The Samsung Split Air Conditioner  2.0 hp (Triple Protector) AR18FCFSBWK, is striking and loaded with better cooling efficiency and durability. It can cool a very large space, ideally your parlour.

The TWO-STEP COOLING means immediately you switch it on, it rapidly cools to attain a desirable temperature, then it slows down to maintain that desired temperature.

Samsung's incorporated protection expertise poses superior durability and dependability.
Cools Faster, Farther, and Wider The Samsung Air Conditioner has been designed from the ground up to be outstandingly efficient. Its uniquely triangular design has a wider inlet, so more air can be drawn in.

This unit was bought brand new from Jumia in 2015, and has been rarely used. The original 2 year warranty on it will expire April 27th 2017. Bought brand new from Jumia, it is very clean, and almost like new.

The first and third image are actual photos of the AC, however, the carton has been thrown away now.

flyca:
If Nigerians know how inflated these projects are, they will weep for our lost future embarassed

Hello. Please I need ideas on how I can reach your state governor.

My company here in China can build wind turbine generators 75m high generate 50MW of Electricity with just N2bn (non inflated, not in dollars, in naira) through renewable wind energy. It is also costumizable to suit individual needs.

Renewable Energy is reliable, green, clean, does not require fueling and zero-emmission. [s]And if you don't understand 50MW can power Anambra and Enugu States, 247! I'm serious.[/s]

At the moment, we have projects in India, Spain, South America etc. And I will like to take some projects home too.

I'm a Nigerian, not affliated to any government or political party. I am tired of the way things are done! No body send me o, I'm just doing my part, in building the nation.

Modified: No jokes, please. Only serious minded people. And no, our smallest set is 50MW. Thanks.
Let's talk. If you can set up a sample unit to demonstrate what your turbine can do, I'm already talking with Lagos, Kwara, and Kebbi States, however, they are not willing to pay for what will not work here.

Note that the wind speeds in most Nigerian states is less than 10m/s.

Secondly, I'm particularly interested in fabricating and replicating the wind turbines here in Nigeria because the terrible exchange rate will make importation too expensive to make sense.

Thirdly, the type of wind turbines I believe will be best for Nigeria are the Vertical Axis Wind Turbines. They are smaller, and can be placed in the middle of major roads to power streetlights, and can also be easily used in homes and offices without consuming too much space, or looking too much out of place.

Finally, watch the video below to see what I think will be best to present to the Lagos State Government. If you can deliver something like this to Lagos (even if it is just the turbines), my team can set it up the bus stops, and sell it to Ambode.

Sports › Nigeria Professional Football League Continues Despite Legal Issues. by nex(op): 10:07am On Sep 03, 2016
Fixtures of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) will continue to hold as scheduled, according to a statement by the League Management Company (LMC) released on Friday. The LMC said it was among several other grounds, relying on the motion filed for stay of execution of Mr. Justice I.I Kunda’s latest order made in disregard of the notice of appeal filed against his first order.

https://i0.wp.com/www.barbaric.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/League-Management-Company-LMC-logo1.jpg

The League body also stated in addition to the stay of execution filed, it has also filed a notice of appeal against the order of the Plateau State High Court, Jos stopping matches of the NPFL until full compliance with the earlier interim order of the Court directing the reinstatement of Giwa FC to the League and rescheduling of matches for the club.

It also raised the question on how the Judge found an urgency in fact as required by law to make the first interim order ex-parte three months after Giwa FC was expelled from the League under the League Rules, for failing to play three consecutive matches.

Mr. Justice I.I. Kunda, the vacation judge of the Plateau State High Court, Jos division made the earlier order in a fundamental human right suit filed by an individual, a certain Mustapha Abubakar, who claims to be acting for himself and Giwa FC. Mustapha claims that the expulsion of Giwa FC had denied him the right to enjoy matches of the club after he bought season’s ticket. The said tickets were found to have been purchased even when the club was yet to be registered to participate in the Nigeria Professional Football League season, thereby violating provisions governing the league.

But the LMC’s position also is that the infinitesimal interest of the said Abubakar cannot override that of millions of fans of the other 19 NPFL Clubs, corporate partners of the League, the players and myriad other interests that are attached directly and tangential to the League.

“We cannot accept that these multifarious and incalculable interests can be held to ransom and subjected to the whim of an individual with no connection, whatsoever, with the operation of the League”, the LMC continued on why the league cannot be stopped.

The LMC said that this decision to continue with the fixtures is part of some urgent steps to preserve the integrity of the Nigeria Professional Football League and protect it from irreparable damage.

The League body expressed surprise that the Judge will make the orders even after it has been brought to the court’s notice through a written affidavit that Giwa FC has written the LMC stating categorically that it never mandated the plaintiff or anybody to sue on its behalf.

It continued, “This letter from Giwa FC is a restatement of the written undertaken of the club to abide by the rules and regulations governing the league and football in general and, not to take football matters to the ordinary court”.

“By the written undertaking, the Club states that it should be considered that it has voluntarily withdrawn from the League and organised football activities if it takes any football matter to the courts for adjudication, rather than the internal dispute resolution mechanisms provided by the Rules, including the right of appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS).

