facebook exclude politiciansA Speech delivered at the Atlantic Festival in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday, Facebook’s Vice President of Global Affairs and Communications Nick Clegg revealed that politicians are “exempt” from inspection.
Facebook reply, “We do not submit speech by politicians to our independent fact checkers, and we generally allow it on the platform even when it would otherwise break our normal content rules,” according to Clegg.
“We don’t believe,” he wrote in an accompanying blog post, “that it’s an appropriate role for us to referee political debates and prevent a politician’s speech from reaching its audience and being subject to public debate and scrutiny.”
The policy—”on the books for over a year now”—means Facebook does not send organic content or ads from politicians to partners for review.
If a lawmaker shares previously debunked material (links, photos, videos), however, that content is demoted, replaced with related information from fact checkers, and rejected from adverts.
It turns out WhatsApp‘s ‘Delete for Everyone’ feature — designed to let you wipe texts and files you sent by accident — could still leave traces of your messages, due to a discrepancy in the way the function works on Android handsets and iPhones.
Researcher Shitesh Sachan noticed that even after purging messages, media files sent to iPhone users in group chats (who have enabled the ‘Save to Camera Roll’ setting) will remain on the device.
To clarify, although deleted messages containing media files won’t be visible in WhatsApp, the files will still be available to iPhone users with ‘Save to Camera Roll’ enabled.
By contrast, the feature works differently on WhatsApp for Android. Once a user has used ‘Delete for Everyone,’ media files saved to Android recipient’s photo gallery also get wiped.
The difference between the platforms could give a false sense of privacy to Android users unfamiliar with the way the feature works on iOS devices.
When the researcher contacted WhatsApp about the flaw, a company spokesperson suggested the feature offers no guarantee that media files will be properly purged from devices’ storage.
“The functionality provided via ‘Delete for Everyone’ is intended to delete the message and there is no guarantee that the media (or message) will be permanently deleted —the implementation focuses around the message presence in WhatsApp,” a spokesperson told the researcher, The Hacker News reports.
For the record, WhatsApp is not the only messenger that has suffered from this issue.
A researcher recently discovered Telegram kept images from deleted files in recipients’ phone storage, but the company has since released an update that fixes the bug. From the looks of it, though, WhatsApp has no immediate plans to address the issue.

The speed and capacity of the 5G network, together with the latest WiFi 6 technology in the router, will enable rain users to stream high-definition video to multiple devices simultaneously,” said Khaya Dlanga, Chief Marketing Officer, rain.
According to the network provider, its initial 5G offering will provide affordable, easy-to-install and fast wireless connectivity to businesses and homes as an alternative to ADSL, fixed-LTE and fibre. In the coming weeks, rain aims to open its new offering to all small businesses and homes within the coverage area of Johannesburg and Tshwane. Over the course of 2020, rain will extend the coverage area to major South African metros.
Network provider, Rain is currently leveraging its 4G data networking infrastructure in building its 5G network in its regulated 3600 MHz spectrum band. This will enable the provider to build a cost-effective network and limit the required additional number of sites, but still providing wide coverage. rain claims that the provider will be able to reduce the data cost for South Africans. “Access to affordable, fast broadband is key for the country to revive economic growth,” Dlanga added.

Dlanga has claimed that the provider’s new network was able to reach speeds approaching 700 Mbps. “However, in real-world conditions we expect to see at least 200 Mbps for customers,” Dlanga comments. rain is currently working with Huawei Technologies and WITS University to develop a 5G Innovation Lab. “This exciting space will give young engineers a head-start in developing the new, innovative applications of 5G,” Dlanga explains.
Facebook Inc unveiled new models of its Portal video chat devices on Wednesday, making the company’s first foray into TV streaming hardware but offering a limited selection of subscription services.
The launch comes as Facebook is trying to pivot toward more private forms of communication, after years of slowing user growth, data-sharing scandals and calls for change to its hands-off approach to content moderation.
The company is already one of the biggest global players in private messaging, with its WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram apps used by 2.4 billion people each month.
It is keeping the focus of its new Portal line on video calling, adding the capability for WhatsApp calls along with improvements to a wide-angle camera that keeps users in focus as they move about a room.
Facebook is also expanding Portal sales into countries including the UK, France and Australia while lowering prices to more closely compete with industry-leading smart speakers from Amazon and Google that sell for under 100 dollars.
Standard models of the Portal, which ship on October 15, will come in 129 dollars and 179 dollars versions.
The portal TV will cost 149 dollars and hit the shelves on November 5.
Facebook is hoping the social nature of its products will be their selling point, allowing users to watch shows together while interacting via video call on the same screen.
“I think that in a couple years’ time if you have a smart streaming device that doesn’t have a camera allowing you to video call people, you’re not going to have a competitive product.
“I think this is the killer feature for a device like this,” said the vice president of AR/VR Andrew Bosworth.
Bosworth also touted privacy protections like local processing of smart features on the devices, which means most user data, will not be sent back to Facebook servers.
But Portal TV offers only a few music apps and has limited options for TV programming, meaning it could face a stiff challenge in attracting consumers used to content-rich rivals like Apple TV, Netflix and Roku.
