Tens of thousands of people awoke on Christmas morning to a surprise from an unexpected benefactor - Santander. ![]() The bank mistakenly deposited £130m into 75,000 accounts on 25 December. Santander's staff are now rushing to claw back the money, although the job is being made more difficult because much of it was deposited in accounts at rival banks, according to The Times. The error occurred when payments from 2,000 business accounts were made twice. "We're sorry that due to a technical issue, some payments from our corporate clients were incorrectly duplicated on the recipients' accounts," the bank said in a statement. "None of our clients were at any point left out of pocket as a result and we will be working hard with many banks across the UK to recover the duplicated transactions over the coming days." It said the mistake may have meant that some people were, in effect, paid twice from their employer's account. ![]() Ruined Christmas One payroll manager, who asked not to be named, told the BBC the blunder had cast a shadow over Christmas and Boxing Day. "It ruined my holiday period because I thought I'd paid out hundreds of thousands in error - I thought I had done something wrong," they told the BBC. "I thought it was just me and that I was going to get in trouble at work." They said that Santander had not given any information about how firms should explain the second payment to staff or about how it should be repaid. "It's just a complete shambles," the payroll manager said. "How they are going to recover it, I just don't know." The bank stressed that it had already begun speaking to the rival banks - which The Times said included Barclays, HSBC, NatWest, Co-operative Bank and Virgin Money. Santander said those banks would "look to recover the money from their customers' accounts." However, it was not clear how the banks would respond if their customers had already spent the money, meaning returning it would push them into overdraft. Santander indicated that it may contact people directly to get the money back. https://ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/976/cpsprodpb/C944/production/_122542515_gettyimages-1309469252.jpg https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-59826345 |

Data compiled from the financials of Nigeria’s five biggest banks has revealed that the widening gap between naira and the dollar has helped Nigerian banks rake in N159 billion of additional profit in nine months. The banks are: Access Bank Plc. Zenith Bank Plc., FBN Holdings Plc. (First Bank), United Bank for Africa Plc. (UBA), and Guaranty Trust Bank Plc. (GTBank). The Naira was devalued on May 25, 2021 from N379/$1 to N410.25/$1 by the Central Bank of Nigeria. At the black market on Wednesday, traders said they exchanged Naira to dollar at N565. Data from FMDQ securities showed Nigerian currency exchanged at N415.10/$1 at the last session before the holidays compared with N414.73/$1 it was traded at the preceding session. For many businesses and individuals, the Naira’s fall has been a heavy burden on their operations and personal lives, but the FX devaluation of the Naira was broadly positive for some Nigerian banks. According to Managing Director of FCMB, Yemisi Edun, banks’ profits would be boosted due to a weaker naira in 2021 as it did in the previous year when foreign currency earnings rose more than two-fold to 10 billion naira ($24.5 million) from 3.5 billion naira. “The devaluation of the currency last year partly boosted FCMB’s interest income which rose 9.9 percent to 151 billion naira from “earnings in foreign currency that on translation increased interest income,” Edun said. The amount made in 2021, is a 140 percent increase when compared to the N66 billion the banks made in the corresponding period of 2020. Access Bank made the most gain as its foreign exchange revaluation income surged by 586.91 percent to N86.80 billion as at September 2021 from N12.63 billion as at September 2020. United Bank for Africa (UBA)’s foreign exchange gains spiked by 78.83 percent to N35.55 billion in September 2021 from N19.88 billion as at September 2020. Guaranty Trust Bank Plc. (GTBank) earned N14.8 billion compared to N12.1 billion made in 2020.First Bank’s foreign exchange income also rose to N5.9 billion compared to N624 million loss recorded in 2020. Zenith Bank also recorded N15.4 billion but this was a drop when compared to N20.5 billion income made in 2020. Explaining how banks made their money, Johnson Chukwu, CEO and managing director of Cowry Asset Management Limited said: “When you are holding assets in foreign currency rather than liability, you tend to make money during devaluation.” However a weaker naira also increases Nigerian banks’ risk-weighted assets related to their foreign currency loans, putting negative pressure on their capital metrics, but the banks hold good capital buffers. https://www.blueprint.ng/access-bank-uba-3-others-make-over-n150bn-from-naira-devaluation/ |

