Housewife or Working Woman? by kodewrita(m): 1:37pm On Jun 30, 2005
This post is the natural result of some posts that I have read.

Men/boys: Which do you prefer, housewife or a 9-to-5er [working woman]?

Women/girls: If you had a choice and you could stay at home with all your needs catered for, would you take such an option or opt for a job (however stressful)?

My bias would already be evident to anybody reading the post. Seun, maybe we need a vote on this one.
Re: Housewife or Working Woman? by Seun(m): 2:25pm On Jun 30, 2005
Kodewrita, I don't want a housewife, neither do I want a woman who's working 9 to 5 for somebody else.

I imagine that we're both going to be running a very successful family-owned business. I imagine that since we own the business either of us be able to spend more or less time at work depending on the needs of little "junior and princess". So if the doctor says stay at home for X months and take care of your newborn baby she will be able to do so.

So I have aded a third option, titled "family business", to the poll.

Re: Housewife or Working Woman? by opeyemi(m): 5:55pm On Jun 30, 2005
I hate "housewifing". The idea irritates me.

I like women working but not in that description. I will prefer her working for the family (family business). But you see, if the situation warrants her working outside the family runs, no matter the qualification she has, she will submit to be a teacher. At least being a teacher will give her some time to cater for the family. She can at least go late and come back early whin the situation calls. She may even stab the jab at times that it couldnt be avoided. Being a teacher will also help groom the children because she can train them better in terms of academics and morals.

Of course I will be wealthy so the issue of her working for money will not be the case but just doing something to keep her out of the house.

Housewifery used to be a thing of the past. In the days of old, the only thing men knew how to do best was turn thier wives into baby making equipment - a lot of women really wanted to be identified as somebody else apart from Junior's mum or 'Wilson's wife'.

But thank God for the now. Any man who wants a full-time housewife is certainly living in the past.

Whether or not you want your wife to be an employee or be involved in a family business is entirely up to the two of you. However, no woman should be forced to give up her career for a family business, men take note of this. In as much as its a family business, the decision to actually resign from employment to participate in such should be respected.

Well as for me. I would prefer my wife to be semi housewife in relation to my "MEALS" but that doesn't mean we cannot have maids or house helpers etc. The most important thing is the meal has to be from her (if she is strong and able), except in the condition that maybe she cant cook. hahha.

Well a working lady, works for me smiley I mean you wouldn't want your wife to be complaining of boredom, especially when it comes to seeking for attention. So i would say a working woman, with a house touch, would be perfect for me.
Re: Housewife or Working Woman? by Nobody: 9:50am On Jul 01, 2005
This might come as a suprise to a lot of people, but there are a lot of girls out there who wouldn't mind being a housewife. I'm talking about graduate chics, who've dealt with the hassle of university and are happy to let someone else do most, if not all the work while they cater to domestic affairs.

Personally, I believe in sharing all duties. While some fellas believe they are immune to housework, that's a no no in my book. We will both work to secure a future for ourselves and we will both come home and deal with the issues at home. Afterall marriage is supposed to be a partnership.

I can't even imagine myself, depending on ma man financially!

Why cant you depend on your man financially? That, i think is pride.

Remember, men want to be in charge! If you wont allow your man to spend on you, he will spend on an outsider - which would you rather prefer?

You could be working, have a career, contribute financially in the home and still depend on your "man"

Men want to prove they are the men in the home - abeg allow them o! Otherwise na you go lose.

Re: Housewife or Working Woman? by kazey(m): 3:47pm On Jul 02, 2005
Easy for you guys to say, as if jobs are lying on the streets for you to pick them, or even business are just something you just get involved in and you make a huge amount of money. Or even its that easy for a husband and wife to be working together.

I think we are deviating from the main issue here. "Housewife or working woman? and why ?" not "Tufiakwa" "Olon Maje" or even "Allah ya Sawake" or whatever. We are in the real 3d world. how possible is it, for a husband and wife to work together? How many homes do that? Are we watching too many hollywood movies?

