Kaduna SSG kidnapped, captors demand N40m - He is not kidnapped; we sent him on an assignment - Govt From Hassan Ibrahim, and Chris Agbambu with Agency Reports - 23.09.2009 THE captors of the Secretary to the Kaduna State government, Mr. Waje Yayok, are asking for a N40 million ransom for his release, his relations said on Tuesday. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that Yayok was kidnapped on Monday night at Manchok, his hometown, in the Kaura Local Government Area, where he had travelled to for the Sallah break. The Commissioner of Police in the state, Alhaji Tambari Mohammed, confirmed the kidnap, but said that it was regarded as a case of a missing person for now. Mohammed told NAN on telephone that the police were on top of the situation. A member of the Yayok family and the Danmasanin Manchock, Malam Shehu Abui, also confirmed that Yayok was kidnapped on Monday night by unknown persons. Abui, a former Editor-in-Chief of NAN, said the kidnappers were demanding N40 million as ransom from the state government before they could release Yayok. Kaduna State governor, Dr. Namadi Sambo, told newsmen shortly after his visit to the Emir of Zazzau, Alhaji Shehu Idris, that he would speak later in the day. But later, in a a statement signed by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Public Affairs, Alhaji Umar Sani, the government said it had only sent Yayok on an assignment to the southern part of the state with a large sum of money when the alleged kidnap report started making the rounds. The statement read: “we have been inundated with enquiries as to the whereabouts of the SSG of Kaduna State, Mr. Waje Yayok, over a case of abduction. “These enquiries necessitated that we respond appropriately to these rumours in order to set the records straight. “While it is true that the SSG was on official assignment to the southern part of Kaduna, we are yet to get in contact with him over his supposed location. We believe he will get in contact with us soon. “However, the gravity and the intensity of the rumours require us to take steps to ensure that everything is in order. The security agencies have been detailed of the place, the nature of the assignment and all his contact details to enable them trace his whereabouts and douse the tension created by such rumours. “Members of the press, in line with the internationally accepted standards that a person cannot be declared missing until after 48 hours and because the rumours started this morning we shall address you properly very soon on the matter. “However, the essence of this is to keep you informed on the situation, by tomorrow (when) the picture will become clearer.” Meanwhile activities continued in Kaduna but some government officials were seen in groups discussing the sad development. Yayok’s house in Banawa, Kaduna, is currently being guarded by men of Operation Yaki, a special security outfit, and other security agencies. Speaking on the issue, Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Emmanuel Ojukwu, said that the SSG had gone out on Monday night to distribute his daughter’s wedding cards, but did not return. The wedding is scheduled to hold on October 10. He said that on Tuesday morning, some unknown callers called his family, claiming that they had kidnapped the SSG, and demanded for a ransom of N40 million. The force spokesman, however, revealed that the police had spread their dragnet all over Kaduna State to track down the kidnappers. According to him, “the police high command has ordered serious stop and search of vehicles in Kaduna while other searches are still going on.” |

TEN YEARS OF DEMONSTRATION OF CRAZE On the 29th of May, Nigeria marked 10 years of transition to civil rule, within these period of 10 years there has been display of straight or what I will say insanity by the power brokers. Nigerians has witnessed the barbaric style of leadership by those politicians that come into power in the bid to enrich themselves, living behind the promise they made in the days of campaign. The pains and venom drove through my bone marrow as an unemployed graduate each time I see politicians, I mean people that got the grace to put things right after decades of backward movement initiated by the military. But all they do is flexing of powers and strength rather than flexing of developments. Within these 10 years of political insanity in Nigeria, these are some invents that proved and confirmed the eccentric nature of our democracy. The coming of Obasanjo looks like a light at the end of a tunnel, but did not take time to know that it was just the same old game plan. He came with some developmental master plan and a map of navigation which was greatly accepted by all and sundry, not knowing that they were the same political gimmick to drive away our mind from his original intents. What do we have to celebrate for, is it the celebrated Oputal panel that could not achieve the said aims and objectives rather it was used to open up old wounds and celebrate Babangida super, mega and unlimited power, the two watch dogs (EFCC or ICPC) that were mainly used to oppress oppositions, and used to fight those that were not subjective to General Obasanjos opinions and plans, the several killings of individual, which Chief Bola Ige Fell victim of or ethnic cleansing in the Niger delta, I mean the Odi village barbaric killing by the so-called men that are meant to protect the people now turned to be their killer, and the killing of the Tiv people