Foreign Affairs / US Marine Osprey Aircraft With 4 Soldiers On Board Missing In Norway by NigeriaNawa: 12:34am On Mar 19, 2022
Search and rescue teams in Norway are looking for a missing American MV-22 Osprey aircraft that was taking part in a large NATO military exercise in northern Norway Friday.

There were four Marines aboard the aircraft, Norwegian officials said.

We can confirm an incident has occurred involving a Marine Corps MV-22B Osprey aircraft," Maj. Jim Stenger, a U.S. Marine Corps spokesperson said in a statement. "The aircraft was conducting training in Norway as part of Exercise COLD RESPONSE 22 at the time of the incident."

Stenger said the incident remains under investigation.

Currently there are 3,000 U.S. Marines in northern Norway participating in the Cold Response 22 NATO exercise that is described as one of the largest NATO exercises since the end of the Cold War. There are 30,000 troops total participating in this year's exercise.

Held every two years, the exercise was planned long before the Russian invasion of Ukraine and helps to train multinational NATO forces in how to operate in the Arctic.

Norway's Armed Forces and the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre of Northern Norway issued statements Friday confirming they were conducting a search for a missing Osprey aircraft that had failed to land at its destination.

"The Osprey belongs to the U.S. Marine Corps and is taking part in the Norwegian military exercise Cold Response in Norway," said the statement from Forsvaret, Norway's armed forces. "The aircraft has a crew of four and was out on a training mission in Nordland County, northern Norway on Friday 18 March 2022."

The statement said the Osprey was en route to Bodø, where it was scheduled to land just before 6 p.m. local time and was reported missing at 6:26 p.m. local time with its last known position being south of Bodø.

Search and rescue aircraft were launched but weather conditions in the area are described as "challenging and are expected to get worse." An apparent crash site south of Bodø was located from the air three hours later.

"Due to the weather conditions, it has not been possible to enter the site from the air," said the Norwegian armed forces statement. "Police and rescue crews are now on their way into the area."

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.

Foreign Affairs / Chinese Carrier Sails Through Taiwan Strait Hours Before Biden - Xi Call by NigeriaNawa: 12:51pm On Mar 18, 2022
TAIPEI, March 18 (Reuters) - A Chinese aircraft carrier sailed through the sensitive Taiwan Strait on Friday, Taiwan's Defence Ministry said, just hours before the Chinese and U.S. presidents were due to talk.

China claims democratically ruled Taiwan as its own territory, and has over the past two years stepped up its military activity near the island to assert its sovereignty claims, alarming Taipei and Washington.

A source with direct knowledge of the matter, who was not authorised to speak to the media and spoke on condition of anonymity, told Reuters the carrier Shandong sailed close to the Taiwan-controlled island of Kinmen, which sits directly opposite the Chinese city of Xiamen.

"Around 10:30 a.m. the CV-17 appeared around 30 nautical miles to the southwest of Kinmen, and was photographed by a passenger on a civilian flight," the source said, referring to the Shandong's official service number.

The USS Ralph Johnson, an Arleigh Burke guided missile destroyer, shadowed the carrier at least partly on its route. The Shandong did not have aircraft on its deck and sailed north through the strait, the source added.

Taiwan also sent warships to keep an eye on the situation, the source said.

Taiwan's Defence Ministry, in a brief statement, confirmed the passage of the Shandong but gave no details other than to say its forces have a "full grasp" of what China's ships and aircraft do in the Taiwan Strait.

U.S. Navy spokesperson Lt. Mark Langford said the Ralph Johnson had "conducted a routine Taiwan Strait transit March 17 (local time) through international waters in accordance with international law". He did not elaborate.

Chinese Foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian referred questions to the Defence Ministry - which did not respond to a request for comment - but said the Shandong has a "routine training schedule".

"We should not associate this with the communication between the heads of state of China and the United States. You may think it is too sensitive. What is sensitive is you, not the Taiwan Strait," Zhao told reporters in Beijing.

'PROVOCATIVE' TIMING

The sailing happened about 12 hours before U.S. President Joe Biden is due to speak to his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping. read more

The source described the timing of the Shandong's movement so close to that call as "provocative" and that it was unusual it sailed during daylight hours, with previous missions happening at night.