From a business and commercial standpoint, the League body drew attention to several written and informal contracts on which the league is built and that these contracts bind several interests and interrelationships that make for smooth operation of the league.

It went on to cite the return of Nigeria Professional Football League fixtures to the Maiduguri Township Stadium, home of El-Kanemi Warriors as a critical positive contribution of the league in demonstrating that the Federal Government has achieved huge success in containing the Boko Haram insurgency which ravished most of North Eastern Nigeria since 2012.

The LMC therefore assured the public that it will remain resolute in ensuring that NPFL, the flagship of Nigeria football, is operated and managed in accordance with the Framework and Rules of the League and other football governing rules.

Politics › Army Declares Ahmed Salkida, Ahmed Bolori & Aisha Wakil WANTED by nex(op): 5:55pm On Aug 14, 2016
The world is quite aware of the abduction of several persons; women, children and men, including the female students of Government Secondary School Chibok, Borno State Nigeria by Boko Haram Terrorists group. Consequently, appeal was made for their unconditional release by the Federal Government.

https://i1.wp.com/www.barbaric.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/AISHA-WAKIL.jpg

The military also made concerted efforts to rescue them. We also appealed to Nigerians that have any information to volunteer to the military or security agencies to enable us rescue them. However, two recent incidents have pointed to the fact that, there are three individuals namely; Ahmed Salkida, (Ambassador) Ahmed U. Bolori and Aisha Wakil that have information on the conditions and the exact location of these girls.

Therefore, the Nigerian Army hereby declare the two gentlemen and the lady wanted for interrogation. We are relying on the relevant laws of the land and in particular the Terrorism Prevention Act 2011 (as amended) where Nigerians could be punished for failure to disclose information about terrorists or terrorists activities.

This become necessary as a result of their link with the last two videos released by Boko Haram Terrorists and other findings of our preliminary investigations. There is no doubt that these individuals have links with Boko Haram Terrorists and have contacts with them.

https://i0.wp.com/www.barbaric.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Ahmed-Salkida-passport-photo.jpg

They must therefore come forward and tell us where the group is keeping the Chibok Girls and other abducted persons to enable us rescue them. We are therefore calling on all Nigerians and peace loving people to give us useful information on their whereabouts.

We are also liaising with other security agencies for their arrest if they failed to turn up. You are please requested to kindly disseminate this information to the public through your medium.

Sports › Rio Is A Fallen City ; The Olympics Will Not Change Anything. by nex(op): 7:35pm On Aug 04, 2016
WHEN Rio de Janeiro won the right almost seven years ago to host the Olympic games in 2016, the cidade maravilhosa (wonderful city) seemed to deserve its nickname. Violence, as much part of Rio’s image as its beaches, had been falling for more than a decade (see chart). Rio’s economy, and that of the surrounding state (also called Rio de Janeiro), was booming, thanks to the world’s demand for the oil that lies off its shores.

https://i1.wp.com/www.barbaric.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/20160730_AMP001_0.jpg

The games would show off a prosperous, self-confident city, its organisers claimed. As important, if Rio could show that it can plan as well as it parties, it would bury the idea that “Brazil is not a serious country,” as a Brazilian diplomat put it in the 1960s. “Those who give us this chance will not regret it,” promised Luis Inácio Lula da Silva, the president who brought the games to Brazil.

With days to go before the opening ceremony on August 5th, Rio’s self-confidence is looking shaky. On July 24th the Australian team stormed out of the Olympic village in the district of Barra da Tijuca, complaining of clogged toilets and loose wires. But those are trivial glitches compared with the other problems plaguing the host city.
Guanabara Bay, where Olympic sailors are to compete, remains in parts an open sewer. An outbreak last year of the mosquito-borne Zika virus, which causes birth defects, has scared away some sportsmen. Male golfers, in particular, are shunning Rio as if Ipanema beach were a giant sand trap.

Policemen, whose salaries were delayed by a bankrupt state government, have greeted visitors at the international airport with signs that read (in English) “welcome to hell”. A new metro line and bus corridor, the games’ main legacy to cariocas, as the city’s residents are called, are behind schedule.

These local difficulties are compounded by national crises. Brazil is suffering from a severe recession. Its president, Dilma Rousseff, is being impeached on charges that she manipulated government accounts; an interim government, led by Michel Temer, is in charge. Rio is one of the centres of national dysfunction. Petrobras, the state-controlled oil firm at the centre of a multibillion dollar scandal that fuelled demands for Ms Rousseff’s impeachment, has its headquarters there.

The city’s policemen are no exception to the violent Brazilian norm: they killed 40 people in May alone. Its reputation as an urban Dorian Gray—gorgeous to behold but infected by corruption—is not entirely undeserved.

Rio may yet confound doubters. It hosts a huge Carnival every year without plunging into chaos. The sporting arenas are ready. Rio’s cost overruns for building them and for other Olympic spending are smaller than average for host cities, and most of the money was from private sources.

The federal government has given the state 2.9 billion reais ($890m) in emergency aid in part to pay policemen’s salaries. It has sent 27,000 soldiers and national guards to fight crime and prevent terrorism (on July 21st police said they had foiled a plot by home-grown jihadists). The bus links are late but working; organisers promise that the metro will be running by July 30th. After quick repairs to their quarters, the displaced Australians returned.

