Nateevs and Nihilist, I don't know what your definitions of managerial brilliance are, but I personally think it is doing the right thing and getting results with a 'less perfect' team.

What makes you guys think an astute gaffer can't win the league with the current Citeh side? That team is the best in the country and some bald ninja somehow thinks those boys don't fit into his philosophy. If Pep can't mount a serious title challenge with the current Citeh side, then he's simply tactically inept and definitely over-rated.

Managerial brilliance has it that you must get results with that not-too-perfect team at your disposal. And that can be actualized by creating a setup they would thrive in, a system that would suit them. You should know when to park the bus and lock up. You should know when to go all out. You should know when to drop the ball and dominate play. You should just know when to do the right thing. That is managerial brilliance defined.

Conte is doing it with Chelsea having faltered with his first approach. Mourinho has done it at a lot of places (Porto 04 being the biggest). Carlo showed that class with Chelsea years ago, switching from a 4-3-3 to a diamond formation etc. Fergie achieved success at United playing different styles. Wenger was tactically on point in 2002.

These managers share two things in common; tactical flexibility and a winning philosophy. Those are the traits that differentiates them from Guardiola. Unlike the latter, these managers would succeed anywhere b'cos they create systems that suits what they have. It is the only philosophy they know not some tiki-taka balderdash.

Pep's decision to acquire an eleven that fits his ideology isn't a masterstroke. It is a no brainer what the move is really all about, he's simply showing once again how limited he is.
See below:
Where Nateevs and I differ is on the idea that short term failures are not seen to be too significant. I suspect that City are also prepared to go through the list of ex-Barca managers to get what they want if Pep doesn't sort things out very soon. I wont be surprised if Mansour goes to exhume Vilanova next sef.

Lalaboi even if you disbelieve me, or nateevs, or the hiring pattern...will you disbelieve the former Barca President too?

This was Sandro Rosell, then President of Barca in 2013:

There have been some offensive approaches from City, at all levels of the structure of the club, but no one wants to go.
'They wanted to fish here, but there were no fish left. We're talking about people at all levels of the Barca structure, not just players. Their attempts have been unsuccessful, though, as our employees are happy here.

Mind you, this was roughly 3 years before Pep. They were aggressively poaching Barca staff to the point where the President had to shout 'Ah an Kilode'

Don't dull it. City WANT Barca.

A full 4 years you say abi?

City's transfers in the last 3 years before pep had players like Mangala, Clichy, Fernando, Kolarov, Jesus Navas.

This only just yamayama'd your theories (and nateevs) that City had no players to suit pep style despite the fact that they had ex Barcelona personnel running the club and handling transfers.
I don't think you understand that that City has no pedigree. City is like a Chinese Bubble in the EPL. They've been throwing a lot money around to anybody that would take it, and that's not really going to change anytime soon. That's their main pull - Money, they have have even less history than Us cheesy

But if you look at the type of players they've been buying, there has been a particular style of player they've gone for recently - Technical players like KDB, Sterling, Fernandinho, Jovetic etc. Man City academy is now the La Masia of England. Even Manyoo's captain enrolled his son there.

I don't think it's a coincidence that the guy who turned down Mourinho and hired Pep at Barca in 2008 is now the CEO of Pep's current club. You might think so. I don't.

Bro.

Because Pep brough along his coaching crew from Barca and Bayern combined does not mean City are obsessed with being Barca. It is normal for a coach to bring his trusted hands with him to every club. . .Managers do this all the time and its not 'Evidence' that man city want to be like barca. Y'all just reaching!
Have you ever heard of a Vice President of a club following a coach anywhere before? cheesy

City hire a former Barca head of admin as CEO. City hired a former Barca DOF as well....a full 4 years before Pep

This means that the guy who runs the club from top to bottom, and the guy who buys players for the club both have a very specific type of football philosophy guiding their decisions.

If it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck....

