In a positive approach and a relative response to the devastating punches the Ebola outbreak has meted on four West Africa nations, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation announced Wednesday that it has pledged $50 million to help combat the epidemic. The money will be made available to United Nations agencies and international organizations involved in the response effort. It will enable them and national governments to purchase "needed supplies and scale up emergency operations in affected countries," The foundation said in a news release, the grant will also be used to develop therapies, vaccines and diagnostic tests to treat patients and prevent further transmission of the often-fatal disease. "We are working urgently with our partners to identify the most effective ways to help them save lives now and stop transmission of this deadly disease," said Sue Desmond-Hellmann, CEO of the Gates Foundation. "We also want to accelerate the development of treatments, vaccines and diagnostics that can help end this epidemic and prevent future outbreaks." U.S. and World Health Organization officials have warned that the Ebola virus is spreading faster than health workers in Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria and Sierra Leone can work to contain it. WHO estimates released Tuesday put the West Africa toll from Ebola at more than 2,200 deaths and 4,200 infections, primarily due to a surge of new cases in Liberia, the Associated Press reported. WHO officials estimate that another 20,000 people could become infected with the virus, which has a mortality rate that can approach 90 percent. Read more: www.niftyrules. |
Judge Thokozile Masipa sitting this Thursday started handing down her judgement in the trial proceeding of Oscar Pistorius, finding him not guilty of the first count charge (murder). Below Herein, are some key quotes from the judge so far: On the state’s case: “The state clearly has not proved beyond reasonable doubt that the accused is guilty of premeditated murder.” “Viewed in its totality, the evidence failed to establish that the accused had the requisite intention to kill the deceased, let alone with premeditation.” “The accused therefore cannot be found guilty of murder.” On Pistorius's actions: “He took a conscious decision, he knew where he kept his firearm and he knew where his bathroom was. This is inconsistent with lack of criminal capacity.” Read more: www.niftyrules. |
Every day around sunset, dozens of residents of this small Lebanese Christian village on the border carry their automatic rifles and deploy on surrounding hills, taking up positions and laying ambushes in case Muslim extremists from neighbouring Syria attack. “We all know that if they come, they will slit our throats for no reason,” said one villager as he drove through the streets of Qaa, an assault rifle resting next to him. For months, Lebanese Christians have watched with dread as other Christians flee Islamic extremists in Syria and Iraq, fearing their turn will come next. Fears multiplied after militants from Syria overran a border town last month, clashing with security forces for days and killing and kidnapping Lebanese soldiers and policemen. Now, for the first time since the Lebanese civil war ended in 1990, Lebanese Christians are rearming and setting up self-defence units to protect themselves, an indication of the growing anxiety over the expanding reach of radical Islamic groups. Across the Middle East, Christian communities as old as the religion itself feel their very survival is now at stake, threatened by militants of the Islamic State group rampaging across Iraq and Syria. In Iraq, thousands of Christians have fled their homes after they were made to choose between leaving, converting to Islam or facing death. For the first time in centuries, Iraq's Ninevah region and the provincial capital of Mosul have been emptied of Christians. After they left, the militants spray-painted their houses with the letter “N” for “Nasrani” — an archaic term used to refer to Christians — marking the homes as Islamic State property. Jennimma: Is it godly to dance worldly steps in church?Madam! Their ain't nothing like worldly dance. All forms of dancing is welcome inasmuch you're praising God. What will you say about king David, who danced and went nude all unto the fact that he was praising God. And also check out what befall the daughter of saul (his wife) who made jest of him. From my own side, I still insist all forms of dance is welcomed in the church. Mind you, am also a Christian. |

