The National Youth Service Corps has sanctioned popular artiste, David Adeleke, aka Davido, for violating camp rules during the mandatory three-week orientation camp, Saturday PUNCH has learnt.

Top sources in the NYSC told one of our correspondents that for “absconding” from the camp during the orientation camp, the Corps had to “dekit” the artiste, which brought to an end his participation in the 2018 Batch ‘B’ Stream II in Lagos State, where he had been posted.

The source said, “The NYSC was constrained to “dekit” Davido for violating the rules guiding conduct and activities in the camp. As a matter of fact, he absconded because he was away from the camp without permission. That prompted the Corps to issue him a query which was sent from Abuja. So, he is no longer a serving corps member.”

The artiste, our correspondent gathered, violated many of the scheme’s regulations.

Other NYSC bylaws violated by Davido include bringing vehicles into the orientation camp; disclosing official information; engaging in private practice; taking part in partisan politics and reporting late for duty.

However, it was also gathered that he may be remobilised for the scheme.

While replying to a post on Instagram during the week, the artiste had said that his NYSC programme had been terminated. He later deleted the comment from the post made by a friend.

Meanwhile, Articles 2 and 15 under the Code of Conduct subtitle in the NYSC Bylaws (Revised in 2011) state that every corps member shall not leave orientation camp without the written permission from the state coordinator, and every member shall not bring vehicles or motorcycles into the orientation camp.

The articles, however, stated that any member found guilty of violating these provisions, among other provisions, will be liable to be decamped and sent out of camp.

Section 15 (ii) added, “Any member who brings vehicles or motorcycles to camp shall not be registered, and if already registered, shall be decamped.”

The NYSC Director of Information, Adenike Adeyemi, who told Saturday PUNCH, in a response to an enquiry, that the Corps had communicated with the popular musician over his activities during his service year, however, did not say what punishment had been meted out to him for breaking several bylaws.

APC urges officials to defend selves
The Akwa Ibom State government has alleged witch-hunt by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in connivance with the opposition.

In a statement yesterday, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Charles Udoh, said the
alleged indictment of Governor Udom Emmanuel and other government officials by the EFCC over a purported withdrawal of N1.7 billion from the state coffers was baseless and malicious.

“The alleged indictment is tainted with political undertone to malign the integrity of the current government of Akwa Ibom State. It is another face-saving attempt by the EFCC to justify the several illegalities it has allowed itself to be used to perpetrate against the government and good people of a peaceful state by the opposition party.

“It is instructive to note that the EFCC is regurgitating this line of skewed narrative in the media for the umpteenth time in a flagrant act of impunity against the judicial process.”

He said the state government had instituted a legal proceeding against the commission at the Federal High Court, Uyo, and therefore would remain fervent in its determination not to be dragged into a public discourse on a matter that is patently subjudice.

“The constitution and laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria authorize only the House of Assembly and the auditor-general to pry into the financial dealings of a state government”, the statement said. Udoh, who noted that the state, in the past three years, had been publishing its annual audited financial statements, said it underscored the government’s commitment to transparency, accountability and integrity in governance.

“Copies of the state’s yearly
audited financial statements are available in the public domain. It is mockery of the rule of law for the EFCC to allow itself to degenerate into a tool for character assassination, political mudslinging and witch-hunting by the opposition in Akwa Ibom State,” Udoh added.

Also yesterday, the President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mr. Paul Usoro (SAN), one of those accused of complicity in the alleged laundering of funds belonging to the state government, denied the allegation of fraud in the suit filed against him by the EFCC at the Federal High Court, Lagos.

Usoro, while addressing the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the Bar in Abuja yesterday said no charges had been served on him by the commission.He frowned at what he described as EFCC’s misconception of the issues about lawyers’ fees while tackling financial crimes.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board said on Wednesday about 470,000 candidates or 28 per cent in the 2018 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination had been admitted to universities so far.

Over 1,662,000 candidates sat for the examination in March.

The board added that the reduction in the registration fee for the exam from N5,000 to N3,500 by President Muhammadu Buhari would take effect from January 1, 2019.

The Chairman of JAMB Governing Board, Dr Emmanuel Ndukwe, said the admission process in 2018 is still on.

According to him, the body is monitoring everything relating to admission on its Central Admission Processing System.

Former US president, George W. Bush, delivered an emotional tribute to his late father George H.W. Bush, at his memorial service which took place today at the National Cathedral in Washington.


His late father, who was also a former President of the United States died on Friday at home in Houston, Texas. He was 94.

Udom Emmanuel,the Governor of Akwa Ibom State has flagged off the construction of the 15-kilometre Ikot Akpan Afaha-Ikot Oku Usung Road and others in Ukanafun Local Government Area of the state. The governor, who was represented by the Commissioner for Works, Mr. Ephraim Inyangeyen, said when completed, the road would link Ikot Ibiritam-Ikot Ekaide to Ikot Akpan Afaha.

