admonished him to face the reason for which he was elected into the House of Representatives so that his constituents will stop seeing him as a failure and consistently passing votes of no confidence against him.

While featuring on Channels TV’s Politics Today on Friday, Ugochinyere, had said that the FCT Minister and other G5 Governors like Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, former governors Samuel Ortom (Benue), Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu) and Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia) were determined to destroy the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

However, in a statement in Abuja on Saturday, Olayinka said; "This is one of the things you get when people who joined the PDP today are awarded the ticket of the party tomorrow morning. If not for the aberration in the PDP that produced a character like Ugochinyere, someone who only joined the party in 2022 won't be the one to lecture us about who is loyal to the party and who's not.

"If PDP had functioned properly, would a 'political hushpuppi' like Ugochinyere have gotten the party's ticket while still in another party? Even till today, as a PDP Rep member, Ugochinyere is still holding on to his Action Peoples Party (APP), using it to cash-out in Rivers State.

"Therefore, we on this side are not bothered because we understand why Ugochinyere must now mount the podium and accuse Wike of playing childish and kindergarten politics. He must satisfy those feeding him from the resources of Rivers State."

While mocking Ugochinyere for always having an organization to speak for to carry out his political hustle, Olayinka said; "In saner climes, such character would have been arrested, tried and jailed for impersonation.

"When he got to the House of Representatives and there was no title under which his political hushpuppism would continue, he awarded to himself a non-existing title of 'Spokesperson of Opposition Lawmakers Coalition in the 10th National Assembly,' claiming to have been so appointed by the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP).

"But the questions are, is CUPP a political party with members in the House of Representatives? Where and when was CUPP registered? Apart from the positions of Minority Leader, Deputy Minority Leader, Minority Whip and Deputy Minority Whip, is there anything like spokesperson of opposition lawmakers in the National Assembly?

"Being a political hustler that he has always been, Ugochinyere, knew that he will be contravening the rules of the National Assembly by allocating to himself, a non-existing position, but he just must have a title to keep his hustle going, and indeed, it has been booming.

"Impersonating as spokesperson of opposition lawmakers in the House of Representatives, Ugochinyere has been cashing out in Rivers State in particular. If he is not using his former party, APP, to cash-out, he will be using his amorphous opposition lawmakers to chop from inside the Rivers."

Nairaland GeneralOgun Border Communities Not Safe Haven For Smugglers, Says YYPM by Newsextra014(op): 2:00pm On Nov 22, 2024
A group, Yewa Youths Progressive Movement, has called on a Nigerian investigative journalist, Fisayo Soyombo, to desist from tagging border communities in Ogun West as "smugglers' posts" and the residents as smugglers.

The group, in a statement jointly signed by its Chairman and Publicity Secretary, Adeoye Akinola and Sunday Adeyemi, respectively on Thursday, in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, said it was not against the investigative journalist carrying out his duties, but he should desist from sensationalism, unnecessary embellishment and name-calling.

According to YYPM, Soyombo's activities in the name of investigative journalism have painted Ogun border communities as beehives of smugglers and cast negative shadows on the towns and their residents.

The youth group said that the recent social media post by the investigative journalist that vehicles loads of foreign parboiled rice had been stationed in some border communities ready to be smuggled into the country, was not only a ruse but a deliberate attempt to further disparage Ogun West.

It added that the border communities have since grown from being a safe haven for smugglers, who throng the communities from all over the country, to locations where legitimate inter-border businesses now thrive.

The YYPM stated further that immediately after the announcement of a ban on importation of rice through the land borders by the immediate past administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, traders and residents in the border communities embraced the pronouncement and swiftly diversified into order forms of businesses.

The statement disclosed that several entrepreneurs in the axis invested heavily in the cultivation and production of local rice in tandem with the Federal Government's policy of eat-what-you-grow.

The group further pointed out that residents in these communities, especially the youth, have continued to collaborate with the Nigerian Customs Service in its efforts to curb smuggling and other inter-border economic sabotages.

The statement reads: "As a youth group working for the development and growth of border communities in Ogun West Senatorial District of Ogun State, the activities of Mr Soyombo in the name of investigative journalism have no doubt cast negative shadows on our towns and portrayed our people as smugglers.

"It is indeed worrisome that while we are still working to remove the toga and label of smugglers put on some of our legitimate business men by this so-called investigative journalist, he recently posted on the social media that he was aware of thousands car loads of foreign parboiled rice hidden in the border communities and ready to be smuggled into the country.

"This claim is not only a spurious one, but calculated efforts to mislead the authority concerned and cause unnecessary tension. We are not against journalism aimed aty ensuring sanity and engender socio-economic development, but we condemn in its entirety, sensationalism, unnecessary embellishment, and name-calling.

"Our communities and people who were hitherto into inter-border trading, have since diverted into other legitimate ventures since the announcement of ban on importation of foreign rice through land borders by the immediate past administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

"Apart from that, several entrepreneurs in the axis have invested heavily in the cultivation and production of local rice in tandem with the Federal Government's policy of eat-what-you-grow.

"We, hereby, urge Mr Soyombo to desist from tagging border communities in Ogun State as safe haven for smugglers. As an investigative journalist who is interested in activities of smugglers, we implore him to focus on other border communities in the country and stop engaging in a business of 'calling a dog a bad name in order to hang it', in Ogun border communities".

