One person said Chidi Odinkalu is a talkative. Another more disturbed fellow wrote: "It would seem the writer of this piece is on a personal vendetta against the school authorities going as far as advocating for a criminal enquiry. He proposes some kind of remedial measures without saying a word of what this should be. I doubt if this borehole was recently sunk. Why didn't the kids have these health problems before now? From all indications the school has been closed by the State Ministry of Health. Odinkalu is playing the role of a meddling interloper. His write up sheds no light. It brings only heat. Reports of water pollution and occasional ill health are not uncommon in schools and communities across Nigeria. This is not the first and certainly won't be the last irrespective of whatever measures are adopted. Should the govt declare a national emergency as requested? Then it should be prepared to do this every other month. This shows naivety and ignorance of how to conduct state business." I refuse to copy their IDs because I know the purpose of their ill-conceived comments is for cheap popularity. Imagine how many Nigerians would die if the kinds of individuals who made these comments get into Government. |

The situation at Queens College (QC), Yaba, Lagos is now a public health emergency and addressing this urgently must preoccupy the attention of the school, public health authorities and the school community. Pending independent certification of the school as safe for human activity, it should remain closed. Temporary, alternative arrangements should be made for preparation of students about to take their West African School Certificate (WASC) examinations. USOSA supports the advisory of the Lagos State Ministry of Health to postpone the planned re-opening of the school and is gratified that the new Management of QC has heeded this advice. Investigations ordered by public health authorities at federal and state levels have disclosed a mortifying state of affairs at QC. Since the beginning of January 2017, over 1,222 QC students have been treated at the school’s clinic for abdominal pain, fever, vomiting and diarrhoea. 16 students were admitted in various hospitals in the country, mostly in and around Lagos. Of this number, nine have reportedly been discharged; two have died, one is still in critical condition at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), having recently come out of coma. In the past 36 hours, another has been admitted into hospital. Independent laboratory analyses have shown that the water sources in the school are contaminated by different forms of E-Coli and Salmonella, among other dangerous pathogens. 23 of 40 kitchen workers and food handlers have tested positive for Amoebiasis; another three reported positive for Salmonella and at least one is positive for Tape-Worm. The analysis also indicates that the boreholes that provide principal sources of water for the school are too shallow and too close in proximity to the sewage systems, to which the contamination has been traced. Hyper-chlorination, the envisaged short term solution, cannot and does not provide water that is fit for use. An extensive de-contamination effort is needed. Despite clear evidence of a crisis, the Management of the school at the time failed to take appropriate steps to safeguard the children or call in assistance. Instead, they appeared bent on concealing the facts and denying reality. When parents cried out, the then Principal appeared around 23 February to blame the situation on “enemies of the school”, denying that “there is no epidemic, epidemic is when three-quarters of the population has died”. Around the same day, a Vice-Principal reportedly complained: “we are looking after 2,800 students and we are being crucified because two die”. From various levels of the Management of QC then, there was clear evidence of reckless disregard for the young lives in their care or worse. USOSA mourns and condoles with the bereaved families. No parent should have to reclaim the body of a child sent to school in a body bag. We are hopeful that the children currently hospitalised will make full recovery. We offer our support to the present Management in returning QC to its historic place in Nigeria and commend the deep and determined sense of responsibility so far shown by the Queens College Old Girls Association (QCOGA) during this crisis. The case for declaring a public health emergency in QC is very clear. Federal and State public health authorities should do so urgently and work together with the school authorities on an acceptable remedial plan, whose implementation should be independently verified. USOSA offers its networks to mobilise complementary support for this. Pending the implementation of such a plan, re-opening should be deferred. Consideration should be given also to suspending boarding facilities for the time being until an acceptable long term solution is found to the cause of this crisis. The duty of looking after children in a learning environment is a sacred trust. This public health crisis at QC calls attention to the responsibility of everyone, especially school managements and education administrators, to uphold this trust at all times. As a result of clear failures in this case, young lives have been lost; many more have been endangered. In addition to the remedial measures needed to address the on-going public health emergency, therefore, we believe that the gravity of the facts revealed warrant urgent and committed criminal investigations. Any persons found complicit or criminally negligent in bringing about this situation should be prosecuted and brought to account. This is the only way to ensure that this sad and tragic situation does not happen again. Chidi Anselm Odinkalu USOSA President-General

