Properties worth several millions of naira were destroyed in the Abule Egba area of Lagos State on Wednesday as fire from a petroleum products pipeline ravaged the area.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the affected streets were Arowolo, Shobowale, Iyalode Abule-Egba, Taiwo Adewole, Adepegba, Wamon Taofeek, Santos and Owode.

It was learnt that the explosion was as a result of the activities of suspected petroleum products’ thieves from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation’s pipeline in the Arowolo area.

When our correspondents visited the site, a total of 63 vehicles, 98 shops, four tricycles, six houses and one church were counted to have been razed by the fire, which reportedly began around 2am.

It was gathered that the rescue teams that responded to the incident included the Lagos State Fire Service, the state Police Command, Federal Road Safety Corps, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Lagos State Emergency Ambulance Service and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency.

An eyewitness, Junad Aderogba, said the fire arose from the activities of vandals scooping fuel from a pipeline, adding that the incident was a reoccurrence of a similar one on December 26, 2006.

The latest demonstration was part of a campaign to protest the use of fur and leather in consumer goods.

On December 16, the activists lay down in Plaça de Catalunya, with one holding a sign reading “How many lives just for one coat?” in Spanish.

Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi

The Minister of Transportation, Mr Rotimi Amaechi, on Monday called on Nigerian youths to vote President Muhammadu Buhari in for a second term to ensure a better future for them.

Amaechi, who was a guest at the 2018 Future Awards in Lagos, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the future of the youth was at stake if they failed to support the incumbent administration.

He warned that voting for candidates who had no good intention for the growing population of young Nigerians would be tantamount to a plunge into a bleak future.

“I only have a simple but candid advice to Nigerian youths and that is: come 2018 elections, they should vote for Buhari because their future is at stake.

“I became Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly at the age of 34, I became the governor at the age of 42 and I became a minister of the Federal Republic at 50.

“We cannot afford to truncate our future for a piece of meat; we should be watchful because those people who stole our money and commonwealth are regrouping to come back to perpetrate their act.

“These people want to continue from where they were stopped from looting the treasury, when oil was sold at between 110 and 120 U.S. dollars,’’ he said.

The minister said that some of those parading themselves as political aspirants had “corruption cases hanging on their necks’’, adding that the youths must be wary of such candidates.

“If those that have stolen our money are yet to be jailed, it is because there is a process we have to follow and that is the rule of law; most of them have cases in court.

“The court will deliver judgment on them, as we cannot be the judge and prosecutor in the cases. The important thing is that they are being prosecuted.

“We are building a legacy for the youth and that is what we want to continue, I have gone through elections as a young citizen and I know what this means to the youth.

“The economy is growing steadily and by the end of the year, we would have achieved a two-per-cent growth and by next year, we hope to arrive at six per cent,” he said.

Besides, Amaechi said that the Buhari-administration would continue accord priority to the country’s rail transport development project, adding that it was a massive project involving about 6,000 km of railways.

Drama took place at the Akwa Ibom international airport on Friday December 14th when President Buhari’s wife, Aisha Buhari, visited the state for a political meeting.

Wife of the current state governor, Martha Udom, was on hand at the airport to receive Mrs Buhari. However, the immediate past first lady of the state, Ekaette Akpabio, was also at the airport with her team to welcome Mrs Buhari.

Trouble started when Mrs Udom insisted that it was in her position as the current first lady to receive Mrs Buhari. Mrs Akpabio’ team refused and both sides started exchanging words and pushing themselves.

Mrs Udom eventually received Mrs Buhari.

Thousands of youths from Akwa Ibom State today stormed the State Headquarters of Nigerian Police, Ikot Akpan Abia to protest what they described as “maladministration, preference for thuggery and interference” by the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Udom Emmanuel.

The protesters, who were led by the State Youth Leader of the All Progressives Congress, Comrade Stephen Ntokekpo, Honourable Member Representing Itu State Constituency, Rt. Hon. Prince Idongesit Ituen, Former Transition Chairman of Abak Local Government Area, Barr. Emmanuel Udosen and Comrade Tony Umoh respectively urged the Akwa Ibom State Commissioner of Police to continue to discharge his constitutional duties.

