Entertainment › Frank Odega Goes From “gerrarrahia” To Latest Etisalat Ambassador by nex(mod): 6:56pm On Sep 01, 2015
https://www.that1960chick.com/wp-content/uploads/FrankOdega_that1960chick.png

I tell you God & social media is amazing!

Frank Odega has been hustling in Nollywood for over a decade.

And then late last year a clip of him taken from a old Nollywood movie saying,“Gerrarra Hia Mehn Shiiiiiiiii” went viral & over night he became a viral sensation, even rapper 50 cent shared the now famous clip on his Instagram page!

If you’re active on social media you must have seen the “Gerrara Here” clip or seen the meme!

Anyways Odega has gone from viral star to brand ambassador for telecoms giant Etisalat Nigeria. He stars in their latest ad and we could not be happier for him!

Politics › Re: Electricity Usage Status For The Month Of August -share Your Experience by nex(m): 6:47pm On Sep 01, 2015
Electricity has improved quite a lot in the Ajah area of Lagos. In fact, the biggest challenge we're facing now is over-consumption of electricity. From paying monthly bills of about N3,000 when we used to have an average of 2 hours of electricity per day, we now pay as much as N20,000 per month.

People are beginning to shut down their security lights and other non-essential electrical appliances. Sometimes I come home at night and everywhere is dark. The only way I can tell there's light is that no single generator is running in the estate. At one point I had to switch over from Eko DISCO power, which was on, to my generator and run it for some hours in order to make sure it doesn't go bad for lack of use.

Sports › All The Fun You Missed At At Celebrity Fans Challenge 2015 by nex(op): 1:41pm On Sep 01, 2015
The biggest celebrity football showdown ever lived up to its promise on Saturday, as some of the biggest names in the Nigerian entertainment industry treated fans to exciting duels at the Four Points by Sheraton, Lagos.

9ice, Reminisce, Timi Dakolo, Frank Edoho, Fred Amata, Illbliss, Segun Arinze and ID Cabasa locked horns in the name of their respective football clubs on an unforgettable night.

https://www.barbaric.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/912x1368xIMG_0053.jpg.pagespeed.ic.r0R9bbyeBn.jpg

The action kicked off with an exciting clash between Chelsea fan 9ice and Arsenal fan Illbliss. 9ice defeated Illbliss thanks to verdicts handed out by a panel of judges led by ex- Super Eagles defender Sam Sodje. They both participated in tasks
that included singing, dancing, match commentaries and exciting debates. 9ice shocked the audience and judges with his impressive and broad knowledge of football history and eventually bagged two awards- The Superfan award and the award for creativity, both powered by Merrybet.

Timi Dakolo and Frank Edoho were next, in what was the tightest and most fiercely contested match. Frank Edoho, who is a Chelsea fan, gave Timi Dakolo- an Arsenal fan a run for his money, as they both showed depth in football knowledge and extreme passion. Timi Dakolo’s breathtaking rendition of the Arsenal club anthem however, gave him the edge as he defeated Frank.

Nollywood stars Segun Arinze and Fred Amata locked horns next for Chelsea and Arsenal respectively, in another evenly matched duel. Segun Arinze, not deterred by the defeat his club had suffered earlier in the day, was quite impressive in his play on words and overall creativity and defeated Fred Amata.

The final showdown of the night was between Reminisce and ID Cabasa for Manchester United and Chelsea respectively. Reminisce provided the moment of the night, when he sang the Manchester United anthem- ‘Glory Glory Man United’ in Yoruba language. The venue erupted in appreciation of his creativity.

ID Cabasa edged the debates, but Reminisce’s creative performances gave him the edge as he defeated his opponent.

The host- Kiibati Bankole, kitted in a refereeing outfit (complete with her yellow, red cards and whistle) played the role of the match referee.

The winning celebrities were awarded match trophies and prizes from SLOT and Merrybet.

