Bukateria ("Buka") Food! by jogego(m): 4:02pm On Jul 19, 2005
I have had an overpowering urge for the past week to eat proper buka food. Not the type you get at New cross, I mean the proper amala that as they are preparing it, sweat is falling into it with proper abula( ewedu plus gbegiri) and ogunfe meat.

I love buka food. There was a time, that every saturday saw me at Shitta eating amala. My mother never could understand cos I refuse to eat amala at home. But apart from the amala, I love bukateria rice. In school there was one rice we used to eat, with orisiri meat. It was something else.

I do know that If I go back home, one of the first places am going to go is one amala joint on the way to my house. Every morning about 7 am, you see them killing the Ogunfe and damn does your mouth water.

I chop buka food sotay I chop one special rice for Ikenne, amala for Ibadan.

Feel free to comment and share your buka experiences

Unfortuntaley i do not have many buka experiences.

But You may want to try Tomi's kitchen on Deptford High street if you  still feel like it - i think their cooking is close to the real Nija one.

Sorry oh...

But some things are impossible to duplicate...

It's the atmosphere... grin
Re: Bukateria ("Buka") Food! by jogego(m): 8:01pm On Jul 19, 2005
I agree with cimonJ, the atmosphere just cannnot be reproduced. For one, anybody cooking over a gutter would be closed down in an instant. Dablessed, you have really missed. Can you imagine two women, no make that sweaty women, roing amala or guing iyan with the sweat from their brows even adding extra vitamins to the food?

I think I know that place on deptford high street. At lest it might be the one I saw one time like that.
Re: Bukateria ("Buka") Food! by kazey(m): 11:10pm On Jul 19, 2005
When you say Buka all i remember is my first and last time of eating in one, it happened in Osogbo *Osun state, and the more i recollect all the pain i under went, it scares the creeps out of me, "I got food poisoned !!", and from then on, i kept a safe distance from anything with the name Buka.
Re: Bukateria ("Buka") Food! by Seun(m): 11:22pm On Jul 19, 2005
Jogego, this is the first time I am hearing that dripping sweat from the body of a cook adds extra vitamins to the food. grin

But I can see where you're coming from. You've been eating "white man's food" for so long that even unhygienic food at home now appeals to you!
Re: Bukateria ("Buka") Food! by jogego(m): 1:58am On Jul 20, 2005
LOL!! Seun so you wan talk say u no dey chop buka food? Abeg dont let them hear you call it unhygienic oh!!!! And all those bukas for central london where you will balance on bench with gutter running underneath.....oh the memory.

@Kazey, sorry oh!! You be proper butter. If you be paki you go chop the thing and your body go acclimitise one time.
Re: Bukateria ("Buka") Food! by CimonJorr(m): 4:30am On Jul 20, 2005
Even without the "gutter" atmosphere...

One definitely gets nostalgic about sitting down with a plate of dry fish pepper soup and a bottle of star... or a plate of Nkwobi [just in case the pepper soup is not available..]

Socializing and sololloquizing with people you've never met before in your life.. all under the umbrella of "beer palour gist"...

Asking *or torturing.. rather* Mama Chi Chi for that plate of hot "tortoise"...

[I miss them dayz... I miss the fun... cool]
Re: Bukateria ("Buka") Food! by hotangel2(f): 7:19am On Jul 20, 2005
I am happy i also have memories.

I love buka foods...but i don't see myself eating them again.

the buka food i can remember eating was the last one i had. We went to Eko IDumota with my cousins, and we were as hungry as hell. We sat down there and i was looking at those women sweating and cooking and the Amala was steaming and the smoke...(oh..i smell the atmosphere). We ate, Amala , gbegiri and ewedu with pomo and so many meats. Oh it was sweet. My best meal ever...yes, buka food. I can see the picture of how i was licking my hands that day..and oh wait.. you then order two 5 naira "pure water" ((yeah---very pure rolleyes)) from the passers by. Oh it was sweet....and the pomo was strong that i spilled it on my dress...and i didn't even bother because the food was going down!!!!! grin grin

Oh buka foods are sweet....Anyone want to enjoy buka food, bye Amala gbegiri and ewedu. I never knew gbegiri was sweet (that was the first and last time i ate it, i am willing to eat it again---i heard it's beans ).

Oh there's this other day where my aunt bought buka rice home, the rice was with beans and the stew was sweet. I ate and ate till there was no grain of rice on the plate... (oh you thought i was going to say till i could eat no more uh?? Hell NO) I finished the whole plate.

I must agree i love buka foods...but the thing is I didn't eat much buka foods while i was in Naija, but from the memories i have, buka foods are great, but like i said ealier, i don't see myself eating them again.

Please try amala and gbegiri and ewedu..it's sweet.

Hnmmm Idumota, damn Hotangel, you brought some more memories. I used to work somewhere on Nnamdi Azikiwe street, and there is this car park on Martins street( I think) where there are some women who sell Saro rice. That is jolloff rice that has been cooked till its somehow burnt. I remember my Manager didnt like us eating it in the office cos the smell lingers.

But the minute she steps out, we send someone to buy it and rush it b4 she comes. Once she enters, she goes " Talo ti je rice jijona ni ibi" Who has eaten burnt rice in here.

I think the rice is sold in leaves. Remember the leaves used for for making moin-moin

And who remembers the dundun and dodo - fried yam and plantain? The sauce for that thing is hnmmm outta this world
Re: Bukateria ("Buka") Food! by hotangel2(f): 8:22am On Jul 20, 2005
Jogego.. You make me cry. I ain't taste that kinda rice before.. but talk about dun dun and akara and plantain. cry cry why these memories now. I tried frying dundun here and it didn't work. it tasted like poti. cry

Thumbs up Nairalanders! I've never experienced so much excitement and unison on any topic on the forum like this.

Call it buka or mama put, nothing compares to it! That is why Nigerians abroad spend so much to obtain something close to the real thing they miss back at home.
Re: Bukateria ("Buka") Food! by sade(f): 5:43pm On Jul 20, 2005
