President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday met with the Presidential Committee on the impact of the coronavirus on Nigeria’s economy, and directed the Ministry of Finance and National Planning to ensure that salaries were paid. Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, who chairs the presidential committee, said this in Abuja while answering questions from State House correspondents at the end of the meeting. She said the committee briefed the president on current happenings around the world due to COVID-19 and its impact on the country’s economy. She said the president also directed the committee to put in place measures meant to protect the poor and less privileged members of the society from unnecessary hardships as a result of the virus. She told the State House correspondents that the president also directed the ministry to ensure that “critical infrastructure like roads, rails are protected and as much as possible, use local inputs so that the country retains value within her economy.’’ On the directives given, Mrs Ahmed said: “Well, he has directed that we should make sure that salaries are paid, make critical infrastructures like roads, rails are protected, as much as possible use local inputs so that we retain value within our economy. “And also make sure that we take measures that protect the poor and the vulnerable.” The minister further explained that the purpose of the meeting was to update the president on situations that are evolving on a daily basis. “This meeting was just to brief Mr President as the situation we are in keeps evolving on a daily basis, as the health crisis gradually expands, affecting states and also the lockdown that has been ordered to help curtail expansion of the health crisis. “The consequences of the lockdown are the additional slowing down of the economy and the measures that we need to take to mitigate the negative consequences of the slow trade and businesses,’’ she added. The Minister of State Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva, who is also a member of the committee, said: “The economy is not in the best of shapes due to COVID-19 and oil prices are collapsing every day, hence the need for the President to be constantly briefed.’’ Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, said: “the economy is not looking as simple as everyone thought it would be. “The global economy, naturally, like we all know at this time, will naturally suffer growth problems and may even lead to recession globally. “So we are trying to see what we can do as a country to rescue our own situation so we don’t go the direction many will go. China ‘selling coronavirus masks to highest bidders in the west after stockpiling TWO BILLION before crisis escalated’ CHINA is selling masks to protect against coronavirus to high-bidding countries including America - as the outbreak reached pandemic levels around the world, it has been revealed. Protective kit bound for France was rerouted to the US "on the runway" after Americans offered "three or four times the price in cash", it has been reported. French officials have now complained about the masks being sold on. Jean Rottner, head of France's Grand Est region, ordered five million masks from China. On Tuesday night, two million arrived. He has now told radio station RTL: "Americans pay three or four times the amount we pay, and in cash. "It's complicated. "We're fighting 24 hours a day." Grand Est is one of the areas worst affected by the coronavirus outbreak, according to reports. Mr Rottner said he blamed unfair competition for delays. 'WE'RE FIGHTING 24/7' "We're working around the clock to ensure these masks arrive," he said. The United States now has the highest number of coronavirus cases in the world. Officials are trying to get hold of any masks available, disrupting deliveries to other nations, according to a report by French newspaper Liberation. France has ordered more than one billion face masks. A quarter of those will come from China. The country currently has less than three weeks worth of supplies. The news comes as it is revealed China imported more than two billion masks and 25 million pieces of protective clothing from overseas at the height of its virus crisis. A report compiled by a Chinese government has today emerged detailing its foreign trade for the first two months of the year. In January and February, the country was at the peak of its Covid-19 infections. And as the illness spread across the world, China rapidly began importing commodities and key consumer goods. More than 2.46billion masks, protective equipment and other types of PPE kit were inspected by National Customs in China between January 24 and February 29. The Daily Mail reports that Chinese organisations operating in Australia sent bulk medical supplies to China during the height of the crisis. COMPANIES SENT SUPPLIES TO CHINA Chinese-owned property developer Risland Australia reportedly flew tonnes of medical supplies on a corporate jet to Wuhan in February, while Greenland Group re-tasked all employees to purchase face masks, hand sanitiser, antibacterial wipes and thermometers. The company eventually bought up three million surgical masks and sent them to China in January and February. As of today, there are more than 5,108 confirmed coronavirus cases and 23 deaths in Australia, and hospitals are struggling to cope with a shortage of equipment. In the UK, the government has faced criticism for its lack of testing and shortage of PPE gear. Health Secretary Matt Hancock has tonight said he will "stop at nothing to get protective gear to NHS frontline staff". Concerns over the lack of equipment prompted 5,000 doctors to sign a letter saying they feel like "lambs to the slaughter" and "cannon fodder" due to the shortage. https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/11314924/china-coronavirus-masks-stockpiling-two-billion/ |

