Lagos State Government has promised to ensure that disabled persons in the State enjoy meaningful life through continuous exploration of available avenues in making life more habitable and convenient for People With Disabilities (PWDs). https://i1.wp.com/www.barbaric.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/13872990_1165362836818314_6205518044189978235_n.jpg The Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of Youth and Social Development, Mr. Hakeem Muri-Okunola, sought the cooperation of all members of the public in achieving a Lagos free of discrimination against these set of individuals in their quest to access public facilities and use public transportation. Muri-Okunola who disclosed this today at a stakeholders meeting with officials of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) of government in the transportation sector and other stakeholders at Alausa Ikeja, added that the State government had been engaging relevant stakeholders in a bid to further give meaningful life to PWDs and will continue to engage others whose actions would impact the lives of these category of people. According to him, one of the ultimate intentions of government is to reduce or totally put an end to the rate at which PWDs depend on family members for assistance all the time. “The benefits of making mobility easier and more comfortable and accessible for PWDs are immense. For instance, there is hardly any family in Nigeria that does not have at least one PWD member and if such member is not able to move about easily, he becomes dependent on other members for his livelihood, and this can be a burden on individuals” he said. The Permanent Secretary also explained that “it is government’s sincere belief that, if accorded all the rights and privileges with an enabling environment, PWDs can be highly resourceful”. The General Manager of LASODA, Dr. Babatunde Awelenje who also addressed participants at the event said that the essence of the gathering was borne out of government’s quest to integrate PWDs into the society regardless of the forms of their disabilities. He said government has observed that one of the major challenges confronting PWDs is accessibility to public transportation and that is why government has taken it upon itself to continuously sensitize relevant stakeholders. ‘In addressing this situation, the buy-in of private individuals and bodies like the NURTW is very important’ he added. Giving an insight to the State Special Peoples’ Law, Barrister Bolarinwa Salami, a Legal Officer with the Ministry of Justice said that a section of the Law states that operators of public vehicles should always assign seats at convenient places to PWDs, stressing that right to public transportation remains an integral aspect of the Law. He therefore urged members of the society to accord preferences to PWDs especially during emergency situations and in public places. ‘In implementing some aspects of the Law, the State Government has taken the first step that should be emulated by all. In all government owned vehicles especially BRT and LAGBUS buses, reserved seats are usually provided for PWDs in addition to reserved parking spaces in all government owned institutions. In his closing comments, Salami said ‘provision of public facilities now has consideration for the needs of the PWDs always. I urge commercial bus operators and the general public to follow this example’. Source>>http://www.barbaric.com.ng/lasg-improve-living-conditions-people-disability/ |
The UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has rolled out a number of measures, including technical assistance, capacity building and the revision of the country’s Tourism Master Plan, as part of efforts to ensure the development of tourism in the country. https://i1.wp.com/www.barbaric.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/13669224_1184579031595003_7896829807923977234_n.jpg The UN Agency announced the measures, which also include the organization of international conferences in Nigeria and the certification of tourism courses, at the end of a two-day meeting between the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, and the global tourism agency in Madrid, Spain, on Wednesday. At the meeting, held at the headquarters of the UNWTO, Nigeria also expressed interest in hosting the 60th meeting of the global Agency’s Commission for Africa in 2018 in order to attract global attention to tourism in the country. In addition, the global agency is widening access to its e-library for Nigerian tourism officials and offering support for relevant tourism institutions and agencies in Nigeria. Under the UNWTO’s technical assistance programme, Nigeria will be assisted in the area of data collection for the elaboration of tourism statistics, rural tourism development, hotel classification and in designing programmes to create awareness for tourism. In the area of capacity building, the focus will be on the empowerment of women in tourism through the centres being planned for the six geo-political zones and the training of festival managers, among others. UNWTO Secretary-General Taleb Rifai, who led the agency’s strong delegation to the meeting, said the implementation of the programmes would start immediately and continue for the next two years. He commended the Minister for his ”great intelligence and big vision” for tourism in Nigeria, adding that the ”good chemistry” between him and the Minister must be used for the good of Nigeria. For his part, the Minister, who led the Nigerian delegation to the meeting, described it as ”most useful” and beneficial to the country. ”I want to express the appreciation of the Government and people of Nigeria to the UNWTO for their support. You have been passionate in your collaboration and you have helped us in more ways than we could imagine,” Alhaji Mohammed said. The meeting, which marked the return of Nigeria to the centre stage of the organization it joined in 1975, was held at the instance of the UNWTO Secretary-General, who invited the Minister to the Agency’s headquarters after the two met at the 58th UNWTO CAF Meeting in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire, last April. In the light of the dwindling economy in the country, the National Orientation Agency (NOA) has called on Nigerians, irrespective of religious and political affiliations, to be resilient, adding that other countries of the world have gone through similar challenges in their national development process. https://i0.wp.com/www.barbaric.