Last April, China's navy said a carrier group, lead by the Liaoning, the country's first aircraft carrier put into active service, was carrying out routine drills in the waters near Taiwan. read more

Taiwan is already in a heightened state of alert due to the Ukraine war, wary of China taking advantage of the situation to make a move of its own, though there have been no signs Beijing is about to mount any kind of military strike.

Lo Chih-cheng, a senior lawmaker from Taiwan's ruling Democratic Progressive Party called the Shandong's transit a "very provocative message" when countries in the region are already alarmed by the war in Ukraine and hours before the Biden-Xi call.

"Tensions across the Taiwan Strait won't rise sharply because of this, but it will likely cause neighbouring countries to raise their military alert level," he told Reuters.

China says Taiwan is the most sensitive and important issue in its relations with the United States. Washington has no formal diplomatic ties with Taipei, but is Taiwan's most important international backer and arms supplier.

Taiwan rejects China's sovereignty claims and has repeatedly vows to defend its freedom and democracy.

Kuo Yu-jen, a security expert at Taiwan's National Sun Yat-sen University, said the Shandong was likely to be on its way up to northern China for next month's celebrations marking the founding of China's navy.

"It was carrying no aircraft and had no frigates" accompanying, he added.

The Shandong is China's newest aircraft carrier, commissioned in 2019.

In December 2019, shortly before presidential and parliamentary elections in Taiwan, it sailed through the Taiwan Strait, a move condemned by Taiwan as attempted intimidation.

Taiwan's air force also scrambles aircraft almost daily to see off Chinese warplanes flying into Taiwan's air defence identification zone, mostly to the southwestern part of the strait at the top end of the South China Sea.

Foreign Affairs / Panicking Russian Troops In Disarray As Ukraine Army Ambushes Their Convoy by NigeriaNawa: 12:35pm On Mar 18, 2022
Russian invaders were ambushed by Ukrainian soldiers in another display of tactical humiliation for Vladimir Putin's army.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dNp5byiXPuk

Footage filmed at the start of the war but only recently seen for the first time showed Russian soldiers cowering behind tanks and trees at the side of a road as bullets rained down on them.

Moscow has suffered multiple defeats because of 'inept' tactics that have baffled military experts.

It came as a British military expert said Ukraine was 'humiliating' Russia and 'wiping the floor with them in terms of world opinion'.

Prof Michael Clarke, the former chief of defence and security think tank the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), said the Russians were 'making almost every tactical mistake it is possible to make'.

'They look like forces that were completely unprepared, that hadn't thought through what a major campaign might look like,' he told BBC Radio 4's Today programme.

He said: 'The Ukrainians are stalling the Russian advance in all areas and even operating now quite effective counter attacks.

'The Russians are losing a lot of equipment and troops.'

Meanwhile, a British Army veteran told MailOnline: 'What you see in [the video] is contact right, so they're all piling out of a vehicle, you can see on camera that some soldiers are squatting behind tyres and are grouped in.

'This is what we'd call a "snap ambush", so an unexpected ambush from single direction.

'What the Ukrainian army have probably done is set up a kill zone.

'It could be the Ukrainians have just decided to take pot-shots, but what's more likely is they've got intel that vehicles are going up road and they've planned an area where they're going to engage them.

'You try to make an area where the enemy is going to struggle to get out of, in this case there are banks to the left and right so the Russians are stuck on the road

'Russians are maybe getting out of their vehicles because they're scared of anti-tank weapons the Ukrainians have.

'There isn't a lot of commands from corporals or sergeants.

'You'd expect the first people out of the vehicles to be shouting locations so other soldiers know where they're being contacted from and where to return fire.

'They're not going forward, sometimes you do that because there's going to be IEDs or something like that to make the situation to worse – but they're not going backwards either.

'Grouping together isn't something you'd normally do. What you'd do is define where fire is coming from and spread yourself out in a line to make it harder for incoming fire to group against

'If I was them, I would have lined up men along the ditch to the right, then you can start shooting back.

'Nobody seems like they know what they're doing. It looks like a game of paintball. They seem lost.

'Could be that they're young, could be that they're old. Could be that they're scared.'

Ukraine has a NATO level command and control system that has been built up with the help of the Alliance since the annexation of Crimea in 2014.

