Your last sentence should have been your only statement assuming you're wise. I will ignore your manners and still lecture you. Population in statistics simply refer to the size of data available for computation. Out of which a sample might be carved out. In this case of VAR and non - VAR comparison, the population size of the non- VAR is large as against the VAR,thus prompting the need for a SAMPLE ( obviously a one-year sample). Enough lecture for a Sunday morning.

So if we compare World Cups where THERE WAS NO VAR e.g do we expect to see the same number of goals?

No two World Cups have the same number of goals . So there has to evidence to show that scoring is the same in Category 1 where there is no VAR and different from Category 2 where there is

That this difference CANNOT be explained by other variables

A literate comparison would be looking at at least 10 years of data.

The other thing to bear in mind is that VAR technology and operation is in its infancy and still changing/improving and that means that what was used 2 years ago likely would be different for comparative purpose in another 2 years

Oga Literate, in statistics, you take sample of a population for comparison, what if VAR don't last up to the time you expects? Comparison can be done at any stage and level,if VAR is just 1 year into the system, it can be compared with just " 1 year" without it,if it has lasted up to 100 years,then it can be compared to 100 years without it. Why bringing up post graduate brouhaha into an issue that has everything to do with common sense?