CrimeAlleged N2.7b Fraud: Ex-bpp Director Testifies Against Former Minister Hadi Siri by Newsextra014(op): 10:04am On Nov 20, 2024
EFCC is prosecuting Sirika, his daughter Fatima, Jalal Sule Hamma, and Al-Duraq Investment Nigeria Limited

A witness for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Musa Odiniya, testified in an Abuja High Court yesterday that Al-Duraq Investment Limited, which was established in 2021, was awarded the contract for the construction of the Apron Extension at Katsina Airport in 2022.

Odiniya, a former Director of Procurement at the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP), provided this information during the trial concerning an alleged N2.7 billion contract fraud involving former Aviation Minister Hadi Sirika.

The EFCC is prosecuting Sirika, his daughter Fatima, Jalal Sule Hamma, and Al-Duraq Investment Nigeria Limited on charges of abuse of office and contract fraud. They are facing six counts of allegations before Justice Sylvanus Oriji.

Sirika, who served under former President Muhammadu Buhari, is accused of misusing his office by awarding contracts to a company in which his daughter and her husband had a vested interest. According to the prosecution, the alleged offenses violate sections 12 and 19 of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act 2000 and section 17(b) of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (Establishment) Act 2004.

During the testimony, led by EFCC counsel Rotimi Jacobs (SAN), the witness stated that every firm bidding for a contract must submit an affidavit.

“The reason is that no contract should be awarded to a company related to a member of staff in the ministry where the contract is to be executed.

“My department cannot give a contract to a company in which, for instance, the minister is a signatory,” he said.

Al-Duraq Investment Nigeria Limited, the witness said he did not know until he got to the EFCC office and was shown a document from the bank with the names of the defendants.

“The defendants’ companies were registered in 2021 while the contract was awarded to them in 2022.

He also adjourned till January 23, 2025 for the cross-examination of the fifth principal witness (PW5) and continuation of hearing.

“A company registered within a year of the award may not have the capacity to handle a project. The company is not qualified,” he said.

Odiniya also told the court that the apron building and extension of Katsina Airport was valued at N800 million.

After the evidence of the witness, counsel to Sirika (first defendant), Chief Kanu Agabi (SAN), prayed the court for an adjournment to enable him cross-examine the witness.

The lawyer also prayed the court for hearing of the motion seeking for leave to allow the first defendant travel abroad with his sick mother for medical reasons.

Jacobs did not oppose to the adjournment but prayed the court to allow him speak with the EFCC on the motion.

Justice Oriji adjourned till tomorrow to hear the motion and deliver ruling. More

BusinessUk Based Nigerian Alerts Efcc, Cbn On Danger Of Card Pin Usage For Online Transa by Newsextra014(op): 10:14am On Nov 04, 2024
A Nigerian-British Chartered Engineer and Director of Information Security, Dr. Kingsley Chibuzor Aguoru, has petitioned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission) EFCC) and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to immediately put a halt to card PIN usage for online payments to protect Nigerians from being fleeced of their hard earned money.

He said he was making the passionate appeal in order to secure financial practices in the country.

According to the UK based chartered Engineer, with his over 20 years of experience in financial technologies and security, who pioneered the concept of OTPs for card-not-payments, he was compelled to bring attention to the critical flaws in the Nigeria's current online card payment practices, which exposes customers to unnecessary risks and significant danger.

Specifically, according to Aguoru, the continued use of PIN in online transactions put Nigerians at a grave risk of being defrauded.

Dr. Aguoru noted that card PINs were designed for face-to-face transactions at ATMs and POS terminals where secure encryption methods protect users rather than online usage.

In the petition cited by this paper, titled: “Urgent Call to Ban Card PIN Usage for Online Payments in Nigeria”, Dr. Aguoru explained: “In 2005, I developed a solution to tackle prevalent fraud in card-not-present transactions in the United Kingdom using both online and offline OTP models, drawing on Cartesian geometry. Although major networks like Visa and Mastercard declined the innovation at the time, my OTP model has since become a standard worldwide for authorization.

”Nigerian payment providers, such as Paystack and Flutterwave, and Interswitch still require card PINs for online card transactions, a practice virtually obsolete elsewhere or not ever used. Card PINs are designed for face-to-face transactions at ATMs and POS terminals, where secure encryption methods protect users. Using them online exposes consumers to serious cyber risks, including phishing, keylogger, man-in-the-middle attacks, even some dubious staff at the payment provider company can misuse customer’s PIN captured on the internet.”

He continued: “Nigerians are already familiar with OTPs for securing online transactions. However, it is critical to understand that OTPs should never be combined with Card PINs in an online setting. Instead, global best practices require using OTPs or Multi-Factor Authentication alone for online payments, which adds a secure layer of protection, an alternative to using card PINs online is to issue hardware card readers. With these devices, customers would simply insert their card, enter their PIN directly on the reader, and receive a generated OTP, keeping the entire process offline and secure.”

Enumerating the role of CBN in financial matters in the present digital age, Dr. Aguoru called on the apex financial regulator to protect consumers from cyber vulnerabilities. “I respectfully call on the CBN to address these issues head-on by prohibiting web PIN entry for card payments and enforcing OTP or MFA requirements across all payment providers.”

He advised the CBN to urgently steps forward for the safety of Nigerian cardholders by banning the use of card pins for online transactions and mandate the use of OTPs or other dynamic authentication methods, such as authorization through mobile banking apps.

He noted that there was need for consumers to be educated on safe online payments practice to minimize exposure to phishing and other cyber threats.

He said it was also necessary for the apex bank to enforce industry wide compliance with modern security standards to protect Nigerian customers, especially on the web, through policies, such as security, payments compliance policies.

