Yar’Adua’s Minister for Information, Dora Akunyili, created a fiasco at the Federal Executive Council meeting in Abuja today as she submitted a memo calling on the FEC to face up to the reality of Yar’Adua’s incapacitation. She expressed the view that they should urge their principal to transmit a letter to the National Assembly to facilitate a smooth transition. Predictably, the memo, in which she warned that the FEC had taken the Nigerian people for granted for too long and should do the right thing by urging the president to step down, was shot down by hawks in the cabinet, who did not permit it to enter the agenda.

An FEC source told Saharareporters that although Mrs. Akunyili's brave memo was rejected by the hawks, a “cowardly” majority of the members actually supported her position and some of them even congratulated her after the meeting, which lasted only 90 minutes.  After the meeting, Mrs. Akunyili briefed the media about the downward “review” of Federal Capital Territory land rates, but did not say anything relating to Yar’Adua’s health.

The atmosphere after the FEC meeting was reportedly tense, and the ministers hurriedly left the Aso Rock Villa to avoid speaking to the press. Last week, the Attorney General of the Federation, Michael Aondoakaa, claimed after the FEC meeting, in response to a 14-day Federal High Court order that lapses this Friday,  that Yar’Adua was fit to continue in office

Who were the so called hawks? who presides over FEC meeting? The Hawks or the Vice President?

Jonathan is just not worth his onion. How long can Jonathan continue to be passive?

He is simply not ready to lead.

What folks fail to realize is that these guys are only hawks to the extent that Yar'adua is there. Right now there is no proof that Yar'adua is fit to be in office. If Jonathan was bold he can lead the efforts to now uphold the constitution.

And if Jonathan stands his ground, these so called hawks will have no choice than to shut up until they are able to produce Yar'adua to come and reclaim his seat.

In fact Jonathan can raise his game and reconstitute the cabinet. People are just afraid of nothing in this country.

Is there anyone who wants to honestly say that if this was OBJ 70days on a sick bed in a Foreign land. Atiku wont be running this country by now?

Jonathan just does not know that he is an elected Vice President not anybody's personal assistant or boyboy

How does what anybody makes of Dora Akunyili's reputation matter more than the dire National Security Risk we have found ourselves?

That means they will kick her to the curb soon. She is the only person in his cabinet to muster courage and say this and I applaud her for it. I also feel sorry for Jonathan because he has been cajoled by this situation even though the powers beyond him are the real reasons. I feel sorry for him.

First things first, she should resign her appointment as minister, beg Nigerians to forgive her for all her lies during her tenure, then she can start spilling her guts.

Forgive her for what exactly?. Did she steal your money or what?. [b]What crime did lady Dora commit in Nigeria
?

Okonjo Iweals served under Obasanjo and resigned when she couldn't take it; Engnr Mrs Leslie Obiora served under Obj as science minister and resigned when she couldn't take it. Ezekwesisli, I think did the same and only Dora remained. What did she do exactly besides serving under Yaradua as a minister?. If you must crucify her, why not do the same to other women who served under Obasanjo?.

The truth remains that women rarely agree to sit tight amidst corruption. Check the list of the ministers who resigned in the last two dispensations, they are all women.

Re: Dora Akunyuli Asks Yardua To Step Down! by proudly9ja(m): 1:58am On Feb 04, 2010
Strong indications emerged on Wednesday that the Minister of Information and Communications, Prof. Dora Akunyili, wants President Umaru Yar’Adua to hand over power to Vice-President Goodluck Jonathan until his return from Saudi Arabia.

Our correspondents reliably gathered that Akunyili presented a memo containing her request to the Federal Executive Council at its meeting in Abuja. The council, which by the provision of Section 144 of the 1999 Constitution, is empowered to initiate the hand over process, however, rejected the memo.

A top Presidency source told one of our correspondents that her colleagues and other FEC members were divided on her request to “face reality and prevail on President Yar’Adua to hand over to the Vice-President,” thereby making her to withdraw the memo with a promise to re-present it at next Wednesday’s meeting of the council.

Akunyili’s action came barely seven days after FEC had passed a resolution claiming that Yar’Adua was not incapacitated to continue in office.

The council’s position provoked national outrage and debate with many concerned citizens going to court over Yar’Adua’s health saga.

The President left the country on November 23, 2009 for Saudi Arabia for treatment at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital in Jeddah.

FEC’s position came against the backdrop of a directive by the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court Abuja, Justice Dan Abutu, to it to make public a resolution on Yar’Adua’s health within 14 days.

Akunyili, in a telephone interview with one of our correspondents, confirmed that she, indeed, tabled a memo on the President’s health to the council.

She, however, declined to discuss the details of the memo or the motive behind her action.

Akunyili said, “Yes, I presented the memo to the council. Somebody must have called and told you that. I presented the memo.”

Asked the content of the memo, she replied, “I will not be able to discuss the content now. It was read but not debated and subsequently withdrawn. That means it was not taken. So, I can’t discuss the details with you now.”

On whether it meant that the memo would be taken at the next meeting, she stated, “I will represent it because I stand by whatever I said in the memo.”

