PoliticsNigeria’s Fiscal Crisis Worsens With Slump In Oil Production To 1.08m Bdp by NwaNimo1(op): 10:45pm On Aug 07, 2022
NIGERIA’s fiscal crisis worsened last month as the country again failed to meet up with the daily production quota the Organisation for Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) allocated it.

The production figure dropped by 6.2 per cent, from 1.16 million barrels per day (bpd) recorded in June to 1.08 million bpd in July.

The slump came barely a month after OPEC increased Nigeria’s quota to 1.826 million bpd, which economic and financial analysts believe could have helped the country shore up its external reserves and solve foreign exchange problems.

The fall in production level was disclosed by the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) in its latest crude oil and condensate production data for July 2022.

Condensate is a mixture of light liquid hydrocarbons, similar to light (high API) crude oil — usually separated from natural gas stream at the point of production (field separation) when the temperature and pressure of the gas are dropped to atmospheric conditions.

In January, February, March, April, and May, the country’s crude oil production averaged 1.39 million bpd, 1.25 million bpd, 1.24 million bpd, 1.22 million bpd, and 1.02 million bpd, respectively.

Nigeria has consistently failed to meet the 1.8 million bpd production quota set by OPEC, a situation that has affected the country’s income, and has made the Federal government resort to borrowing from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to the tune of N19. 9 trillion, according to June records.

Already, the state governors are worried about the effect of this level of borrowings by the government, as informed sources said discussions are underway with President Muhammadu Buhari on the possibility of converting the debt into long-term bond.

The minister of state for petroleum resources, Timipre Sylva, had said in March this year that poor investment and the exit of oil majors were affecting Nigeria’s ability to meet the oil production quota.

Sylva also mentioned security issues as another major factor contributing to the lack of significant growth of the sector, adding that the drive towards renewable energy by climate enthusiasts had discouraged funding for the industry.

Apart from the security concerns, international funders such as the World Bank and the African Development Bank are channeling their fundings to renewable energy targets in a bid to address concerns of climate change.

Industry analysts say Nigeria needs to hasten implementation of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) to give room for investments into the renewable energy space as prescribed by the law.

“There is a provision for the renewable energy in the PIA. As such investors would be interested to explore that space on the renewable energy space,” the Partner, Zera Advisory and Consulting and former Chairman of the Nigeria Society of Petroleum Engineers, Joe Nwakwue, told THE ICIR.

PoliticsClimate Change To Cost Nigeria $460bn By 2050 – Expert by NwaNimo1(op): 6:28pm On Aug 07, 2022
Prof. Chuwumerije Okereke, Director, Centre for Climate Change and Development at the Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ebonyi State, says climate change will cost Nigeria $460 billion by 2050 if action is not taken to mitigate its effects.

Okereke made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the sidelines of the ninth international Lagos Climate Change Summit in Lagos.

”Climate change is costing Nigeria already $100 billion per annum. And that this amount will rise to about $460 billion per annum by 2050.

“And this represents a huge amount of our Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

“From 2020 till now, climate change is already costing N15 trillion, representing two to 11 per cent of the GDP, by 2050 climate change will be costing N69 trillion, representing six to 30 per cent of the GDP,” Okereke said.

The expert, who is also a visiting professor to Oxford University, said that climate change was already having untold effect on flooding and rising sea levels in the country.

According to Okereke, flooding is already affecting 25 million people in Nigeria.

“In Yenegoa, there are 302,782 people estimated to be exposed to high flood risk along the Niger-Benue basin in the Niger Delta area with 630km of land susceptible to flooding.

“In Lagos, 375,000 people are exposed to flooding; the number will increase to about 3.2 million people by 2050.

“The direct estimate of damage and loss is N1.48 trillion. The total damage and loss, including indirect ones due to flooding is about N2.6 trillion,” Okereke said.

He said that with the rise in sea level, an estimated 27 to 53 million people in the country might need to be relocated with a 0.5m increase in sea levels.

Okereke said that coastal settlements like Bonny, Forcados, Lagos, Port Harcourt, Warri and Calabar were at risk with vast amount of oil infrastructure.