Against the chaos and ongoing imbalances in the Nigeria Football Federation, the president of the Nigeria Football Federation, Alhaji Aminu Maigari, has formally resigned his position on the NFF Board with effect from August 26, 2014. “The Bauchi-born administrator resigned as NFF President on August 12, 2014 to pave way for a peaceful resolution of the crisis that engulfed the football federation shortly after the 2014 FIFA World Cup,” in a letter from the Special Adviser on Media to the Honourable Minister of Sports, Patrick Omorodion, said. California public health officials on wednesday declined to disclose the identity of a Sacramento patient who is being tested for the Ebola virus after returning from one of the West African countries affected by the growing outbreak of the disease. They refused to reveal the patient's gender, age, which West African country he or she had traveled to and how the exposure may have happened, citing federal health privacy laws. But they said the patient, who is being kept in isolation at Kaiser Permanente's South Sacramento Medical Center, developed symptoms during the 21-day period, it takes the deadly disease to incubate after returning from Africa, warranting being tested. Still, health experts said they believe the likelihood the patient actually has Ebola is slim. National, state and local health authorities are exercising "an abundance of caution" to protect the public's health. "While we should be aware of the disease and its symptoms, it is unlikely Ebola poses a significant public health threat at this time," said Dr. Gil Chavez, deputy director for the Center for Infectious Diseases and state epidemiologist at the California Department of Public Health, during a telephone news conference Wednesday. Just faith in God will do that which seems impossible. Believe in the fact that he's not a man that he should lie will set him into action and move the unmovable. Remember ask and with a believing heart, you shall receive. This is a poem by me on faith. Faithfully read. AND FAITH Is it an ability to believe the unseen Travel via the mind where you've never physically been Is it the things hope for Or evidence of things not seen Faith has gone far beyond Far above our daily crumbs It is the positive mind for positive request Backed with a mind to have it Faith Is setting the table When the store house is short of vegetable Faith Is having the spoon, fork in its place and plate at the center when nothing is cooking in the pot Faith Is getting fired And you saying "i am hired Or tired and you saying am stronger" stolen and you saying, you've gotten Even when it seems farther Faith brings closer When labelled looser Faith says am a winner Have you said cant to your faith He's faithful a father to make you enjoy the holyghost bathe Feel free to ask of it from the father He is very near and hasn't gone yonder. Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Lagos Chapter, has appealed to the Federal Government to reverse its directive and withdraw its circular sacking resident doctors in the country. The Chairman of NMA, Dr Tope Ojo, made the appeal at a news conference in Lagos on Saturday. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, had on Aug.13, issued a directive terminating the residency training for doctors until further notice. Ojo said, government should engage the association in dialogue to provide lasting solution to the problems in the health sector. Relating to his words he said, sacking the doctors will not yield positive result and will instead further aggravate the problems in the sector. "NMA condemns in totality the alleged presidential directive via the Federal Ministry of Health suspending residency training in the country. "It could be reminisced that such action was taken in 1985 during Gen. Muhammadu Buhari's regime. The Lagos State Government also sacked some striking doctors in Lagos on May 7, 2012. "These actions had not yielded positive results and can never stand the test of time. "Government should show commitment in resolving the current impasse with the NMA rather than resorting to punitive measures that will only further aggravate the already deplorable situation", he said. Ojo said that the current strike would continue and that the immediate reversal of the sack remained the only condition to resume talks with government. He, however, advised the affected doctors against collecting any sack letter or signing any register opened in any hospital. Dr Olusegun Akinwotu, the President, Association of Resident Doctors, Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Yaba, said that such sack would have negative implications on the sector. Akinwotu said that it would have huge effect on the operations of the hospital, as 50% to 70 % of the doctors in government hospitals were resident doctors. "It will affect medical schools as they will remain shut because these doctors contribute about 50% to the training of medical students. "All major surgical operations will remain cancelled in all teaching hospitals because the consultants by default perform all major surgeries with the assistance of their resident doctors. "It might even escalate the current Ebola scourge because the majority of the volunteers involved are resident doctors." Dr Babajide Shared, the Secretary of the association, said the sack of resident doctors would affect patients negatively. Shared said that there would be increased list of awaiting patients, delay in surgery appointments and even delay in attending to emergency cases. "The consultants need the resident doctors to effectively carry out the task of patient care." Relating to the response of the US president, Barak Obama at the US- Africa summit held at Washington DC when african leaders requested for an experimental drug. President obama replied african leaders thus; "We've got to let the science guide us and I don't think all the information is in on whether this drug is helpful. The Ebola virus, both currently and in the past, is controllable if you have a strong public health infrastructure in place." The President 's action on the NMA's agitation according to some Nigerians could led to more outbreak and even the demise of more patients when the doctors are not there to attend to them. To most Lagosians and many Nigerians, a sack letter is not good this time around. www.niftyrules. |