At a demonstration in San Francisco on Tuesday, the only way to stream shows appeared to be via Facebook’s Watch app.
Executives said Portal TV would have Amazon’s Prime Video app loaded by the time it is available.
Google said Thursday that it had reached a settlement with the National Labor Relations Board over complaints from multiple employees who say the company has stymied dissent, including one who has said he was fired for being an outspoken conservative.
Google plans to explain to employees the rights they have as workers under federal law, like the ability to discuss workplace conditions, said Jenn Kaiser, a Google spokeswoman. And it will tell the employees that Google will not retaliate against them for exercising those rights.
Under that settlement, we have agreed to post a notice to our employees reminding them of their rights under the National Labor Relations Act,” Ms. Kaiser said in a statement. “As a part of that notice, we will also remind employees of the changes we made to our workplace policies back in 2016 and 2017 that clarified those policies do not prevent employees from discussing workplace issues.”
The Apple CEO Tim Cook said the Apple Card would arrive in August on the company’s last earnings call, and here it is: Apple’s new credit card, issued in partnership with Goldman Sachs, will begin a “preview rollout” today, and then become broadly available to all iPhone owners in the US later this month.
Apple says a random selection of people who signed up to be notified about the Apple Card will be invited to sign up today, although the company won’t disclose exactly how many people will be in the preview group. The signup process, which requires iOS 12.4, involves entering your address, birthday, income level, and last four digits of your Social Security number. That information is sent to Goldman Sachs, which will approve or decline your application in real time — Apple says it should take less than a minute. Apple isn’t charging any late fees, annual fees, or international fees on this card, and it says that it doesn’t see any of your purchase data at all — all that transaction data cleanup and categorization happens locally on your phone. It’s a little skimpier than other premium card perks like access to airline lounges, concierge services, and so on, but Apple believes the simplicity and speed of just getting cash back will entice premium card customers who are frustrated with complicated points schemes to switch, while the payment and financial health features will appeal to everyone else. There has been some fierce criticism of Apple’s fairly standard APR, which starts at 12.99 percent and goes up to 24.24 percent, but Apple says its goal is to be among the lowest possible rates you can qualify for. Prime Day is a two-day promotion for Amazon subscribers offering discounts, sales deals and same-day shipping, pushing workers to intense limits.
Employees at the company’s centre in Minnesota, US, took a six-hour strike action on the first day of the promotion, along with staff at seven warehouses in Germany, Spain, Poland and Britain.
Unions of Amazon workers in European countries have staged strikes on Prime Days in the past, but the walkout in Minnesota represents the first major action of its kind in the US.
UNI Global Union, a Switzerland-based union co-ordinating Amazon workers and their unions, president Stuart Appelaum said the company “needs to understand that human beings are not robots.”
War on Want executive director Asad Rehman called the company’s “unchecked” growth a “threat to everyone’s rights.”
He said: “There is a litany of abuses associated with Amazon business practices, from harassment of workers to unsafe conditions in its warehouses, that stretch right through to its tax affairs.
“Unless our politicians step up, this company that fails to pay its fair share of tax, and fails to treat its workers with respect or pay a living wage, will continue to grow and dominate the global economy in the 21st century. It’s not the future that workers or the public want.”
Mr. Rehman said that workers and communities are coming together, taking action across the world to demand that “this engine of inequality” change its ways, adding that “there is nothing modern about exploitation.”
“It is people power that will force Amazon to give back to the communities where it operates, and ensure that the rise of digital companies results in benefits to the societies in which they operate instead of producing gross inequality where a few are made grotesquely rich while others have their basic rights at work denied or earn less than a living wage,” he said.

In her interview, Busola recounted how the clergyman also allegedly tried having sex with her inside his matrimonial home when she came in to help his wife, Modele, when she had their first child. Justice Simon Amobeda of the Federal High Court sitting in Calabar, Cross River State, on Wednesday, June 26, 2019, sentenced a notorious yahoo yahoo kingpin, Akpojivi Onoriode, who was arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on a one-count charge bordering on cybercrime.
The convict, a 29-year-old graduate of Delta State University, Abraka and a father of two, was arrested by operatives of the Uyo Zonal Office of the Commission in the early hours of Saturday, May 4, 2019, following intelligence report exposing him of living above his means.
He was picked up at his lavishly furnished duplex on Plot 10, Block VI, Unical Satellite Town, Calabar, Cross River State.Image may contain: house and outdoor Upon his arrest, the convict, popularly known as “Blinks” or “Mr. White”, confessed to having offshore accounts in China, and narrated how he started the business of defrauding people quite early, while he was still an undergraduate at Delta State University, Abraka in Delta State.