during the clash of the Jukun and Tiv people in Zakibiam in the year 2001, all these attacks were all in the bid to inflicts injuries on the opposition. These absolute flexing of strength paved way to continues suffering the masses receives from the people they voted for. The electoral system is well designed in such a way that with or without our vote, they get an easy ride to the top. Elections in Nigeria is generally characterises by violence and most time don’t reflects the views and conscience of the populace, the unpopular candidate will now have his/her way. A popular joke goes does “there was this discussion with an American, a Chinese and a Nigeria, the Chinese man in show his country rule of law said If there is an election in China you get the result the second day, the American burst in to laughter and affirm the fact that if election takes place in the US you have the result before the close of the day but the Nigeria man shout them down and said in Nigeria you get the result of the election before the actual voting“. The 2007 election tribunal nullification of some result is a manifest of the style of selection I will say we do in Nigeria. The rescheduled election in ten local governments in Ekiti state greatly open up can of worm in our electoral system. While countries like Ghana and South African held violence and malpractices free election, what a shame. Our Education system is nothing to write home about, I remember when I was in the secondary school our English master was a Ghanaian, can you imagine a foreigner not an English man but a co west African coming down to Nigeria to take up teaching responsibilities what a shame. Education in Nigeria is not giving its own due when it comes to funding, and the little money injected are used by political faithful. Why because their children are schooling abroad and those within the coast of Nigeria are in the private institutions. So the state of our education is not their headache. We now generate a lot of applicants; a lot of countries showcase their talents, while we try to number the millions among us that are jobless. I went for an aptitude test not too long ago, I almost bust into tears, because of the numbers of the applicant, that took my mind to different vices and troubles caused by youth of this generation, a lot took up arms and ammunitions to make ends meets, as am writing this article, I form part of those that prefer to continue in the search and apply for ones that will not attracts a lot of applicants and try to avoid the ones that will need a letter from a big politicians from the ruling party. Even jobs in the Military and Paramilitary are given to children of the privilege. What is our joy if for ten years we could not bring back the lost glory. The Basic needs of the masses could not be meet up to 5%, which is most disgraceful to us as a nation, and at the end we are clamouring for a permanent sit in the United Nation, a nation that could not feed herself nor protect the interest of her citizenry is now seeking for a responsibility to overseas her continental region. What a shame. Our Power system had a been in a rotating situation, its just a pipeline used by our politicians to pipe away tax payer's money, I don’t want to dwell on these because it’s another big issue on it’s own, which manifested through the arrest of some house members. Food and security is another thing we are short of. The recent invasion of the creeks by hungry zombie, killing the old, young women and helpless children. Let me just keep mum, because if I should make a statement, it will look as if am against a certain section of the nation. Truly it was a ploy to cleanse the Niger delta region so as to have full access to the oil. But only the creator has power to cleanse not man. An extract from Baba Fela’s Music “Demo crazy Crazy demo, Demonstration of craze, crazy demonstration, if e no be craze, why for Africa” it’s truly an eccentric display of talents, which the National Assembly was the major visual screen of the shame. My fellow Nigerians what do we have to show for the ten years of civil rule? What do have on our score card? What do we have to boast of? Where are the manifests of good governance? What do we have to show for ten years? Has Nigerian felt the real dividends of democracy? Why the celebration? Is it not another means for siphoning the nation? Please if you’ve not been to Lagos state, go there and see they are really enjoying democracy. We are at the back seat amidst committee of nations, TEN YEARS OF WASTE, let’s sit back and make the right decision. When next you want to vote, vote the true democrats. Boko Haram sect plans more attacks, says Prisons boss National News Sep 22, 2009 Members of a radical Islamist sect who staged an uprising in northern Nigeria, in which no fewer than 800 people died, are preparing further attacks, a top security official said Monday. Kano State prisons chief, Mr. Lawan Abubakar, said the Boko Haram sect are regrouping to attack prisons in Kano City holding 58 suspected sect members. The 58 are facing charges of illegal assembly, breach of public peace and assault after a recent crackdown on the group, which sparked the bloody uprising in several northern states last July. Fifty-three other Boko Haram suspects have been charged with treason in neighbouring Bauchi State. “From security reports at our disposal, the Boko Haram sect is regrouping in Kano and members of the sect are hatching a grand plan to attack