Of all the places you want to get your Phd, it is Australia that you decided to pitch your tent. The current stance of the present government in Australia is anti- immigration and I believe that if you are current with news you might have decided against applying to a school there. Anti immigration in most of these white dominated countries is based on one single issue: racism. Ask the New Zealanders about migrating to Australia and they will tell you its easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for their citizens to get to Australia. Because of mass migration and racism, the Australians moved their Nigeria and West Africa Visa section to South Africa and later back to Australia.


My Advice is dont insist on Australian Phd. You can go to UK Ivy League Colleges such London School of Economics and Political Sciences, Cambridge and Oxford to do your Ph.D without facing immigration problems. Much as their education is world class, you can find the same in USA and Canada if you care to search.

We don't have the luxury of choice in these matters. I am very sure the op has been applying to all the countries you mentioned including Australia. Unfortunately, Australia where immigration is currently a hot topic offered him a fellowship. Hopefully, things eventually work out.

As some have already suggested, in conjunction with your prospective supervisor, defer your admission giving this reason and then reapply for the visa with well written letters that will allay their fears of you not returning. The nnpc gmd is speaking this way because he knows he is speaking to people who don't know much about how these things work. Only the results of these prospecting will tell whether there is crude there or not. So hopes shouldn't be high for now. Am in such delima right now. And am so worried. I was lucky to get a good PPA and it being helpful financially even though I work more than am nbeen paid. Try to get retained. If not retained, get another job even if it is teaching or set up a business with your savings and remain! Never go back home. Speaking from experience!

As a Niger Deltan, I am expected to strongly oppose the decision. The school brings in federal presence to the region, jobs and monthly federal allocation. Other regions will oppose this move if the school were to be in their region.

As a patriotic Nigerian, the school is another avenue to share money. Everything about it right from acquisation to employing to admitting is/will be fraudulent. The school will end up being like one of those our numerous institutions that hands out certificates without education.

Nigeria has no business opening new schools at the moment. This because we currently have too many sub-standard schools and funds are slim. Expand and upgrade existing schools. We will be better of that way.
