Expertt: Good day all, please how many batteries and solar panels can power a 15kw Inverter for 12 hours assuming the total load on the Inverter is 12kw continuously for 12 hours . Note: the load consists of mainly pumps, electric motors and 1kw electric heater. Thanks You need a minimum of 20kva diesel generator.. A 15kw inverter cannot power 12kw load for 12hrs. The cost implications of powering a 12kw load is not for your everyday diy |

adolphus08: Good morning nairalanders, I am forced to post because of an inverter installation that will not allow me move forward to see if anyone can proffer a solution. Around end of October last year I proposed and installed a Zinox Ipower 5KvA Transformer series for a client. Right from the first day after connecting the batteries it didn't work, instead a fault light came on. I called the Zinox people and they said I should bring it to their service center. Which we did. It took almost two months of going back and forth to get a replacement. I even insisted on using one of their installers to do it so they will not say my installation was faulty. They installed it toward the end of December. They used circuit breakers for the battery connection and phcn connection . A day after the installation one of the circuit breakers( the one connected to batteries) tripped off they switched it back on. Just Just last Sunday at 9pm, the clients wife called to say the same circuit breaker suddenly got burnt. I asked them to buy another one to replace it the next day. This they did only to find out that the inverter has packed up once again. I called them and as usual they said I should bring it to their office. Which the client said he won't do till the installer comes to drop the inverter.
Guys, this client had a genus 3KvA inverter which I installed for him three years back, which we didn't even use any of those safety gadgets for and I never received a single call for support from them. The same 3kva genus inverter was removed and has been working in another location since November last year with no problems reported.
Ever since I replaced it with the Zinox 5KvA Ipower inverter it has been one problem after the other even with all the safety gadgets in place.
The client who paid for this inverter 3 months ago hasn't even enjoyed it for up to a month. I have even lost all the profit I made on it. But my main concern is not to lose my reputation and the clients trust.
I have used other Ipower products in the past without issues and so I wonder why their transformer series which should be more rugged is now a stumbling block.
I would please like if someone who has used or is familiar with that kind of inverter can tell me his experience and what he did to resolve it. Thanks and over to you nairalanders Neva take Nigerian companies seriously when they talk about warranty coz they have no such policy or knowledge |

mcTrinity: Sorry for the loss... It's a very big one.
Though since this Luminous Blue came out, I've only been hearing bad reviews for it. Their yellow mode was a little better. As a matter of fact, a Solar Company here in Eket carried out a capacity test on the Luminous blue and got about 87%.... Very poor I must say.
I also know a boutique that is using 1.5KVA/24V Sukam falcon plus with the Luminous blue. Loads are just the lights. No fan sef, just lights and they have never drained it to alarm level. After 9 months, another story... And two or three other negative feedbacks from users. I've been discouraging people from going for this Blue model
I believe it's a factory issue. Same thing that happened to PRAG battery sometime. After they modified their battery and it started have early failures.
I might not be able to suggest the best battery, because I've not actually used or installed all. But Over 5 years now, the two batteries I can vouch for are Quanta and Safepower.... Both are Indian
From Chinese angle, I've also come to trust Mpower (distributed by AirWave Ltd)... I do use them for clients on low budget.
All the aforementioned are from my personal perspective.
As for batteries always being on float charge posing a problem, to me it's a fallacy. As long as the float voltage of the charging source (Inverter or PV) is within the recommended voltage of the battery manufacturer. For example, almost all inverters have a default float voltage of 13.7/13.8V. But Quanta strictly recommends 13.5V as the float voltage. So question is what happens when you have Quanta batteries that are being subjected to constant float voltage of 13.8V? These days, people just randomly choose Inverter and batteries without any form of regards to conformity and compatibility.
Finally, looking at your setup, it can be seen that your battery arrangement calls for long battery interconnecting links at some point. I hope ALL the links are same length and same size. Not that some would be short and others long...
As for the Battery balancer, if it's HA02, then I believe it shouldn't be a problem. Unless it's all those Sukam and few other "unbalacing" balancers.
Once again, sorry for that heavy loss. 12 batteries no be beans, even if you're Chevron manager ( lolzzz)
Cheers Thank you very much Coughing out N1.4m for batteries is not funny at all. I double checked the set voltages so over charging is not the issue. The charge controller is premium brand Victron and the inverter is Felicity. I have used HA02 battery balancers for years without issues. The 3 units of 4 batteries are connected to a Busbar so the Lenght of the wire (35mm²) are of the same Lenght. I have made up my mind to change the batteries. |
Satellite TV Technology › Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by nonoski: 7:47am On Jan 20, 2020 |
earthrealm: @nonoski. 1. Verify that the charge controller charge voltage settings are in line with luminous batt, i once made an error after a battery swap of not changing the cc battery voltage charge settings.
2. The HA02 battery balancer may be a culprit, i would suggest you try bus bars or another brand of balancers.
3. Since the housr is relatively empty all year round. Consider have a 1kw load, say water heater or even fridge run for some time weekly or so. To draw the battery down periodically 1. Charge Controller is victron blue solar Setting is 54.4v for float and 58.6v for absorb Inverter setting is 54.8 for flair and 58.7v for absorb. The batteries are mostly charged by solar Attached is a screenshot as at this morning. There was lite all throu the nite so the batteries were on float. 2. I have been using HA02 for years maybe I should try another balancer as u suggested. 3. Ok will consider that. I have several fridges in the house will connect it to a timer switch.