They and the 500,000 sports fans expected to attend the games will leave the city once they are over. Rio’s 6.5m inhabitants will remain. Whether the Olympics dazzle or disappoint, cariocas will find that they have done little to arrest the city’s long decline.

Beauty is not enough

Whether they live on Rio’s glitzy seafront, in one of the city’s 1,000-odd favelas(shantytowns) or in dowdy dormitory districts, the mood is grim. A law student who came three years ago, intending to stay after her studies, now wants to leave: she is fed up with cuts to the budget of her state university and strikes that have forced it to cancel classes.

A group of businessmen tried to improve the state’s governance in 2008 by paying for a renowned consultant to offer management advice to the administration. A few years later the bureaucrats slipped back into clientelistic habits. Carioca friends of José Padilha, a film director who lives in Los Angeles, have been telling him to stay there. According to a poll conducted last September, 56% of cariocas want to leave the city, up from 27% in 2011.

No tourist will fail to notice the jarring juxtapositions of wealth and poverty, a consequence of Rio’s exuberant topography as well as its poor governance. Residents of lush Gávea can expect to live past 80, 13 years longer than their neighbours in Rocinha, a large favela next door. Crime rates vary wildly.

Last year 133 people died violently in Santa Cruz, a deceptively tranquil district at Rio’s western tip, where broccoli and books are sold side by side in a shabby central market. In the three beachfront bairros of Zona Sul (the southern zone), whose joint population is roughly equal to Santa Cruz’s, just 11 did.

A priority in middle-class Copacabana, where a quarter of residents are 65 or older, is fixing uneven pavements, says Fernando Gabeira, a writer who was an unsuccessful candidate for mayor in 2008. In Complexo do Alemão, a large northern favela with a young population, it is better schools and jobs. Everyone worries about crime.

The vast majority of cariocas live neither along beachfront avenues nor the alleyways of ramshackle favelas. Zona Sul is home to 11% of the city’s inhabitants. Favelas account for 3.7% of the city’s area and house 22% of its people. Most live in charmless low-rise apartment blocks that arch across Rio’s north and west.

And then there is Barra da Tijuca, a fast-growing mini-Miami of car dealerships, marshland and identikit condominiums with names like “Sunflower” and “Villaggio Felicitá”.

Tourism and other services provide most jobs: a quarter of young people work in bars and restaurants. Many have long commutes. Emanuel, a jovial 60-year-old with a missing front tooth, grumbles that it takes him an hour-and-a-half to commute to Leblon, where he sells biscuits and iced tea along the beachfront, from Jacarepaguá, 24km (14 miles) to the west. Some 2m workers stream into Rio daily from its underdeveloped periphery.

The roots of Rio’s discontent go back at least to 1960, when Brazil’s federal government moved to Brasília, the purpose-built capital. Rio had lost industrial leadership to São Paulo, which had more space and more immigrants, 40 years before. The loss of its capital-city status was a blow from which it has yet to recover.

The idea of moving the seat of government to spur development away from the coastline is an old one, set forth in an early constitution enacted in 1891. Few Brazilians took it seriously until Juscelino Kubitschek, elected president in 1956, pushed through a law to make it happen.

Even after civil servants began moving to the modernist capital, cariocas thought important ministries would stay put. Who, they wondered, would swap the cidade maravilhosa for a barren savannah in the middle of nowhere? Rio thrived briefly as a city-state, called Guanabara, but was soon merged into the poorer surrounding state of Rio de Janeiro.

By the 1980s nearly all federal agencies had disappeared. The financial sector followed. Brazil’s central bank stopped using the city as the main centre for trading government securities.

Bankers were frightened away by a spate of kidnappings for ransom in the 1980s. Rio’s stock exchange, founded 180 years earlier, was taken over piecemeal by São Paulo’s exchanges in the 2000s. Brazil’s state development bank still has its headquarters in Rio and a few asset managers moved in. But the city’s importance for Brazil’s economy has progressively diminished.

Apart from the annual bacchanal of Carnival, Rio has found no vocation to replace banking and bureaucracy. The discovery of huge underwater oil deposits in 2007 seemed to offer the city (and the state) an alternative source of jobs and growth. But the industry has been devastated by a combination of low oil prices and the Petrobras scandal. The oil boom reversed the relative decline of Rio’s economy, but perhaps only briefly.

The city is home to a clutch of creative enterprises and universities: Rede Globo, Brazil’s biggest media group, and research units of Microsoft and GE. But these are no more than a kernel for a more dynamic economy.

Culture has not replaced commerce. Bossa nova was conceived on Rio’s beaches in the 1950s, but since then the city has become stifling, says Caetano Veloso, one of Brazil’s most famous musicians, who lives in the city. Tropicalismo, a blend of Brazilian and pop music that Mr Veloso helped pioneer, was born in São Paulo.

“Rio was too blasé,” he says. Blessed with the natural riches of oil and scenery, it has not striven to create its own wealth.Cariocas do not plant, they “just pluck”, observes Ruy Castro, a chronicler of the city.

