An outcry is rising in Somalia as parliament considers a bill that would allow child marriage once a girl's sexual organs mature and would allow forced marriage as long as the family gives their consent.

The bill is a dramatic reworking of years of efforts by civil society to bring forward a proposed law to give more protections to women in one of the world's most conservative countries.

The new Sexual Intercourse Related Crimes Bill "would represent a major setback in the fight against sexual violence in Somalia and across the globe" and should be withdrawn immediately, the United Nations special representative on sexual violence in conflict, Pramila Patten, said in a statement yesterday.

The bill also weakens protections for victims of sexual violence, she said.

Already more than 45 per cent of young women in Somalia were married or "in union" before age 18, according to a United Nations analysis in 2014-15.

Somalia in 2013 agreed with the UN to improve its sexual violence laws, and after five years of work a sexual offences bill was approved by the Council of Ministers and sent to parliament.

Last year, however, the speaker of the House of the People sent the bill back "in a process that may have deviated from established law" asking for "substantive amendments," the UN special representative said.

The new bill "risks legitimising child marriage, among other alarming practices, and must be prevented from passing into law," UN human rights chief Michelle Bachelet said this week, warning that its passage would "send a worrying signal to other states in the region."

Thousands of people in Somalia are circulating a petition against the bill, including Ilwad Elman with the Mogadishu-based Elman Peace organisation.

As Somalia prepared to mark International Youth Day today, Elman tweeted this week: "I don't wanna see any Somali officials participating online to celebrate... when you're trying to steal their childhood away from them RIGHT NOW with the intercourse bill legalising child marriage."

The UN mission to Somalia in a separate statement has called the new bill "deeply flawed" and urged parliament to re-introduce the original one.

That original bill "will be vital in preventing and criminalising all sexual offences," the Somalia representative for the UN Population Fund, Anders Thomsen, said.

"Big moment for MPs to decide Somalia's future values," the British ambassador to Somalia, Ben Fender, has tweeted.

The contentious new bill comes as women's rights groups openly worry that the coronavirus pandemic and related travel restrictions in Somalia have worsened violence against women and female genital mutilation.

Nearly all Somali women and girls have been subjected to that practice.

Some 68 per cent of more than 300 service providers across the country have reported an increase in gender-based violence, including rape, since the pandemic began, UNFPA said in a report last month.

Nearly a third of respondents, including more than 750 community members, said they believed child marriages had increased in part because of economic pressures and in part because schools have been disrupted.

And in some cases, health facilities have closed, limiting access to care.

Houston police have arrested a man believed to be behind the disappearance of no less than 31 persons this past decade.
Ivan Fedorovitch Yanukovych, 56, could be linked to a number of mysterious disappearances in the area believe officials.

Yanukovych was interrogated by police after neighbors complained about him using a chainsaw late at night and reported the man being “covered in blood.”


“The suspect admitted to preying on unsuspecting delivery men from local restaurants, several postmen and even a number of Jehovah witnesses,” Assistant Chief Jeff Buchanan told reporters.

When police arrived on the scene, Yanukovych was found butchering a dead body in his garage and preparing what police officers described as “large quantities of ground meat” mixed in with an “aromatic blend of spices.”

“I never suspected he was a mass murderer. He would often invite all the neighbors to watch football at his house and host large barbecues for everybody and was super friendly,” one neighbor told reporters.

Yanukovych, 56, who lives with his mother, Anastasia Z. Yanukovych, 93, and who rents the house basement to a local student, seemed to blend into the community and never arouse suspicion from neighbors.

When interrogated by authorities, Yanukovych apparently showed some remorse about killing the delivery men and postmen who were “just doing their job” but said the Jehovah witnesses “really annoyed him” and wished he had “taken more out.”

Tom Duvall, a local Jehovah witness organization spokesman, said that he is relieved that “members of our local chapter can now feel safe” and that “these courageous souls have not ended in this vile man’s belly, but in God’s belly.”

A Saudi millionaire has been cleared of raping a teenager after claiming he might have accidentally penetrated the 18-year-old when he tripped and fell.

Property developer Ehsan Abdulaziz, 46, was accused of forcing himself on the young woman as she slept off a night of drinking on the sofa in his plush flat in Maida Vale, west London.

He had already had sex with her 24-year-old friend and said he might have fallen on top of the teenager while his penis was poking out the top of his underwear.

Married father-of-one Mr Abdulaziz was cleared of one count of rape following a trial at Southwark Crown Court.

The women met Mr Abdulaziz in the exclusive Cirque le Soir nightclub in the West End on 7 August last year.