The charge against Akpojivi reads: “That you, Onoriode Joel Akpojivi, on or about the 4th day of May 2019, in Nigeria within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court did unlawfully produce, supply, procure for use and distributed a computer program (fake online banking link platform) designed for the purpose of electronically defrauding unsuspecting persons and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 28 (1) (a) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention Etc) Act 2015 and punishable under Section (1) (c) of the same Act.” Image may contain: carPhoto of Akpojivi’s car Shocked by the weight of evidence gathered against him by the EFCC, Akpojivi chose not to waste the time of the court as he pleaded “guilty” to the charge. “I hereby pray the court to convict and sentence him based on the terms of the agreement,” she said. When Obabueki was arrested, he admitted that his area of specialisation was impersonation, and that he sends out fraudulent emails to defraud his victims.
A forensic analysis of his laptop led to the recovery of quite a number of highly incriminating scam documents that further indicted him of the crime.
The charge to which Obabueki pleaded guilty to reads: “That you, Obabueki Eromosele Philips, (aka Leo Sim) ‘m’ on or about the 30th day of May, 2019 in Nigeria within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court did fraudulently impersonate one Leo Sim, with intent to obtain property from unsuspecting persons, the pretence you knew to be false and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 22 (2) (b) (ii) of the Cybercrime (Prohibition and Prevention, Etc) Act, 2015 and punishable under Section 22 (2) (b) (iv) of the same Act.” In view of his guilty plea, Abuh informed the court of the plea bargain arrangement entered between the Commission and the convict and also prayed the court to convict and sentence him based on the agreements therein.
The court thereafter sentenced him to six months imprisonment with an option of fine of N50,000.

resident Muhammadu Buhari has inaugurated the National Economic Council at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Thursday.
He charged the council in his inaugural address, to focus on security, agriculture, health, and economic development.
President Buhari asked Governors to rally the Local Government Chairmen in their states, to work towards improving education, and ensure that the next four years should focus on increasing Internally Generated Revenue, Value Added Tax, and Agricultural Output.
In attendance were the Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo, state Governors and their deputies.
Others present include, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, National Security Adviser, Babagana Monguno, Chief of Staff to the President, Abba Kyari, and CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele.
YouTube’s ongoing problems surrounding content that involves children has led to an investigation from the federal government, according to a new Washington Post report.
The Federal Trade Commission is said to be investigating YouTube’s data collection practices and failure to protect children, according to the Post. The investigation is reported to be in its late stages and was brought about after complaints from consumer groups and privacy advocates. The investigation also follows numerous reports and investigations from publications over the last several months demonstrating how YouTube’s autoplay and recommendation feature allows predators to take advantage of content on the platform featuring children. A spokesperson for the FTC declined to comment.
Policy makers have started to respond to the investigation. Sen. Edward Markey (D-MA) called the investigation “into YouTube’s treatment of children online overdue,” in a press release issued yesterday, adding that “the company has yet to take the necessary steps to protect its youngest users.”
Both YouTube and Google executives, including respective CEOs Susan Wojcicki and Sundar Pichai, have accelerated trying to find a solution to the growing issue. The company decided to close comments on the majority of videos starring children in February as a way to prevent predatory comments from spreading. The company has also prohibited minors from livestreaming without an adult in the room.
One of the biggest requests that YouTube executives have received from policy makers, critics, and even some employees is to stop recommending videos that contain children. A YouTube spokesperson told The New York Times earlier this month that doing so would hurt creators. Instead, the company has limited “recommendations on videos that it deems as putting children at risk,” according to the Times.
CONTENT FEATURING CHILDREN IS PERVASIVE ON THE SITE, POSING DAUNTING MODERATION PROBLEMS
Wojcicki and Pichai appear to be looking into stronger measures to solve the problem, according to multiple reports over the last week, including two investigations from Bloomberg and the Wall Street Journal. One possible solution, according to the Journal, is to move all kids content over to YouTube’s standalone app, YouTube Kids. A YouTube spokesperson previously told The Verge the company considers “lots of ideas for improving YouTube and some remain just that — ideas.”
Even that comes with its own issues, though. The app, although generally safer than the main YouTube platform, has faced an array of moderation challenges, including graphic discussions about pornography and suicide, explicit sexual language in cartoons, and modeling unsafe behaviors like playing with lit matches.
There’s also the issue of kids not using the app as much as the main site. Bloomberg’s report cited internal sources at YouTube who suggested that children “tend to shift over to YouTube’s main site before they hit 13.” Even though the app sees more than 20 million people a week, a company spokesperson told Bloomberg, that’s just a fraction of the number of views popular kids channels are getting on the main site.
Content featuring children is pervasive on the site, posing daunting moderation problems. Kids are often incorporated into family vlogging, a quickly growing sector; they star in their own channels unboxing toys or playing with friends; many even partner with popular vloggers — top creator Jake Paul often collaborates with a four-year-old named Tydus for his videos.
It would be difficult for YouTube to remove all videos with children and migrate them over to YouTube Kids without affecting the greater creator community. While protecting kids is a top priority for the company, dealing with creator backlash is something the company has always considered, too.
Mafikizolo singer, Nhlanhla Nciza has announced her split from her music mogul husband Thembinkosi “TK” Nciza after 15-years of marriage.
The 41-year-old singer made the shocking announcement this morning in a lengthy Instagram post, saying the decision to end their union was amicable and assured fans that they would “remain on good terms.”