prisons in the state to free their colleagues arrested during the violence,” Abubakar told reporters. He said the reports indicated the sect was regrouping in Gezawa village, 30 kilometres outside Kano. The detainees were arrested in a police raid on their hideout in Wudil, west of Kano, following a dawn attack on a police station in which three officers were wounded. “We have reinforced security around the prisons where the Boko Haram (suspects) are being kept with more policemen and vigilante members,” Abubakar said. However, police in Kano denied any knowledge of sect members gathering in the state. “We are not aware of such reports and there is nothing to suggest the Boko Haram is planning any comeback. We are on top of the situation,” said Kano State police spokesman Baba Mohammed. The arrested suspects are being held mostly in the Central and Goron Dutse prisons in Kano. |
PDP shops for Ogbulafor’s replacement - Shortlists 3 - Maduekwe, Anyim top list Taiwo Adisa, Group Politics Editor - 22.09.2009 AHEAD of the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) which comes up on Thursday, power brokers in the party are said to have shortlisted three of its chieftains as possible replacements for the embattled National Chairman, Prince Vincent Ogbulafor. Ogbulafor has been in the eye of the storm for sometime now, following allegations of non-performance said to have been levelled against him by members of the party’s national caucus. The chairman had faced removal last April ahead of the special national convention of the party, but he managed to stave off the removal bid at the time. Sources said that the names of a former Senate president, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Chief Ojo Maduekwe, had been consistently mentioned since the Ogbulafor saga began. The national chairman is also the subject of a current legal tussle in Abuja over allegations that he partook in an alleged N104 million misappropriation, when he served as Minister of Special Duties in charge of Economic Matters during the Obasanjo administration. A human rights group, the Human Rights Justice and Peace Foundation (HRJPF), led by one Comrade Chidi Nwosu, had obtained the order of an Abuja high court presided over by Justice M. G. Umar in a bid to compel the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to prosecute Ogbulafor over the alleged N104 million scam. Besides, some concerned PDP elders had also written to President Umaru Yar’Adua asking that the chairman be probed over the alleged purchase of a N400 million private property in Abuja, recently. The group, in its petition, said that the chairman had been leading an executive that had been unduly involved in a display of wealth in recent times. The group claimed that the ICPC had earlier indicted the national chairman in its probe into the N104 million matter and asked the president to probe into reasons for the suspension of Ogbulafor’s prosecution by the ICPC. While President Yar’Adua is yet to make his opinion public on the said allegations, Ogbulafor was quoted in the media as saying that his detractors should go to court if they were sure of their facts. The suit by HRJPF is said to be a response to Ogbulafor’s challenge to defend himself in court. President Yar’Adua had summoned the leadership of the party two weeks ago, during which he demanded the holding of a mid-term convention. The convention is said to be aimed at principally determining the fate of Ogbulafor who is also accused of leading a divided executive committee. Besides, a source said that Yar’Adua was intent on exerting his authority on the party ahead of the 2011 election, such that he would be in control of the machinery of the party. Sources said that the president appeared to have lost faith in Ogbulafor. As a result of the development, the names of Maduekwe and Anyim have often been mentioned, with a source adding another Presidency official as the third candidate. The president is said to be considering the three names, while he is set to make his decision known on the eve of the NEC meeting. A source said that some people had been selling the candidature of Anyim to the president of late and that some others had zeroed in on Maduekwe. But in a fast move to save his job, Ogbulafor had, last week, petitioned the president, naming some party bigwigs as those responsible for his plight. Ogbulafor was also said to have been joined in the battle to save his job by the governor of Ebonyi State, Mr. Martin Elechi, who was said to have written a similar petition in defence of Ogbulafor. It was gathered that President Yar’Adua had acted on the said petitions but a source said that the president did not appear to be taking them seriously, as he was bent on stamping his own identity on the party ahead of the 2011 polls. “You will remember that Ogbulafor was an emergency creation at the 2008 convention. He was not in the picture originally and now that he is facing a series of allegations, the president is open to discussing his future in the party, especially as the man is said to have become the mouthpiece of some governors,” a source told the Nigerian Tribune, on Monday |