Our correspondents gathered that immediately after Akunyili’s memo was read and rejected at FEC, tempers rose as a good number of ministers, led by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Michael Aondoakaa, shouted her down.

A source disclosed that Pro Jonathan ministers were so shocked by the fiery reaction of the Pro Yar’Adua ministers, although a few latter met with Akunyili to congratulate her for her courage.

Evidence that Akunyili might have disagreed with the Council’s resolution on January 27 had shown in her appearance in the front page photograph of many newspapers, Aondoakaa, addressed the press on the decision taken on Yar’Adua.

The pretty-looking 55-year-old Akunyili wore a weary look and appeared evidently bothered.

Aondoakaa, widely believed to be one of the cabinet members preventing Yar’Adua from handing over power to his deputy, Jonathan, as Acting President, declared at the January 27 briefing that it was not mandatory for him to do so.

Meanwhile, the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress and some opposition leaders have concluded arrangements to hold a crucial deliberation next week on the prolonged absence of the from the country.

A top labour leader told one of our correspondents on condition of anonymity on Wednesday that the politicians planned to join forces with the organised labour to intensify the growing demand for Yar’Adua to hand over power to Jonathan.

Some of the top politicians expected at the meeting are former National Chairman of the People Democratic Party, Chief Audu Ogbeh; National Chairman of the Democratic Peoples Alliance, Chief Olu Falae; and a former governor of old Kano State, Alhaji Abubakar Rimi.

Our correspondents learnt that the main agenda of the meeting planned for next week in Abuja, was the vacuum created by the failure of the President to hand over to his deputy before leaving for medical treatment in Jeddah.

It was further learnt that the NLC had scheduled a meeting of the leadership of congress for Friday.

The acting Head of Information of the NLC in Abuja, Mr. Iduh Onah, said that the meeting of the National Administrative Council of the body would discuss “the state of the Nigerian nation.”

I am prepared to forget all 'wrong doings' of Dora if this story is true and if she goes ahead to re-present it next week.

Dora must not resign. In the current status quo, she cannot be sacked, so she can continue the battle from within and widen the cracks among FEC members.

Nigeria; good people, failed nation.

Fashola for president!!!
Dora for VP

No long thing

Just my 2 cents

The impression she created at NAFDAC was just a smokescreen.
she has found her true level amongst hypocrites and charlatans.
When Adedibu said she was begging him to intervene on her behalf for a ministerial appointment, everyone laughed him off now the truth is known.
There is no proof to back up the report, every one is saying 'informed sources' said.I am think the story might have been planted by her aides.
Most nigerians think that the real Dora was the NAFDAC one and that she is presently acting out of character, i believe the opposite.
did she just wake up from her slumber?
where has she been these past 70 days?
after defending the ineptitude of this sick govt in public, why does she have to voice her new found sanity in secret?
they are all liars and hypocrites and Dora is no different.
Re: Dora Akunyuli Asks Yardua To Step Down! by marvix(m): 4:37am On Feb 04, 2010
There is no reason to castigate Dora this is how it shld b done in a democracy Nigeria is buildin its own democracy.
Like I hav always insisted dis is not abt Yaradua and his love 4 d rule of law. The law did not mandate him to hand over weneva he has an headache and in our constitution the VP has no other role but to take charge once d president is not around that is if d president woke up on a wednesday and has a headache the FEC meetin does not hav to be cancelled the VP just takes over the proceedings.
Dora has made a good move the issue is Jonathan,he presides over d FEC so he can decide that d memo be deliberated and like I hav said b4 d only person or persons who should be worried abt the absence of d president is 1st the VP and then the members of the FEC so if Jonathan does not see a reason y he should take over then who are the NLC or Politicians or Pastors, has Jonathan complained that he is not allowed to run the country have the ministers complain that they can't work as there are pending approvals which the VP cannot approve, so mayb finally they hav gotten to that point and Dora has taken it to the next level by askin the FEC to deliberate on the issue so the question of her resignation does not come in its only cowardice that wld make her resign she has no sins to ask for forgiveness she is on track.
I believe dat Nigerians must be patient and allow them resolve this issue the FEC cannot and should not be stampeded into takin decisions no outsider can be more bereaved than the bereaved

What did Dora do? How did She go wrong?
Is it not normal that she challenged something wrong?
Which other Nigerian minister has had the guts to do the same thing? Has She not always reacted to every move to discredit Nigeria? Was her rebranding campaign not genuine? which other minister has done that?
We need people like Dora in a Sovereign Eastern country, not in a dead place like Nigeria, where people criticise anything good that comes from an Easterner.
That was how you fools shouted down soludo, now many of you are jobless! Rubbish!

I have to say I am disappointed with some comments on this forum about Dora's steps. Instead of us to be praising her for this courageous move, some people are calling her a liar and other names. She probably took the most difficult decision that no other official in Yardua's cabinet could take and we are abusing her. Do you know that even the VP does not have the guts to make this decision. Imagine you work for a company as an MD and you are on salary arrangements. Your CEO has been out for 73 days. How many of you as an employer collecting Salary from your CEOs company can actually wake up and write a memo that your CEO should hand over since he has been on vacation for 73 days. She has risked a political career and she has risked her life. Nigerians, applaud her,