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/National-Orientation-Agency-1.jpg This was stated in a press release made available to the media by the Deputy Director (Press), of the agency, Fidel Agu on Tuesday in Abuja. Director General of NOA, Garba Abari made this call when he paid a courtesy visit on the Managing Editor, News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja. Abari noted that there was a high level of mistrust between the citizenry and the government which needs to be addressed through proper information management, hence his desire for collaboration between the two Agencies to foster national re-orientation, patriotism and unity amongst Nigerians. He described the role of information dissemination as key in nation building, adding that NOA and NAN must mobilize opinions and characters towards changing the ugly narratives confronting Nigeria. The DG NOA said “With the dwindling economy which constitutes greater challenge to meeting national obligations, there is need to tell Nigerians what is responsible for the challenges so that we can begin to assess ourselves and ask questions on how we missed it as a nation”. Assuring Nigerians of better days ahead, Abari said no society is immune from turbulence and challenges, but admonished that we must work together to get to the promised land and build a country that we will proudly bequeath to our children. In his remarks, the Managing Director of NAN, Bayo Onanuga, said there was a disconnect between what our values as a nation used to be and what we see now, noting that we must be united and capitalize on our diversity to mobilize for national development. Onanuga described corruption as the canker worm that has eaten deep into the fabric of our nation, calling on citizens to sensitize, mobilize and support the government in the fight against corruption which he said, is of utmost importance for national development. Lagos State Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode on Tuesday embarked on extensive inspection of on-going projects across the State, where he equally flagged off the world class Epe-Marina Lagoon reclamation project aimed at giving a quantum leap to the tourism potentials of the State. https://i0.wp.com/www.barbaric.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/13680686_1164770656877532_3696869863506441781_n.jpg Governor Ambode, who was accompanied on the inspection tour by top government functionaries, said the lagoon reclamation projects in Epe and Badagry, upon completion, would look like that of Dubai in United Arab Emirates (UAE). He assured that the Badagry-Marina Lagoon reclamation project would be completed by the end of August, this year. The Epe-Marina Lagoon reclamation project is a complete redevelopment of project site to facilitate development of the area and promote tourism. The project comes with sand filling to the lagoon up to about 200 meters and dualization of the network of roads in the axis with functional walkways. Speaking on why the Epe-Marina and Badagry-Marina projects were embarked upon simultaneously by the State Government, Governor Ambode said: “We want to actually duplicate what you see in Dubai-Marina. This is a whole stretch of two kilometers of real estate and new tourist centres that we are putting in Epe and Badagry at the same time. “We believe strongly that coming out from our retreat that we said we are going to grow the IGR of Lagos State by 2017 to N30billion and 2018 to N50billion, we believe that some of these projects that we are commencing now are just inlets to our dream of growing the IGR. “We know that by the time we are expanding tourism potentials of Badagry and Epe at the same time, we will be able to get new investors that will be able to come to our new locations to do other things beyond what you see about recreation, tourism or entertainment and then get a whole lot of investments into Lagos State. This is part of our dreams and dreams do come true. “We are looking at the future of tourism from both axis. You cannot put tourism in those places without doing the infrastructure that is required to allow people to come in and that is why we are also doing the road network,” the Governor said. Governor Ambode, who equally inspected the on-going dualization of about 25 network of roads in Epe, said the massive investment of government in the area was part of the grand plan to transform the axis and same was in line with the Lekki Free Trade Zone (LFTZ) project. He expressed satisfaction with the level and pace of work done so far, saying that the quality was of international standard. He also expressed optimism that the projects, upon completion, would decongest the heartland of Lagos as people would be encouraged to move to Epe and Ibeju-Lekki axis. Speaking to journalists at the project sites, Governor Ambode said: “We believe with this expansion, the whole lot of what we are trying to do in Epe and Ibeju-Lekki axis will be