He noted that the country had mapped out a lot of interesting policies to mitigate the effects of climate change.

Okereke listed the policies as long-term sustainability plan to achieve a net zero emission target by 2060 and determined contribution to aggressively embark on actions to mitigate the impact change.

“All these are very fascinating, interesting policies.

“However, the action on the ground does not come anywhere near what is needed to arrest the situation to address the impact of climate change and to also reduce emissions from economic wide activity.

“So, we have a situation where we have a lot of various policies, documents, but very limited action on the ground and this worries me because I have been shouting that climate change poses an existential threat to Nigeria,” Okereke said.

He urged the government to match action with the right policies to achieved the desired result.

“We need to inject a lot of finance and a lot of action to stem the problem of climate change,” Okereke said.

He noted that the impact of climate change on our agricultural system was extremely high.

Okereke said that many Nigerians engage in one kind of agricultural activity or the other and agriculture constitutes about 26 per cent of the nation’s GDP.

“With climate change, you will have drought and it will affect different crops and impose even stronger, negative implications on food security system in the country.

“I have also argued that the depletion of the groundwater around the country caused by climate change and movement of people from the north to the south thereby fuelling insecurity.

“So, you have desertification in the north, flooding in the West, you have erosion in the east and deforestation in the south.

And all of these things are threatening the existence and the wellbeing of millions of Nigerians,” Okereke said.

PoliticsAnxiety As Julius Berger Bridge Collapses by NwaNimo1(op): 6:08pm On Aug 07, 2022
As watchers call for urgent structural engineering audit of all flyovers built by the company so far, there was palpable fear among the residents of Port Harcourt over the weekend when the Rumuokwurusi flyover being constructed by Julius Berger Nigeria Plc partially collapsed, causing panic.

The flyover which is the 10th awarded to the engineering construction company last February 28, by the state government, was due for opening in a matter of days. shocked

According to some eye witnesses, the incident happened when one of the beams of the bridge still under construction fell off.

Some other watchers said a machinery operator accidentally knocked off the beam “while doing some work,” causing it to fall off.

Meanwhile, watchers of the development have called for urgent audit of all the flyover bridges constructed by Julius Berger Nigeria in the state as well as the ongoing ones to forestall any unforeseen incident.

According to Leo Ndubisi, a resident of Elimgbu Street in the area, “Thank God no life was lost, and no injury too. But there is now need for every flyover constructed by Julius Berger and the new ones to be audited for any structural engineering defect or threat.”

PoliticsLai Meets Google In Abuja, Seeks Ban Of Proscribed Groups From Youtube by NwaNimo1(op): 8:04pm On Aug 04, 2022
Lai Mohammed, minister of information and culture, has asked Google to bar proscribed groups from accessing platforms such as YouTube.

The minister said this on Thursday when he received a team from Google in Abuja.

He said the federal government and Google share the same concerns on the responsible use of social media, adding that Nigeria has over 100 million internet users who are among the most vibrant in the world.

“We want Google to look into how to tackle the use of private and unlisted YouTube channels and YouTube livestreams by proscribed groups
and terrorist organisations,” Mohammed said.

“Channels and emails containing names of proscribed groups and their affiliates should not be allowed on Google platforms.”

He also spoke on the code of regulations recently unveiled by the federal government, adding that it is part of efforts to provide a framework for responsible use of social media platforms.

“This code couldn’t have come at a better time, as the country prepares for general election next year,” he said.

“We are committed to working with platforms like yours, as well as the civil society, lawyers, media practitioners and other relevant stakeholders to ensure responsible use of the internet and to protect our people from the harmful effects of social media.”

In his remarks, Charles Murito, Google regional director, Sub-Saharan Africa, government affairs and public policy, said the platform has introduced a programme called ‘Trusted Flaggers’ for citizens trained to track and engage with online contents in order to flag contents of serious concern.

“As I mentioned earlier, we share the same sentiments, we share the same goals and objectives, and we do not want our platform to be used
for ill purposes,” Murito said.
