The naira lost N4 to the dollar to sell at N213 at the black market and N210 at the Bureau De Change (BDCs) segment of the official market. A dealer, who preferred anonymity, told NAN that the depreciation might not be unconnected with the closure of trading at the interbank market by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). The dealer also said that the CBN’s decision, which was meant to control speculations in the market, might be responsible for the depreciation. Meanwhile the naira against the pound sold at N307 and N314 at the BDCs and black market respectively. However, it exchanged against the euro at N235 at the BDCs, while it sold for N237 at the black market. On January 28, Godwin Emefiele, governor of the CBN, directed that only BDCs and banks with genuine demand for foreign exchange should get forex allocation. He said the apex bank put up measures to calm the strong volatility observed in the forex market to save the naira from further depreciation. It increased the weekly supply of dollars per BDC operator from 15,000 dollars to 30,000 dollars and also set aside extra 30,000 dollars to the BDC sector. The banking sector regulator said the move was part of measures to deepen the BDCs segment.

Samsung has warned people against discussing sensitive and private information in the vicinity of its new smart televisions - because it will be translated into text and stored in a central computer. The new privacy policy for the voice-activated television allows the company and its partners to listen in on everything that people say. The policy states: "Please be aware that if your spoken words include personal or other sensitive information, that information will be among the data captured and transmitted to a third party through your use of voice recognition. "While Samsung will not collect your spoken word, Samsung may still collect associated texts and other usage data so that we can evaluate the performance of the feature and improve it." Samsung insists that the data is encrypted to keep it safe, and points out that owners can disconnect their TV from wifi to keep their data secure. In a statement it said: "In all of our Smart TVs we employ industry-standard security safeguards and practices, including data encryption, to secure consumers' personal information and prevent unauthorised collection or use." However, without an internet connection the voice recognition feature stops working entirely. While lots of voice-recognition devices use an internet connection to better translate sounds into actions, the storing and sharing with third parties is a particular privacy concern for some Samsung users. The privacy policy was first highlighted by a Reddit user, and many of the comments compared the situation to the telescreens described in George Orwell novel 1984. In the book, Orwell wrote: "Any sound that Winston made, above the level of a very low whisper, would be picked up by, moreover, so long as he remained within the field of vision which the metal plaque commanded, he could be seen as well as heard."

Again doctors treated him after he was diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis and three months later said he was ready to go home... But Mr Chen refused, saying he was in so much pain that he was unable to straighten out his legs. He said it was the hospital's responsibility to take care of him and refused to leave, even missing his son's wedding. The hospital stopped providing him with treatment in July 2012, after he was unable to pay any of his medical bills... They were then granted a court ordered earlier in the week to have Mr Chen forcibly removed from his hospital bed. It came after tests were carried out that showed he was healthy, even though he disputed this. |
A patient has had to be cut free from his hospital bed in China and forcibly removed by police after chaining himself down and refusing to leave. A court in Beijing ordered that the man, aged 55 and only known by his surname Chen, had to be removed from the hospital after living there for more than three years. But when police turned up to at the hospital yesterday afternoon, they discovered that he had chained himself to the bed railings. Officers were then forced to cut the locks and remove a visibly distressed Mr Chen, who was still dressed in his hospital-issue pyjamas, and struggling with police. Mr Chen was first admitted to the Beijing Jingmei Group Hospital in August 2011 to receive treatment for injuries sustained in a road traffic accident. After being treated, he went home after a month but two months later returned complaining of pains in his left leg.

Just two venerable religious leaders hanging out chit-chatting about the universe. Even though they're from entirely different religions, they have similar jobs. So they probably call each other up for tips: "Hey, isn't it crazy that all these people take our advice so seriously?"

In this photo, Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone De Beauvoir chill with Che Guevara. Just two existentialists hanging out with a revolutionary Marxist. I'm pretty sure they were talking about the previous season of "America's Next Top Model."