Mr Abdulaziz, who had known the 24-year-old for around seven months, invited the friends to join him at his private £1,000-a-night table and bought both women a round of drinks.

He later offered them a ride home in his Aston Martin.

He had paid £1,000 for a private table in the club, and had bought both the girls a round of drinks.

The three went back to his apartment, where he offered them vodka before taking the 24-year-old into the bedroom for sex.

The teenager claimed she woke in the early hours of the morning to find Mr Abdulaziz on top of her, forcing himself inside her.

Outlining the case at the start of the trial last week, Jonathan Davies, prosecuting, had told the court: 'She said "what are you doing?" he said "it's fine" indicating that her friend was asleep. She got up to find her friend, tried to wake her but couldn't, she then tried to get out of the flat as quickly as she could.


'She was very upset about what had happened to her and because she couldn't wake her friend, she called two friends, she then called the police.'

When Mr Abdulaziz was arrested, the court was told he had responded: 'She'll have to prove it.'

Mr Abdulaziz said he had gone to wake the young woman to offer her a T-shirt to sleep in, or to offer to pay for a taxi home, but that she pulled him on top of her and placed his hand between her legs.

But he said she become angry when he had offered to call her a taxi and stormed into the bedroom to wake her friend.

In his evidence, Mr Abdulaziz demonstrated how the complainant had put her hand behind his head to pull her towards him, causing him to fall down.

He said: 'I'm fragile, I fell down but nothing ever happened, between me and this girl nothing ever happened.' He said traces of his DNA could have been found in her vagina because of the fall.

He also said it was possible he had semen on his hands after the sexual encounter with her friend.

Mr Abdulaziz told the court that after meeting the women at the club, he had initially offered to drive them to the 24-year-old's flat, but then changed directions and drove to his own home when the teenager asked him to join them for a late night drink.

On the way home he bought the two women some food and cigarettes at a 7/11 store in Notting Hill.

Once at his flat, he took the complainant's friend into his bedroom for sex, while she fell asleep on his sofa.

At around 4.30am she woke up to find Mr Abdulaziz had forced her shorts to one side and was having sex with her, the court heard.

But Mr Abdulaziz claimed she had tried to seduce him and had pulled him on to her when he went to offer her a T-shirt to make her more comfortable.

After swabs taken from the alleged victim found traces of his semen in her vagina, he said he may have accidentally penetrated her when he fell on her as she pulled him on top of her.

During the trial, Judge Martin Griffiths permitted the rare step of allowing 20 minutes of Mr Abdulaziz's evidence to be heard in private.


After the press were allowed back into court, Mr Abdulaziz insisted that he respected women.

Jason Bartfeld QC, defending, asked: 'Are you in the habit of meeting a girl for the first time at a club and then taking her back home?'

He replied: 'It never happened in my life, I always respect ladies and I have a sister myself.'

The businessman insisted he had never had a one night stand in the 20 years he had lived in London.

Talking about the complainant's friend, he said: 'She's a very sweet girl, a very nice girl, I see her quite often, I see these girls, they go out quite often.'

He added: 'A couple of times we were going to go for dinner but it didn't happen because I was travelling and I was a little bit busy.'

Mr Abdulaziz said the teenager had been very excited about the car and asked if she could sit in the front.

He insisted that it was the complainant's idea to invite him to the flat they were staying in, prompting him to suggest they go to his apartment.

He added: 'One of them said "do you have a friend? They can come as well", I said to be honest I don't have any friends that I can call to come over at 4 o'clock in the morning.'

He said they entered the building through the secure underground car park, before heading up to his flat for a drink.

Mr Abdulaziz offered them some of his designer Roberto Cavalli vodka, but let them pour it themselves, he said. He then took the older woman into the bedroom for sex.

'[Afterwards] I went to the sitting room to switch off the TV and drink some water – I saw her, she was in an awkward situation the way she was laid down,' he said.

He continued: 'I found her a T-shirt, I found her the longest T-shirt so that she would be comfortable, I said “there's a T-shirt, if you want to sleep here you're welcome, if not I will get you a taxi”.

'Her eyes were closed, she opened her eyes straight away, it was like a giggle and straight away she kissed me and I kissed her back – I'm not proud of it, but I would never have done anything else.'


He claimed she put her hand on the back of his head, then placed his hand on her crotch.

'I think she was embarrassed because she knew I wasn't up for anything, I said [your friend] is sleeping here and if you want you can go.'

In her evidence, the complainant claimed she had pushed him off her, but he said if she had done so he would have fallen backwards over the coffee table.

'If she had pushed me I would have ended up in hospital,' he said. 'I'm very fragile, it's very, very narrow between my table and the couch.'

