Ororo is literally going to be officially confirmed as the best player in thr world in just a few weeks, yet one Barka fanzine is writing rubbish on the interwebs. I am duty bound to reject both the messenger, thr message, and the envelope the message came in.

The quote is can the be split into two parts. The first part is Terry calling Messi the best. That bit is not in contest. I am not saying Terry did not say what he said

The second part of the post deals with Terry's motivations. My argument is that Terry wants to be known as the defender who shackled the World's best, and the second part of his post makes that abundantly clear.

He has already called Ororo the best in the past but cannot claim to have shackled Ororo. He can't claim to have shackled Ronaldinho. But he can claim to have Shackled Messi...so of course he will try and sell Messi as the best, which also allows him stake his own claim for best defender ever...

10 years later, he realised his opportunity to boost his credentials by hyping Messi as the best in the world so that he can claim the honour of successfully shackling the best player in the world.

Read Terry's statement again, he literally says as much here:

Lampard was a great player no doubt (Bayern were shyte that year btw) but when someone comes to tell us he was an elite AM in 2002 and even 2003 when Chelsea were still getting sonned by Viking of Norway then kasala go burst. As bad as he was he still did next to nothing at country level. High premium should also be placed on International footie. Life does not begin and end in the EPL
