Travel / Colin O’brady Becomes The First Person To Complete A Solo Trek Across Antarctica by nigeriapenmedia: 8:57pm On Dec 27, 2018

Colin O’Brady, an American adventurer has become the first person to complete a solo trek across Antarctica without assistance of any kind.

O’Brady, 33, took 54 days to complete the nearly 1,000-mile (1,600-kilometer) crossing of the frozen continent from north to south. “I accomplished my goal: to become the first person in history to traverse the continent of Antarctica coast to coast solo, unsupported and unaided,”

O’Brady wrote in an Instagram post after covering the final 77.5 miles in 32 hours. “While the last 32 hours were some of the most challenging hours of my life, they have quite honestly been some of the best moments I have ever experienced,” he wrote.

“I was locked in a deep flow state the entire time, equally focused on the end goal, while allowing my mind to recount the profound lessons of this journey. I’m delirious writing this as I haven’t slept yet.”

His voyage was tracked by GPS, and live updates of the trip were provided daily on his website colinobrady.com. O’Brady and an Englishman, Army Captain Louis Rudd, 49, set off individually on November 3 from Union Glacier in a bid to be the first to complete a solo, unassisted crossing of Antarctica. In 1996-97, a Norwegian polar explorer, Borge Ousland, made the first solo crossing of Antarctica but he was wind-aided by kites on his voyage.

Here’s how they spend their three-day Sandringham celebration…

Christmas Eve
The Royals descend on Sandringham in the afternoon on December 24 – joining the Queen, 92, and Prince Philip, 97, who travelled up on Thursday.

There’s a set schedule for the arrivals, with the most junior Royals turning up first.
The family break with British tradition and open their presents after a 4pm afternoon tea on Christmas Eve, as the Germans do, and it’s only gag gifts allowed.

“They enjoy a bit of a giggle – they have a tremendous sense of humour,” Alexandra Messervy, who worked for the Royals, told Yahoo.

Prince Harry, 34, famously gave his grandma a shower cap with ‘Ain’t Life A B****’ written on it in 2013.

And Kate Middleton, 36, previously gave her brother-in-law a ‘grow your own girlfriend’ kit.
While most of us are slobbing around in our festive PJs, the Royals are dressed to impress – with a strict black tie dress code for dinner at 8.15pm on Christmas Eve.

They enjoy martinis before the meal and a selection of liquers after. Cheers!

Christmas Day
The Royal couples part ways on Christmas morning, when the men head downstairs for a Full English at 8.30am sharp.

The hearty fry up includes eggs, bacon, mushrooms, kippers and grilled kidneys –according to the Queen’s former chef Darren McGrady.

While the ladies tend to enjoy a light breakfast of sliced fruit, half a grapefruit, toast and coffee in their rooms. The Queen’s tray is delivered at precisely 9am.

And the Royals aren’t the only ones who split up on Christmas morning.

Etiquette expert Grant Harrold told us it’s common for married women to remain upstairs for breakfast in posh households, although single ladies should come downstairs and be “sociable”.

Breakfast is followed by the annual 11am trip to the St Mary Magdalene Church in Sandringham, to be greeted by a crowd of Royal fans waiting outside.

One fan Karen Anvil, 40, hit the jackpot last year when she made £40,000 from an iconic photo of the Fab Four strolling towards church.

The single mum has quit her job, supported her daughter’s nursing education and taken her first holiday abroad thanks to her proceeds from the snap.

Prince George, five, Princess Charlotte, three, and Prince Louis, eight months, are all yet to make an appearance at the service – although this could be the first year for the future king.

Kate and Wills’ eldest were papped at a Christmas Day church service two years ago, when they celebrated in Berkshire with the Middletons.

Christmas dinner is served at 1pm – and it’s a traditional feast with roast turkey, potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce and Brussels sprouts.

It’s the only day of the year the Royal chef is allowed to enter the dining room, to carve the bird at the table before enjoying a glass of whiskey with Her Maj.

The main is followed by Christmas pudding, which is served with brandy butter and brandy sauce an hour later.

The kids are said to eat separately in the nursery, at half 12.

The Queen also served a Christmas lunch on December 19, to celebrate with family members like Zara Tindall and Lady Louise Windsor – who won’t be joining them on the day.

There will be no festive films for the Royals on Christmas Day, with the family only allowed to watch one thing on the box – the Queen’s Speech.

Pre-recorded and shown at 3pm, the Queen has done a televised Christmas broadcast every year since 1957.

She doesn’t like to watch herself, and is said to go for a walk around Sandringham’s 8,000 hectare grounds instead.

After this, the Royals keep themselves entertained with Charades – which we’re sure former actress Meghan Markle, 37, will love.

Royal running order
CHRISTMAS EVE
Arrivals throughout the afternoon
4pm: Afternoon tea, followed by gag presents
8.15pm: Black tie dinner
CHRISTMAS DAY
8.30am: Full English downstairs for the men
9am: The Queen gets her breakfast in bed
11am: Sandringham church service
1pm: Christmas lunch
2pm: Pudding
3pm: Queen’s speech followed by Charades
8.15pm: Buffet dinner
Christmas is a time for feasting and the Royals are no different to the rest of us in this way.