Olympic hopefuls

Politics have done little to stir them from complacency. Rio’s status as the national capital stunted its institutions. Presidents appointed the mayor; the senate could overturn his decisions. Mayors offered jobs to senators’ sons, encouraging habits of patronage that Rio has yet to break.

The merger between Rio de Janeiro and Guanabara, imposed by military dictators, brought the state’s clientelistic culture to the city. The state especially has been profligate, while spending too little on the services and infrastructure needed to spur investment and improve welfare.

In June the acting governor of Rio state, Francisco Dornelles, declared that its finances constituted a “public calamity”, a formality that allowed the federal government to send aid during the Olympics. The immediate cause was a drop in taxes and royalties from oil, but years of fiscal mismanagement had paved the way.

Cariocas hoped that the games might be a catalyst for better public services and more jobs. The city’s government has partly met those expectations.

The mayor, Eduardo Paes, nearly trebled spending on health and education. He hired 43,000 teachers and 21,000 health workers, 80% of whom work in the city’s impoverished north and west. Now 4.4m people have access to family doctors, up from 329,000 when Mr Paes took office in 2009.

The proportion of cariocas served by mass transit rose from 18% to 63% during his tenure. City hall should be making these improvements anyway, the mayor admits, but the Olympics provided a “pretext” to push them through quickly. Games-related works boosted the local economy while Brazil was in recession. Cariocas’ incomes rose even as they fell in Brazil as a whole, according to a study by the Fundação Getulio Vargas, a university.

The state government meanwhile tried to curb violent crime. Starting in 2008 it sent heavily armed troops into 38 favelas to evict drug gangs, then set up “pacification police units” (UPPs) to keep the peace. It worked. Violent crime in Rio halved between 2009 and 2012.

But police commanders created too many UPPs too quickly, overstretching the force. In training they continued to emphasise the skills required to hold territory, neglecting those needed to forge strong relations with the community.

“A year of this and you could turn a Benedictine monk into a warrior,” laments Íbis Pereira, a former police commander now at Viva Rio, an NGO. In Complexo do Alemão, shootouts between gangsters and trigger-happy police have become frequent, says Luisa Cabral, a social worker in the neighbourhood. After its decline, the number of violent deaths has crept back up across the city this year.

Ms Cabral now thinks the UPPs should leave the favelas, letting the drug traffickers return. After Mr Paes accused the state of doing a “horrible” job on security in an interview on CNN, 20,000 Americans returned their Olympic tickets.

A successful game could lift Rio’s downbeat mood. That will not be enough to make the city an economic dynamo. The spectacular scenery makes people want to come, but it will take more enlightened crime-fighting, better fiscal management and improved public services to make them want to stay. Until its leaders provide that, Rio will not become a great city, merely a great setting for one.

Business › Diamond Bank Introduces Online Loan Application Platform. by nex(op): 7:30pm On Aug 04, 2016
Diamond Bank has raised the bar in Nigeria’s financial services sub-sector with the introduction of an online loan application platform that allows customers to request for a loan, monitor and receive automatic feedback on the approval process anywhere, anytime without hassles.

https://i2.wp.com/www.barbaric.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/diamond-bank-images.jpg

With this, the Bank has reaffirmed its commitment to continue to drive financial inclusion of the un(der)banked in the economy, and consolidated its revolutionary leadership role in the crusade for quality service delivery through digital innovations.

The new Diamond loan application is a convenient, hassle free application and it is not limited to Diamond customers only.

In a press release made available to media practitioners, the Bank stated that the online loan application platform is in line with its vision to be at the forefront of using technology to deliver quality customer service that goes “beyond banking”.

“With the introduction of the Diamond loan platform in this technology driven age, it will be unnecessary for an individual to leave the comfort of his or her home to visit a branch to apply for a loan. All they need to do is to visit the bank’s website: www.diamondbank.com to fill a loan application and monitor the approval process,” the Bank stated.

One of the key features of the online loan application platform is that one does not need to have an account with Diamond Bank before he/she can apply for a loan.

Ayona Trimnell, Head, Corporate Communications Division of Diamond Bank, stated that the digital transformation offers invaluable benefits and advantages to the customer, pointing that the new online loan platform is simple and user-friendly.

She said: “It gives the customer greater control of the loan application process because the customer is able to monitor the loan requests and the interactive loan calculator helps the customer to plan his/her monthly repayment. Also, the online loan platform provides access to information on personal and business loans”.

Diamond Bank’s digital initiative started in 2014, when it launched a major redesign of its website to promote more digital services for its customers and financial inclusion of the unbanked in Nigeria.

Since then, the Bank has maintained its leadership role in driving digital transformation in the financial services sub-sector, and this has led to a number of projects that have translated to rapid growth on the retail side. The Banks digital leadership in the financial services sub-sector gained ascendency in the last two years with its Diamond Mobile Apps usage increasing from 1.6 million to 5.1 million while volume increased from 1.26 billion to 5.5 billion year on year.