Anyone that hires pep knows he's not staying there for long as he loses interest that quick. Even after he's gone, do you think the club will want to continue with his 'style'? How is Bayern faring without him now? Did they continue with his 'style? off course not, It was binned the minute they hired another manager. I cannot say the same about Barcelona because they eat drink and shiit that style of play from the academy.
Case in point - Barely a year into the City job he's talking about retiring. I can bet my saving on it, He won't do any longer than his previous spells at Bayern and Barca. so what is the point of hiring him if not to win immediately (Priority)
Man City did not sign Pep for his style per se...even though he is the embodiment of Tiki Taka football.

Pep is just a collectible card in the larger set that Sheik Mansour wants.

Over the last 4 years, City have hired

A former Barca director of football (Txiki Gbegiri-stain)
A former Barca perfomance Analyst (Carles Planchart)
A former Barca fitness coach (Lorenzo Buenaventura)
Former Barca Coaches (Rodolfo Borrell, Domenec Torrent, Mikel Arteta)
A former Head of External Relations (Manel Estiarte)
2 Former Barca doctors ( Cugat and Mauri)

Then to head it all, they hired a former Barca VP ( Ferran Soriano) to oversee the club admin as CEO and Barca's most iconic Coach (Pep) to oversee matters on the pitch

Mansour doesn't just want Pep, He want's Barca. Infact, I'm sure Messi is very much in his sights.

This is what Nateevs is alluding to - and evidence definitely appears to support his position to an extent.

Where Nateevs and I differ is on the idea that short term failures are not seen to be too significant. I suspect that City are also prepared to go through the list of ex-Barca managers to get what they want if Pep doesn't sort things out very soon. Antonio Conte is here and the headline news is that Diego Costa is available for this weekend's game with Hull on Sunday, live on Sky Sports 1HD, having 'fully recovered' from his back injury.

"Yes he is available for the game against Hull. He started to train on Tuesday with the rest of the team. He trained very well and he is fit. He hasn’t got any pain in his back."
Zing!!!

Good that Costa is back though....even if he is an Oloshi extraordinaire...

We've been through this. It is not public record. Only tabloids carried this news. No reputable article records this. If anything, reputable houses reported that "Everton are yet to receive a bid" in a best case scenario. In fact, many others state Chelsea were not even interested.
I only read the Guardian or the Times(to which I maintain a paid digital subscription)

there is no reason to say conte was not satisfied with his striking department because we didnt sign lukaku..

When we bidded 55m - 60 mil for lukaku Everton rejected it because they wanted 70-75mil. Even conte came clear to say " that the transfer market is crazy, players going in for the amount they are not worth, he also stated he doesn't want to just spend just to spend.

He wants the right players for the right price. Purely the figure Everton wanted wasn't right for him, he (conte) did not like the idea of spending such on a mere lukaku. So telling me Conte is not happy with his striking department because he wanted Lukaku but the club signed Batshuayi is pure fallacy.
I'm not sure if what I wrote was so difficult to understand or if you're being wilfully obtuse.

it is a public record that Chelsea wanted lukaku, but it was not a public nor private record that conte wanted lukaku.. And I remember conte saying all transfer done was through consults between him ,club and staffs..

Saying conte wanted lukaku and we gave him batshuayi is what I won't agree on..

About llorente its all rumours and nothing serious.
I think you just wanted to talk for the sake of talking.

The main point I made(which itself was a corollary to a previous point that the Manchester club top brass were ready to spend recklessly in a way that we arent) was that Conte is not satisfied with his striking options and gave you reasons why I came to that conclusion.

You're instead choosing to raise and argue a completely irrelevant point to the discussion.

Pep is an excellent coach,...i don't think he is doing that poorly with his first sojourn in the EPL for now....remember even Fergie struggled in his 1st few seasons at man united! Barca and bayern are always going to be the pankeres that he must be flogged with but he achieved "something" with them at least.....success is not always down to the players alone in soccer! He had some input!

