Bayern Munich confirmed that veteran French star Franck Ribery will end his 12-year spell at the club at the end of this season, and announced that he and fellow stalwart Arjen Robben will be granted a farewell match next year.

In a statement on their website on Sunday morning, the Bundesliga club announced that the Frenchman would not extend his contract beyond June 2019.

“When I came to Bayern it was a dream come true,” said Ribery, 36, who joined in 2008 and has won eight Bundesliga titles in the 12 years since.

“It won’t be easy to leave, but we must never forget what we have achieved together.”

Robben, 35, confirmed his impending departure at the end of last year, and it was widely expected that Ribery would follow suit, as Bayern prepare for a squad overhaul ahead of next season.

The two wingers have been defining stars in a dominant decade for Bayern, winning the Champions League in 2013 as well as a host of domestic titles.

Bayern announced that they would organise a “big farewell game” for both Ribery and Robben, to be held in 2020.

“Franck and Arjen are great players, and Bayern Munich have a lot to thank them for,” said club CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.

“They helped shape the most successful decade in the history of the club.”

The Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) has threatened to sanction actress, Tonto Dikeh over her face-off with ex-husband, Olakunle Churchill.


The board said her utterances were unbecoming, adding that the separation issue was being overstretched.

Recall King Tonto revealed how she caught her ex-husband, Olakunle Churchhill on a red pant, with red candles and laptop at night, describing him as a Yahoo boy and scammer.

She has continued to lash out at critics and those who made jokes about her situation.

Brazil’s Ronaldinho has found a second calling after retiring from professional football: rapper.

The former Brazil national and FC Barcelona megastar — full name Ronaldinho Gaucho — has released a song along with Brazilian singer Jorge Vercillo decrying corruption in their country.

The 2005 Golden Ball award winner appears in a video, recorded in a studio, wearing a black beret and a white tank top emblazoned with the image of Saint George slaying a dragon.

Halfway through the duet, he plays the drums, then breaks out in a 30-second rap solo.

“Love is our game, from start to finish, in my heart there are no longer enemies,” he raps.

He then asks the armour-clad Christian saint to slay “the dragon of greed” and corruption, while a chorus bemoans the squandering of public funds in detriment of “schools and hospitals.”

This is not the first musical outing for Ronaldinho, 39, who hung up his football cleats in January 2018.

He has also performed with Tunisian rapper K2rhym and was featured in the official World Cup 2018 song performed by Will Smith, Nicky Jam and Era Istrefi.

Ronaldinho even made a surprise appearance playing the drums at the World Cup closing ceremony at Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium.

Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Prof. Tijani Muhammad-Bande, has formally declared his intention to vie for the presidency of the 74th UN General Assembly (UNGA).

Muhammad-Bande made the declaration at a cocktail party attended by world diplomats and delegates in New York on Friday evening.
This came barely eight days after the current UNGA president, Ms Maria Espinosa, announced him as the first candidate for the position.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that election of the president of the 74th UNGA will hold at the UN headquarters on June 4.


In a statement on its website, UNGA said the presidency of the 74th session was zoned to Africa in “full respect of the established principle of geographical rotation”, among other reasons.

The current president, who is the Foreign Minister of Ecuador, was elected on June 5, and assumed duty on Sept. 18, 2018.

Thus she will step aside on Sept. 17, as the UNGA presidency runs on a one-year tenure

According to the statement, an informal interactive dialogue with Muhammad-Bande is scheduled for May 13, in line with UNGA’s resolution 71/323 titled “Revitalisation of the Work of the General Assembly”.

At the session, the Nigerian permanent representative will have the opportunity to respond to questions from other stakeholders.

Addressing guests at Friday’s event, the candidate pledged to make the organisation stronger and work better for its member states and their citizens.

He said as president of the 74th Session, he would focus on the effective implementation of existing mandates, and make a contribution in all defined follow-up areas.

The candidate promised to promote international peace and security, prevent conflict, strengthen global action to tackle climate change, ensure inclusion, human rights, and the empowerment of youth and women.

He also pledged to ensure that the decisions reached and resolutions passed at the general assembly were implemented for the benefits of citizens.

Muhammad-Bande, who hails from Zagga in present day Kebbi, has had an outstanding career as a scholar and diplomat.

He holds M.A in Political Science from Boston University, USA, in 1981 and a PhD in Political Science from the University of Toronto, Canada in 1987.

Between January 2000 and February 2004, he was the Director-General of the Centre African de Formation et de Recherche Administrative pour le Development (CAFRAD) in Tangier, Morocco.

CAFRAD is Africa’s premier institution with responsibility for training and research in public administration and management.

Besides other positions both locally and internationally, he was the Director-General of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) between 2010 and 2016.

Ishaq Oloyede Ishaq Oloyede Ishaq Oloyede, the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, (JAMB), has said the board has discovered that some highly placed politicans in Nigeria did not sit for the matriculation examnimation by themselves.

The Registrar said this on Friday, while speaking at the 23rd annual seminar of the Nigerian Academy of Education, He said the outcome of its probe into examination fraud between 2009 and 2019 will shock many Nigerians.

Oloyede said although the board may not be able to punish the culprits because they have already left the system, it would go ahead to publish their names in order to shame them.