Since Diamond Bank’s incorporation in December 1990, the Bank has challenged the market environment by constantly introducing new products, innovative technology and setting new benchmarks in digital financial service delivery. Today, Diamond Bank is best placed to respond to changing lifestyles and is leading the digital transformation in response to these societal shifts

Politics › Edo Governorship Election Would Be Conclusive – INEC by nex(op): 10:45am On Aug 03, 2016
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has assured the electorate and stakeholders that the Edo state governorship election to be conducted on September 10, would be a conclusive one.

https://i1.wp.com/www.barbaric.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Edo-state-to-await-INEC-decision.jpg

The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the state, Mr Sam Olumekun, gave the assurance on Monday at the commission’s voter education implementation meeting in Benin.

“We want to assure the people that we are prepared to conduct a conclusive governorship election on Sept. 10,’’ he said.

Olumekun explained that inconclusive elections were not about INEC, and attributed them to incidents of violence and thuggery.

He said that the meeting was to critically x-ray the effective ways to sustain voter education ahead of the election.

He stated that elections and electioneering were difficult because politicians saw politics as a do-or-die thing.

“We thank God that the 2011 election was a watershed, while the 2015 got a global acceptance as credible.’’

Participants at the meeting called for collaboration between INEC and critical stakeholders, including the media, civil society organisations, persons with disability, to ensure effective education of the electorate.

Politics › I’m Not Working Against @speakerdogara -gbajabiamila. by nex(op): 12:57pm On Aug 02, 2016
The Leader of the House of Representatives, Rep Femi Gbajabiamila (APC Lagos), has rejected allegation that he was behind the former appropriation chairman, Rep Abudulmumin Jibrin to distabililise ‎the House.

https://i2.wp.com/www.barbaric.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Honourable-Femi-Gbajabiamila.jpg

Rep Gbajabiamila who was responding to the insinuations being made that he was behind the embattled former appropriation chairman, warned the public not to judge him on the controversy surrounding the issue of budget padding.

He said “this text message, which desperately seeks to finger me in some macabre plot to destabilize the House is a throw back and echoes our dark post speakership election history. The resurfacing or resurgence of the faceless text messengers will not help us as a House and let me quickly add that it will. Since the budget controversy that engulfed the House about a week ago, I have pointedly maintained a dignified silence.

“I did this for the sake of the institution I represent and which I have labored hard to grow and protect, knowing that whatever I say could be impactful both within the House and outside it”, he added.

https://i0.wp.com/www.barbaric.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Femi-Gbajabiamila.jpg

He maintained that he was determined to keep in place the glue that holds an otherwise fragmented House, protect its integrity and at the same time, avoid eroding the little confidence and vestiges of hope Nigerians have in us.

“Unfortunately, the controversy has now taken a different turn following the rather strange if not comical text making the rounds among members about my complicity in this rather sordid matter. I am being dragged into an arena I tried very hard to stay out of only for the good of the House.

“On the budget issue at hand, it is clear that our budget process needs radical reform and very quickly too. Yes , allegations have been made but I strongly believe judgment should not be passed based on allegations.

“We operate a constitutional democracy and we must at all times submit to its dictates and ethos. All parties are innocent until otherwise proven. This should be our guide. I plead with all members. The mudslinging must stop..

“‎My strongest critics and biggest political adversaries in the House cannot deny the fact that my commitment has always been to strengthen the legislature and its processes and our democracy as a whole.

“I consider everyone a friend and colleague and urge that as we collectively work towards a stronger legislature and strive to deepen our democracy, we do not pull back the hands of the clock nor lose sight of the enormous responsibility placed upon us by providence as members of a critical arm of government”.

Nairaland General › Nigeria Rated Among Top 10 Future Emerging Markets. by nex(op): 12:51pm On Aug 02, 2016
BMI Research, a Fitch Group company and financial market analysis firm, has recently identified 10 emerging markets from the Asian and African region that are set to become new drivers of economic growth over the next ten years. Nigeria made the cut. Other countries on the list include Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Egypt, Kenya, Indonesia, Myanmar, Pakistan, Philippines, and Vietnam.

https://i2.wp.com/www.barbaric.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/mnew-Nigeria-lagos-wow-17.jpg

The report says that construction and manufacturing will play an important role in driving the economies of these countries. Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Myanmar will specifically see a strong growth in the manufacturing industry. All countries are set to see the construction sector thrive, particularly to assist urban growth and the manufacturing industry. Mining and Gas industry will play a far smaller role than it has in the past years. While the commodity-driven model is not expected to make a comeback.

Mining and Gas industry will play a far smaller role than it has in the past years. While the commodity-driven model is not expected to make a comeback.

Real GDP growth in Nigeria will be weak in 2016 – BMI put a forecast at 3.1% expansion – as the naira peg and capital controls will continue to weigh on economic activity through the course of the year, exacerbating the global oil price slump’s effects on the Nigerian economy. While 3.1% growth would mark an acceleration on 2015’s 2.8%, it is nevertheless a downward revision from our previous forecast of 3.6%. This revision is due to delays to the planned expansionary budget and a recent data release, which has shown the extent to which businesses are being hampered by capital controls.

The Nigerian government’s move to secure USD6bn in loans from China signals two things: strengthening relations with the Asian giant and a reluctance to comply with the stipulations on economic policy which would likely have accompanied an IMF loan.

