VAT: Adamawa, Kaduna, Plateau States Set To Join FIRS In Legal Battle Against Lagos, Rivers The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and the governments of Adamawa, Plateau, and Kaduna states are set to join the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) in its appeal against the judgment of the Federal High Court in Port Harcourt that empowered Rivers State to collect Value Added Tax (VAT). The trial court had in the judgement ruled against the FIRS in the tax collection tussle and ordered that the Rivers State Government was the rightful collector of the tax among others. The FIRS had challenged the judgment at the Court of Appeal seeking that the High court’s verdict be set aside. However, sources close to the AGF at the weekend, disclosed that the three states would file a leave of the court to be joined in the suit on Tuesday. Although the AGF is already a defendant in the appeal, the source hinted that the Federal Ministry of Justice, under the AGF has opted to be part of the appellant in the matter so as to enable it to argue effectively in support of the FIRS. “They are going to seek to be joined in the suit as co-appellants against the federal high court’s judgment that favours Rivers State. “These states understand the possible consequences if the final judgment at the Supreme Court goes against the FIRS. They are going to take the fight as if it is theirs,” the source stated. The source also added that more states, especially Kogi and Zamfara are going to be joining the suit to form a coalition with the FIRS. However, Dr Jibrill Umar Gwandu, Senior Special Assistant to the AGF, Abubakar Malami (SAN) could not be reached for comment at the time of filing this report. The decision of the three states is coming on the heels of the communique released by the Northern State Governors’ Forum last week where they expressed dissent and disagreement with the VAT laws of Lagos and Rivers states. https://tribuneonlineng.com/vat-adamawa-kaduna-plateau-states-set-to-join-firs-in-legal-battle-against-lagos-rivers/ |

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has renewed its call against the adoption of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, citing economic risk among others. In a statement issued on October 1 and seen by Ripples Nigeria on Sunday, IMF admitted that cryptocurrencies improve access to finance but the challenges and risk tied to the unregulated digital asset are higher than the advantages. The Bretton Woods institution listed quick and easy payments and inclusive access to previously “unbanked” parts of the world as part of the new opportunities in the crypto ecosystem. It said crypto assets such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, Ripples, Doge, and other stables coins could aid money laundering and terrorism financing, adding that the anonymity it offers create regulatory problems. IMF said: “The (pseudo) anonymity of crypto assets also creates data gaps for regulators and can open unwanted doors for money laundering as well as terror financing. “Although authorities may be able to trace illicit transactions, they may not be able to identify the parties to such transactions. Additionally, the crypto ecosystem falls under different regulatory frameworks in different countries, making coordination more challenging. “For example, most transactions on crypto exchanges happen through entities that operate primarily in offshore financial centers. This makes supervision and enforcement not only challenging, but nearly impossible without international collaboration.” While picking out the problems of cryptocurrency usage, IMF said many entities issuing stable coins do not have a dependable operational structure, prone to hackers and causing users to lose their funds invested in the assets. “Many of these entities lack strong operational, governance, and risk practices. Crypto exchanges, for instance have faced significant disruptions during periods of market turbulence. “There are also several high-profile cases of hacking-related thefts of customer funds. So far, these incidents have not had a significant impact on financial stability. However, as crypto assets become more mainstream, their importance in terms of potential implications for the wider economy is set to increase,” it added. https://www.ripplesnigeria.com/why-cryptocurrencies-pose-great-risk-to-the-economy-imf/ |

The Anambra state governor, Chief Willie Obiano, on Friday attributed the dire security situation in the state to alleged attempts by desperate politicians to rig the November 6 election. Blueprint reports that security challenges in the state had led to loss of valuables including notable sons and daughters like Dr. Chike Akunyili, the husband of the late Prof. Dora, the former director-general of National Agency for Food, Drugs Administration and control (NAFDAC). The governor, who disclosed this in his independence message, said the state would resist the attempt to create chaos as a gateway to manipulate the forthcoming governorship election. He said, “We are in a very critical period of our evolution as a free society. Almost every day, we witness events that test our patience as members of a sane society and our resolve as those charged with the responsibility of providing leadership to our people. We are confronted by the sight of evil and the brazen display of callousness that is alien to our people. “But just like our founding fathers fought against the colonial masters and overcame them to give us the gift of Independence, this generation will fight Nigeria’s internal enemies to strengthen the unity of Nigeria. Every generation must fight its own battles, win them and set a bright agenda for posterity! “For us in Anambra state, we have just stepped into our decisive moment. 37 days from today, Ndi Anambra will decide who will be their next governor. The approaching election has created a strange desperation among the political class leading to acts that are not only inimical to the regime of peace that my administration has entrenched in our beloved state for eight years but also a threat to democracy. “The deliberate attempt to heat up the system and create the impression of chaos in Anambra state is a ploy by desperate political leaders to wet the ground and provide a perfect alibi for electoral malpractices.” https://www.blueprint.ng/desperate-politicians-trying-to-destablise-anambra-obiano/ |
LAGOS (Reuters) – Nigeria got approval on Friday for $400 million in World Bank financing to procure and deploy COVID-19 vaccinations, the bank said in a statement. The World Bank board of directors signed off on the financing, provided via the International Development Association, which it said would enable Africa’s most populous nation to purchase COVID-19 vaccines for 40 million people, some 18% of its population, and support vaccine deployment to 110 million people. In a statement, the bank said the money would ensure that the government can vaccinate 51% of its population within two years and “avoid the dreadful consequences of another lockdown that left in its wake an economic toll the country is still grappling with.” The government last month said that around 20% of workers in Nigeria had lost their jobs as a result of COVID-19. Nigeria has administered some five million vaccine doses to its 200 million citizens, and is in the midst of deploying millions more doses of Moderna and AstraZeneca shots received through the COVAX scheme aimed at providing vaccines to developing countries. It also has 1.12 million doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine that it purchased through an African Union programme and is also scheduled to receive 7.7 million doses of the Sinopharm vaccine via COVAX. As of Oct. 1, Nigeria had recorded 205,779 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 2,721 deaths from the virus. https://www.metro.us/nigeria-gets-400-million/ |