He also said the board has hired a Senior Advocate of Nigeria to conduct the prosecution of more than 100 persons caught in various malpractices during the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), which held between April 11 and 18, and who were arrested by security operatives across the country.

The registrar did not name the SAN leading the prosecution of the errant UTME candidates and professional examination fraudsters. He also did not state the day the 2019 UTME results would be released. Oloyede said the board was amused by the insinuation that its server had crashed.

Such comments, he said, were amusing to members of the board. The registrar said: “If I were to be punishing every staff of JAMB that is committing infractions, I will not focus on the assignment.

I will be going from one disciplinary committee to the other and my attention will be diverted. “And that is why I go for the shortest route: once you are caught to have committed one infraction, you will not be assigned with examination duties again. It is a privilege, which I can withdraw.

“If you are that bad that I don’t want to see your face around me, I will transfer you to another place. “If we have to take disciplinary action against all of them, look at it, today, we have not less than 100 people in police cells across the country who were caught for examination malpractices.

“I have appointed a Senior Advocate of Nigeria who is a former Solicitor-General to help me oversee all these so that the suspects can be brought to book.

The Niger Delta Avengers has warned the Federal Government to desist from rigging the presidential election billed for tomorrow. The group also advised multinational oil companies in the region to immediately vacate their personnel in case of any eventuality.

NDA is a factional militia group to the Niger Delta Greenland Justice Mandate (NDGJM) and the Coalition of Niger Delta Militants (CONDEM) that threatened the peace of the country three years ago over unresolved Niger Delta questions.

The group threatened to cripple the country’s economy should President Muhammadu Buhari’s All Progressives Congress (APC) led government rigs the presidential poll in its favour. This came barely few hours after the spokesperson of President Muhmmadu Buhari Campaign Orgnization in Delta State, Dr. Cairo Ojougboh, at the Secretariat of the APC in Asaba, thanked the exmilitants in the region for endorsing his principal for second tenure.

Ojougboh had threatened that APC will cut the rigging legs of PDP and cause the party’s hand to wither if supporters engaged in malpractices. But NDA, which earlier adopted the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, rejected the purported plan by some ex-militant ‘generals’ to make a U-turn to endorse Buhari. The spokesperson of the militant group, Brig- Gen. Mudoch Agbinibo, in a statement, urged Nigerians to be prepared for a perpetual recession if Buhari insisted on imposing himself on the people.

A popular businessman based in Benin the Edo State capital, Mr. Romeo Shiko has filed a suit against the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) and two officials of the Benin Zonal Office of the commission for N100 million over an alleged unlawful detention and obnoxious bail conditions.

Shiko, sought among other reliefs, that his unlawful detention since, January 21, 2019 till date and his prior arrest and unlawful detention for 16 days in July, 2017, without justifiable cause and without a complaint from any nominal complainant negates his fundamental rights.

The Suit No. FHC /B/ CS/12/19: Shiko Romeo v. the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and 2 ors., was filed on Friday February 1, 2019, by his Counsel, Ogbusua Rose Oleh, of Douglas Ogbankwa & Co. at the Federal High Court, Benin.

Some ex-Bakassi Strike Force militants, Friday, at the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) governorship campaign rally in Bakassi Local Government of Cross River State, declared total support for the re-election of the State Governor, Sen. Ben Ayade.

This is coming few months after the ex-militants were granted amnesty by the Federal Government in collaboration with the Cross River Government.

Speaking at the rally ground, the former Commander of the defunct Bakassi Strike Force, Ene Benjamin Effiom, aka ‘Gee 1’ said, “Ayade must go back to the Diamond Hill for he is what Cross River needs, a man with a heart of God.”

Ene who rhetorically asked, “If not Ayade, who else?” intimated that “the Governor has brought strong and lasting peace in the Gulf of Guinea as on the day of laying down our arms, he made the boys to become men.”

Also in a recent development, the Southern Senatorial district Labour Party (LP) members has collapsed its structure into PDP.

According to the Bakassi Labour Party chapter Chairman Joseph Asuquo Bassey, the chapter Chairmen of Biase, Akamkpa, Odukpani, Calabar South, Calabar Municipality, Akpabuyo and Bakassi agreed to collapse their structures into PDP to ensure victory for the PDP.”

As preparations for the 2019 general elections the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Cross River State has concluded a 3day training of NYSC Members to prepare them as Ad-hoc staff.

The training saw over 5, 000 Corps members posted to the State participate fully.

According to INEC Administrative Secretary, Irene Ngozi Oghuma, the training was organised to equip the attendees with necessary skills to effectively discharge their duties as Presiding Officers (POs) and Assistant Presiding Officers (APOs) during the elections.

The Federal high court sitting in Abuja, yesterday Thursday, restrained INEC from publishing any names other than Usani Usani, Ukandi Iknakefa, Krees Ojonido as the duly elected candidates for the All progressive Congress for the governorship, Senate, House of representatives and House of Assembly.

Ruling in a motion on notice, which has been obtained by CrossRiverWatch,
presiding Judge, Justice l Ekwo, ordered that all parties are to maintain status quo pending the determination of the matter.

In his argument, counsel to the All Progressives Congress APC, argued that the motion was not ripe for hearing.

The court adjourned to 5th February for hearing of the substantive suit.