Aguoru emphasized that by adopting these measures, the CBN will greatly reduce the risks Nigerian consumers face and bring the nation’s payment systems in with international best practice.

Akindele, promoter of the Energy Infrastructure Park financed by the Nigeria Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) in Okpoama Community in Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, initially mooted the idea of the project to the Board and the NCDMB embraced it with a counterpart funding of about $35 million.

Nairaland General“life Has Been Hard For Us” – Widow Of Murdered LCDA Staff, Idowu Keshinro Crie by Newsextra014(op): 1:38pm On Oct 31, 2024
The widow of Idowu Keshinro, the murdered Ota Ikosi Ejinrin LCDA staff has cried out for justice following the gruesome killing of her husband whom she had three children with.

The widow, Funke Keshinro stated that since her husband was killed, life has not been the same for her and the children because the deceased was the breadwinner of the family.

She revealed that she had to change the schools of the children because it’s been difficult to afford the private schools their father had enrolled them in before he died.

‘’Since my husband died, life has not been easy at all because when he was alive, he never joked with his children but now, it’s just me alone and it’s not easy. Since he died, I had to change the schools of the children to government-owned schools from private schools because I can’t continue all he used to do.’’

While speaking on what she wants from the government, Funke asserted that she wants justice for deceased husband. She mentioned that she doesn’t want the person that killed her husband to live because there are rumours that the arrested suspect would be released at the next court sitting slated for November 26.

Some of the suspects involved in this murder include Mukaila Salau, Tiamiyu Ahmed, Waliu Suleimon, Ibrahim Ekemode, Akande Ahmed Omogbemi, Abubakar Suleiman Mayaki, and others who are currently at large.

Funke tearfully noted that the children can’t recognize their father because they are still small, explaining how it’s been difficult raising them alone because their father’s life was cut short.

“I want the government to please fast-track justice; the person that killed him should also die. I want justice and nothing more. We have heard that they have arrested some people but we are waiting for judgement. I want a judgment that would be good for the three children and me. These children cannot even recognize their father because they are still young and I have also heard they want to release some of those who were arrested. Please, the government should help me, everyone that knows about my husband’s death should be judged accordingly.”

Meanwhile, in a petition dated October 18th 2024 written to the attorney general of Lagos state, it was noted that the suspects that have been arrested are currently boasting that they will be released at the next court sitting. They had been arraigned at Ogba Magistrate court on two occasions for their involvement in the murder of Idowun Keshinro.

The family of the deceased however, in the petition, called on the Lagos state government and Ministry of justice to ensure justice isn’t perverted for the sake of the deceased family and the peace of the community.

‘’It is our further brief that; other persons who are still at large with their syndicate are now intensifying efforts to ensure that they and the aforementioned persons escape justice by way of perversion of the cause of justice in respect of the subject matter.’’

‘’Furthermore, we have the brief of our client that the said persons and one KABIRU ABUBAKAR SULAIMON who is a brother to one of the defendants in the said charge continue to boast that the defendants would be released unconditionally as they claim to have connection to few politicians who would lead them to the office of the Attorney General and or have enough money to access same so as to ensure the Attorney General exercises his prerogative powers under the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to release the Defendants in the above charge unconditionally’’

‘’We believe that the office of the Attorney General is dignifiedly sacred and clothed with Honour and same deserves utmost respect or regard from all and sundry as the case maybe. The noise cum brag of the aforementioned persons to pervert cause of justice at all cost in the above mentioned charge has now become deafening in the circumstance of our client thereof Our client and members of his family are hapless and continue to live in perpetual despair and would suffer untoward agony in the event the above mentioned persons make do of their boast and intention to escape justice in respect of the said charge’’, the petition reads in part.

The family of late Idowu Keshinro, a former staff member of the Agbowa Council Development Area (LCDA) in Ota Ikosi Ejinrin, has made an urgent appeal to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu following fears that justice may not be served.

Although, suspects including popular land grabber, Abubakar Suleiman Miyaki, Mukaila Salau, Tiyamiyu Ahmed, Waltu Suleimon, Ibrahim Ekemode, and others have been arrested and arraigned before Ogba Magistrate court, the family of the deceased have claimed that there are ‘secret’ moves to free them unconditionally even though there is evidence that confirms the direct involvement of the suspects in the murder of Idowu Keshinro.

In a petition written to Governor Babajide Sanwoolu, the deceased’s elder brother, Akeem Keshinro explained that other suspects that are at large have been making boast of having connections with Nigeria’s attorney general whom they claim will assist in releasing the arrested suspects unconditionally at the next court sitting slated for November 26.

Furthermore, while speaking with journalists, Akeem Keshinro revealed that he can no longer sleep in his home again due to the different threats he has received for seeking justice over his brother’s death. He stated that he only stays in his house during the day but flees his home at night.

Also, Aslam Ibrahim, the youth leader in the community narrated that they were celebrating Easter at the palace when the incident happened. He made it known that they are after his life and can’t conduct his daily business freely over his involvement in seeking justice.

‘’We were celebrating Easter when the incident happened. We suddenly saw people with guns and we all ran from the palace. On the fateful day, Idowu passed by us on his way to the farm before we heard he was killed. They have been calling their family members and they have gone to the attorney general’s office to release them. I can’t work freely in the community because cultists have been all over me, I am begging the government to please help us.’’