The IT markets in Ghana, Kenya and Nigeria all contracted sharply in 2014 and 2015 as a depression in the commodities complex hurt economic performance and resulted in steep currency depreciation against the US dollar that eroded already weak purchasing power. This was as a reality check on previous optimism regarding their economic growth trajectory and IT markets, as a lack of structural and institutional strength was laid bare. The fortunes of the three markets are not however tied that closely, with Ghana and Nigeria more susceptible to further negative shocks in the short-term if the commodities markets take another turn downwards.

The ongoing economic malaise has compounded BMI’s already negative outlook for the Nigerian power sector. A combination of sabotage to gas pipelines, a scarcity of access to foreign exchange and a lack of liquidity in the distribution segment to weigh on much-needed private investment in the sector – entrenching slow growth in capacity and generation.

There is however a positive outlook for the Nigerian mobile market and the country’s telecoms sector in general. This is despite an increasingly challenging economic climate which, in Q116, saw a 0.4% contraction in real GDP – largely attributable to falling crude prices and oil production. Subscription growth in the mobile market continues to be driven by factors including operators’ promotional activities, multiple SIM ownership and the extension of network coverage to underserved areas. Meanwhile broadband penetration remains very low. There continues to be significant demand for traditional voice and data services, and to a large extent this demand has remained untapped.

Nigeria has a large pool of skilled and unskilled labour relative to other countries in Sub-Saharan Africa
(SSA) owing to its vast population and the sheer number people completing various levels of education. However, corruption, poor infrastructure and frequent strike action negatively affect the quality of offerings at the country’s educational institutions, especially at the tertiary level, leading businesses to invest extensively in training or the recruitment of skilled foreign workers.

Nigeria:

Primary sector: Oil, AgricBusiness, Telecom.
Key exports: Oil, Cocoa, Entertainment
2015 GDP growth: 3.4%.
Unemployment rate: 20.5%.
Exchange rate: 335 Nigerian naira per dollar.

Nairaland General › Nigeria Gets Electronic Seed Platform. by nex(op): 7:38pm On Aug 01, 2016
An electronic platform on seeds in West Africa has been launched to boost access to quality seed production in Nigeria and the sub-region.

The electronic platform www.wasix.net is being positioned to be a rallying point for seed producers, authorised distributors, seed traders and stakeholders of the seed industry.

https://i1.wp.com/www.barbaric.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Y13_0041-Seeds.jpg

It also meets the challenge of information on seeds and increases farmers’ chances of access to quality seeds to improve food production and enhance food security.

The platform will help improve the practice of seed quality analysis and the official catalog of seed varieties.

Farmers will so be able to connect to seed producers, distributors and stakeholders in the seed industry for high yield seeds, which is important to increased productivity and food security.

Speaking at the launch, the Director General of the National Agricultural Seeds Council, Dr. Philip Olusegun Ojo said the launch is to improve seed trade in the West African region.

“It is my belief that the provision of such a facility within the ECOWAS community will not only promote regional seed trade but also improve access to genetic materials officially released by countries within the sub-region.

The provision of this platform therefore, will certainly open up the seed trade barriers within the sub-region; promote healthy competition amongst the actors and by implication create jobs and wealth, food security and improve our revenue earnings, which is in line with the policy direction of this administration on economic diversification and job creation.”

The website provides the farmer with information such as the origin of the seeds, the type, availability and country of availability.

The goal of the launch in seven West African countries: Benin, Burkina Faso, Niger, Ghana, Mali, Senegal and Nigeria, is to contribute to the sustainable improvement of agricultural productivity in West Africa through actions that will increase the use of high-yield seeds from the current statistics of 12% in 2012 to 25% by 2017.

The platform was initiated by the West and Central African Council for Agricultural Research and Development (CORAF/WECARD) in collaboration with the West African Agricultural Productivity Program (WAAPP).

Celebrities › Stephanie Linus Flags Off The “stop VAWIE” Campaign In Edo State. by nex(op): 7:33pm On Aug 01, 2016
Ahead of the upcoming September governorship elections in Edo state, star actress Stephanie Linus, has once again reaffirmed her commitment to
fighting violence against women in elections. The Stop Violence Against Women In Elections (Stop VAWIE) Ambassador made her commitment at the Stop VAWIE campaign launch in Edo state recently
where she encouraged women to participate actively in the electoral process and speak out when they are being marginalized.

https://i2.wp.com/www.barbaric.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Stephanie-Linus-VAWIE.jpg

The event was organized by the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) in partnership with the National Democratic Institute (NDI) and the
African Women Empowerment Guild (AWEG). Some of the dignitaries who attended include Hon. Justice Cromwell .O. Idahosa, the Chief Judge of Edo
State; Hon. Henry Idahagbon, Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Edo State; Jasper Veen, NDI Country Director and Iyom Josephine Anenih,
Former Minister of Women Affairs.

Speaking at the event, Mrs Linus called on women and all citizens of Edo state to eschew all forms of violence that will affect women in the
electoral process. She maintained that all violence against women is wrong and must be stopped. “Violence that results in the exclusion or under-representation of women, or denies women the representative of their
choice inherently undermines what democracy really stands for.”

The Campaign Launch also coincided with the flag off of the "Vote Not Fight: Election No Be War" and the "Leave No One Behind: Disability Votes
Count" initiatives for the Edo State elections.