It was a night the fans and celebrities will not forget in a hurry, as they were treated to musical and comedy performances and great fun all round. I ran into a couple of my own guys who are hardcore sports fans too: Ayourb, Lanre Neville, Emma Dele and of course Yvonne Onyemekwu.

TV/Movies › Will Smith's Terrible Nigerian Accent As Dr. Bennet Omalu In "Concussion” by nex(op): 10:14am On Sep 01, 2015
https://www.that1960chick.com/wp-content/uploads/Will_Smith_Concussion_Movie_Trailer_Video.png

Will Smith stars in the new movie Concussion which is the real-life story of Nigerian-American doctor Bennet Ifekandu Omalu, the doctor who first discovered chronic traumatic encephalopathy (or CTE) after he conducted an autopsy on former NFL player Mike Webster. The movie follows Omalu’s struggle to get NFL executives to recognise the life threatening disease.

The movie is set for release in December.

While watching the movie trailer which was just released the one thing that struck me was Will Smith’s terrible “Nigerian” accent.

I do not know any Nigerian or Nigeria/American that speaks with the accent Will Smith is using in this movie. The accent sounds very East/Southern African to me. I would have expected an actor of Will Smith’s caliber to have done thorough research before taking on a movie like this and not followed the path of other mediocre actors who have also wrongly portrayed the Nigerian accent on film.

Surely it can’t be that hard to find Nigerians in America…I am disappointed…Big Willy fell my hand.

Americans need to realize Africans don’t all have the same accent…

Watch the trailer below & you decide if he nailed the Nigerian accent or not. I have also included a video of Bennet Omalu so you can listen for yourself & compare the accents.

Concussion Trailer:

N100,000 each as payment for what?
Science/Technology › My First Experience Of Twitter’s Periscope by nex(op): 2:40pm On Aug 30, 2015
I'm always on Social Media, so it's okay to assume I know everything that happens on there, but I really don't. I try not to pay attention to everything since it seems everybody is trying too hard to start a trend. Usually, I'm always about my clients' business, and writing original articles takes its equal share of my online time.

Earlier in the month, when my partner, was going on and on about Periscope, and how it was going to change everything, especially for small businesses, I had to come clean that I didn't have a clue what it was, and was hardly interested.

https://www.barbaric.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/1920x1080xperiscope-logo-1920.jpg.pagespeed.ic.3Mt5PZi1Hl.jpg

Periscope is an mobile application for live-streaming of videos which social media giant, Twitter purchased for $100 million in March of 2015. So far, they claim to have gotten 10,000,000 registered users, including me (I just joined this morning). The app is currently exclusive to Android and iOS, though I'm sure it'll be on all platforms soon.

From the very first moment I heard about periscope, my first concern was how home-made pornography could go haywire with that kind of broadcast capacity in the hands of ordinary people. Between 4am when I signed up and now, I've already happened on a stripper's account, and another of a guy doing things that shouldn't be mentioned on this site. Largely, it is much saner than I thought.

Piracy seems to be a more serious matter, and content owners are already complaining about exclusive content being broadcast by users of Periscope to their friends. The premiere of "Game Of Thrones" Season 5, and also, the Floyd Mayweather VS Manny Pacquiao match were beamed on Periscope by viewers who had access. Definitely more measures need to be put in place to protect copyright, and I believe their team is working on ways to get things sorted.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6XyBza5-w-Y

There are also a couple of technical issues which are currently being tackled. Connectivity problems, app crashing, privacy problems, identity duplication, server problems, and all the other bugs that creep up every time a little leaguer breaks into the big league. They'll get through it, and I'm following their journey for tips on how to take mine.

https://www.barbaric.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/1600x2560xScreenshots_2015-08-30-09-38-46.png.pagespeed.ic.T4nLQfckr9.jpg

It's not strange, looking at the map of Periscope users worldwide, out of more 200 people usually broadcasting at 9am Nigerian time, none is in Africa. It's natural, considering our data limitations, and the fact that it hasn't really been promoted much around these parts. I do believe the Periscope app will play a huge role in getting small New Media outfits like mine to bridging the broadcast gap.