Likewise, another victim of the suspects’ gruesome acts, Saula Lateef, an elderly man, narrated how he was beaten to a pulp by the miscreants who were confirmed to be Miyaki’s boys/

‘’I went to my site on Easter Day before deciding to go to the palace. On my way to the palace, I saw everywhere scattered and unfortunately for me, I walked into the midst of Miyaki’s boys who came to cause mayhem. I was held and beaten so much that till now, I am still unable to walk. It was a MOPO who was among them that asked them to leave me. It was few hours later that I was told that they killed Idowu Keshinro who was well known to us. Among those I saw was Mukaila, Hakeem Lawal, Jamiu Adeleja, Ahmed Tiamiyi, Ibrahim Ekemode, Walia Ojoge, Fowomeye, and others that are agents of Miyaki. We want to appeal to Governor Sanwoolu to ensure that justice is served because we are not safe here. They still have boys around and they are only waiting for those in prison to be released before they strike again.’’

PoliticsFCTA Cracks Down On Abandoned Properties: 3-month Deadline To Develop Or Face Co by Newsextra014(op): 7:30pm On Oct 21, 2024
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Administration has expressed concern over the increasing number of shanties and squatters taking over abandoned and uncompleted buildings, as well as undeveloped plots across the capital city.

The situation, which has led to growing security risks, has prompted the Administration to issue a strict directive to property owners to take immediate action.

Chief Felix Obuah, the Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC) Coordinator, highlighted the security threats posed by these abandoned structures. "These buildings and undeveloped plots have become hideouts for men of questionable character, thereby posing a serious security challenge to the residents of the FCT," Obuah noted. He stressed that urgent steps are needed to mitigate the situation and restore order.

As part of its measures, the FCT Administration is giving property owners a three-month ultimatum to develop and secure their properties. Owners of these abandoned and uncompleted buildings, as well as those with undeveloped plots, have been directed to take necessary steps to prevent their properties from being misused. "All owners must act promptly to develop and secure their properties within the specified timeframe," Chief Obuah stated.

Failure to comply with this directive may lead to severe consequences. The FCT Administration has made it clear that any property owner who fails to meet the three-month deadline risks having their land titles revoked. Additionally, such properties may be subject to demolition, according to the AMMC Coordinator. "We will not hesitate to take appropriate action, including revocation of titles and demolition of these abandoned structures," Obuah warned.

This move is part of the FCT Administration's broader effort to enhance security and ensure orderly urban development across the capital city. The rapid expansion of illegal settlements has been a growing concern for both residents and authorities, with fears that these areas could become breeding grounds for criminal activity.

The FCT Administration is urging all stakeholders to comply with the directive and work together to maintain the city's security and integrity. By addressing the issue of abandoned and undeveloped properties, the Administration aims to create a safer, more orderly environment for all residents of the Federal Capital Territory.

PoliticsDoris Uzoka-anite And Nonye Ayeni: Amazons Leading Nigeria’s Non-oil Export Trad by Newsextra014(op): 8:46am On Oct 20, 2024
On July 11, 2024, Nonye Ayeni, ED/CEO at the Nigerian Export Promotion Council represented her supervising minister, Dr. Doris Nkiruka Uzoka-Anite, the honourable Minister of Industry, Trade, and Investment at the launch of HerAfCFTA in Lagos.

In the speech she read at the august gathering of technocrats and entrepreneurs, Mrs. Ayeni said “It gives me great joy to join such a distinguished gathering in calling attention to two issues that are very dear to my heart – trade and female participation. I want to begin by thanking the UNDP for this laudable initiative and formal launch of #HerAfCFTA which is proceeding under the theme: Breaking Barriers: Positioning women to harness Africa’s trade opportunities… HerAfCFTA underscores the importance of collective effort by calling on all development actors to invest in securing a prosperous future for women in the unified African market.”
At the end of the prepared speech, the ED/CEO of NEPC spoke extempore for a few minutes and as she prepared to leave the stage she dropped a final sentence that set the hall agog, with participants rising to their feet to give a rousing and rapturous applause.

What did she say to get her audience clapping? Nonye Ayeni delivered a short quip credited to Margaret Thatcher aka ‘Iron Lady’, who was the first female British Prime Minister and the longest serving PM for over 150 years.
Thatcher is credited with saying that – “Sometimes, the best man for the job is a woman!”
Diversification of the non-oil export sector is a key policy plank of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration’s “Renewed Hope Agenda” and in giving a fillip to diversification, he chose perhaps, on purpose and maybe not, two eminently qualified women who cut their teeth as bankers and who both rose to Group Treasurer position at Zenith Bank.

Uzoka-Anite would subsequently become Commissioner for Finance and Coordinating Economy in Imo state while Nonye Ayeni was appointed pioneer Managing Director of Signature bank.
These two amazons versed in the intricacies of banking and treasury management and eloquent in the language of business and finance have received presidential imprimatur to develop and promote trade, investment and non-oil exports.
After one year in the saddle, it seems apposite to interrogate and evaluate their impact especially their focus on ensuring that Nigerian women entrepreneurs thrive in the international trade arena.

Dr. Uzoka-Anite upon resumption was clear in her approach. Her strategy is encapsulated under the “Industrial Revitalization Plan” which pays strong emphasis on the return of productive capacity as a catalyst for diversifying the Nigerian economy away from our mono-cultural dependence on oil.
Since her appointment she has made it her driving passion to seek investments and open up collaborations in growing Nigeria’s industrial capacity. Her drive seems anchored on the realization that anything built to last begins with a solid foundation.