The Stop Violence against Women in Elections (Stop VAWIE) campaign encourages women and all other citizens of Edo state to eschew all forms of
violence that will affect women in the electoral process and also recognizes that this can increase the participation of women in the
political process. This is the best way to advocate for change. The campaign is focused on Nigerian women and upholds the belief that democracy
without women is impossible. By informing all women in Edo state about their civic rights and responsibilities in the upcoming September 10, 2016
governorship elections, the campaign inspires women to make active and positive impact to the elections and to politics in general.

Nairaland General › Governor Ambode Defends Eko Atlantic City Project. by nex(op): 12:23pm On Aug 01, 2016
Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Sunday embarked on an extensive tour of the Eko Atlantic City (EAC) Project, expressing confidence that the initiative will not only boost the economy of the State, but also increase its Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).

https://i2.wp.com/www.barbaric.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/mnew-Nigeria-lagos-wow-17.jpg

Governor Ambode, who was accompanied on the tour by members of the State Executive Council, pledged the total commitment of his administration towards the success of the project, saying that it would go a long way to facilitate the quest to grow potentials of the State economy.

He said; “I would like to express the total support of this government to this project because at the end of the day we need to grow the economy of Lagos and this obviously is going to have multiplier effect on our IGR.

“We promise that we are going to grow our IGR to N30bn by 2017 and N50bn by 2018 and this project is a sure outlet in achieving that goal,” he said.

He also expressed satisfaction on the infrastructure already put in place, saying that it now behooves on investors to take advantage of the massive opportunities.

The Eko Atlantic City Project is a multi-billion dollar project sitting on over 10million square metres and is expected to accommodate over 150,000 people who would reside there and another 250,000 who would work and commute within the city on a daily basis.

While commending the promoters of the EAC Project for their confidence in committing huge resources to the Nigerian economy, Governor Ambode said their investment was a positive sign that Nigeria remains the investment hub in Africa.

The Governor said: “Notwithstanding the economic recession that has befallen the country right now, we have come to also show that outside the recession, there is a whole lot of progress going on in the investment climate in Lagos State.

“We are very happy that the signs are looking very good for investment in Lagos. We are also very happy that we are doing everything possible to encourage investors to come into the State and I will like to assure that we are committed to make this project a big success,” he said.

Governor Ambode, who also inspected the 8.5km long shoreline wall, otherwise known as the ‘Great Wall of Lagos’, built to protect the EAC, said it was gratifying that the project will not only protect the new city, but also protect the whole of Victoria Island against any ocean surge, which was one of the primary reasons for the project.

He continued: “This is a new and a bigger version of Victoria Island. We are going to have an Energy City here, a financial hub that is more or less going to run under a Free Trade Zone and so on.

“Basically, all these put together turns Lagos to that leader that we want it to be in Africa and the quality of infrastructure that has been put here is also encouraging.

“I just want to encourage other investors and other people who had taken one step or the other in respect of the Eko Atlantic City that the time is now because in another one and half years, this place will be something else,” the Governor said.

So far, out of the over 10 million square meters of the project, about six million square meters have been reclaimed, while there are 15 bridges and two tunnels designed with the project.

Earlier, Chairman of Eko Atlantic City, Mr. Ronald Chagoury said one of the first two residential buildings in the new city will be completed by the end of August, while the second will be ready before the end of the year, adding that the first office block will be ready between September and October, 2016.

Chagoury described the project as an impressive financial district which upon completion, would compare with the financial district in Paris, France and the 5th Avenue in New York, United States.

He added that the Great of Lagos was scientifically designed to withstand any ocean surge and that it was built to last for 1, 000 years.

Also, Managing Director of Access Bank, Mr. Herbert Wigwe, whose bank is the major partner with the promoters of the EAC project and the Lagos State Government, said aside the fact that adequate arrangement had been made to protect the City, the project was all about saving the State and creating a new tomorrow for people to live in Lagos.

He added that with the project, the land that was lost over time to the bar beach had been reclaimed, adding that investors and interested people need not entertain any fear as to the safety of the City.

Politics › Highlights Of Imo State Senatorial Election. by nex(op): 5:40pm On Jul 31, 2016
NAN(Imo): The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Mr Ben Uwajumogu of the All Progressive Congress (APC) winner of Imo North Senatorial District rerun election held on July 28.

https://i2.wp.com/www.barbaric.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/BEN.png

Uwajumogu scored 56,076 votes to defeat Mr Athan Achonu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who scored 43, 815 votes.

“My gratitude goes more to Gov. Rochas Okorocha whose structure helped me to win this senatorial election”, Benjamin Uwajumogu stated.

Prof. Arinze Agbogu, the INEC Returning Officer for Imo North Senatorial District, who announced the result in the early hours of Friday, said the outcome was a summation of scores of July 23 and that of July 28 exercise.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalled that Uwajumogu, had scored 48,921 on July 23, while Achonu, of the PDP, scored 40, 142 votes which made INEC to declare the rerun inconclusive.

Agbogu said that available data before him showed that Uwajumogu had majority of lawful votes cast, and therefore returned elected for the Imo North Senatorial District.