Some cultures may die, others may metamorphose, some would be totally relegated to “costumes” and others may never be remembered. Africa is filled with so many cultures, and different languages, skin tones, people and even meals. How does one take all of Africa and put it into something that can be easily appreciated by non-Africans and even promoted. Clothing is one of the only ways we can promote our culture, with little efforts we can have people who know nothing about us, learn so much from the colors and items we wear. The western influence is seen in most of our designs, but as much as we can we have incorporated some Afro-sense into all of our apparel. We believe that Africa is artistic, its very essence revolves around the arts, nature, the seaand sometimes even the soil. Our folktales are filled with mysterious characters that inspire imaginations to think beyond the present environment and into a different realm that exists outside of time. As designers, we constantly strive for authenticity, how can we achieve that with all that is around us. It’s by looking within though. And so we mixed the fabrics of the Kenyan Massai, with the Ghanaian motifs while pondering through the thoughts of the Calabari bride, the Benin chiefs and the Yoruba dress silohuettes. Our collection is a reflection of the Nigerian spirit. Highly westernized but deeply rooted in traditional beliefs. We considered the economy, the social climate the people’s concerns and we designed solely for our customers who are in touch with all of these and need a medium to express their feelings. How can a simple item of clothing inspire deep feelings and express true concerns for our society? All clothing were made in Nigeria by Nigerians, we have solved unemployment through training our designers locally, we have considered the economic situation by using a very strategic pricing system to create affordable pieces. Our need for recognition and class is seen in the cuts and embellishments on the clothing, one’s sense of eloquence is felt in the soft folds of the chosen fabrics, and finally our disposable income will not be threatened by any of these designs. We have made glamour and class affordable! Come to Mente De Moda sales tomorrow at noon in Lekki, to get authentic African fashion pieces at the best prices. That’s what fashion should be, a true reflection of an entire people through and through. When you can look a million bucks for twenty that’s the new elite. Bhai went to see Obama some weeks later, and Obama told him not to do it, that the USA, which owns the dollar, is going to do something to fix Nigeria''s FOREX crisis. That was how Baba forgot about the Naira-Yuan Swap Deal and kept waiting for Obama's help till Donald Trump arrived. Nigeria is not a serious country. Buhari that was alarmed that GEJ abandoned the unbelievable Rail Deal which China offered Nigeria, he too has abandoned the incredible Naira-Yuan Swap Deal. His successor will come on TV and be alarmed too, yet that one will still abandon the amazing deal China will offer Nigeria. All this, because America said so. Very soon, China could take that Yuan Swap Deal to Ghana, and we may end up going through Ghana to buy Yuan before heading to China for imports. Thereby also strengthenning the Cedi, and spending on flights and hotel in Ghana, boosting their GDP. Nigeria is not a serious country! |
I know Audu personally, and I like him as a businessman and a music mogul, but we have to avoid crime. Publishing false information which is capable of inciting the public into disorderliness, chaos, or violence is a crime, and must be punished. Celebrities and the rich aren't exempt. Audu is a lawyer, and he knows what he did was breaking the law. He later admitted this publicly while under no duress, he confessed and apologised. However, apologies do not wash away crime. I hope he gets the lightest sentence possible, preferably Community Service, but it'lll be virtually impossible for him to go scott free on the charge at hand. |

The Bank of Industry (BoI), First Bank Nigeria and Afterschool Graduate Development Centre (AGDC) have inaugurated a N500 million Youth Ignite programme towards creating five million jobs within five years. About The AGDC Youth Ignite program Mrs Funmi Adeyemi, Executive Director, AGDC, said at the occasion on Wednesday in Lagos that human resources were the biggest assets of Nigeria, while youth development was the stimulus required to drive its economic growth. According to her, the Youth Ignite programme seeks to create new jobs, facilitate finance, capacity development and advisory services for micro entrepreneurs. She said that the scheme was anchored on supporting one million entrepreneurs to create five million jobs, over the next five years. Entrepreneurs upon meeting the required criteria and judges review would have access to a “loan” value as required by their