Gov Aliyu warns religious extremists off Niger National News Sep 22, 2009 By Wole Mosadomi Minna – The Niger State Governor, Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu has warned religious extremists, who hide under religion to cause disaffection between the people of Niger State and the state government, to steer clear of the state. Governor Aliyu sounded the warning when he addressed hundreds of people from Minna emirate led by the Emir, Dr Umar Farouk Bahago at the Minna Durbar 2009, as part of the Eid el-fitri celebration. Aliyu was particular about incidences of Islamic preachers using inciting utterances and preaching to malign the state government in order to create disaffection against the government. He was, apparently, reacting to criticisms that trailed his recent deportation of Darul-islam Islamic religious sect from Niger State and the circulation of leaflets in order to incite the people against the state government. However, he said he will have no place for such people in his territory. He accused members of the Daru-Islam sect of wife swapping and isolation from other fellow muslims, describing them as too evil to be accepted by not only Islam, which they claim to proclaim, but the government and people of Niger State, pointing out that the enclave which started with just 18 people grew to over 5,000 within a spate of 17 years. “Religious extremists, like militants in their characteristics do not consider the extent of damage they do to the society which they also belong in carrying out their destructive agenda,” Aliyu stated, pointing out that government has put in place policies that would check mate the activities of such preachers. |

Mistaken Identity Assailants beat pregnant woman to pulp , mistook her for another woman target •Victim loses pregnancy From NWABUEZE OKONKWO, Onitsha Monday, September 21, 2009 •The victim Photo: Sun News Publishing More Stories on This Section Two persons have been arrested by police operatives in Anambra State for their alleged involvement in battering a pregnant woman which was said to have resulted in her having miscarriage. The suspects, whose names were simply given as, Chigbo, Okwudili, among others, according to a source, had on August 1, 2009, armed themselves with matchets, cudgels and wood, swooped on their victim, Mrs. Agatha Ikeh, and allegedly beat her black and blue. The incident took place at Afor Nnobi market. According to the source, policemen later swung into action, arrested and detained the suspects. On interrogation, they claimed they mistook the victim for another woman they wanted to attack. The State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Emeka Chukwuemeka who confirmed the incident told Daily Sun in a telephone interview that he was yet to have the detailed report of the incident. Meanwhile, the victim has forwarded a strong-worded petition to the State commissioner of police, alleging that the police at Nnobi Division were too sluggish in investigating the matter. In a three-page petition, written on her behalf by her lawyer, Ambrose Emejue, Mrs. Ikeh and her husband, Bernard demanded immediate re-arrest of the suspects and re-investigation of their alleged attack on the victim. The petition said: “In view of the rampaging effects of these gruesome crimes viz: kidnapping, armed robbery, cultism, militancy, murder and violent crimes (as in this case), we demand for immediate re-investigation of this callous and brutal attempt to kill a poor, helpless woman, whose pregnancy had been aborted by the identified miscreants”. “We, therefore, view the sluggish investigation conducted by the Nnobi Police Division as a conspiracy and demands immediate re-arrest of the culprits for attempted assassination, assault occasioning grievous bodily harm, inducing abortion and stealing with violence,” they insisted. He also attached doctor’s report to the petition, which was also copied to the United Action Against Corruption and Justice International, media and the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Nnobi. The petitioners claimed that the victim had gone to Afor Nnobi market to sell goat and cocoyams before the suspects attacked her. The petitioners contended that the suspects, who wielded matchets and other dangerous weapons, dispersed the market women, who were shocked by their violent attack on the woman. They allegedly subjected her to a harrowing experience, tore her clothes to shreds and abandoned her in the open market, naked and in the pool of her own blood and with multiple lacerations. The petitioners further stated that when the husband of the victim was alerted about the attack, he rushed to the scene only to see his wife soaked in blood, with shreds of clothes tied on her waist. He was said to have reported the matter to Nnobi Police Station. It was after their arrest that the suspects claimed that it was a case of mistaken identity. The lawyer said because of the degree of injuries on the victim, she was rushed to the General Hospital, Onitsha while the hospital management referred her to Concord Hospital (Center for fertility management), where she had been on admission since August 12. He expressed concern that notwithstanding the foregoing, the police at Nnobi granted the suspects bail the following day, in tandem with their earlier boast that the police would not prosecute them, even if the victim dies. Even when they were issued notice to appear before in Magistrate Court on August 17, they did not show up. Rather, they reiterated their resolve to kill or maim her, if the family insisted on prosecuting the matter. The lawyer said the police at Nnobi had not given them any reason for refusing to arraign the suspects, or made any attempt to ensure the treatment of the victim, whose hospital bill is still unpaid till date. |
