Computers / Taiwan-based Multinational Computer, Asus Unveil Its Gold And Leather Laptop by nigeriapenmedia: 4:28pm On May 27, 2019
News By Topmag.pw

Asus is celebrating its 30-year anniversary with a special edition laptop.

The Asus ZenBook Edition 30 includes a white leather lid cover and an 18-karat rose gold logo that looks a lot like Star Trek’s starfleet insignia. Asus hasn’t gone full leather like HP’s leather Folio tablet / laptop hybrid, but that does mean this latest ZenBook is a traditional laptop through and through.

The leather is hand selected,” Asus chairman Jonney Shih explains “Each panel cover is maticulously sewed by a master tailor.” Asus is also supplying special accessories for this leather laptop, including a pearl white mouse and leather sleeve. This isn’t the first time Asus has experimented with leather on laptops, though. Asus first launched its leather-clad S6F laptop in 2006 with the lid and palm rests both covered in leather.

Inside the ZenBook Edition 30 there’s Intel’s 8th Gen Core i7 processor, Nvidia’s GeForce MX250 discrete graphics, up to 16GB of RAM, and PCIe SSD storage. This 13-inch laptop also has Asus’ bezel-free display with a 95 percent screen-to-body ratio. Asus is also including its ScreenPad, that puts a screen in the trackpad.

Asus hasn’t revealed pricing or a release date yet, but given the company is pitching this as premium and it’s limited edition, this is not going to be a cheap 13-inch laptop.

Politics / Insecurity: Soyinka Tells FG Not TO Ignore Obasanjo Boko Haram’s Comment by nigeriapenmedia: 10:30am On May 23, 2019
News By Nigeriapen.com.ng

The Nobel laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka support Former President Olusegun Obasanjo over his recent comments imputing ethno-religious motive to Boko Haram and Islamic State’s West Africa Province.

Professor Wole Soyinka delivers a speech during the opening of the fourth edition of African drum festival at the Abeokuta city centre amphitheatre in Ogun State, southwest Nigeria, on April 25, 2019.

Obasanjo made the comment on Saturday in Delta State while the Federal Government, in a statement by Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, on Tuesday, lampooned Obasanjo, saying he was seeking to divide Nigeria in his old age.

However, Soyinka flayed the Federal Government for ignoring the call for collaborative efforts to combat insecurity as suggested by Obasanjo.

Soyinka spoke at the United Bank for Africa, UBA, symposium, tagged: “Africa’s history redefined: Our past, a path to the future.’’ Soyinka, whose relationship with Obasanjo is far from cordial, said with collaboration, “unity is possible even in the plurality of our languages.”

Politics / Egypt, Ethiopian Airlines Running Drug Cartels In Nigeria, Says Dabiri-erewa by nigeriapenmedia: 8:22pm On May 22, 2019
News By Nigeriapen.com.ng

Chairman of the Nigeria Diaspora Commission (NDC), Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has accused Egypt and Ethiopian Airlines of running drug cartels across Nigeria’s international airports.

Dabiri-Erewa stated this on Wednesday during an investigative hearing by an ad-hoc Committee of the Senate set up to look into the circumstances leading to the arrest last December of a Nigerian lady, Zainab Aliyu by Saudi Arabian authorities.

Dabiri-Erewa told the committee that, “We have other foreign and local Airlines operating at our Airports. But Egyptian and Ethiopian Airlines have drug cartels operating at our International Airports. They operate alongside local collaborators. It is not Air Peace, not Arik Air, but Egyptian and Ethiopian Airlines”.

Chairman of the Committee, Senator Kabiru Gaya, demanded to know the status of the scanners at the nation’s airports across the country.

In response, the Airport Chief of Security at the Federal Airport Authority (FAAN), Mr. El-Yakub Usman Lamir, said that scanners at the Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano, were not configured to detect drugs.

Lamir added that there were 15 security agents involved in checking luggages at the point of entry and exit but that the number had been reduced as a result of frequent complaints by air travelers.

On his part, Mr Mustapha Abdallah, who represented the chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), also disclosed that the agency did not have enough German trained sniffer dogs.

Abdallah said, “Throughout the federation, NDLEA only has 14 sniffer dogs stationed in Lagos and we don’t even have one to detect drugs at the Aminu Kano International Airport at all.

Business / NCC: MTN Has Paid N275bn SIM Infraction Fine by nigeriapenmedia: 8:59am On May 22, 2019
News By Nigeriapen.com.ng

The Nigerian Communications (NCC) yesterday disclosed that MTN Nigeria has so far paid N275 billion to the Federal Government as part of the N330 billion imposed on the telco for failing to disconnect unregistered SIMs.

Described as a landmark sanction in the industry, the regulator had initially imposed N1.04 trillion fine on MTN for the infraction. That was, however, reduced to N330 billion after months of negotiations.

Part of the fallout of the negotiated terms of payment of the fine was the listing of MTN on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE), and that was done last week.
According to NCC, based on the staggered payment arrangement, MTN now has a deadline of May 31 to pay the sixth and final tranche of the balance of N55 billion.

After six months of negotiation and re-negotiation over the fine which led to the reduction to N330 billion, it was agreed that MTN would pay a balance of N280 billion in six tranches. This was in addition to the “goodwill” payment of N50 billion earlier made by MTN to the government.

Specifically, MTN began the payment structure with the payment of N30 billion into NCC’s Treasury Single Account (TSA) with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) 30 days from the date of the agreement dated June 10, 2016.
Subsequently, MTN paid N30 billion on March 31, 2017; N55 billion on March 31, 2018; N55 billion on December 31, 2018 and on March 31, it paid N55 billion.