One Western security source told i News: 'There has been plenty of operational resource going in to strengthen the capability of Ukrainian armed forces since [the Crimea annexation].

'And there are some grounds for believing that we are seeing the benefits of that on the front lines in recent days in the form of a stuttering Russian advance.'

Prof Clarke said an attack on a plane repairs factory in Lviv this morning made it 'clear the Russians are going for the infrastructure that is keeping Ukrainian aircraft in the air'.

Andriy Sadovyi, mayor of Lviv, said two Russian missiles launched from the Black Sea - likely by warships - had destroyed an aircraft repair facility and a bus garage close to the airport, but there were no immediate reports of casualties because both facilities were shut down.

Four incoming missiles were shot down, he added.

Lviv has largely been spared the devastation wreaked by Russia on cities further to the east but is now being dragged into the fighting as Putin's advance grinds to a halt - forcing his generals to launch long-range strikes on cities in an attempt to weaken their defences and terrorise civilians. Kyiv was also struck in the early hours.

Smoke rises over the city of Lviv, in western Ukraine, after two Russian cruise missiles hit the city early Friday - destroying an aircraft repair workshop at the airport and a nearby bus garage

Advanced Western weaponry and tactics are helping the Ukrainian army to inflict heavy losses on the Russian army despite their inferior numbers, military experts revealed today

Javelin missiles use a 'curveball' shot - approaching their target from above - which makes them especially deadly against tanks which have less armour on the top. They also have two warheads which are designed to overcome 'reactive' armour that Russia uses

Russia's invasion is grinding into its third week with heavy losses for Moscow, prompting the US to warn that Putin will increasingly resort to nuclear threats in order to keep the West out of the conflict because he will no longer be able to rely on the strength of his conventional forces - which will be weakened in the fighting.

Ukrainians quickly figured that the cumbersome vehicles' reliance on the road system, combined with low infantry numbers to protect flanks, made the convoys vulnerable to attack if they could be halted by road blocks.

This has given rise to the highly successful tactic of blocking roads and bridges before launching ambushes from fields and forested areas on the convoy, picking off soldiers unable to escape.

Alleged war criminal Putin has increasingly ordered his troops to target airfields in a bid to ground Ukraine's air force.

Russia has caused more than £47.7billion ($62.6billion) of damage to Ukraine's infrastructure since the start of the war, including £8.29billion ($10.9billion) to civilian and military airports, according to the Kyiv School of Economics.

Ukraine's air force has been using Turkish-made drones to carry out pop-up attacks with a lethal effectiveness that has surprised Western military experts

The Bayraktar TB2 unmanned aerial vehicles, which carry lightweight, laser-guided bombs, normally excel in low-tech conflicts, and Turkey has over the years sold around 20 to Ukraine

So far an estimated 100 of Russia's 170 battalion tactical groups have been deployed inside Ukraine, armed with tanks, artillery and air defence systems.

But Putin's plan for them to cross the Ukrainian border and launch a rapid attack on key cities such as Kharkiv, Kyiv, and Mariupol have exposed the forces vulnerabilities - which are now being exploited by Ukraine.

Convoys of tanks and armoured vehicles, sometimes up to 75 strong, have been seen moving down main roads and fighting for control of major junctions rather than in sweeping moves that include small towns and areas of countryside.

Politics / Russian Military Shells Mosque Full With Women And Children - Unknown Casualties by NigeriaNawa: 3:15pm On Mar 12, 2022
LVIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russian forces pounding the port city of Mariupol shelled a mosque sheltering more than 80 people, including children, the Ukrainian government said Saturday as fighting also raged on the outskirts of the capital, Kyiv.

There was no immediate word of casualties from the shelling of the elegant, city-center mosque. Mariupol has suffered some of the greatest misery from Russia’s war in Ukraine, with unceasing barrages thwarting repeated attempts to bring in food and water, evacuate trapped civilians and to bury all of the dead.

The Ukrainian Embassy in Turkey said 86 Turkish nationals, including 34 children, were among the people who had sought safety in the mosque of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent and his wife Roksolana. Opened in 2007 and modeled after a mosque in Istanbul, Turkey, the white-walled mosque and its towering minaret were proudly advertised as a popular scenic draw by city authorities before Mariupol became a target of Russian barrages.