developed. “We are inspired to see how we can look at the phase two of this project as quickly as possible. This road dualization is expected to be completed in 16 months but because we are ahead of schedule, we are looking at the first quarter of next year. “With this, we have just injected 30 kilometers of standard roads into Epe and the meaning of that is of course changing the economy of Epe Township, real estate will be boomed and we are encouraging commerce and industrialization. “This project is the backbone of the Lekki Free Trade Zone, Deep Seaport and the proposed Airport. All the State Government is doing is stimulating the economy and that is what is happening here,” he said. Governor Ambode also inspected the VIP Chalets in Epe where he disclosed that government will expand the housing scheme in the area and carry out perimeter fencing of the project site. Earlier, Governor Ambode and his team inspected the Adeniji Adele transport interchange outward Third Mainland Bridge, where he ordered massive enforcement against illegal dropping and picking of passengers at undesignated bus stops. This, the Governor said, would enhance ease of vehicular movement around that axis and drastically reduce traffic on the Third Mainland Bridge inward Obalende and Lagos Island. The Governor also inspected the on-going rehabilitation and upgrading of Freedom Road and Admiralty Way in Lekki, as well as the on-going bridge being constructed at Ajah Roundabout. He, however, urged the people to continue to pay their taxes so that government would continue to provide the needed infrastructures. He said: “I think in the last 14 months, we have been able to show Lagosians that we can actually appropriate the taxes that they paid judiciously and then allocate it to the different sectors that really have meaning and impact to the ordinary Lagosians. “The more they see what we are doing, the more inspired tax payers should be to perform their civic obligations and when they pay their taxes, our commitment remains the same, we will use these taxes judiciously and also expand the growth and economy of Lagos so that life becomes safer, cleaner and then more prosperous for all Lagosians,” he said. President Muhammadu Buhari Monday in Abuja said his administration will pay keen interest to accountability and transparency to fast-track football development in the country. https://i0.wp.com/www.barbaric.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/13631671_501451316712269_4935753577348972926_n.jpg Receiving the FIFA President, Gianni Infantino, and the Secretary-General, Fatma Samuora, at State House, President Buhari challenged football administrators to fashion out strategic programmes to develop the game. Congratulating the duo on their election, particularly Samuora, the first African and female to be elected FIFA Secretary-General, President Buhari welcomed Infantino’s programme to reform the world game through transparency, anti-corruption and good governance. The President pledged Nigeria’s support to FIFA president’s reform agenda, noting that they were similar to those his presidency had outlined to resuscitate Nigeria. “Majority of Nigerians are married to football. In the rural areas, when there is no electricity and there is a game to watch, Nigerians go to the extent of renting small generators, popularly known as ‘I better-pass-my neighbour’ to watch the game. “We will take the development of football very seriously and I encourage the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to behave itself and organise effective competitions for the good of the game,” he said. “Accountability is serious business and I welcome you (Infantino) into the club of accountable Chief Executive Officers,” the President said. In his remarks, Infantino asked the Nigerian authorities to pay attention to infrastructure and find a lasting solution to the problem of violence and insecurity at match venues. “I foresee Nigeria as a bedrock for the development of the game in Africa, however, infrastructure, stability and security are needed to make this happen,” he said. The FIFA officials were accompanied by the Minister of Youth and Sports, Barr. Solomon Dalung, NFF President, Amaju Pinnick and President, Nigeria Olympic Committee, Engr. Habu Gumel. As the date for the 30th July re-run State and National Assemblies elections draw closer, the Rivers State Deputy Governor, Dr. (Mrs) Ipalibo Harry-Banigo has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC to be proactive in its preparation to avert some of the pitfall of the previous re-run elections in the State. https://i0.wp.com/www.barbaric.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/INEC-box.jpg In a statement through her Press Secretary, Paul Damgbor, the Deputy Governor said the call became necessary to avert a repeat of another re-run election in the State. She said it is sad that Rivers State is not being represented in some constituencies at both the State and National Assemblies and wondered who stands to benefit from such anormality. The Deputy Governor said INEC must resist any act of partisanship and mobilise electoral materials, personnel timely and transparently, and take full responsibility for the smooth conduct of a free, fair and credible election. Dr. Banigo stated that INEC should be in a better position to put all necessary logistic arrangement in place rather than looking for excuses insisting that the State Government is committed to playing its role in the re-run exercise. She advised the Commission not to be intimidated by the antics and utterances of some politicians whose desperation is to occupy political offices through the backdoor, contending that politics should not be seen as a do or die affair. The Deputy Governor stressed the need for INEC to maintain its neutrality in the electoral process to build confidence in the people so as to safe our democratic process. She also advised civil society and international observers to effectively participate in the monitoring of the Saturday’s re-run. At least 18 people have lost their lives and 23 others sustained injuries in a powerful explosion in a town in Iraq’s eastern province of Diyala near the border with Iran. https://i0.wp.com/www.barbaric.