Speaking, the State Youth Leader of the All Progressives Congress said the leadership of Akwa Ibom State under Governor Udom Emmanuel has been completely ‘comatosed’ citing the recent invasion of State House of Assembly with the aid of armed thugs which resulted in total breakdown of law and order.
“Specifically we thank the Inspector General of Police who in his preclusive rights has been able send men
of integrity to restore law and order. Our simple message is that the Governor should stop insulting our
elders and institutions with immediate effect or we will rise and send him home”.

Comrade Tony Umoh, the State Deputy Youth Leader expressed confidence in the police for stemming the
tide of criminality and accused the Governor of working against the security and stability of Akwa
Ibom State by importing strangers.

“We are for one man, one vote. We will resist any form of intimidation before, during and after the elections. Udom is going back to Lagos”.

In the same vein, the Honourable Member representing Itu State Constituency, Rt. Hon. Idongesit Ituen restated that power belongs to the people.

“On the recent pronouncement by the Governor that Commissioner of Police must be changed, the lawmaker expressed that the police commissioner is not for the Governor but the entire people of Akwa Ibom State. He reaffirmed total confidence in the police and promised total civil disobedience against any attempt to change the commissioner.”

Former Transition Chairman, Barr. Emmanuel Udosen declared implicit support and confidence of Akwa Ibom Youths for the State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Musa Kimo.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo was in Cairo, Egypt earlier today to headline the Nigeria Day at first Intra-Africa Trade Fair.

The VP was said to have showcased Nigeria’s trading prowess at the continental event.

According to Laolu Akande, his spokesman, the event also saw the signing of an AFREXIM $1B facility MOU with the NEPC and NATIPP to promote small scale businesses in Nigeria.
The VP is now back in Abuja, and is currently participating in this year’s Carol service at the Presidential Villa, with a host of others, including Pastor E.A Adeboye.

Yaya Toure is on his way to London in search of a new club after having his contract at Olympiacos terminated after just three months.The Ivorian midfielder enjoyed a successful eight years at Manchester City, and is now heading back to the UK to find a temporary club to train with.

Toure has played just four times this season – none of which a full 90 minutes – and he is keen to improve his fitness before signing a short-term deal this season.

Sportsmail understands Toure’s agent will approach a number of top-flight clubs, including the likes of West Ham and Crystal Palace, but any deal may be pricey for the clubs involved.

The 35-year-old has already turned down offers from China and MLS, with his heart set on a move back to the Premier League. Toure was granted British citizenship this year and has a family home in London, meaning his preferred move would be in or around the capital.

He signed for former club Olympiacos in September, having left Manchester City on a free transfer after eight years at the Etihad Stadium. However, he has played just five times, and parted ways with the club on Tuesday after attending training to say goodbye to his team-mates.

In a statement, the Greek club wrote: ‘Olympiacos FC and Yaya Toure would like to announce to the fans that they have mutually agreed to end their cooperation.‘Yaya is and remains an important member of the Olympiacos family, who has marked a central part of the history of the club. Time magazine has named Jamal Khashoggi and other killed and imprisoned journalists as its “person of the year” for 2018.

The magazine titled “the Guardians and the War on Truth” has four different Time covers that feature journalists from around the world.

Jamal Khashoggi, who was killed in the Saudi embassy in Turkey earlier this year, appears alone in one, while staff from the Capital Gazette, the US newspaper where five people were killed this year, feature in another.

Pictures of Maria Ressa, Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo appeared separately on the other two covers.

Ms. Ressa is the Editor of Rappler, a Philippine news website that always reports about the country’s leadership, while Reuters journalists Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo were imprisoned in Myanmar for investigating the massacre of Rohingya Muslims.

According to Time, they were chosen “for taking great risks in pursuit of greater truths, for the imperfect but essential quest for facts, for speaking up and for speaking out”.