In the typical or even "Elite" Nigerian home, I would say almost all the families, where there is working woman, the woman does the house wife's job too, alone in fact (dual task). Its really rare and I am yet to find the husband sharing with the wife, in terms of the duties at home.

Maybe it might be possible, that you find new married couples sharing the jobs, but with time, the lady would be the only one left in doing all the odds, especially if the man has a mother, that visits once in a while. Or if I might ask? in your house, does your dad go to the kitchen? Tell us? Culture plays a very important vital role in this issue. Its left for the guy to make the decision, I think the lady doesn't really have a say in relation to whether the guy has to participate in the house chores, if she wants a happy family. Men have their pride, and it would always be there.

And to all those who are thinking of running a family business with their partners, what then happens if as it always happens in Naija, something adverse to the business outside your control occurs? Natural disaster, Goverment legislature come to mind. When the whole family income is coming from one source, the Financial analyst in me rejects it. It is definitely not sound reasoning.

Yes I would love for my wife to work, but not an 8-5 thing. I know how it was growing up. I know the sort of scrapes we got into while still in secondary school and I know if it wasnt for the fact that some women in the neighborhood were full time house wives or teachers who got home early, God knows how I'd have turned out today.

I tend to be a realist, one of the parents have to spend more time at home. If my wife earns more than me, then I would do the school runs. That is the reality of the life we live in.

As for me, I want both grin. But seriously, I'd like ma woman to work and if possible close work by 4p.m so that she can go home and prepare my dish.
Now you see the reason why I said both.

When at work = working woman
When at home = housewifey wink

Re: Housewife or Working Woman? by Magie(f): 9:28am On Aug 26, 2005
For me, life is how you make it! I believe that both Hubby and Wife are the family leaders and thus averyone has to play his/her role to fulfill the family needs. The familiy has to grow Socially, Economicaly and Educational wise. So being a complete housewife will make a woman to be dormant and can't be creative.

I hate being at home all the time just cooking and washing bowls!!!1 angry
Re: Housewife or Working Woman? by allonym: 1:01am On Nov 01, 2005
and what exactly is wrong with being a housewife?

If a woman wants to stay at home and be a full time mom - she's called a housewife.

If you're telling me that nobody wants to be a housewife, you're telling me you're not Nigerian. Most of you nigerian women are indoctrinated from birth that your duty is to pop children and take care of them. This is one of the lasts places i would expect most people speaking out against being a housewife.

I will be graduating in May 2006 with my bachelor's degree in chemistry and then going on begining fall 2006 to begin my PhD in Organic Chemistry ... but guess what I would still love more than anything else (and if you knew my friends and my SO to ask them they will tell you that I LOVE my organic chemistry and being in my research lab) to be a stay at home mom to care for my children and be there for my husband when he comes home from work with his meals prepared and all of that.. but hey that's just me..

If I were to work I would rather take a job with less pay that would allow me to be home everytime my husband and kids are as opposed to even making twice as much and not being able to spend that much time with my family...

Most men I know would not mind that mindset at all. cheesy

The only problem is what to do if the first child is delayed for months or years, and you've made up your mind to be a full-time mom and housewife. What then?

i just made a mistake and pressed housewife, to which i have always been against. i didn't spend 30 years of my life schooling to then stay at home and look after kids. also i want to be independent. i don't want the man to think his so big just because he's the one providing the money. i also have my pride!
Re: Housewife or Working Woman? by allonym: 9:46am On Nov 10, 2005
i'm going to be spending many years at school and I have my pride too. But, if my wife tells me she wants to work and make all the money, I'm going to let her do it. Staying at home with my kids is great. Working on my own research at home or at some lab is great too.

Just because your husband makes a lot of money, does it mean you need to be a housewife? As far as I can tell, its not like anyone is being forced to be one. It is a choice, and as a choice, there is no significant pro or con between the two if you are in a position to make it.
Re: Housewife or Working Woman? by nicetohave(m): 10:40pm On Dec 15, 2005
There is nothing wrong with being a housewife. If your family setting permits it, but i have also learnt that housewife(ry) is not a profession. It is not even biblical! A woman should work to make her husband proud and her family comfortable.
