President Muhammadu Buhari said on Friday insecurity is thwarting Nigeria’s growth. He described the worsening insecurity across the country as a major challenge of his administration. Buhari, who stated these in his New Year address to Nigerians, said insecurity is setting Nigeria back at “critical points” through the destruction of public and private investments. The president stressed that the country is on a difficult journey to nationhood and greatness. He said his administration is re-energising and reorganising the security apparatus and personnel of the armed forces and the police in a bid to enhance their capacity to dismantle the operations of both internal and external extremists and criminal groups waging war against innocent citizens across the country. Buhari said: “The persistence of various forms of insecurity has meant that in the most affected parts of the country, the fabric of inter-communal harmony woven through years of investment of effort at building trust, mutual respect, and harmony has been threatened. “Insecurity as a challenge has direct repercussions on our national economic stability, growth, and development, setting us back at critical points through the destruction of public and private investments. “In parts of the country where chronic poverty, social exclusion, and disillusionment among sections of the youth were already a problem, the cycles of violence that have been unleashed by mindless groups like Boko Haram and others have thwarted the efforts of the government to undertake the social policy and associated investments that could make a huge difference in the quality of life of our citizens.” https://www.ripplesnigeria.com/insecurity-thwarting-nigerias-economic-growth-buhari/ |

Femi Adesina, the Special Adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity, has advised critics of President Muhammadu Buhari to calm down in 2021. He said this set of people had criticised the government for far too long, so they should take a break in 2021 and find a vocation. He said he gave Buhari’s critics the nickname ‘wailers’ because they were fond of criticising him, even to the point of absurdity. He said, “2021 is the year of work, hard work, to deliver on the major projects by next year. Is it then a year to continue wailing? No. It is the year to calm down, a year for wailing wailers to find a vocation, and allow the government to concentrate, and deliver on projects at hand. “Anybody who loves the country must resolve to give the government as less distraction as possible this year. Yes, there are challenges: security, economy, improving quality of lives, lack of jobs, inflation and many others. But is it the year to wail? No. We should rather hail, encourage the government to do better, and engender better standards of living for Nigerians.” “So, what am I saying. No criticism in 2021? No. But let it not be a full-time vocation, as it has been with some people. They will criticise the rail project of the government, calling it white elephant, but will be the first to hop on the trains, taking selfies in it. Wailers, calm down. “Please, ‘be calming down’ in 2021, so that the government can function with less distractions. It is not the year to cavil, find unnecessary faults, and fill the land with lamentations.” http://saharareporters.com/2021/01/01/reduce-wailing-and-find-job-2021-femi-adesina-tells-buhari%E2%80%99s-critics |
Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) weakened the naira to a record low during trading at the investors and exporters market on Thursday, Bloomberg reports. The naira closed at 410.25 naira per dollar at the I&E window, according to the website of the Lagos-based FMDQ OTC Securities Exchange, a platform that oversees foreign-exchange trading in Nigeria. On the spot market, naira traded for 400.25 to the dollar as of 3:25 p.m. in Lagos. The naira sold for 470 per dollar on the street since Tuesday, according to abokifx.com. Both the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank have intensified calls on Nigeria to speed up currency reforms in order to achieve economic growth. The IMF said a unified and flexible exchange rate will ease external imbalances and bolster activity, while the World Bank asked for a change of foreign exchange policies for the government to get a $1.5 billion loan from the multilateral lender. Calls to the central bank’s spokesman seeking comment went unanswered. Several foreign exchange rules have been introduced recently by Africa’s largest crude producer. These include asking international money transfer operators to pay remittances in dollars to beneficiaries, to boost dollar liquidity in the country after supply of the greenback dried up due to a plunge in oil prices. Crude exports account for more than 90 per cent of foreign-exchange earnings in Africa’s largest economy. Abuja-based banking regulator has devalued the naira twice this year by 24 per cent from an official rate of 306.5 in January. The latest change on FMDQ will be third. United Capital sees the currency depreciating to as much as 415 naira to the dollar in 2021. “There is a need to ultimately adjust the naira to that level for stability to come back,” Wale Olusi, head of research at United Capital said by phone. https://tribuneonlineng.com/cbn-weakens-naira-to-record-low-in-year-end-trade/ |

Spain is to set up a register of people who refuse to be vaccinated against coronavirus and share it with other European Union nations, the health minister has said. Salvador Illa said the list would not be made accessible to the public or to employers. He said the way to defeat the virus was "to vaccinate all of us - the more the better". Spain has been one of the countries in Europe worst affected by the virus. It is currently rolling out the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine which was approved for EU member states last week. In an interview with La Sexta television on Monday, Mr Illa emphasised that vaccination would not be mandatory. "What will be done is a register, which will be shared with our European partners... of those people who have been offered it and have simply rejected it," he said. "It is not a document which will be made public and it will be done with the utmost respect for data protection." He added: "People who are offered a therapy that they refuse for any reason, it will be noted in the register... that there is no error in the system, not to have given this person the possibility of being vaccinated." According to a recent poll, the number of Spanish citizens who have said they will not take the vaccine has fallen to 28% from 47% in November. media captionHow will the new Pfizer vaccine work? In other comments on Monday, Mr Illa said people would be contacted by regional authorities when it was their turn to be inoculated. "People who decide not to get vaccinated, which we think is a mistake, are within their rights," he told reporters. "We are going to try to solve doubts. Getting vaccinated saves lives, it is the way out of this pandemic." The number of people who have died from Covid-19 in Spain rose above the 50,000 mark on Monday. The country has registered more than 1.8 million infections during the pandemic. Spain is under a nationwide curfew, between 23:00 and 06:00, until early May. In many places, people are only allowed out in that period to go to work, buy medicine, or to care for elderly people or children. Regional leaders can modify curfew times and can also close regional borders for travel. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-55471282 |
