Secondly the distinction is immaterial.

Afterall the WPOTY votes don't discriminate by position which is why the likes of Yashin and Buffon have been recognised respectively as the best and second best PLAYERS in the world. Paolo Maldini has been recognised on several occasions as the 3rd best PLAYER in the world.

When you excell individually your position, you have a shot at individual recognition, hence Gerd Muller being recognised as the best PLAYER in the world in 1970.

If you say he's not a top 5 striker, no problem - name the 5. Simple.