mctfopt:
This theory is flawed. As long as the batteries are not overcharged, staying afloat for a long time should not be an issue; that's where trickle charging comes in. I've seen Ritar batteries stay afloat for six years without any issue with little discharged in between which occurs only during changeover which lasts for less than two minutes when it happens. Your setup even has more time to discharge during the night. Like I said, unless the batteries are constantly overcharged, if not, Simba should be held accountable to honor their warranty. I totally agree this theory is flawed I don't have energy for warranty wahala I have had several nasty experience in the past so I don't even believe in warranty from a Nigerian business no matter how big they are. |
Satellite TV Technology › Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by nonoski: 10:13pm On Jan 19, 2020 |
I bought those useless luminous batteries myself from Simba in Lagos and had them shipped to Anambra. I was so disappointed with the batteries when I saw each of them drop to 9v during load testing. I didn't bother calling the Simba even duh they muted warranty when I was paying for them but I know how warranties work in Nigeria so I have made up my mind to discard the batteries. I don't even have flight money to spare to go to Lagos. My problem now is which batteries do I go for? I have been researching about the claim that having batteries on float almost all the tym is not good for batteries Even duh it discharges every nite to about 15% DOD Lithium batteries are out of my option coz it's in a remote location and indoors wouldn't want to burn down my inheritance

mctfopt: What inverter and load did you use on it? It's pretty annoying when battery fail so early. Damn, let's hope good lithium will come to our rescue. zeestone99: Luminous is really messing up big time. I just troubleshooted for someone yesterday. He bought 8 and Two is already giving problem. He said it's not even up to 8months. And I'm like this luminous have not changed Here's my story. I have a solar setup in my village These are the spec: * 16 nr 300 watts solar panel (Canadian solar) connected in 4S4P (4.8kw array) mounted on roof facing south. * 12 nr 200ah luminous batteries in 48v 600ah connection * 3 nr battery balancer * Felicity 5kva hybrid inverter * 250/100 Victron charge controller * Combiner box 6 way * Victron color control gx for remote monitoring * 2nr Busbar And other breakers and ancillaries. Apart from installing the solar panels on the roof all other connections I did by myself. The house is always unoccupied. From February 2019when I completed the installation till November 2019 the house was only used about 10days duh the inverter is on 247 Usual load powered by inverter 24/7 A. 10 nr external 12w led security light connected to a timer switch so they come on 7pm and go off 6am B. Mtn router C. 3nr wireless wyze CCTV cameras Total load less than 2kw from sundown to sunrise including 98w/h of the inverter self consumption. The Felicity inverter is set to shut down if voltage drops below 49v I monitor the system every day remotely to make sure all is well. The voltage neva fell below 50.2v all throu from February till November. In early December last month I decided to go to the village and prepare the house for Christmas but around 10pm the inverter tripped of (meaning voltage dropped below 49v). I noticed one of the batteries dropped to 10.2v while the rest where around 12.5v and 17.1v after 30mins of charging. After weighting all my options I decided to change only that battery. However I decided to call in an expert to have a second opinion. After running a load test on all the batteries it was only the new battery that was healthy the rest were barely surviving. His theory is that the batteries were mostly on float all year long and it wasn't good for the batteries.

mcTrinity: It's 19.2KWh (400Ah at 48V).... Mistake. Already edited. Thanks .
And going through the record last week, the lowest the client has woken up with is 49.2V Akwa Ibom has similar weather with Port Harcourt. Haze in the morning from 6. 30am till like 9am during dry season and perpetual rainfall during raining season With 19.2KWh battery bank yes a 3.6kw solar array will charge it during the dry season but will struggle during the raining season. I have learnt the hard way in solar installation especially here in ph were weather in an all round challenge. Try increasing the solar panels. 49.2v is a little on the bother line of 50% DOD |

In PH the average solar sun hour is 2hrs but on some days gets to 3hrs. A 3.6kw solar array will produce max 7.2 - 11.0 kwh daily. Your 28.8kwh (which I'm assuming is 48v 600ah setup) can give u max 50% DOD which is 14.4kwh. That leaves u with a shortfall of about 3-4kwh (basically ur absorption tym) |

Saipro: Most parts of the country do well with wind turbines. I've experimented successfully in the Middle-Belt. The typical issue is mounting it a few metres above the rooftop. You need rigs with heights in excess of 100m in most locations. In essence, it is viable as a commercial venture but would be gainful for only the most hardcore hobbyist. 100m is about 33 storeys height. I believe it's 10m u wanted to write which is within the standard for most stanchion or UB |