It will be recalled that the NCC, on October 20, 2015, imposed a fine of N1.04 trillion on MTN for infraction of the provision of the NCC Telephone Subscribers Registration Regulations 2011; for failure to disconnect 5.2 million improperly-registered Subscriber Identification Modules (SIM) lines within the prescribed deadline, because these lines had economic activities on them without proper registration.

In agreement reached by the parties involved in a way to avoid decision likely to cripple business interest of the operators the Commission regulates, it was also agreed that MTN shall apologise to Nigerians, subscribe to the compulsory observance of Code of Corporate Governance for Telecoms Industry as well as undertake immediate steps to ensure its listing on the NSE.

Phones / Huawei Founder, ren Zhengfei Says US Restrictions Won’t Affect Its 5G Plans by nigeriapenmedia: 1:34am On May 22, 2019
News By Nigeriapen.com.ng

On Tuesday Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei Disregard US attempts to block his company’s global ambitions, saying the United States underestimates the telecom giant’s strength.

Ren Zhengfei spoke to Chinese media days after President Donald Trump issued orders aimed at thwarting Huawei’s business in the United States, the latest salvo in a months-long effort to stop the company’s charge to the top of the leaderboard in next-generation 5G technology.

“The current practice of US politicians underestimates our strength,” Ren Zhengfei said, according to transcripts from state-run media.

Interestingly,”Huawei’s 5G will absolutely not be affected. In terms of 5G technologies, others won’t be able to catch up with Huawei in two or three years,” he said.

Last week, Trump declared a “national emergency” empowering him to blacklist companies seen as “an unacceptable risk to the national security of the United States” — a move analysts said was clearly aimed at Huawei.

At the same time, the US Commerce Department announced an effective ban on American companies selling or transferring US technology to Huawei.

‘Can’t be isolated’
US Internet giant Google, whose Android mobile operating system powers most of the world’s smartphones, said this week it was beginning to cut ties with Huawei in light of the ban.

The move could have dramatic implications for Huawei smartphone users, as the telecoms giant will no longer have access to Google’s proprietary services – which include the Gmail and Google Maps apps – a source close to the matter told AFP.

But the Commerce Department on Monday issued a 90-day reprieve on the ban on the transfer of technology by allowing temporary licences.

“The US 90-day temporary licence does not have much impact on us, we are ready,” Ren said.

Huawei has sought to ease customers’ concerns over the Google announcement.

Ren Zhengfei said Huawei and Google are discussing how to respond to the ban, calling the US firm a “highly responsible company”.

A company spokesman in Australia said the US actions “will not impact consumers” with a Huawei tablet or smartphone in the country, or those planning to buy a device in the future.

As for Huawei’s access to key components, Ren said half of chips used in the company’s equipment come from the United States and the other half it makes itself.

“We cannot be isolated from the world,” Ren said.

“We can also make the same chips as the US chips, but it doesn’t mean we won’t buy them,” he added.

Ask Trump, not me
The Huawei confrontation has been building for years, as the company has raced to a huge advantage over rivals in next-generation 5G mobile technology.

U.S intelligence believes Huawei is backed by the Chinese military and that its equipment could provide Beijing’s intelligence services with a backdoor into the communications networks of rival countries.

For that reason, Washington has pushed its closest allies to reject Huawei technology, a significant challenge given the few alternatives for 5G.

While Australia has also banned Huawei from its 5G plans, the US has struggled to sway some countries, with Britain having reportedly approved a limited role for the Chinese company to help build a 5G network in the country.

Canada has been dragged into the battle. Its arrest of Ren’s daughter, Huawei chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou, in December on a US extradition bid linked to Iran sanctions violations was followed by the arrest in China of two Canadians, including a former diplomat.

The battle over Huawei has added to tensions in a trade war that has escalated between the world’s top two economies, with both sides exchanging steep increases in tariffs as negotiations have faltered.

China’s envoy to the European Union, Zhang Ming, called the move against Huawei “wrong behaviour”, adding “there will be a necessary response”.

Asked how long Huawei may face difficult times, Ren said: “You may need to ask Trump about this question, not me.”

Religion / Anglican Church Sacks Four Homosexual Priests (photos) by nigeriapenmedia: 7:10am On May 20, 2019
News By Nigeriapen.com.ng

Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) Diocese of Isiala Ngwa in Abia State has dismissed four priests for allegedly engaging in homosexuality.

This is contained in a dismissal notice signed by the Bishop in-charge of the Diocese, Rt. Rev. Temple Nwaogu.
It was also sent to all the church branches under the diocese.
The priests are listed as Rev. Canon Emmanuel Nwankwo, Rev. Kelechi Nwachukwu, Rev. Sunday Azubuike and Rev. Chris Achonye.

The dismissal came with automatic withdrawal of their licences.

The notice said the priests were dismissed following a proper investigation and recommendation submitted by the panel of enquiry which found them guilty of homosexual practices.
The notice also warned any member of the public dealing with the said priests to be careful, stressing that such could tarnish the image of the church of God.
When contacted on the phone, Bishop Nwaogu confirmed the dismissal of the four priests.

The bishop said the church did what was necessary in order to protect the body of Christ.

He said: “It is true. But we have done what we supposed to do as a church. We didn’t give the information for any other individual. The information was passed to all our bishops and our archbishops.

“We have a procedure in the Anglican Church. If there is any dismissal in the church, we forward to our primate and then our bishops so that the information will get to them.

“That is all we want. We don’t want any further thing. We have done what was expected of us to protect the body of Christ. That is the procedure for us in the Anglican Church.”

The dismissal came up barely a week after the Arochukwu/Ohafia Diocese of the Anglican Communion reportedly dismissed two priests for a similar offense.