He instructed the contractors handling the road projects against doing shoddy jobs, saying such would not be acceptable, even as the governor called on the residents of the area, especially the youths not to disrupt the progress of work by engaging in any activity that could intimidate the contractors or making unnecessary demands from the contractors.

Furthermore, he urged the youths to protect the contractors and cooperate with the workers in order to complete the work on schedule, pledging the readiness of the state government to address the concerns raised by the people.

The Director of Alibaba’s video streaming platform,Yang Weidong has been arrested in China.

Weidong was arrested on Monday on suspicion of accepting improper payments, Alibaba revealed in a statement. He is now under police investigation and has been removed from his position as president of the video site Youku, according to a statement Alibaba filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission on Tuesday.

The statement reads in part:

A ring believed to have been worn by Pontius Pilate, the Roman prefect who ordered the crucifixion of Jesus, has been found in Israel, archaeologists say.

The 2,000-year-old bronze ring was first unearthed 50 years ago at Herodium, a fortress built by King Herod, but archaeologists recently examined it and found the word, "Pilatus" on the ring. The writing was found after scientists from the Israel Antiquities Authority cleaned and photographed the ring, which showed a wine vessel called a "krater", Metro UK reports.

Professor Danny Schwartz told Israeli news outlet Haaretz:

I don’t know of any other Pilatus from the period and the ring shows he was a person of stature and wealth.

Roi Porat, director of the dig at Herodium said, "the personal connection just cries out". But others suggest that the ring might have been used by a member of Pilate’s staff to stamp documents.

The researchers wrote:

Simple all-metal rings were primarily the property of soldiers, Herodian and Roman officials, and middle-income folk of all trades and occupations.

It is therefore unlikely that Pontius Pilatus, the powerful and rich prefect of Judaea, would have worn a thin, all copper-alloy sealing ring.

Residents of the Tangaza Local Government Area of Sokoto State have raised the alarm over the activities of some suspected bandits who allegedly demand levies from people.

But the state police command has debunked the claim, urging people to go about their lawful business without panic.

The bandits were said to be ex-members of a vigilance group who had once been of assistance to the community and its environs in checking activities of kidnappers.

It was learnt that the group went round the community with weapons applying strange laws and punishing defaulters.

“The bandits are members of the vigilance group that had helped us to flush out kidnappers from their base in Balle forest, in the Gudu Local Government Area of the state,” a source, who preferred anonymity, said.

Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) has blamed constant collapse of buildings in the country on absence of law to regulate the practice of engineering works by unqualified personnel.

Speaking at the end of the 51st national engineering conference and annual general meeting of the NSE in Abuja, yesterday, President of the Society, Adekunle Mokuolu, said the amended Bill that would empower the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) to discipline non-engineers was now awaiting the assent of President Muhammadu Buhari, following its passage by the National Assembly. He expressed hope that the Bill would be signed into law very soon.

He explained that currently, COREN lacks the capacity to regulate activities of non-engineers, who are mostly blamed for designing and supervising sub-standard buildings that eventually collapse, disclosing that NSE has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Building and Construction Skilled Artisans Association of Nigeria (BCSAAN), with a view to halting the practices of non-engineers in the structure building processes.

The Nigerian Army has noted with great concern the deliberate and concerted efforts to mislead the public by some people through misinformation. Thus creating erroneous impression of the Nigerian Army through inaccurate and false publication of casualty figures on the unfortunate attacks on some of its locations in the North East.

The latest of this worrisome development was the attack on our troops location at Metele, Borno State, in which some persons and media outlets continued to circulate various wrong acounts and inaccurate casuality figures of own troops without efforts to verify from the military.

This is coming at the heels of our release of 28th November 2018 in which we gave accurate details of the attacks and casualty figures in a bid to set the records straight and inform the public true account of things. We also promised to continuously carry the public along through accurate and timely information dissemination on operations and other activities of the Nigerian Army in the release.

However it was observed that the trend continued unabated. Most of these inaccurate, false reports and fake news were aimed at denigrating the leadership of the Nigerian Army.

An orangutan who was forced to become a sex slave and sleep with men on a daily basis has finally undergone rehabilitation after it was rescued from its kidnapper in an Indonesian village.

The endangered Bornean orangutan named, Pony, was reportedly discovered in February 2003 inside a darkened room in the village of Kareng Pangi, Central Kalimantan chained to a wall and lying on a mattress.

The orangutan who was taken away from her mother when she was a baby, was abused for years by local palm oil farmers coming into the village to pay £2 each to have sex with her.

According to Mai Online, the brothel madam who kept her in the dark room treated her extremely harshly, shaved her every two days and forced her to wear perfume and makeup. She was even taught to perform sex acts on demand for her customers.