Information is a globally recognized currency in our digital and connected world. This must have informed Dr. Uzoka-Anite’s establishment of the Trade Intelligence Unit in collaboration with other MDAs. The overarching objective is to map data and use same to attract FDI, expand the foreign exchange revenue base, create jobs and catalyse the economy.
Revitalizing industries in line with her encompassing strategy, requires funds and to meet that need, the honourable minister flagged off the Presidential Grant, Loan Scheme and Palliative Programme with the objective of facilitating financial support for businesses. Again, her ministry is working with a partner, the Bank of Industry to administer and deploy the funds.

Attending her first United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) as Minister, Uzoka-Anite announced the launch of the National Talent Exchange Programme (NATEP) which will create a pipeline of trained and certified artisans who will be in the vanguard of industrial revitalization just as happened in Taiwan in the 70s and 80s. Working in concert with another partner; the Industrial Training Fund (ITF), she noted that NATEP is expected to create 10 million jobs.
One year later on October 10, 2024, the minister posted on X formerly Twitter. “I am delighted to announce that the 1st cohort of the Federal Government’s National Talent Export Programme (@NATEPNigeria) is set to depart for Kuwait! This initiative, one of the key pillars of our commitment to creating global opportunities for Nigerians, has now unlocked 329 positions in various sectors, including Engineering, Healthcare, IT, and more.”

At this year’s UNGA, she signed an MOU with U.S. EXIM to enhance trade financing opportunities by providing easier access to capital for Nigerian businesses engaging in international trade.
Nonye Ayeni had an opportunity to present a score card on August 28, 2024 when she briefed the press on the H1 2024 performance of the non-oil export sector and what came across was a focused, intentional and measurable agenda for boosting trade and the non-oil sector.

She announced to her audience that Nigeria raked in $2.7bn from non-oil exports in the first half of 2024 representing a 6.26 percent increase compared to $2.53 billion earned in the same period in 2023.
The growth was attributed to what she said were “ongoing efforts to grow the non-oil sector and diversify the economy from the mono-cultural dependence on oil in alignment with the Industrial Revitalization Plan of the Honourable Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr Doris Uzoka-Anite and the Renewed Hope Agenda of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR).”

She also cited growth in many areas – a total of 211 different products were exported in H1 2024 with the top 3 products – cocoa beans, urea/fertiliser and sesame seeds – contributing 23.18 percent, 13.78 percent and 11.04 percent of the total non-oil exports for the period indicating in her words “a shift from traditional agricultural commodities to more semi-processed and manufactured goods.”

In H1 2024, Nigeria’s non-oil products were exported to 122 countries with total volume put at 3,834,333.83 metric tonnes. The exporters utilized 19 exit points made up of Seaports, International Airports, and Land Borders.
Under her watch and with the trade facilitation championed by the minister of Trade and Investments, the Nigeria Customs Service has designated Lilypond Terminal as a non-oil export terminal thus easing port processes.

Since becoming CEO of the council, Ayeni has championed fresh initiatives that have contributed to the growth of the non-oil export sector and these include “Operation Double Your Exports” and “Export 35 Redefined” through which the Council has selected the top 20 agricultural products to focus on. In January 2024, Mrs. Ayeni launched NEPC CONNECT, the council’s result-driven customer service team ensuring seamless interaction between exporters and the Council.

While noting that there is enormous potential for growth, she announced that NEPC is making sure that the potential is realised by supporting exporters from the farm gate to the export terminal.
This has seen the council providing hybrid seedlings and agricultural inputs for improved productivity. The pilot was launched in Jigawa state on October, 8 2024. The choice of Sesame and Hibiscus is predicated on the fact that the global Hibiscus flower and Sesame seed market size was estimated at $7.44 billion in 2023 and is expected to reach $11.15 billion by 2032 and there has been a boost in exports and revenue since NEPC signed an MOU with Mexico in October 2023.

Working with the World Trade Organisation (WTO), the NEPC launched the Standard Trade Development Facility aka STDF 845 project in March 2024. The focus is on boosting revenue from cowpea and sesame by significantly reducing the number of rejected cowpea & sesame exports at international borders through better compliance with Maximum Residue Levels of pesticides & avoidance of Salmonella contamination in the targeted value chains.
The council is also providing further support in the areas of capacity training workshops, certifications (Halal, ISO, Organic), labeling and packaging. In H1 2024, 90 capacity-building programmes were held with 10,780 participants benefitting.

To facilitate the export process, NEPC under Ayeni’s watch has established Domestic Export Warehouses to streamline and facilitate export cargo consolidation. The council has also launched a brand logo for Shea Nigeria sector and established a business cluster for the Shea sector in Nigeria.

What has Nonye Ayeni done to enhance the participation of women in the non-oil export sector? NEPC launched the NEPC-ITC SheTrades partnership to connect more women-owned businesses to global markets while facilitating women empowerment and inclusion in the non-oil export trade. The overarching objective is to enhance the skills, capacity and competitiveness of women while generating employment and export revenues through increased productivity of women-owned businesses.

To conclude, it is germane to emphasise the importance of the non-oil export sector in helping Nigeria diversify from over dependence on oil. A Vanguard report of October 14, 2024 referenced comments credited to World Bank Vice President and Chief Economist, Mr. Indermit Gill who spoke at the opening session of #NES30# in Abuja. “In the coming years, Nigeria’s policymakers face three key options. First, prioritize non-oil exports…”

Geo-political and domestic disruptions in the oil and gas value chain continue to impact both output and revenue and non-oil exports should be the game changer. The reasons are not hard to see. Nigeria produces over 1,000 agricultural products & derivatives in commercial quantities and we also boast about 44 minerals. Nothing spells potential more than those and we are lucky to have two tried and tested amazons in the driving seat of the non-oil export trade and diversification train.