They enjoy an evening buffet at 8.15pm – but don’t expect to see turkey cold cuts or sausage rolls on the menu.

The gang will tuck into a freshly roasted ham instead.

No-one’s allowed to go to bed before the Queen, who’s normally up until midnight on Christmas Day.

The family reportedly change clothes five times on December 25 alone, with Kate Middleton admitting she was feeling the pressure at a charity event just before her first visit to Sandringham in 2011.

Boxing Day

Boxing Day sees another hearty fry up, followed by the annual pheasant shoot.

News By NIGERIAPEN.COM.NG

What could have resulted in a major fire incident in the Enugu metropolis in the early hours of yesterday was averted following the quick intervention of the Enugu State Fire Service.

The campaign headquarters of the state All Progressives Congress (APC) factional governorship candidate, George Ogara, had been engulfed by fire before the fire fighters intervened.

Incidentally, the campaign office, which had been locked up for sometime now is located beside the office of Senator Ayogu Eze, who has been recognised by the party and Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as the state APC governorship candidate.

The fire partly burnt two branded campaign vehicles of Ogara with President Muhammadu Buhari and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama’s photographs on the premises.

Also, the windscreens of three other buses were smashed, thereby creating the impression that yet unidentified persons may have started the fire.

Chief Fire Officer in Enugu State, Okwudili Ohaa, who confirmed the incident, said it occurred about 2 a.m. yesterday.

Days after fire gutted about 25 shops attached to the palace of the Elekunpa of Ekunpa, Oba Kosoko, Kazeem, in the Shibiri area of Ojo Local Government Area, Lagos State, business owners, whose shops were affected by the inferno have yet to recover from the shock. PUNCH Metro observed during a visit to the palace that some of the victims had resorted to auctioning the remainder of their goods, while others, who had sustained burns from the fire, were nursing their injuries.

One of the victims, Eucharia Abu, said a boy was pouring fuel into a working generator, which led to an explosion that caused all the shops attached to the palace to be burnt.

The Imo State indigene said, “Around 2pm, one of the boys employed at the Bet9ja shop was pouring fuel into a generator when the generator and the keg of petrol caught fire. Out of fear, he threw the keg away and ran for safety; and it was that burning keg that attracted another generator, before the fire spread to the food vendor, who was using gas to cook. It was when the fire got in contact with the gas that the whole place exploded and the inferno got out of control.

“The fire burnt the whole shops, including the goods stacked in them; all my goods were burnt, because I was completely unaware that my shop and many other had been affected from behind. But when we noticed the fire, some boys got water to put it out, while others climbed the rooftop and started cutting planks that could attract fire. And that was how they prevented it from spreading to the palace building. I lost goods worth over N100, 000, but a man who sells flour here lost goods worth over N5m.”

A food vendor, Selina Samson , whose shop was located beside the Bet9ja shop, said the fire made her to lose valuables worth over N1.4m.

The Ogun State indigene said, “I was in the shop washing the meat we bought from the market when I heard an explosion. When I looked outside, I saw that the generator we were using had caught fire and it had spread into my shop located beside the Bet9ja shop.

Politics / Don’t Disrupt 2019 Elections Or Embarrass Nigerians, FG Cautions Labour by nigeriapenmedia: 7:42am On Dec 22, 2018
News By Nigeriapen.com.ng

The Federal Government has urged the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to discard its December 31 ultimatum issued over the lingering disagreement between organised labour and state governments on the proposed N30, 000 national minimum wages.

Speaking to State House correspondents after yesterday’s Juma’at prayer session and a closed-door meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, made the appeal.
The organised labour had on Thursday given the ultimatum following Buhari’s statement on Wednesday when he presented the 2019 Appropriation Bill of N8.83trillion at the joint session of the National Assembly that a “high-powered technical committee” would be set up to device ways to ensure that implementation of the new minimum wage would not lead to an increase in the level of borrowing.

However, the President of the NLC, Ayuba Wabba, who addressed newsmen on Thursday, expressed organised labour’s reservation over the President’s position, saying that setting up a technical committee could not be a condition for passing the minimum wage report to the National Assembly, saying: “We reject in its entirety, the plan to set up another ‘high powered technical committee’ on the minimum wage. It is diversionary and a delay tactics.”

But Mohammed, who described the NLC as “a very patriotic union,” said he was confident the organised labour would not do anything to embarrass the government or Nigerians. He said: “The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) is a very patriotic union and I am very confident that they will not do anything that will embarrass the government or do anything that is going to worsen the situation.

“Continuous engagement, I think, is the key. We will continue to engage them and I think they do also fully understand what the challenges are, and both parties are determined to ensure that a common ground is arrived at which will be comfortable for all.”

The minister, who briefed the President on the activities of his ministry, said he made a portrait of Buhari in five major Nigerian attires- Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo, Efik and one in suit, adding: “It is reminiscent of the portrait we use during this campaign. On Senate President Bukola Saraki’s comment on the budget proposal, the minister said it was not the practice of the executive to exchange words with other arms of government, adding: “They are independent, we are independent. To the best of our knowledge, we presented a budget, given the circumstances of our resources this year.