Tazmode: This is bad. High probability of spreading the virus by fleeing patientsAm afraid, you're right. And as at now the situation has really got out of hand cos some of the items looted are stained with blood. At times I even wonder, what the hell is wrong with this people. |
Liberian officials fear Ebola could soon spreadthrough the capital’s largest slum after residents raided a quarantine centre for suspected patients and took items including blood-stained sheets and mattresses. The violence in the West Point slum occurred late Saturday and was led by residents angry that patients were brought from other parts of the capital to the holding centre, Tolbert Nyenswah, assistant health minister, said today. It was not immediately clear how many patients had been at the centre. West Point residents went on a “looting spree,” stealing items from the clinic that were likely infected, said a senior police official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief the press. The residents took mattresses, sheets and blankets that had bloodstains, which could spread the infection. Liberian police restored order to the West Point neighbourhood, which is home to an estimated 60,000 to 100,000 poor Liberians. Health officials say they fear the looting incident will spread Ebola infections in the capital, Monrovia. Ebola has killed 1,145 people in West Africa, including 413 in Liberia, according to the World Health Organization. In East Africa, the Kenyan government took steps to prevent the disease from spreading. Kenya will bar passengers travelling from three West African countries hit by the Ebola outbreak, closing a debate in East Africa's economic powerhouse about whether the national airline was exposing the country to the deadly disease. KanwuliaJara: A "GOD" of SACRIFICES and his MERCIES that endured for ever!!!!!Its really serious my brother, you've got to see emotions of families and relations displayed to the public like wares meant for sale. |
The collective pain was overwhelming at the Marikana Commission on Wednesday, two years after the killings, the relatives of the victims took the floor and spoke of good men, justice, and finding a substitute for the unique. They spoke of men with names, faces and families, what they left behind, what can’t be replaced. By NICOLSON. “I am Andile Yawa, Cebesile Yawa's father . I live in the Eastern Cape. My son was killed in the Marikana tragedy. He was very respectful and humble and he took care of his family very well. He liked sports a lot and he was liked in the village.” Yawa held his fist against his face, had a sip of water. “I was forced to stop working due to my ill health. Therefore, my son took over my job in the mine. He went to Marikana in 2007. As far as I know Cebesile rented a shack in the informal settlement Karee. He phoned us regularly, probably three times a week. He would come back home to the Eastern Cape twice a year, during the Easter and Christmas holidays to visit us. Cebesile took over my responsibilities. He was our only breadwinner.” Yawa was one of the relatives of the 44 people killed in Marikana in the week to 16 August 2012 who spoke at the Commission on Wednesday. Family members of police officers, security guards and mineworkers all spoke, united in their lasting grief, demanding justice, and struggling to provide for their families. Good men, lost. “Cebesile phoned me on Wednesday 15 August 2012. During the conversation, he informed me that workers were on strike because of a wage dispute. He told me that he and other fellow workers from other shafts were at the koppie. They had invited the employer to come and listen to their grievance and their demand for a wage increase,” said Yawa, dressed in a grey checked coat and yellow polo shirt. The relatives spoke of their last phone calls. The calls that didn’t go through. On a screen were the pictures of the deceased. Thobisile Zibambele even told his wife Nokuthula his bank details, as though he knew what wasgoing to happen. Many relatives wanted their husbands to come home. They’d seen the reports. But it was a strike for rights, a strike to earn something decent for their hard work that could provide for their dependents. Good men, police security, mineworkers, all were taking care of their families. Yawa’s son took care of his child four brothers, a sister and parents. “We observed that my son had a bullet wound in his abdomen and other wounds on his left shoulder. We went to the koppie and shack to collect his spirit. See more: www.niftyrules. |