businesses capped at N200,000.00 (Two Hundred Thousand Naira) to start or grow their businesses. Successful businesses that are able to prove their concept (through the amount of jobs created, revenue generated, etc.) are then able to access the “scale up loan” up to the tune of Five Hundred Thousand Naira (N500,000.00) [img][/img] BOI And It’s Role In Youth Entrepreneurship Speaking at the launch which took place on Wednesday at the Marina office of BoI, the acting Managing Director, BoI, Mr. Waheed Olagunju, explained that the collaboration would propel the selected youths to greater accomplishments and empower them to become employers of labour. Olagunju pointed out that Nigerian youths are imaginative and highly talented, maintaining that the Development Finance Institution (DFI) would continue to support, build capacity and train youths while also making available single digit and highly concessional financing to support youths in Nigeria. “We have two bottom lines mainly which include financial viability and developmental impact and among developmental impact are job creation, import substitution and export generation which means we finance projects that can earn foreign exchange for Nigeria. “We are coming together to help the Nigerian youth leveraging our experience; we have been in this environment for more than 58 years, First Bank 123 years and AGDC almost a decade old,” Olagunju said. Ibukun Awosika And Her Vision For AGDC In her remarks, the Founder of, AGDC and Chairman of the Board of FBN, Mrs. Ibukun Awosika, noted that the initiative was providing the kind of environment young entrepreneurs needed to thrive, an advantage which the older generation did not have. “We need to think of growing businesses in the future, so our commitment to this initiative is first to support nation building, support transforming lives that is so critical to our nation; help build new generation of businesses that will be our customers in the future. “Until we have what is an all-inclusive development such that we are converting the mind and the strength of the large part of our population into value we cannot have real growth and this is what projects like this will do,” she said. The Executive Director, AGDC, Mrs. Funmi Adeyemi, said Nigeria has a rich human capital resource that can used as an advantage to drive economic growth, but stressed that a lot of youths have great ideas but no resources to drive their dreams and aspirations. Empowering one million Nigerian Youths To Create Five Million Jobs Through The Youth Ignite Program “Our long term goal is to empower one million youths who will create five million jobs in five years, if we all do our part, we will find that the cumulative effect of our contribution will change our country and move forward us towards our desire,” she said. She added that the Youth Ignite challenge was anchored on three pillars: Innovate, Transform and Lead. How To Apply To The AGDC Youth Ignite Program Interested Nigerian youths should log on to www.youthignite.ng or just go straight tohttp://www.youthignite.ng/apply.php and create your account by filling in the relevant details. Microenterprises will be provided training, single-digit interest loans and ongoing support during the course of five years. Entrepreneurs are required to do the either of following: Consider ways people conduct businesses in their state or community and devise a more effective way to achieve better results; or Develop a solution to a problem(s) in their community or area of influence; or Seek to command [more] business value from a skill they already possess or trade they are involved in. I want to convert my old pumping machine to a small wind turbine using the blades of an old fan. The coil of the pumping machine is burnt, so I'm going to take it to the local generator guy to see if he can recoil it to even generate as much electricity as possible. I'm also going to take the blades of the fan to a welder to weld them together on the axial rod. I'm not an engineer or anything. I'm just angry at Fashola, and I'm tired of complaining. If anyone has any suggestions, or contributions, you can call me on 08093403611. My plan is to build a Vertical Axis Wind Turbine because I learnt they can better utilise the lower wind speeds we have in most parts of Nigeria. Dear Team synergy , let me know how your work goes. |
Not bad at all, but there's room for improvement. |
Idrismusty97:Use Etisalat 4G LTE, and ye shalt be the First To Comment...so sayeth the Lord. |
Anchor84:Eiyah, kpele. I hope you find one just like it. It's a truly amazing product. The model is 42LB580V-TA. The picture clarity is so amazing that last December, when I was playing my X-Men BluRay discs for my friend who came from the UK, the actually could not stop commenting on the picture clarity. Also, the fact that it's a Satellite TV is very important because as Nigeria is getting close to Digital Broadcasting, most of our TV stations will soon shift from terrestial to satellite. Myself, I'm selling because I want to fix my car that's with my mechanic, and put it on Uber and Taxify, then get enough money to buy a 55 inch version of this same TV. Meanwhile, in case you're interested in a very clean Samsung 2HP Split Unit AC, I'm selling mine. Check out: https://www.nairaland.com/3628826/samsung-triangular-ac-fairly-used