PoliticsWe Must Build A Virile Legislature For The Future, Speaker Obasa Says by Newsextra014(op): 5:02pm On Oct 13, 2024
Speaker Mudashiru Obasa of the Lagos State House of Assembly, on Sunday, counselled members of the House to strengthen the legislative arm of government ahead of the future.

Dr. Obasa gave the advice in Abeokuta, Ogun State at the opening of a three-day budget retreat for lawmakers and staff of the House with the theme: 'Optimising the legislature's power of the Purse' for effective service delivery in Lagos State'.

The Speaker challenged the lawmakers to be committed in their legislative duties as they must leave lasting legacies for the future, strengthen governance, responsibility and accountability.

He charged the lawmakers on improved and effective legislative oversight functions being one of the responsibilities of the legislature.

"What we do now is really not about us; it is for the totality of the system.

"I appreciate this budget retreat. Each one of us must be responsible in carrying out the assignments we are tasked with. This is very essential.

"We carry out budget scrutiny based on what is presented by the executive. Once we give a go-ahead, it means the executive must comply and treat it accordingly because it has become a law.

"Going forward, all the reports of each committee must be presented at the floor of the House. This will help us decide on how to act for the sake of transparency and accountability," the Speaker said.

He advised the lawmakers against docility in the task of ensuring that Lagos continues to weather economic storms.

"We all have roles to play and, in doing that, sentiments and self-benefits must be removed. The day you start with self-benefit, you have become a failure.

"If you do your job the way you should do it, you will earn your respect and will be held in high esteem by the Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).

"We are here today again to look at how we can improve on the laws we make at the House of Assembly as well as our oversight functions.

'Let's continue to be dedicated and loyal and I am sure we will get there. Let's always straighten the path for Lagosians and those coming behind us," he urged.

In his opening remark, the Clerk and Head of Service of the House, Barr. Olalekan Onafeko, described the retreat as an avenue to have insights into the state's budget.

While commending the Speaker, he urged the participants to "be attentive and take home fresh ideas and knowledge."

CrimeCBN Staff Embroiled In Anchor Borrower Programme Scandal by Newsextra014(op): 7:22am On Oct 11, 2024
The department of State Service (DSS) has made shocking allegations against several staff members of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), accusing them of aiding in the theft of public funds through the federal government's Anchor Borrower Programme (ABP).

This bombshell claim has sent shockwaves through the financial community, raising
concerns about corruption and abuse of power within the CBN.

According to the DSS, the CBN staff members allegedly collaborated with private
companies to override guidelines and access funds meant for farmers, with no intention of repaying the loans.

This brazen scheme has put the entire ABP at risk, threatening the livelihoods of countless farmers and the nation's food security.

The DSS's allegations are part of a counter-affidavit in response to a lawsuit filed by
Ansar Technology Nigeria Ltd and its management.

PoliticsOn The Gang-up Against Bello Mattawale By Gov. Dauda Lawal And His Cohorts by Newsextra014(op): 3:25am On Sep 30, 2024
By Joseph Akinola

From the time that Bello Matawalle was nominated as Minister OF the Federal Republic of Nigeria in 2023, Dauda Lawal the Governor of Zamfara State has been ill at ease.

The circumstances of his victory at the gubernatorial election as well as subsequent victory at the Election petition Tribunal did not give room for sound sleep. He knew that when pushing comes to shoving, the former Governor held the aces in the State politically.
Dauda Lawal having realised that it would be difficult to keep Matawalle’s new influence under check as Minister of State for Defence hatched another plan after his first moves to indict him through the cargo Airport controversy. This was to hoodwink a former aides to Matawalle who could provide information on his activities while in government.

This was what led to the unveiling of Bashir Hadejia, who we will dwell on later in the write-up.

The original plan was to paint Bello Matawalle black over his achievements as Governor of Zamfara between 2019 and 2023. This however failed flat as the people of the state knew the legacies he left. And so they were not buying into that. After failing to achieve this, Dauda Lawal Dare thought out other plans.

Our sources believe that the Zamfara Governor connected with the former Jigawa Governor who is presently the Minister of Defence and both of them agreed that it was in their interests to cut Matawalle to size because of his looming influence and good relationship with President Bola Tinubu.

They found a willing tool in Jackson Ude, a former presidential aide to Jonathan. Jackson Ude is a Nigerian journalist who has made a name for himself as a blackmailer. Not less than twenty different top Nigerians, including the DG of World Trade Organization, Ngozi Okonjo Iweala have either taken him to court and won or sued him.

Jackson Ude has since become a major ally of Zamfara Governor, Dauda Lawal. Together, they allegedly decided that the best way to tackle Matawalle growing influence in the Tinubu government was to continue to label him as backing the bandits and terrorists terrorizing the State he once governed.
Bello Matawalle’s rise in status and having become the poster boy of the Tinubu administration’s success in the Defence sector did not make his co-minister, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar comfortable. What you don’t have, you cannot give.

Many sources in the media confirmed that the two Ministers seemed to be opposites hence it was only a matter of time that their differences became obvious. According to our sources, while Matawalle would come to state what the Ministry was doing and encourage the troops and it’s leadership to do more, Badaru has never been a man who wanted visibility. He has always been too taciturn and withdrawn, as if sulking. So when the story came out that he was not too happy with the Minister of State for taking the shine off him, and aligning with Dauda Lawal to undermine Matawalle, not many people doubted it.