Millions of ordinary Africans, facing panicky quarantine orders and cancelled flights, are beginning to pay a heavy price for the world’s alarmist myths about the Ebola crisis. Far from the centre of the Ebola outbreak, airlines and governments are imposing restrictions on African travellers, ignoring the advice of medical experts. Korean AirLines became the latest example on Thursday, suspending all of its flights to Kenya, a country that doesn’t have a single Ebola case and is located 5,000 kilometres from the danger zone. Other fear-based reactions are multiplying. Nigerian athletes were placed into quarantine at the Summer Youth Olympic Games in China, prompting them to quit in protest. Ghana is proposing a ban on all “public gatherings.” Zambia is banning entry to anyone from Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea and Nigeria, the four West African nations where Ebola is present. British Airways and Emirates have suspended flights to some West African cities, and Ivory Coast is blocking ship cargo to the three hardest-hit countries, raising fears of food and fuel shortages. The heavy-handed travel bans are provokingsharp criticism from experts at the World Health Organization and Médecins sans frontières (Doctors Without Borders). Theflight cancellations are an overreaction that could make the situation worse, hindering the efforts to help Ebola-affected regions, the WHO says. “WHO disappointed when airlines stop flying to West Africa,” the organization said in a tweet on Thursday. “Hard to save lives if we & other health workers cannot get in.” Stephen Cornish, executive director of MSF Canada, said the suspension of African flights will heighten the risks of Ebola spreading to other countries, since it will become more difficult to send medical and epidemiological specialists to the Ebola zone. South African Police Minister Nkosinathi Nhleko will investigate whether President Jacob Zuma is financially liable for any part of the 215 million rand ($20 million) spent on upgrading security at his personal residence in Nkandla. Nhleko will report to cabinet on his findings, Zuma said in a report to Parliament today. The cabinet will also review security policies for the executive "with a view to setting parameters for expenditure and implementation,” Zuma said. Public Protector Thuli Madonsela, the nation's corruption ombudsman, said in a March 19 report that Zuma, 72, unduly benefited and failed to safeguard public resources used in the renovation of his home in the eastern KwaZulu-Natal province. Madonsela recommended Zuma repay some of the money. Zuma has denied wrongdoing and a ministerial team that investigated the project said in December the president had no role in authorizing the expenditure. See more Www.niftyrules. |
CAPE TOWN, South Africa — It started when the small Indian Ocean island of Seychelles refused entry to Sierra Leone's soccer squad, fearing that the deadly Ebola virus would arrive from West Africa along with the players. The decision by Seychelles health authorities two weeks ago gave its team no choice but to forfeit the game against Sierra Leone and withdraw from qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations, the continent's main football competition. "We cannot let down our guard," Seychelles health commissioner Dr. Jude Gedeon said after Sierra Leone's players were prevented from leaving Kenya for the flight to the Seychelles. Some had already boarded their plane before being informed they wouldn't be allowed to make the flight. The Confederation of African Football was powerless to act. Sierra Leone and Liberia, two of the four soccer-mad West African countries affected by the worst Ebola outbreak ever recorded, have now stopped all football in their countries. Health officials say there is a lethal risk in allowing people to gather in large groups. Togo said it would not travel to Guinea, another Ebola-affected country, for a game at the start of the final round of Africa Cup qualifying in the first week of September. That forced CAF to relocate that match. The disease has no licensed vaccine, and has killed over 1,000 people in West Africa at the World Health Organization's latest count and has spread through three countries and into a fourth, Nigeria. Controlling it takes priority over sport. But if other nations follow the lead of Seychelles and Togo, as many as 18 games in the final qualifying competition starting next month could be affected. The qualifiers determine which teams get the 16 spots in the tournament, which is held every two years. The 2015 Africa Cup will be held in Morocco in... see more: www.niftyrules. |
What seems to be a fear today for the residence of the northeastern region of Nigeria still remains the case of the islamic insurgent, and even the issue of the missing chibok school girls seem to have enhanced more fear and gradually led to the flee of most resident at Chibok and other villages nearby. It is no longer a news that the nation is at the mercy of some islamic insurgent by the name ‘Boko Haram’, neither is what now seems to be a global issue, the abduction of the 276 school girls on an evening of the 14th of April 2014 a latest development in Nigeria and even to the entire world. The recurrent cases of the deadly Ebola virus has now grown and exceeded its range and another case recorded in Lagos ones more this monday . The Minister of Health, Prof Onyebuchi Chukwu, said today that another Lagos nurse has tested positive to the deadly Ebola Virus Disease. The development came 22 days after the first case of the virus was recorded. The minister explained that the newly married nurse was among those that had direct contact with the late Liberian man, Patrick Sawyer, who imported the disease to Nigeria. see more: www.niftyrules. |