NATO is a combination of 30 countries, is it shameful for such numbers of country to defeat 1 country Russia? I wonder why you keep saying this as if we needed to hear that. But you can't fight me and decide for me which weapon I should use to fight back. Russia has only nukes to fight NATO so let NATO too keep far from Russia if they don't want nukes

NATO is an alliance to protect weaker European countries.

The USA or UK or France will destroy the Russian army in less than a week. It's not about numbers, its about training and technology.

NATO defeated the Taliban comprehensively. They left Afghanistan because it was no longer popular back home and it became very expensive to maintain.

Let us look at some facts ;

NATO conquered the capital Kabul in less than a week and lost about 10 soldiers. Over the 20 year occupation they lost about 2,000 soldiers ( from all countries ). Compare this to the 15,000 Russia soldiers lost over a mere 9 year period in Afghanistan.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has warned that a Russian attack on the supply lines of allied countries supporting Ukraine with weapons and ammunition would be a dangerous escalation of the war raging in Eastern Europe, CBC News reported.

"The allies are helping Ukraine uphold their right for self defence, which is enshrined in the UN charter. Russia is the aggressor and Ukraine is defending itself. If there is any attack against any NATO country, NATO territory, that will trigger Article 5," Stoltenberg said in an interview with CBC News.

Article 5 is a self-defence provision in NATO's founding treaty, which states that an attack on one NATO member is an attack on all 30 member countries.

"I'm absolutely convinced President Putin knows this and we are removing any room for miscalculation, misunderstanding about our commitment to defend every inch of NATO territory," Stoltenberg said.

The Secretary General said there is a clear distinction between supply lines inside Ukraine and those operating outside of it.

"There is a war going on in Ukraine and, of course, supply lines inside Ukraine can be attacked," he said.

The Secretary General emphasized that an attack on NATO territory, on NATO troops, NATO capabilities would be an attack on NATO.

Stoltenberg said NATO's message to Russia is that "they have to end the war, that we will continue to support Ukraine and that we continue to impose unprecedented sanctions."

India accidentally fires a missile into Pakistan: Delhi apologises for 'regrettable' maintenance error that led to weapon blasting into its nuclear-armed sworn enemy

• India said it accidently fired a missile into Pakistan on Friday
• It was carrying out maintenance when the missile fired across the border and into Pakistan due to a 'technical malfunction', said the defence ministry
• India called the bombing 'deeply regrettable' but said no lives were lost
• Both India and Pakistan are nuclear-armed and share a history of border tension

India's military accidentally fired a missile into Pakistan, New Delhi's defence ministry said on Friday, claiming that routine maintenance made the missile go off because of a 'technical malfunction'.

The missile landed in 'an area of Pakistan', the defence ministry said in a statement, adding that a high-level inquiry had been ordered.

India called the bombing 'deeply regrettable', but added it was a 'matter of relief that there has been no loss of life due to the accident'.

Both India and Pakistan are nuclear-armed states, sharing a long history of tension along the border, most notable in Pakistan-administered Kashmir.

The statement came hours after Islamabad's foreign ministry condemned what it called an 'unprovoked violation of its airspace by an Indian origin "super-sonic flying object"'.

The missile damaged some civilian property, said Pakistan's Inter-Services Public Relations, a wing of the Pakistan Armed Forces, but said 'it was certainly unarmed'.

India's charge d'affaires in Islamabad had been summoned to the foreign office for a 'strong protest', it added.

The 'imprudent launch' had damaged property on the ground and put at risk both civilian lives and aircraft in Pakistani airspace, it said, accusing India of 'callousness towards regional peace and stability'.

New Delhi has more than 500,000 troops stationed in Indian-administered Kashmir, where rebel groups have battled for decades for the region's independence or its merger with Pakistan.

New Delhi accuses Islamabad of backing the insurgents, which it denies.

Indian aircraft bombed what New Delhi called a terrorist training camp deep inside Pakistan in 2019 after a suicide bombing claimed by a Pakistan-based militant group killed 40 Indian troops.

In aerial skirmishes over Kashmir the next day, at least one Indian jet was shot down and its pilot captured by Pakistan, but Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan had him released in a 'peace gesture'.