Sources claimed Badaru has grouses, with Tinubu appointing him as Defence Minister and not putting the Chiefs of Staff under him. It was also alleged that he was angry with the president because he wanted the FCT Ministry portfolio, which was given to Nyesom WIKE, a non- partyman. Abubakar Badaru, according to our sources felt he should have been given the portfolio of the FCT Ministry because he dropped his presidential ambition to support Tinubu when the President indicated interest in contesting.

Our source further revealed that Badaru, and Governor Lawal have teamed up to work and ensure that Matawalle is frustrated out of the Tinubu government so as to further dent whatever achievements the Tinubu government can claim to have while also denting Matawalle’s achievements.

Governor Lawal’s romance with terrorists is well known in the State despite all the air of arrogance he surrounds himself with as several pictures of his meetings and discussion abound everywhere on the social media.Impeccable sources gathered that Bello Turji works for the Zamfara Governor and the friends and allies of the bandits leader know this.

Sources confided in us that this is why it has been impossible for Bello Turji to be captured or killed as the State government virtually protects him, leaks information about troops movement if they have them and also support them with logistics. This explains why he makes so much noise and boasts of his invincibility.

Bello Turji’s MEN and other bandit leaders are also said to enjoy the same status as he enjoys.

Our sources also confirmed that Turji and a few other top bandits work for Dauda Lawal by ensuring his firm grip on the mining business in Zamfara.

Through them, the governor is alleged to have controlled a large chunk of the mining fields and also collected royalties on the governor’s behalf.

It is even alleged in some circles that some of the late bandits leaders eliminated by the military in its recent onslaught were bagkeepers for the governor who kept his money especially from the mines hence the reason why he was not too happy with their death and their elimination was not celebrated by the state.
Our sources also linked a powerful former NSA from the state with the gold mining business in the state.

According to the sources, because of their vested interest, the powerful NSA who retired from the military as a general would do anything to ensure that his mining interests are protected in Zamfara hence the move to support the Governor and ensure that the top bandits who protect their vested interests are not touched. These gang-up believe that any attempt by Matawalle to upset the applecart in the mining sectors of the state will affect their vested interests since it is the bandits who are protecting their interests there and they need the continued presence of the bandits to ward off government prying eyes.

The implications of all these are germane here.
Key stakeholders in Zamfara state who ordinarily should be working for the success of the military are working at cross-purposes with the security apparatus of the state.

They are not ready to allow the security agencies operate. Rather, they work against them. They not only do this, they give out information against the security agencies to bandits and terrorists who through this organise ambushes for the security agencies all ina bid to paint the Minister of State Defence in bad light as well as maintain their strangle hold on the mining sector in the state.

Frightening Dimensions
The recruitment of Bashir Hadejia as well as the Minister of Defence, Abubakar Badaru, into this dastardly group constitutes a frightening dimensions to a problem that was hitherto localized. Our sources revealed that Bashir Hadejia was born in Niger Republic and maintains a home there just like the Defence Minister Abubakar Badaru.

Having worked with Bello Matawalle, he understands the workings of the former Governor’s network as well as what he did to curb the excesses of the bandits while in power.

That Bashir Hadejia, working with Governor Dauda Lawal were able to cladenstinely sponsor anti- Nigerian protests during the August 1-10 protests in Nigeria signify the extent of their hatred for the country and its constitued authority. Though they set out to embarrass the Minister of State for Defence, and by implications the Tinubu government, the move showed the extent the Dauda Lawal gang-up could go in portraying Matawalle in bad light and their cause.

Having recruited a notorious journalist who does not operate in the country, yet spews outright lies and also thrive on blackmail, no wonder they have dominated the cyber space with unverifiable stories upon stories against the Minister of State, Bello Matawalle.

BusinessMoney Transfer Levy: Opay To Charge Customers N2bn Daily, N60bn Monthly by Newsextra014(op): 9:22am On Sep 08, 2024
A Fintech bank, OPay is set to charge N50 Electronic Money Transfer Levy (EMTL) from every inflow of N10,000 and above received by their customers starting from September 9.

www.newsextra.com.ng learnt, translates to about N2billion daily, considering its about 40million customers nationwide made a minimum transaction of at least N10,000 daily. In a month, however, this translates to N60billion, according to check.

While this is regarded as additional burden on Nigerians who prefer fintech banks because of their pocket friendly charges, the new deduction introduced will further pinch its customers who are seemingly caught unaware about the development, as it will eat into their profits, especially, for those who does big ticket transactions with Opay.

Although, the money is expected to be handled over to the federal government through the the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), customers are embittered about the development that equally affects Moniepoint, and others fintech banks operating on the shores of the country.

Yesterday, however, OPay said to its customers that the deduction is for EMTL as directed by the federal government, adding that, “Please be informed that starting September 9th, 2024, a one-time fee of N50 will be applied to electronic transfers of N10,000 and above paid into your personal or business account in compliance with the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) regulations.

“It is important to note that OPay does not benefit from this charge in any way as it is directed entirely to the Federal Government.”

Nairaland GeneralShakirat Ayobami Denies Baseless Allegations By Detractors by Newsextra014(op): 8:40am On Sep 06, 2024
Dr Shakirat Kareem Ayobami, Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer of Whiterose Group, has rebuked the coordinated effort by her detractors to spread false allegations against her through the media. She emphasized that the allegations are baseless and part of a deliberate strategy by her competitors to tarnish the reputable image of the property brand she has diligently built over the years.