Aminu Masari has for the second time in one year advised residents of Katsina State to buy guns and defend themselves against bandits since it has become clear according to him that security officials alone cannot tackle insecurity in the state. Katsina, like other North-west states of Zamfara, Kaduna, Sokoto and Kebbi, has witnessed incessant attacks by terror groups. Hundreds of people have been killed or kidnapped in Katsina this year with thousands more displaced from their homes. Speaking during a media parley with journalists at the Muhammadu Buhari House in Katsina, Mr Masari said the number of security personnel is not enough to tackle the situation. “It’s Islamically allowed for one to defend himself against attack. One must rise to defend himself, his family and assets. If you die while trying to defend yourself, you’ll be considered a martyr. It’s surprising how a bandit would own a gun while a good man trying to defend himself and his family doesn’t have one,” the governor said. Mr Masari said the state government would help those who plan to own arms with the view to help bring an end to banditry. ![]() “We’ll support those who come with the initiative to procure arms because residents need to also complement the efforts of security agencies. These people (security agents) don’t have the number to protect the people. When President Buhari came, he even tried by increasing the number of our security agents but it’s inadequate. Count it yourself, how many policemen do we have in this country? How many soldiers do we have? “Even if we say every policeman should go back to his home state, it’ll still not be enough. So, if we fold arms and decide to do nothing, we’ll be the ones to suffer most,” he lamented. Mr Masari said the police would register all guns bought by the residents to ensure they are put to the right use. https://hallmarknews.com/wp-content/plugins/phastpress/phast.php/c2VydmljZT1pbWFnZXMmc3JjPWh0dHBzJTNBJTJGJTJGaGFsbG1hcmtuZXdzLmNvbSUyRndwLWNvbnRlbnQlMkZ1cGxvYWRzJTJGMjAyMSUyRjA4JTJGRThDT0p6OVVjQW9EbTZFMi02ODF4NDg5LmpwZWcmY2FjaGVNYXJrZXI9MTYzNzQ5ODE3NC01NzU1OCZ0b2tlbj0zNWFlMGFiYmYxNmRiOTc1.q.jpeg https://hallmarknews.com/insecurity-buy-guns-defend-yourselves-masari-advises-residents-of-katsina/ |

Former Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha believes he has cracked the puzzling phenomenon of unidentified gunmen who had been on the rampage in the state. The smoking gun appeared to have been provided by the gangster-like arrest of his son-in-law, Uche Nwosu, a former governorship candidate inside the church by gunmen, who later turned out to be policemen. Okorocha, who spoke on Channels Television’s Politics Today, said Nwosu’s arrest on Sunday gave a glimpse into how the Imo State government carries out criminal acts with policemen attached to Government House. “What is happening in Imo state is unfortunate. And not just Imo, but the entire nation and humanity. Imo State is becoming a banana republic, where there is complete lawlessness and where people live in fear. There is no day that somebody is not being killed, harassed. “It appears as if the happenings in Imo state have some backing from Abuja. That’s what I could figure out. And there seems to be enmity between the people here and the presumed federal government of Nigeria just because of a communication gap. “Most people have been wondering about the mystery of unknown gunmen. But it appears to me now that unknown gunmen have finally been unraveled with the recent happenings. https://pmnewsnigeria.com/2021/12/28/okorocha-cracks-mystery-of-rampaging-unidentified-gunmen-in-imo/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pv4pMVkfeBA&ab_channel=ChannelsTelevision