Similarly, INEC declared Mr Nkenna Nzeruo of the APC winner of Oru East State Constituency, while Mr Collins Chiji also of APC was declared winner for Isiala Mbano State Constituency.

The two state constituencies’ elections were equally declared inconclusive due to reported cases of violence that marred the exercise in some communities in the two areas on July 23.

Uwajumogu told journalists in Owerri that he was highly elated over the victory, adding “my gratitude goes more to Gov. Rochas Okorocha whose structure helped me to win this senatorial election’’

Politics › Senate Commended Dor ‘thorough’ Ambassadorial Screening by nex(op): 9:59pm On Jul 29, 2016
President Buhari’s Senior Special Assistant on National Assembly Matters, Senator Ita Enanghas commended the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, for what it described as a“thorough and intellectual approach” used in carrying out the screening of the 47‎ ambassadorial nominees.

https://i2.wp.com/www.barbaric.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Senate.jpg

He gave the commendation‎ when he led a delegation of the ambassadorial nominees immediately after the screening exercise, on a courtesy visit to the Senate President.
Senator Enang who described the screening exercise as the most thorough he had witnessed during his time in the National Assembly, also praised the Senator Monsurat Sunmonu-led committee for its show of dedication and commitment.
“Let me use this opportunity to commend the Senate committee for the way and manner in which the screening exercise was carried out. I must say it is the most thorough and intellectual I’ve seen in my time here. Also, the committee has demonstrated by its decision to screen the nominees despite the Senate being on recess that it is committed and dedicated to service of our dear nation,” Enang added.
In his response, the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki advised the nominees to represent the country positively in their respective postings, adding that they hadmade history by going through the screening exercise.

“As you go forward, you are taking position in the history of the country. Going forward, they will be representing our country on the global stage. We appeal to you to please make us proud, though there are challenges, I urge you to look at things differently in your service to the nation. ‎As you know, it is in the interest of our country to have ambassadors all over, as the absence will slow down bilateral relations‎. I wish you all the best.”

Senator Saraki also charged the Presidency to, as quickly as possible, forward names of non career nominees to the Senate on resumption in September, for a similar thorough screening exercise, saying “the earlier we have substantive ambassadors at our various foreign posts, the better at this critical time of repositioning the country for better.”

Among the 47 ambassadorial nominees, Borno State has the highest number of 3, with Kwara, Edo, Ekiti and Anambra states having two each while the remaining states have one nominee each.
Bayelsa, Ondo, Plateau and Ebonyi are the only four states that are not represented in the list of the 47 career ambassadors sent to the Senate by President Buhari.

Education › National Open University To Offer Scholarships To 100 Idps. by nex(op): 3:47pm On Jul 29, 2016
Prof. Abdalla Adamu, the Vice-Chancellor, National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), has said that the university is working towards offering scholarships to 100 Internally Displaced Persons(IDPs) in the country.

https://i0.wp.com/www.barbaric.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/login-img.jpg

Adamu, who stated this at the 1st NOUN Distinguished Lecture on Wednesday in Abuja, said that the university was working in collaboration with a local bank on the initiative.

He said that the institution had made its willingness to educate IDPs known to one of the leading banks in the country.

“A representative of that bank made an unofficial statement; but they said they would back it up to sponsor 100 IDPs in the camps.

“We are still working on the modalities; we will enrol them in NOUN and the bank will pay.”

The vice-chancellor said that the World Bank had also advised NOUN to liaise with state governments to provide it with a list of indigent students for sponsorship.

He added that World Bank had also said that indigent and disenfranchised students would be enrolled in NOUN under the bank’s facility, with their states’ approval.

He explained that the World Bank would not give money to NOUN, but to the states to facilitate the education of such students.

He added that all the states needed to do was to inform the World Bank and it would sponsor the students in NOUN through its access to education facility.

Adamu expressed optimism that the offer would provide an opportunity to educate a huge number of people who did not have money to afford education.

He, however, noted that globally, counties were faced with the triple challenge of expanding access, improving quality and ensuring equity, especially in higher education.

He said that in order to address and proffer solutions to the challenges, NOUN had instituted its public lecture series.

This, he said, would be a platform where professional stakeholders would share their experiences and new ideas on higher education.

In his remarks, Prof. Asha Kanwar, the Guest Lecturer at the event, said that Open Education Resources (OER) would help in getting education to the unreached.

kanwar, who is the President, Commonwealth of Learning(COL), said that OER were free and readily available.

She said that OER could be re-used and re-purposed to suit different needs and could be available in any medium such as print, audio, video and digital.

According to her, open universities have traditionally built their reputations on the quality of their content.

“By making quality content free, OER offer a unique advantage to open universities by freeing faculty time from course development.

“This time can now be allocated to learner support which needs more attention.

“Open universities can develop OER policies and build the capacity of their staff to harness the potential of OER.’’

Kanwar said that only seven African institutions had OER policies and commended NOUN for being the pioneer OER in Africa which attracted the Global Open Education Consortium 2016 Open Education award.

She, however, called for the deployment of affordable technology in reaching the unreached in Nigeria.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the lecture was; “Can Open Distance Learning (ODL) Reach the Unreached? Lessons from the Commonwealth’’.