The complainant said he had pushed her back down when she had tried to free herself, but he said: 'For me, a man who raises his hand to a woman is not a man, I've never ever in my life raised my hand to a woman.'

It emerged during cross examination that Mr Abdualziz was married and cohabiting with his wife and 10-year-old son at the time of the incident, but that his wife and child were spending the summer in her native Czech Republic.

Mr Abdulaziz insisted that he and his wife were separated and had not had sex for the last eight years. He said he slept alone, while his wife and son shared the second bedroom.

'I never went out to pick up a girl in my life,' he said.

He denied he had gone to the fancy nightclub to try and meet women or to drink.

Mr Davies said: 'You don't go to pick up women, you don't go to drink alcohol, what do you do with your £1,000 table?'

'To be with friends, they are professionals,' he replied.

When asked if he was 'kind' to the two women, he replied: 'I'm kind with every human being, I was exactly how any gentleman should behave with a lady.'

Mr Abdulaziz admitted that he went to rouse the sleeping girl wearing only his underpants, and said that his erect penis may have been poking out.

Mr Davies said: 'You're 45 and you know there was a you knew there was a young girl sleeping in your living room and it was okay for you to walk in there with your penis sticking out of the top of your pants?

'You've said that you may have walked into the living room with your penis sticking out of your pants.'

Mr Abdulaziz replied: 'I didn't go in there to have a conversation, I just went in there to switch off the TV and have a glass of water.'

'It's my place,' he added.

The alleged victim said she ran to the bedroom to try and wake her friend before escaping from the flat.

He claimed she never entered the bedroom to speak to her friend.

When she gave evidence to the court, the teenager had said she had gone into the bedroom but was unable to wake her friend, and feared she might be dead.

She said she fled the flat but did not call the police immediately because she did not want to 'aggravate the situation'.

Mr Bartfeld put to her: 'If you think your friend is dead you can't really aggravate the situation - she's not going to be more dead than you thought she was before.'

Mr Bartfeld said the teenager had lied because she was embarrassed Mr Abdulaziz did not want to have sex with her.

He said to her: 'The reality is he never put his penis inside you, he never even tried to have sex with you.'

The jury cleared Mr Abdulaziz of one count of rape after half an hour of deliberations.

Just seconds after meeting each other in person for the first time, Erica Harris and Arte Vann got “married” in the middle of LA/Ontario International Airport in Ontario, California, this past Friday.

The spontaneous wedding was a fitting one for the nontraditional couple who “randomly met on Instagram about a year ago,” according to Harris, a 36-year-old, formerly single mother of three from Murietta, California.

She found Vann — the “man of my dreams” from Earlton, New York — through his comments on a mutual friend’s page. Like Harris, Vann was part of a niche community of writers sharing poems through the social photo-sharing app.

The two flirted in the form of “likes” and “comments” on each other’s poems and photos, which eventually progressed to direct messages and then to long phone calls at night, Harris said.

Three weeks ago, a mutual friend in an Instagram group chat with Harris and Vann asked, “Why don’t you guys just get hitched already?” Harris said. The two then got “#InstaEngaged” and immediately made plans to “elope,” she said.

Vann, 40, informed his landlord he would be leaving his apartment in New York, resigned from his job as head chef at a local restaurant and bought a one-way ticket to California, Harris said, adding that “the rest is history.”

After his plane landed this past Friday evening, the two held each other for the first time, exchanged rings and vows and got “#InstaMarried,” Harris said. She added that they had a honeymoon adventure in San Diego this past weekend.

Footage posted online purports to show a Texas woman give birth to a 10-pound baby in the passenger seat of a car while her husband drives to a Houston-area birth center.

According to the video, verified by a licensing company, the couple had been driving for approximately 45 minutes when the woman’s water broke and she became screaming.

Moments later, the woman delivered the baby.

When Winnie Makasani, who was seven months pregnant, started having pains, she didn’t know she was about to have a horrific experience.

The 23-year-old went to relieve herself when she arrived at the local clinic but she pushed her baby out and it fell into the toilet!

Rachel Maluleke (26), who was at the clinic told Daily Sun: “Winnie was sitting next to me before she rushed out to the toilet. After 10 minutes, she came back crying. She had blood on her hands and was crying so much she couldn’t speak.

“She told me she had accidentally delivered her baby into the toilet. The nurse then called the police.”

A nurse said: “Emergency services opened one of the pipes at the back of the toilet. We couldn’t believe our eyes when we discovered the baby was still alive. It’s a miracle she lived. She was down there for six hours.”

Winnie and her baby were taken to the Hospital.

“We rushed to the clinic with the risk management team and we were able to save the baby,” an officer said.