No less than 520,670 residents in Lagos State are yet to get their 2nd jab of the COVID-19 vaccine just as the state runs out of vaccines at various vaccination centers, LEADERSHIP gathered. So far, 950,067 residents in the state have taken the first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine. Out of this figure, 511,003 of them have received the second jab. As for the Moderna vaccine, 317, 784 Lagosians have taken their first dose while 236,178 succeeded in taking their 2nd jab of the vaccine. However, a visit by LEADERSHIP to various COVID-19 vaccination centers in the state in the past one week, showed that residents who are yet to get their 2nd jabs have been besieging these centres. Some of these residents who have been going to the centres for the past two weeks, were told that there is no vaccine. Mr Johnson Ike, a photographer in Lagos, told LEADERSHIP that he was supposed to take his 2nd jab of the Moderna vaccine as of December 13, 2021. “I have been going to Ogudu PHC since that day, but the health workers have been telling me to come the next day. Today is December 21, 2021, I have not taken my 2nd jab. It is getting frustrating right now, considering the fact that the government has enforced compulsory vaccination of civil servants,” Ike lamented. Mrs Clara Olamide and her daughter also have the same experience. The mother and daughter have been going to the Onigbogbo PHC in Lagos State for the past one week to get their 2nd jab. But they were repeatedly told that there is no more Moderna vaccine in the state. In his response, the commissioner for health, Lagos State, Prof. Akin Abayomi disclosed that the state has run out of stock for the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine at various vaccination centres. In a statement titled ‘Non-availability of #COVID19 Moderna Vaccine in Lagos State – Appeal for Restraint by Lagos State Ministry of Health’, the commissioner stated that Lagos State Ministry of Health (LSMOH) and Lagos State Primary Healthcare Board (LSPHCB) sincerely appeal for understanding over the non-availability of Mordena Vaccine in all vaccination centres in Lagos at the moment. “It should be noted that the supply of Vaccines to all states of the Federation is done exclusively by the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA). Like other states of the federation, Lagos State relies on NPHCDA for supply of all COVID-19 Vaccines,” Abayomi explained. He disclosed that Lagos State, at the moment, is yet to be supplied with another batch of Moderna Vaccine since the last stock was exhausted, adding that the situation is however temporary. “Lagos State is in touch with NPHCDA to ensure availability of adequate doses of Mordena Vaccine at vaccination centres as soon as possible. Please be rest assured that second doses of Mordena Vaccine will be administered to all who have received the first doses as soon as Lagos State receives new supply from NPHCDA. “All those who have received the first doses will be adequately notified and attended to accordingly as soon as new supply of Mordena Vaccine arrives Lagos State. Thanks for your understanding,” he appealed. Meanwhile, stakeholders who spoke with LEADERSHIP said the World Health Organisation (WHO) has recommended that doses of the AstraZeneca and Moderna Vaccines should be given intramuscularly (0.5ml each) with an interval of eight to 12 weeks. They cautioned that the implication of taking just one dose of the COVID-19 vaccines is that one may not be fully protected against the virus, hence the need for a second and even booster dose of the vaccine. A professor of virology, Prof. Oyewale Tomori, said the importance of full vaccination cannot be overemphasised, as it helps to fully protect an individual against the COVID-19 virus. With this shortage of COVID-19 vaccines, Tomori however urged Nigerians to strictly adhere to the non-pharmaceutical preventive measures. He said, “What will stop COVID-19 virus is you and I, wearing our nose masks at all times. The virus moves from one person to another and the mask is meant to prevent that from happening,” he said. On his part, president of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Prof. Innocent Ujah, also warned Nigerians, especially those who are vaccinated “not to be careless” just as he urged continued adherence to preventive measures. Ujah said preventive measures, like wearing of nose mask, frequent hand washing and maintaining social distance should still be adhered to. He noted that research was ongoing to ascertain the degree of protection vaccines provide against the virus and transmission. https://leadership.ng/covid-19-lagos-runs-out-of-vaccines/ |