Addressing the recent misinformation against her, Dr Shakira stated that the allegations stem from envy, hate, and resentment from individuals threatened by her success in business. Despite facing unfair attacks in the media, she remains steadfast in her commitment to the real estate sector. “Ordinarily, i would have ignored the attention-seeking cheap blackmailers because they could not support their baseless allegations with any shred of evidence; however, for the sake of my concerned friends, numerous clients, and benefactors, i needed to put out a rebuttal as I believe the negative press will only serve to strengthen my resolve and make me a better person.” She said.

She also emphasized that the recent media scrutiny may be a result of biased elements using the media to undermine her achievements as a successful woman in a predominantly male-driven industry in Nigeria.

The philanthropist known for her innovative design work in reshaping the Lagos skyline with luxurious condominiums and other impressive buildings dismissed the allegations made on certain sponsored blogs and social media platforms. She emphasized that the claims are unfounded and do not reflect her reputable standing as a respected businesswoman with years of experience and a track record of serving top clients with a commitment to excellence.

She also expresses her disappointment at the sponsors of the fake news, whom she believed should have made it an issues-based argument rather than resorting to name-calling and cheap blackmail. In the purported falsehood being spread around by some faceless bloggers, it was alleged that the light-skinned business coach was allegedly involved in some fraudulent dealings but contrary to the claim, she said; “since my foray into the real estate business, I has never been caught in the web of fraud or engage in fraudulent activities. I always come clean.”

She further disclosed that her company was built on key elements like; fidelity, consistency, quality, eye for detail, relationship-oriented, hard work and truthfulness.

She also said most of her clients are referral-based as she ensures customer experience and satisfaction which has kept her brand a formidable one with numerous projects to its growing portfolio. In other to prove her innocence of the said allegations, She has challenged anyone with substantial proof of defrauding to come forward and present it as she is ready to face the full wrath of the law if she is found culpable. “I vehemently disassociate myself from other allegations which include; land-grabbing, assassination attempts, blackmail and others noted in the sponsored syndicated press statement. I know nothing about them. It’s just a way to bring me down and I will not give in to that.”

She has also called on stakeholders within the pen-pushing profession on proper regulation of the media space as many who hide under the guise of ‘free speech‘ have constantly pushed hateful and disparaging statements of no fact for clickbait to malign her. “What they are doing is against the ethics of journalism as a profession. The profession gives opportunity for fair hearing and a balanced story reportage rather than resorting to blackmails using media platforms to peddle misinformation.” “To clear my name off the series of allegations and falsehoods being peddled against me by my detractors, I have ordered my legal team to seek legal redress and do anything within the ambit of the law to hold anyone culpable of defamation and cyberbullying face the wrath of the law.” She revealed.

Dr Shakirat has disclosed that she is a law-abiding Nigerian and a practising Muslim with a business conglomerate currently employing over three thousand direct and indirect workers. She also said she will do everything to protect her brand jealously and won't condone anyone hiding under any guise to peddle misinformation about her and her brand by sabotaging her hard work as she is ready to go head-on with anyone culpable in line with the cybercrime section of Nigerian law to further prove her innocence.

PoliticsEmiolu Ruling House Urges Governor Makinde To Address Iresa Adu Kingship Vacuum by Newsextra014(op): 1:29pm On Sep 04, 2024
The emiolu ruling house of Iresa Adu kingdom in Oyo State is urgently calling on Governor Seyi Makinde to address the issue of kingship in their town. Following the passing of the last king of Iresa Adu in Surulere, Oyo State, there has been a vacuum in leadership that has yet to be filled.

Pa Julius Olaonipekun, the head of the Emiolu ruling house, has expressed concern over the lack of a king on the throne, stating that it is vital for the stability and development of the town to have a traditional ruler in place. According to the structure of the town, Emiolu should be given the title of king, but this has not happened as of yet.

This absence of leadership is not only a concern for the people of Iresa Adu but also for the overall governance and administration of the kingdom. The elder has urged Governor Seyi Makinde to take urgent steps to address this issue and ensure that the kingship in Iresa Adu is filled without further delay.

CrimeAgain, Opay Leaves 40 Million Customers Stranded Over Failed Transactions by Newsextra014(op): 12:06pm On Sep 03, 2024
Popular financial technology company, Opay has once again rendered its over 40 Million customer base stranded due to an unexplained application glitch, barely a month after customers complained of their funds disappearing into thin air.

Several customers were embarrassed on Monday when their attempt to perform transactions failed repeatedly without any form of solution and explanation from the fintech company which prides itself as a company that gives freedom to make quick and easy payments.

Unfortunately, the company’s reputation to provide quick and easy payments proved otherwise following the inability of customers to make and receive payments. Some had to rely on other fintech apps like Moniepoint and Palmpay to execute their transactions.

‘’I went to bokku mart to purchase some goods and because I don’t have an ATM, I use my Opay always because it’s always been easy but I was embarrassed yesterday when the payment failed. I didn’t even see my transaction history but my account was debited. It was like disappearance of money’’, said a frustrated customer.

Another customer explained that his transactions were on pending for several hours when he tried to make payments after purchasing food items for his baby.

‘’My baby’s food finished and I thought of buying some at the supermarket on my way from work. I got there, picked what I wanted and proceeded to make payment but my transactions were pending. I initially thought it was network so I changed the line I was using for data. It was the same thing, I had to leave there to my house to get my ATM so that my baby will not starve.’’

It would be recalled that one month ago, customers experienced similar situation with Opay.