Do check out www.periscope.tv , try it out and let's know what you think. We'll soon be broadcasting some celebrity interviews, events, and backstage videos so don't forget to follow us @Bar_Baric.

This study doesn't sound very scientific at all. There are chemicals in the body responsible for sex drive and event happiness. I was expecting to see information on how excessive sex could lead to less testoterone or oestrongene and also lead to less levels of endorphins, dopamine and serotonin.

Even as a "layman", I'm disappointed by this report. They should be more detailed, and back their claim up with real science rather than suggestive information.

It shows Nigeria has no where else for foreigners to visit. Apart from the shrine nothing else is unique enuff to intrigue an artist in Nigeria. Even national theater be like dirty these days. We have truly lost all Africa.
Poliporpor:
yeah I love the fact he visited there. What am saying in the real sense is this place is the investment of fela. Does it mean our govt can't create a place that truly depicts African culture? Am saying in respect to posterity. Without imaginative write ups isn't there someone we go to feel the experience of the cultures of our ancestors.
Apologies, but first off, FELA did not build the New Afrika Shrine. Femi Kuti did. It is totally different from the place which has now been converted to the FELA Museum.

Secondly, I have to ask you if you've ever been to the Nike Art Gallery in Lekki. Every foreigner who visits Nigeria should be taken to that place. They will never want to go back to their country ever again. I was there myself earlier in the week, and it took a lot of self respect for me to head back to my house.

My people, there are places to be seen in this Nigeria. Most of us just don't know them yet.

Autos › OLX Partners Mandilas To Provide Free Data On Used Cars by nex(op): 3:19pm On Aug 21, 2015
Nigeria’s top online classifieds, OLX, Tuesday announced its partnership with Mandilas, one of the leading players in the auto industry to offer users on the OLX platform free vehicle valuation and diagnostic services.
In addition, Mandilas will list its vehicles on the OLX platform in an effort to attract buyers from across the country.

Speaking at the press conference, the OLX country manager, Lola Masha stated that “the partnership between two trusted brands in Nigeria – Mandilas and OLX – is truly one of a kind. It reinforces OLX’s commitment to enhancing its users experience on the platform and also provides a nationwide reach for Mandilas.”

The also stated that “this collaboration with Mandilas validates the effectiveness of OLX as a platform with a wide range of vehicles where buyers can find great car deals and trade with trusted sellers”.

The partnership will offer eligible users who post their cars for sale on the OLX site, an opportunity to have their cars screened and evaluated for free. At the end of the screening, the user will get an evaluation certificate from Mandilas that will state the current market value of the car as well as the condition of each part of the car. This will benefit both the buyer who is worried about the worth and condition of the car they want to buy and the seller who is not sure of the monetary value of the car.

While expressing delight working with OLX, the General Manager, Mandilas, Stephen Gladwin stated that “the partnership with OLX will help build trust amongst Nigerians who are in the market to buy or sell their used cars because of the certificate they get at the end of the screening process”.

https://i1.wp.com/dailytimes.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/IMG_8809.jpg?fit=300%2C300

Gladwin added, “Over the years, Mandilas has built a reputation of providing unrivalled service in the auto industry. We are excited about the partnership with OLX, the number 1 online classifieds site in Nigeria. OLX has provided a platform where users can feel safe buying and selling used vehicles across the country.’’

OLX is a leading global classifieds platform in growth markets and is available in more than 40 countries and over 50 languages.

Business › Between Afriland Properties And Lagos State On The Falomo Shopping Mall by nex(op):
Reading the OFFICIAL STATEMENT from Afriland Properties on the Falomo Shopping Mall redevelopment project with LSDPC, and its alledged cancellation, the air begins to clear on some previously alarming terms as stated by the Secretary to Lagos State.

