On Wednesday, reports surfaced that former President Goodluck Jonathan had joined the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Jonathan contested the presidency on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2015 and lost to President Muhammadu Buhari, who is currently in his second term in office.

The former president has, however, been rumoured to be interested in contesting the presidency in the 2023 polls.

The speculations were rife again on Monday when a northern coalition purchased the APC presidential nomination and expression of interest forms for him.

The forms were purchased days after he had asked his supporters to “watch out”, when he was asked if he would contest.

But in a statement issued by Ikechukwu Eze, his media aide, Jonathan had said he didn’t give his consent for the purchase of the forms.

On Wednesday, Jonathan was said to have joined the Bayelsa chapter of the APC.

According to a report by NAN, “a dependable source in Jonathan’s camp” said the former president had registered with the APC at his ward in Otuoke, Bayelsa state.

The source also reportedly claimed that Jonathan is expected to submit the presidential nomination form on Thursday.

“Several bigwigs of the party have also been calling Jonathan to pledge their loyalty and support to the former president,” the source was quoted as saying.

“At least three top African leaders called the former president on the matter. They all urged him to run.

“One of them specifically told him that it didn’t make sense travelling all over Africa settling disputes only to shy away from leadership responsibility in his home country.

“Another reminded him of the implication of failing to put the experiences he garnered as a former Nigerian president and as a continental statesman to good use.”

The former president is, however, yet to formally announce a decision on the matter.

A support group within the ruling All Progressives Congress APC mobilizing support for Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, The Progressive Project TPP on Wednesday night submitted the VP’s expression of interest and nomination forms for the APC presidential primary election.

The submission took place at the National Secretariat of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) at about 9 pm.

The chairman of TPP, Senator Kabiru Gaya and Senator Muhammadu Bulkachuwa led the group which submitted the forms to the APC National Organizing Secretary, Alhaji Sulaiman Argungu at a brief ceremony at the party secretariat.

The same group had last week picked the nomination forms for the Vice President at the International Conference Centre, Abuja.

A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has nullified the Asset Tracing, Recovery and Management Regulations, 2019, for being “an invalid statutory instrument.”

All sales and disposals of assets made by the Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, under the regulations were also nullified by the court.

It held that the regulations were “ultra vires the office and powers” of the AGF.

The order was made by Justice Ambrose Lewis-Allagoa following a suit FHC/L/CS/40/2021 filed by the plaintiff, Incorporated Trustees of HEDA Resource Centre.

Malami had in November 2020 set up an inter-ministerial committee for the disposal of forfeited assets, following a directive by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) in October 2018.

The AGF’s power to set up the committee was challenged by HEDA, through its counsel, Omotayo Olatubosun, who argued that the regulations conflicted with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission Act, Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administrative Act, 2015, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Act, 2004 and Independent Corrupt Practices Commission Act, 2000, among others, on the matter of disposal of final forfeited assets.

The AGF’s preliminary objection argued by its counsel, Tolu Mokunolu, was dismissed by the Court which granted the nine reliefs sought by the plaintiff.

Justice Lewis-Allagoa held, “I am entirely in agreement with the submission of counsels to the plaintiff that the Asset Tracing, Recovery and Management Regulations, 2019 are contrary to the statutory provisions of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC Act, Trafficking in Persons Cohabitation Enforcement and Administration Act, NDLEA Act and Immigration Act.

The plaintiff’s reliefs granted by the judge include a declaration that by the ICPC Act, the Asset Tracing, Recovery and Management Regulations, 2019 “is an invalid statutory instrument the former having conferred no power arrogated by the Defendant to himself in the latter Regulations;

“An Order nullifying the Asset Tracing, Recovery and Management Regulations, 2019 as an invalid statutory instrument same being in excess of the provisions of the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission Act, 2000;

“An Order nullifying all sales and disposals of assets made by the Defendant pursuant to the said Asset Tracing, Recovery, and Management Regulations, 2019 same being ultra vires the office and powers of the Defendant.”