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/439e8f4f-fcce-4859-af7b-55783070f42b.jpg Security sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the bomb attack took place in the town of al-Khalis, located roughly 15 kilometers (9 miles) northwest of the provincial capital city of Baqubah, on Monday morning. The head of the Provincial Council, Omar Maan al-Korawi, said a car rigged with explosives was detonated near the entrance to the Department of Agriculture in the town. No individual or militant group has claimed responsibility for the act of violence, yet. The development came only a day after a bomber attacked a security checkpoint in the Shia-majority district of Kadhimiyah, north of the capital, Baghdad, killing at least 10 civilians and four policemen. A police officer said at least 31 people were also wounded in the attack. Latest figures released by the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq show a total of 662 Iraqis were killed and 1,457 others injured in acts of terrorism, violence and armed conflict in June. According to the UN mission, the number of civilian fatalities stood at 382. Violence also claimed the lives of 280 members of the Iraqi security forces in that month. A great portion of the fatalities was recorded in Baghdad, where 236 civilians were killed. The northern and western parts of Iraq have been plagued by gruesome violence ever since Daesh terrorists launched a campaign of terror in the country in June 2014. Iraqi government forces, backed by fighters from allied Popular Mobilization units, have been pushing the militants out of the country’s territory. The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has stressed the need for a robust partnership between the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) that could help build the capacity of FRCN staff and enhance their efficiency. https://i1.wp.com/www.barbaric.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/13776032_1180920401960866_1172273895207634688_n.jpg Speaking during a visit to the BBC headquarters in London on Friday, the Minister said the kind of capacity building he is advocating must be ”inclusive”, leading to a change in the orientation of the FRCN staff. ”An authentic programme that is suitable for our (FRCN) operation must be developed,” he said, noting especially the need for a leadership re-orientation for news media gatekeepers in the corporation. Alhaji Mohammed also urged the BBC to be ”more positive about your coverage” and to hear all the sides, including that of the government, instead of hearing just one side. In his comments, BBC’s Director of News and Current Affairs, James Harding, suggested a gathering of the Editorial leadership of both the BBC and the FRCN to explore possible areas of cooperation between the two. Earlier, the Director-General of the FRCN, Mr. Mansur Liman, who accompanied the Minister to the BBC headquarters, had said the Corporation required training for its staff, especially journalistic training, as well as technology upgrade. During the visit, the Minister and his delegation were taken on a guided tour of the sprawling BBC headquarters, called the New Broadcasting House, by Steve Martins, BBC’s Business Development Manager He also held several meetings with the African Service, BBC Media Action, a charity that harnesses the media to help people live better lives; and the Editorial Policy Director, David Jordan, among others. In view of agitation by various interests in the country over petroleum resources and how they are being managed, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt Hon Yakubu Dogara, has stated that the National Assembly will engage with stakeholders on contentious issues as it begins work on the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB). https://i2.wp.com/www.barbaric.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/pib5.jpg Speaking during the National Stakeholders Summit on Petroleum Industry Reforms organised by the House Committees on Petroleum in Abuja, the Speaker said the legislature is determined to draft a law for the industry that will be in the best interest of Nigerian. He said, “The need to make consensus and lend a voice to long suppressed agitations in the drafting and consideration of petroleum industry bills informed our decision to organise this stakeholders summit. We are optimistic that this approach will provide the crucial platform to enable us cross pollinate ideas and ventilate our positions on certain contentious issues, regardless how vexed they may be. You can rest assured that our work at the National Assembly is to do your good intention.” https://i0.wp.com/www.barbaric.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/pib4.jpg https://i1.wp.com/www.barbaric.