First off, “alleged cancellation” has to be stressed because one party cannot simply wake up and unilaterally cancel a project planned, approved, and processed over years by 2 parties mutually. They must come together, in order to agree on the termination, and due compensation for the party which has invested all the time and effort.

https://www.barbaric.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/ariel-2-copy1.jpg.pagespeed.ce.XrQXo6uDhS.jpg

It seems quite fair that an unproductive shopping mall on such a choice property in the state would be converted into a monumental N30 billion investment to generate hundreds of billions of Naira more over the next 50 years Lagos State, gets 35% equity. This is what the Godfather would call ‘an offer they can’t refuse’.

The fact that this property will eventually be handed over to the Lagos State Government after 50 years is a big plus too. Anyone against this deal is either uninformed, or mischievous.

https://www.barbaric.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/1024x677xAmbode.jpg.pagespeed.ic.tPcq-AGGbx.jpg

The current Lagos State Government has passed this off as a N50 million land lease for 50 years, and that is quite alarming. It’s important that Lagosians are now being made aware of the true state of affairs. Nigerians have to understand that the N50 million was paid to the Lagos State Government only as an Expression Of Interest.

The current Lagos administration has to be very cautious of its actions. Moving to demolish Alade Market and Ladipo Market all in the name of Market Re-Development despite massive resistance, while moving against the same Market Re-Development in Falomo, where it has been accepted and commenced.

If we proceed to forcefully revoke a very fair deal agreed upon between Government and a private investor, what do we say to other private investors? How do we building up on the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) which Governor Ambode himself kept harping on during his campaign? What do say to the Alade Market and Ladipo Market traders to whom Lagos Government is attempting to sell this philosophy of Market Redesign and Re-Development? We must do the right thing.

We see it every day, man gets caught cheating, wifey attacks the side chick!

I’ve always wondered why women target the other woman when their boyfriend/fiancé/husband is caught cheating? I’ve heard of many instances where the wife and her friends roll up on the side chick to “warn” her or bless her with some hot slaps. But what about the man? They often get forgiven while the community of wives pray against this Jezebel and others likes her.

Shouldn’t the offended woman direct her anger at her husband? You know the one who took those vows with her? Wetin consine sidechick for this matter? She’s not the one that is betraying her family.

I’ve heard firstahand stories of side chicks who got bolder after being confronted by wifey!

One happened in Lagos recently, the wife went to a popular hair salon where she confronted the side chick and gave her like three hot slaps in front of everyone. Before anyone could start recording the embarrassing event on their phones for Twitter, the side chick said to the wife, “Up until now I only had his d*ck, from now own I’m going after his heart”

Shortly after like magic the man moved out of his matrimonial home o & set up shop with the side chick! Lobatan!

Walahi the fear of Lagos side chicks is real!

So when all this is said & done is it worth confronting the side chick? Have you ever confronted your man’s side hoe? Sidechicks have you ever been confronted by wifey?

LET’S TALK!!!

By CHETA NWANZE

Today, August 15, is celebrated as VJ Day in the UK, the day Japan surrendered and ended World War II. Today’s #HistoryClass is about a largely ignored group of warriors in that war, who fought in Asia. The Burma Boys. Many thanks to Olly Owen of Oxford University for prompting today’s #HistoryClass which references the work of Barnaby Phillips, Jon Latimer and Shojiro Ida.

https://www.barbaric.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/858x536xburma_3037130k.jpg.pagespeed.ic.CbmroZBMUD.jpg

There are two parts of today’s #HistoryClass, a summary of the Burma campaign, and a biography of a Nigerian soldier, Isaac Fadoyebo, who was involved. Burma became a part of the British Empire in the 19th Century as a part of British India, but was excised in 1935. By that time, the Burmese wanted the Brits out, so when Japan attacked in January 1942, they didn’t have a shortage of Burmese insurgents, led by Aung San to help them. On 16 January 1942 a Japanese battalion occupied Victoria Point, at the southern tip of Burma, giving them their first airfield inside the country. Tavoy fell on 19 January, isolating the garrison of Mergui, which had to be withdrawn by sea. This gave the Japanese control of three airfields, and allowed them to launch the first air raids on Rangoon. On 8 March, as the last British train left Rangoon, the Japanese marched into the undefended city from the west.