He has a similar remit to jose as regards re-building an aging team even though I believe his job is more difficult as the spine of his squad are either average or on their last legs! The 2nd half of the season has a way of throwing up suprises....maybe he might be one of this season's suprises!
Time will tell but I agree that Pep is a great coach. But anyone can be a great coach with Messi on the roster. You don't even need to be alive - That's why he needs to prove himself here and now.

Let's see how he gets on.

if you followed the news well, you wil knw that it is conte that said he can't sign an average player for an outrageous amount of money, even though the money does nt belong to him. Conte was the one that made the deal nt to go through.
You should be the one to follow the news. Costa was expected to leave and Lukaku was the subject of a confirmed 55 million pound bid that Everton turned down.

Infact some papers reported that we went in again with an offer over 60m that was rejected.

Conte wants Lukaku. I will be more surprised if we DON'T sign him this summer.

nateevs:
But why should he? You posted an excerpt showing the agreement he had with his employers. 10 new players and doing it my way. Perhaps along the line, the discussion went as far as, "Gentlemen, if we don't get those players, we could struggle" and the gentlemen responded saying, "Okay, we believe in you, we are building for the future, just hang in there, we will back you up in the summer"

If anything, Chelsea has shown everyone this season, that finishing 10th means phuckall. With the right manager in place, and the right "SYSTEM" to back it up, you can win the league the season after. So why should he?
Of course, the promise of future additions for the long term should not preclude success in the short term - That's where I fault Pep.

Everton scored 2 goals with their first two shots on targets. That should not be happening regardless of the players you have.

Zabaleta was playing box to box ahead of Yaya Toure who was holding. Both don't have the legs to get up and down the pitch.

I don't believe in idealism - I believe that a manager should be flexible around his tactical philosophy, and not just hold stubbornly to a creed that he does not have the players to execute.

That's why I blame him.

How sure are you about this ??
Its a matter of public record that we went for Lukaku and bid up to 55m.

Batshuayi is very clearly not an option to Conte right now despite costing 33m.

The rumours about a move for Llorente were already swirling BEFORE Costa decided to act the fool again.

Its a logical deduction.

If Emenalo or whoever signs the check in Chelsea had agreed Stones will be a Chelsea player now
Exactly, Jose wanted Pogba- we reportedly offered over 60m before deciding enough was enough. He went to Manyoo and they gave him Pogba for almost 100m.

Conte said he wanted Lukaku. We threw 55m at Everton...they said they didn't want. Somebody upstairs said enough is enough and went to buy Batshuayi. We know Conte is not happy with what he has in the striking department but he can't don anything about it.

Conte at City would probably have gotten not just Lukaku senior, but his useless aburo, and their mum to work in thr club kitchen pounding yam.

When there's hype there's hype. That's the way football works.

While this is true, UK also have a lot of social programs which are funded by tax payers. All the public transport, housing and welfare programs can only be sustained with sky high taxes. In the UK I believe all these programs are financed with the very high taxes on everyone. If these taxes are lowered or cut in half, what then happens to the social services? will they be dropped?

Aside from 0rgasms and Bayern win, avoiding taxes is the next best thing
I'm talking Corporation Tax my guy not Income Tax.

Corporation Tax is the tax on a company's profits. Income Tax is in thr individual tax that you and I pay.

Wetin consign Big Business and Income Tax? grin

Now the average tax paying individual pays something called National Insurance- That's the tax that goes directly to Social services. Employers also pay National Insurance for each of their employees.

Then your pay council tax for where you live - That's goes to your Council e.g Local Government for local work

Then there's VAT, Road Tax and so on. Those ones won't change.

What Theresa May wants to do is tell business that she will charge them less in the UK than they do on the continent to make profits. Considering how far the likes of David Cameron's daddy ran to to get such Benefit (Bahamas and Panama), this will be Music to his ears... it then becomes a volume game.

Sure we'll take less tax per company, but there will be so many companies to tax it won't even matter. grin