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/pib3.jpg “We are not unaware of the several failed attempts at redeeming the petroleum industry by our predecessors. The Petroleum Industry Bill has been down a long, tortuous, and chequered road. Most of us have been co-travelers on the journey to pass the bill into law, and have the requisite experience to avoid any pitfalls ahead, hence this resolve to seek proper consultations with you and build confidence amongst us.” Lamenting that the poor management of the petroluem industry has left much to be desired with only a few elite Nigerians benefitting from it, Dogara assured that all these issues will be addressed during the summit. The speaker noted, “Nigeria is one of the richest petroleum regions of the world. Paradoxically, it has never been able to maximize effectively its immense oil and gas potentials and the revenue accruing from it. The downstream operates in a state of almost continuous malfunction, and for years has been characterised by comatose refineries and an inefficient downstream. It operates under an inadequate legal framework, with an inefficient and poorly maintained pipeline network and depot system. The result is that Nigeria is both one of the world’s largest producers of crude oil, and one of the world’s leading importers of petroleum products, a dependency that has enriched the elite at the expense of the increasingly impoverished masses. https://i2.wp.com/www.barbaric.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/pib1.jpg “The downstream runs on a system of subsidies until recently and uniform pricing which has proved ineffective, in addition to being administered in a very opaque way. Shortages and inadequate supply have characterized the Nigerian downstream for over two decades and can be described as an example of system failure. “The upstream has not fared better either. Pipeline vandalism, large-scale environmental degradation, and the world’s highest levels of crude oil theft have been constants for several years. Decades after the advent of Nigeria’s petroleum industry, problems which led to host community agitation remain unaddressed and highly politicized, and the question of the extent to which revenues from the industry should be shared among the three tiers of government and the people remain, as do the content and limits of corporate social responsibility. These are all crucial issues that should be addressed to guarantee and ensure a stable polity in Nigeria. “These examples represent just a few of the present problems of Nigeria’s petroleum industry, and are reflective of an industry that is in critical need of total restructuring, which can only be commenced through the enactment of laws that provide the legal framework that will promote the emergence of an optimal petroleum industry.” Lamenting that over the years, Nigeria has performed much worse than sub-Saharan Africa as a whole and much worse than other regions of the developing world in terms of human development indicators, to the extent that it is regarded as a foster child for ‘how not to run a petroleum industry, Dogara assured that the National Assembly will enact good laws for the industry. “A defective or inadequate legislation is akin to building a house on a shaky foundation with the expectation that it will stand nonetheless. We cannot afford to continue with such faulty expectations,” he stated. Source>>http://www.barbaric.com.ng/wont-untouchable-areas-pib-dogara/ |

We are not entering the American market with empty hands,” Rosatom CEO Sergey Kirienko has been quoted as saying by Russia Today. Kirienko added that Rosatom is working in collaboration with GE-Hitachi, adding that a contract has already been signed to send a pilot batch of Russian nuclear fuel to the US. According to Kirienko, Rosatom sees the importance of the alliance and will provide all the necessary technical details to successfully complete the licensing process with the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission, RT added. The report emphasizes that Russia and the US have agreed to create a joint company to promote Russian nuclear fuel at US nuclear power plants. The fuel assemblies will be produced at the plant in Wilmington, North Carolina, it added. In May, Rosatom said it plans to enter the US nuclear fuel market by 2020 and have 10 percent market share. Russia has a 17 percent share in the global market of nuclear fuel. It fully covers the needs of Russian reactors and also works in 14 other countries, including Finland, Bulgaria, Hungary, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Ukraine, Armenia and China. The value of Russia’s annual nuclear fuel exports exceeds $1 billion, RT concluded. Source>>http://www.barbaric.com.ng/russia-sell-nuclear-fuel-us/ |
The much talked about ATM fraudsters are not resting on the oars. They are all over the place laying siege to any susceptible victim. These criminals go about fleecing unwary members of the public with their ingenious, ever-changing modes of operations. The latest being the infamous identity theft. https://i1.wp.com/www.barbaric.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/13781708_1145931068762715_1340120373385583129_n.jpg Before now, cloning and PIN harvesting through electronic chips cleverly concealed in the Automated Teller Machine (ATM), was the universal mode. Over time, the tricks and decoys to entrap their victims keep changing and have assumed a disturbing dimension. The Ibadan Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is on the trail of a suspected ATM fraudster, who goes by the name Akinade Tofunmi. Her trade in stock is identity theft. Her duty post is any ATM Point and Point of Sales (POS) machines across the country. However, she does not ‘work’ during the official hours of the week rather; she operates late in the night when all bank transactions had closed and preferably over the weekend when her ‘prospective’ victims might not be able to alert the banks for any unauthorised transaction. In her last operation, within twenty four hours; this fraudster who operates with the identity of her victims succeeded to have raked in about three million (N3m) within 24 hours. Dateline was Friday, June 3rd, 2016, at about the close of work. A woman simply identified as Alhaja and her husband who was waiting in the car wanted to use an ATM somewhere in Ibadan, Oyo State, when Tofunmi noticed that the woman limps. Pretending to be polite and cultured, she offered to assist her with the transaction on the ATM. Unaware of the intention behind the pious approach, she gave the fraudster her ATM card and divulged her PIN. Smartly, the fraudster quickly checked the balance in the account which had one million, seven hundred and forty nine thousand, twenty six naira and seven kobo (N1, 749, 026. 