During the rest of March both sides prepared for the inevitable Japanese attack north into the heart of Burma. Serious fighting resumed in late March and on 26 April the British began the retreat to the Indian border. Between December of 1942 and May 1943, the Brits, deployed troops from India, Burma, Gambia, the Gold Coast, Kenya, Nigeria, Rhodesia, Nyasaland and Uganda, with help from China and the US. Their tentative attacks in this period were known as the Arakan Campaign. During the Arakan Campaign, the Allied High Command was overhauled, the new leader was the charismatic Louis Mountbatten, a relative of the King, who’s influence obtained much needed air support for what now became the 14th Army. The Japanese, aware that the Brits had gained strength, tried to end the campaign in early 1944 with an assault into Assam, aimed at capturing the key towns of Imphal, capital of the state of Manipur, and Kohima. Another Japanese attack was made simultaneously in the Arakan.

For the first time the since 1942, the British stood firm.

Early in 1945, 14th Army continued to advance, no longer in the jungle but in the open plains of upper Burma. Mandalay was recaptured in March, and the British crossed the Irrawaddy before heading south. In the Arakan, the Japanese were forced out of strong positions before Rangoon was retaken on 3 May. However much British face was lost in the Far East as a result of the defeats at the hands of the Japanese, African and Indian troops had lived in the mud with their British comrades, and had realised that they were all human, so the stirrings of independence continued even after the was was over. Aung San, who sided with the Japanese earlier, switched sides when it was clear that they were losing. Despite his assassination, possibly aided by the Brits in 1947, Burma gained independence in 1948. He was the father of Aung San Suu Kyi. In a future #HistoryClass we’ll talk about independence from British rule in South-East Asia, an event which was replicated in Africa a decade later, and to which soldiers of the 14th Army contributed great moral strength to.

In Britain itself, the 14th Army became known as The Forgotten Army because of the humiliation earlier by the Japanese. 100,000 African soldiers fought for Britain in Burma.

Isaac Fadoyebo joined the Royal West African Frontier Force in 1942 at age 16. In 1943 he was deployed to India, then ordered to in February 1944, join the fighting in the Kaladan Valley in Burma. He was the victim of a Japanese ambush a month later. As his comrades were cut down around him, a bullet struck Fadoyebo’s right leg, shattering the femur, while another round penetrated his side. Soaked in blood, he lay helpless and in agony. Surrounded by corpses, Fadoyebo passed out. When he recovered consciousness, Japanese soldiers with fixed bayonets were standing nearby. A British officer, Capt Richard Brown, was murdered for trying to treat Fadoyebo’s wounds.

Surprisingly, the Japanese did not finish off the Nigerian, probably because they believed he was about to die anyway. Yet Fadoyebo clung to life, encouraged when it became clear that there was another survivor, an injured soldier from Sierra Leone called David Kargbo.

Then, out of the rainforest, some Burmese villagers, Rohingya Muslims who supported the British against the Japanese, came to their aid. They treated Fadoyebo’s wounds and brought food and water. Later, the two Africans were concealed in a rudimentary jungle shelter. For nine months, Fadoyebo lay in squalor and agony. His leg was so mangled that the white femur was exposed and maggots ate his wounds. One villager, Shuyiman, took pity on the two African soldiers and hid the fugitives in his own home alongside his family. Had the Japanese discovered this, Shuyiman would have been executed together with his wife and children. Japanese patrols passed through the village of Mairong, but the Africans were never found. In December 1944, British soldiers liberated the area and discovered Fadoyebo and Kargbo. They had survived for nine months behind enemy lines.

Fadoyebo wrote his autobiography, but in SAP Nigeria of the 1980s, it wasn’t published. Eventually, it was published by the BBC in 1989. He died in 2012. Fadoyebo, like our first military Head of State, Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi, fought for Britain in World War II. May we never forget them.
