President Muhammadu Buhari is confident that Nigeria’s democracy is steadily improving with a deeper understanding of the culture and tenets among the people.

The President said this at a meeting with the Governor General of Canada, Julie Payette, on Monday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

He also believes that the progress of the nation’s democracy is as a result of the strengthening of the institutions that guarantee free and fair elections.

“I emphasise free and fair elections at all times,” he was quoted as saying in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina.

President Buhari revealed that he saw the evolving strength of democracy in the country by contesting for elections three times before winning at the fourth trial in 2015.

He told the Governor General that Nigeria had been learning from the mistakes of those who practiced democracy for a longer period and by looking inward at its own peculiarities.

The President said the bilateral relations with Canada would continue to be improved, considering the huge interest of the country in Nigeria and growing economic ties, with many Nigerians schooling and working in the country.

He commended Canada for playing a brotherly role in helping displaced persons in the North East, following the Boko Haram insurgency in the region.

In her remarks, the Governor General said Nigeria and Canada enjoy a warm and strong partnership that has translated into ease of migration, large trade relations, and cultural exchanges.

Payette, who is an astronaut, stressed the importance for nations to pool resources together to start exploring the benefits of space in providing solutions to some problems on earth.

She noted that the world would achieve more by de-emphasising geographical differences and refocusing its energy on the commonality of humanity, pointing out that from space one can only see an earth without borders.

The Governor General explained that her visit to Nigeria was about showcasing “youth, innovation and technology.”

She disclosed that Canada would like to partner with Nigeria in the ongoing diversification of the economy.

“We wish you free and credible elections in 2019,” Payette added.

A fight broke out at a bar in Ghana leaving one person badly injured.

The bar where the fight took place is called C Tee Lounge and it is popularly frequented by Nigerians in Ghana. The injured man is a Nigerian.

According to reports, one of the guys at the bar collected the phone of the Nigerian man, who then retaliated, esulting in a fight.

The bar was trashed and so was the Nigerian man who ended up bleeding terribly and had to be rushed to the hospital.

Paul Biya, who has ruled Cameroon with an iron fist since 1982, on Monday won a landslide victory in a controversial presidential election, as the government tightened security in the capital and gunfire erupted in the volatile Anglophone region.

The Constitutional Council, dominated by Biya loyalists, on Monday said Biya had won 71.3 percent of the ballot in the October 7 election, marred by allegations of widespread fraud, a low turnout and violence in the poll run-up.

The Council’s head Clement Atangana said opposition challenger Maurice Kamto, was a far second with 14.2 percent of the vote.

Voting was disrupted in Francophone Cameroon’s two English-speaking regions, where a separatist movement has unleashed a brutal government crackdown. Turnout here was below five percent, according to the International Crisis Group think tank.

Witnesses on Monday told AFP of gunfire during the morning in Buea, capital of the English-speaking Southwest region, which has been rocked by violence for months.

AFP journalists reported tight security around the main post office in the capital Yaounde after calls on social media for a protest rally against the results.

Anti-riot police trucks and security forces were deployed across the area.

Authorities on Sunday had banned an opposition march in the commercial capital Douala called to denounce the “shameful and massive fraud” in the election. About 30 people were arrested on the spot, AFP journalists reported.

Kamto, who pronounced himself the winner of the vote before even the first results were announced — leading the government to brand him an outlaw — has alleged that six of the 11 members of the Constitutional Council were biased in Biya’s favour.

Kamto has also called for the vote to be annulled in seven of the country’s 10 regions, citing “multiple irregularities, serious cases of fraud and multiple violations of the law”.

Biya became prime minister in 1975, but precisely how he was anointed to succeed Cameroon’s founding president Ahmadou Ahidjo in November 1982 remains a mystery.

Unlike more fiery and flamboyant peers in the club of long-standing African leaders, critics say Biya — who is nicknamed “The Sphinx” — is a quiet autocrat.

In a rare moment of candour, he once warned of his sweeping powers telling a Cameroonian journalist in 1986: “Just a little shake of my head and you’ll be reduced to nothing.”

The Edo State House of Assembly has impeached its Deputy Speaker Hon. Tiger Edoror.

Edoror’s impeachment followed a motion moved by a member representing Oredo East Constituency, Hon. Osaigboyo Oyoha, alleging financial misappropriation, anti-party activities and corruption against the former Deputy Speaker.

His impeachment, however, led to a rowdy session as him and some of his loyalists tried to resist the action.

When calm was returned, the impeached Deputy Speaker, a member representing Owan East Constituency, Folly Ogedengbe, and another member representing Etsako West constituency, Gani Audu, were suspended for three months.

The House later elected Justin Okonobo as the new Deputy Speaker.

Hon. Okonobo is a former Speaker and member representing Igueben constituency.

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, believes the Federal Government deserves to be applauded by the Nigerian workers.

According to him, the Muhammadu Buhari administration has been able to manage the welfare of workers in the country better than other administrations.

“Many people will not remember very quickly,” the minister said in an interview with Channels Television on the last edition of Roadmap 2019.

He explained further, “In the military government, at a time, there was an embargo on employment; even embargo on promotions. When people go, the vacancies are there and the monies are returned to the coffers of the government.”

“We are not doing so and I thought Nigerian workers should be clapping for us for that. We are promoting them (workers) as we speak; we are replacing those who have left,” Ngige added.

“In fact, when people leave on high grades, we do what is called suppression and get more (people) on the lower grades. The Presidency doesn’t want anybody to be laid off; this President.”

According to the minister, President Muhammadu Buhari is very concerned about the welfare of workers because he was part of them, as a soldier.

“No embargo on employment,” he insisted, stressing that government was recruiting more workers and replacing those who left for one reason or the other.

According to him, the Buhari administration has recruited 30,000 policemen and thousands of workers into various parastatals of the government.

Senator Ngige added that the government came up with various interventions such as the National Social Investment Programme, to improve the standard of living of the people.

He also pointed out the N-Power scheme for 500,000 young Nigerians whom he said were receiving N30,000 monthly and N5,000 for equipment.

He said traders were not left out of the benefits from the government as they enjoy small-scale empowerment under the interest-free loan scheme among others.

On the issue of minimum wage, the minister said, “It’s in the exclusive list; exclusive legislative list.”

“It is the Federal Government that will legislate on it. I am hopeful that we can do something that we can call National Minimum Wage Act, 2018,” Ngige said.

The House of Representatives has called on the Executive to as a matter of urgency, commence further negotiation for the safe release of the women who are still being held captive by Boko Haram terrorists.

The lawmakers made the call on Tuesday during plenary at the lower chamber of the National Assembly in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

This position followed the consideration of a motion sponsored by a lawmaker from Imo State, Mr Chike Okafor, on the urgent need to take steps to rescue the remaining captives from the custody of the insurgents.

In his motion address, Mr Okafor told the lawmakers that it was a sad moment for them and the nation, since the killing of the second aid worker, Hauwa Liman, who was abducted along with some of her colleagues by the by Boko Haram early this year.

“It is painful to note that despite efforts by the Federal Government who opened a negotiation channel immediately and put all possible efforts on table to secure an agreeable bargain for the safe release of the abductees, unfortunately, Mr Speaker, the Boko Haram sect took a horrible path of executing these helpless and selfless voluntary health workers who gave their time on earth for the care and wellness of devastated Boko Haram victims,” he added.

Some lawmakers who also debated on the motion asked President Muhammadu Buhari to resign if he is unable to tackle the security challenges facing the country.