07). After the intended withdrawal of N20, 000:00, the fraudster swapped the card and gave Alhaja a fake ATM card. Oblivious of the swap, she left with her husband. Shortly before midnight, the fraudster started the ‘harvest’ of her booty. She withdrew one hundred and thirty thousand naira. Having exceeded the daily withdrawing limit for that day, she waited for a few minutes to the following day which was a Saturday. Shortly after midnight, she made another rounds of withdrawals to the tune of one hundred and fifty thousand naira which was also the daily limit for that day. However, Alhaja and her husband had no one to run or call that night to save the situation when the debit alerts start coming in However, Alhaja and her husband had no one to run or call that night to save the situation when the debit alerts start coming in torrent. In a desperate need of where and how to empty the balance in the account, she went to a night club where she met a motorcycle transporter, popularly known as Okada whom she approached for a help. Her decoy was that she had enough money in her account but could not access it having exceeded her daily withdrawal limit. She showed the bike man her balance and pleaded with him to give her his ATM card, account details and PIN for a quick teller transfer from her (Alhaja’s) account to the bike man’s account. With that, she has been able to secure some of Alhaja’s money in the bike man’s account thereby stealing the identity of the unsuspecting bike man. At the early hours of that Saturday morning, she asked the bike man to take her to a hotel with an intention to further steal the identity of the hotelier for another movement of the money. At the hotel reception while paying for her accommodation which was N10, 000 (Ten thousand naira) for one night, she deliberated credited the hotel’s account with one hundred and one thousand At the hotel reception while paying for her accommodation which was N10, 000 (Ten thousand naira) for one night, she deliberated credited the hotel’s account with one hundred and one thousand naira (N101, 000) feigning a mistake and demanded a refund of ninety-one thousand naira (N91, 000) balance of an overpayment. This was also done with Alhaja’s ATM card through the POS machine at the Hotel. To further conceal her identity, she provided fake personal details in the hotel and gave the hotel the bike man’s account detail when the hotel management requested for an account to deposit the refund. All these happened on Saturday; hence, Alhaja and her husband are still in dilemma with no help in sight to stop the transactions in the account. By Sunday, Alhaja’s money had moved to the fraudster both in cash and through transfer to the bike man account domicile in the same bank. All these while, the fraudster was in possession of both Alhaja the first victim and the bike man, the second victim’s ATM cards. Later the following day, Monday, the bike man could no longer reach the fraudster on phone; he (the bike man) then went to the bank to request for another ATM card. It was later discovered in the bank that part of Alhaja’s money was transferred to the bike man’s account. He was arrested by the bank and He’s now helping the EFCC operatives to track down the fraudster. Investigations have revealed that this same fraudster had stolen the identities of other victims earlier and had absconded to, Ilorin, Kwara State. Instances of Tofunmi’s nefarious activities have also been spotted in other parts of the country particularly Port Harcourt City. The Commission is hereby seeking the cooperation and support of public spirited members of the society to please help unveil the identity of this fraudster. Her face, though with different disguises, is on display for anyone who knows her to please contact any of our offices across the six geopolitical zones and Abuja. She must be apprehended, who knows the next victim? Besides, it is imperative to reiterate the need to be careful with our ATM cards and PERSONAL IDENTIFICATION NUMBER (PIN). On no account should we divulge any information about our account details to anyone. The criminals, ATM fraudsters are on the loose, taking advantage of people’s insensitivity and carelessness. Mastercard’s familiar orange and red circles just got a facelift. The credit card company rolled out a minimalist new logo on Thursday — its first adjustment in two decades. https://i2.wp.com/www.barbaric.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Mastercard-Changes-Logo-For-Time-in-20-Years.png Instead of interlocking in the middle as they previously did, the two circles now blend into one another in a design that looks exactly like a Venn diagram. In addition to the simplified icon, the white drop-shadowed typeface that used to splay out across it has been lowercased and dropped below. The change, which was orchestrated by branding agency Pentagram, fits with what seems to be the vogue in corporate logo design right now — simple one-dimensional shapes and serif-free basic fonts that translate better in digital formats. Verizon, Ihop and Google have all moved in the same direction in the past year.