A DAD-OF-SIX and politician from South Africa has been buried inside his trusty Mercedes with his hands on the steering wheel. Tshekede Pitso, 72, who was a high-ranking member of the United Democratic Movement, collapsed and died last week while walking towards the car outside his home. His family said that before his death he had expressed a wish to be buried in the car, a 1980’s E500 Mercedes. A grave was dug out specially at a family burial plot in the village of Jozana on the Eastern Cape, and Pitso was transported there inside the car on the back of a trailer. Pictures show funeral directors guiding the car down ramps and into the grave. South Africa is currently on lockdown amid the coronavirus outbreak, and the funeral saw many villagers flouting the measures to attend. Daughter Sefora Letswaka, 49, said: “My father was once a wealthy businessman and had a fleet of Mercedes cars but towards the end he hit on hard times and they went. “About two years ago he bought himself a second hand Mercedes Benz. "It wasn’t long before it broke down but he still spent much of his time in it outside the house. “He couldn’t drive it but that was where he was happy and [he] spent much of his time sitting behind the wheel. "He said when the time came he wanted to be buried in it. “We listened to him and honoured his wish and hope he is happy looking down on us.” she said after the funeral in Jozana village in Sterkspruit which is in the Eastern Cape. Pitso formerly owner a chain of supermarkets, and was also a respected local chef. He would reportedly like to sit in the car to relax and listen to music. https://www.thesun.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/NINTCHDBPICT000574486802-e1585747941385.jpg?w=620 https://www.thesun.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/NINTCHDBPICT000574487215.jpg?w=620 https://www.thesun.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/NINTCHDBPICT000574487187.jpg?w=620 https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/11303311/dad-buried-inside-mercedes-hands-steering-wheel/ |

LIVES DESTROYED Healthy Italian family of four all killed by coronavirus in the same week as friends mourn a ‘real tragedy’ AN Italian family of four with no underlying health conditions have all been killed by the coronavirus in the same week. Alfredo Bertucci, 86, from the northern region of Lombardy, died last week and was quickly followed by his wife and their two sons. Lombardy has been the region in Italy worst hit by the crisis, and Italy has been the worst-hit country in Europe. It has so far seen more than 110,000 cases, second only to the US, and at least 13,155 deaths. Alfredo, a well-respected blacksmith who had passed on his trade to sons Daniele, 54, and Claudio, 46, died on March 27. The whole family had reportedly been experiencing symptoms associated with coronavirus, including a fever, cough, and breathing difficulties. Daniele and Claudio both succumbed to the illness in the days following, and their mother, Angela Albergati, 77, died this morning. All four had been being treated in the same hospital. Speaking recently to a local newspaper about following in his father's footsteps, Claudio said: “I only felt I was a good blacksmith after around 10 years, at least to my father’s level. "He taught me this profession.” Family friend Massimo Giovanni Fasano told local media: “We are all so upset, it is a real tragedy. “They were all so healthy and strong.” The majority of people dying from the coronavirus have been older patients and those with underlying health conditions, particularly any that cause respiratory problems or undermine the immune system. Lombardy was the region in which the first coronavirus cases in Italy were confirmed, and later became the first area of the country to be locked down. Cases continued to escalate in the area, and reports have emerged of the catastrophic impact the number of patients is having on local health services. Doctors have described having to leave patients who would normally be in intensive care on wards without the equipment or staff to properly treat them. Recent days have, however, seen a sharp decline in the number of new cases being confirmed in the region. Of those infected nationwide since the pandemic began, almost 17,000 have now recovered. https://www.thesun.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/NINTCHDBPICT000574506788.jpg?w=620 https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/11306053/healthy-italian-family-four-killed-coronavirus-week/ |
Benson and Hedges to the rescue...... ![]() |
VACCINE HOPE Tobacco giant claims it has coronavirus vaccine made from tobacco plants which could be ready in June A CIGARETTE manufacturer says it is developing a potential vaccine to combat the deadly coronavirus - using tobacco plants. Benson and Hedges maker British American Tobacco (BAT) said it could produce 3 million doses a week by June to combat COVID-19. According to the Guardian the company said: “If testing goes well, BAT is hopeful that, with the right partners and support from government agencies, between 1m and 3m doses of the vaccine could be manufactured per week, beginning in June." The company says it will begin clinical trials on humans soon and is currently running pre-clinical tests. The treatment is being developed by the company's bio-health division, Kentucky BioProcessing (KBP). KBP previously come up with a drug to combat Ebola. It claims to have found an antibody that appears to fight COVID-19, using genetically modified tobacco plants. BAT says it is holding urgent talks with US drug authorities to fast-track permissions. Owen Bennett of Investment firm Jefferies said: "It helps to illustrate the scientific sophistication at big tobacco." Scientific research director David O’Reilly said: “Vaccine development is challenging and complex work, but we believe we have made a significant break-through with our tobacco plant technology platform and stand ready to work with governments and all stakeholders to help win the war against Covid-19. “KBP has been exploring alternative uses of the tobacco plant for some time. "One such alternative use is the development of plant-based vaccines. "We are committed to contributing to the global effort to halt the spread of Covid-19 using this technology.” https://www.thesun.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/CORONAVIRUS-SYMPTOMS.jpg?w=620 https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/11307746/tobacco-giant-coronavirus-vaccine/ |
