With the New Year still in its prime, I ran a facebook ad campaign, where I summarized the nitty-gritties of mini importation. Among every question asked, one in particular stood out. How To Import From China Without Traveling To China.


This article will do justice to that and bridge the misunderstanding of the concept of traveling out or being scammed.


First of all, I’d like to use Jumia as an instance.
Usually before you buy from Jumia, you create an account with them, hit the search box and type in the name if the good(s) you intend buying.

Second, after having seen the good(s) and the price(s) attached, you either pull out your debit card and pay online. As at the time of writing this post, Jumia and Konga have both stopped pay on delivery services in Nigeria.

Third, after having being debited for the cost of the purchase, your order details (numbers and others) are sent to you. Then your shipping begins.

Fourth, based on your location and agreement with the e-commerce platform used, your goods get to your house during the assigned period for delivery.


This is the same routine, to follow while engaging in mini-importation.

The word ‘mini’ according to Merriam Webster’s dictionary; which of course is my favorite, defines it as “small in relation to others of the same kind”.

Importation on the hand, is defined as the “act of bringing in a product into a country, to be sold”.


In 2012 when I wanted to first venture into mini-importation, due to the buzz made by Onome Maureen (I don’t know where she is today), I wanted to start with android tablets then.

So I went on to Aliexpress, saw the tablets but they were expensive.

The only tweak then, was to engage in a chat with the seller to help reduce the price for you because you promised to make him your regular customer.

One of the sellers decided to sell 4 tablets to me at the cost of $100 per tablet from the initial $110 price. Then, a dollar was equal to 180 naira.


Later I stumbled upon the Chinese Wholesaler site which was then difficult to navigate through. Then I discovered that the original cost of that tablet was $50. I was shocked.


I had already paid and there was nothing else I could do and shipping had commenced, which of course took a month plus to get to Lagos.

Before now, it usually took a month plus or cost quite a whole lot, in most cases, shipping fees used to be costlier than the products you purchased.

But as we speak, it takes between 48 hours – 7 days to get your shipped products to Lagos, Nigeria.

Literaly speaking, eCommerce is taking over the world as it is today.

One of the major ways to join the cliques of eCommerce other than drop shipping, is actually Mini-importation. This refers to the buying of SCALABLE products from China, US, UK or any other country outside yours (technically you are an African reading this, if you aren’t oh well).

Also, car owners are willing to spend money on GPS trackers for the security of their luxury or new cars. No one wants to be a victim of car theft.


Health Products: if an HIV patient has just =N=10 million and he hears that =N=12 million can cure his HIV, he will be willing to go borrow money just to make sure he is free off it. In that case, there are products that help solve health issues. Diabetic blood sugar level measuring devices can help a diabetic patient control or measure their sugar level without going to the hospital 24/7.


Skin Care or Beauty Products: no 21st century lady wants to have acne on her pretty face, no 21st century lady wants to have a darkened or blackened face. Most persons who are fat will do anything to trim down their fat and become sexy or slim. Anyone with a skin issue will be ready to part with their money as far as you are able to provide them with a solution to their problems. It’s more like they pay you for using your own brains.


Labor Saving Devices: picture a scenario where you are traveling with your family, then all of a sudden your car tire goes flat, maybe as a result of your not being able to check before living the house. Now in the middle of the express way, you will not have access to a tyre expert to help pump your bad tyre. At that time, you’ll be at the mercy of any yahoo who comes your way and says he can fix your car tyre. Now look at this, can you proffer a solution to this issue? Yeah you can, there are car tyre pumping devices on the internet that can simply inflate a deflated car tyre. All you need do is, plug the cord to the cigarette spot in your car (same slot were you charge your mobile phone in the car), take the other end and attach it to the tube opening of your car tyre. Now when it comes to shipping the goods and procurement, there are agents or procurement officers, who you can send money to in your local currency.(Naira for my country Nigeria).

Most of these Chinese procurement officers work for logistics companies who ship your goods for lesser amounts than DHL,UPS and the likes. Tops expenses are $4 per kg and some other little naira for the customs.

Other than that, nothing else.

When it comes to the shipping, there are two types:

Normal or Cargo Shipping: this takes 7-10 days to get your location from China. This shipping is mostly used when you aren’t in a hurry to sell or you simply want that as a choice. The cost stays at $4 per kg (this is the cost of the logistics unlike DHL that charges humongous fees) and =N=700 (per kg) for customs.

Express Shipping: this usually takes 24 – 72 hours to get to Nigeria. Mostly used if you are in a hurry or if you are importing anything like creams etc. The cost is usually $7 per kg and some extra Naira for customs clearing.

Yes they do, but you gotta be careful though.

What I think can be done, is to get the contact of the dispatch from either your customer who might be receiving the details from the courier company or from the courier company itself....now psyche the dispatch that you'll give him something it could be 500 recharge card, if he delivers quickly for you....and watch the rest slide....

First I started with Mtn 22gb and what I did was allow connection on a timely basis..and for each hour i collected #400, 2hours #1000. the mtn UI shows you everything from who has connected to what amount of data and how long they have exhausted.


Then I saw much profit when I cracked the Mtn mifi and switched to Airtel unlimited and I increased the price to 500 naira per hour with unlimited download.but still I controlled data consumption.

3. Wireless router or Wifi extender. (this costs 12k maximum pics attached)

When the above is ready,
1. recharge the wireless modem with an unlimited plan (for airtel 10k or 2ok), for mtn you can get a plan that can be very substantive.
2. With the wireless router or wifi extender, you further boost your network signal farther than your location.
3. You can manage or control the data consumption, block and deactivate anyone connected to the network from your pc because the Mtn 4g Mifi comes with such privileges.

With this you can be a data service provider in your school. You can go as far as charging students money in exchange for data you can be supplying them. I recommend the Mtn Mifi because you can easily see people connected to your network and I haven't used that of Airtel.

With your android phone or laptop you can connect, disconnect or even block anyone from accessing the network.

I did this out of curiosity in a school I visited and earned 250k..just like that.

When you buy or purchase the Mifi modem and Wifi extender, they come with instructions that will make you understand the way everything works.

If you are serious with this, it can serve as a means of income for you.
