Politics › COVID-19: Nigerians To Enjoy Two Months Free Electricity Supply – Discos by NwaNimo1(op): 12:04pm On Apr 09, 2020
Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) have offered to supply electricity free of charge for two months to all Nigerians.

The gesture is to cushion the effects of the COVID -19 lockdown on the customers, according to the statement, which the Executive Director (Research & Advocacy)
Association of Nigeiarian Electricity Distributors (ANED ) Barrister Sunday Oduntan issued Thursday.

The DisCos, he said, recognise the challenging effects of the coronavirus (COVID-19) on the economic and daily lives of our customers.

ANED noted that “In fulfilment our commitments to the nation, we hereby align ourselves with the efforts of the National Assembly and the Federal Executive to mitigate the hardships that are currently being borne by our customers and other citizens all over the country.

“We commend the Federal Legislators, the Executive arm and The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) for their initiative and we are committed to working with them to ensure more efficient power supply within this difficult period, as the nation battles with the ravages of COVID-19.

“We are also completely aligned with the plans to ensure palliative measures, including free electricity supply to all Nigerians for two months, to make life easier, during the lockdown period. Details of implementation to come soon.”

The statement reiterated its commitment to improving service delivery to the nation during this pandemic period and thereafter.

Politics › Mele. Kyari: NNPC To Stop Running Refineries by NwaNimo1(op): 7:59pm On Apr 08, 2020
The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) will no longer be involved in the management of the nation’s refineries after their rehabilitation.

Its Group Managing Director (GMD ) Mallam Mele Kyari, disclosed this in an interview on Arise TV breakfast programme, The Morning Show on Wednesday.

He said that upon completion of the ongoing rehabilitation exercise, the services of a company world be procured to manage the plants on an Operations and Maintenance (O&M) basis.

Kyari revealed: “We are going to get an O&M contract, NNPC won’t run it. We are going to get a firm that will guarantee that this plant would run for some time.
“We want to try a different model of getting this refinery to run. And we are going to apply this process for the running of the other two refineries.”
He explained that the plan, ultimately, is to get private partners to invest in the refineries and get them to run on the NLNG model where the shareholders would be free to decide the fate of the refineries going forward.

Kyari stated that this model, which is totally different from previous approach, would guarantee the desired outcome for the refineries.

Also speaking on a Channels TV breakfast talk show, Sunrise Daily, earlier in the day, the NNPC’s helmsman said the decision to finally end the fuel subsidy regime is in the interest of ordinary Nigerians as it would free up funds for the various tiers of government to develop basic infrastructure in the education, health, transport, and other sectors for their benefit.

“Subsidy is elitist because it is the elites that benefit from it. They are the ones that have SUVs, four, five cars in their garages. The masses should be the ones to benefit. There are many things wrong with the under-recovery because it makes us to supply more than is needed. This makes the under-recovery to be bloated because we unwittingly subsidize fuel for the whole of West Africa. That has to stop,” the NNPC boss submitted.

He explained that the removal of subsidy would automatically correct the distortions it created in the market such as products arbitrage and smuggling, stressing that it would also provide the needed impetus for the NNPC to establish retail outlets in neighbouring countries.

On the agitation in some quarters for a reduction in the price of kerosene, he said the corporation’s focus was rather on how to migrate all those who were still using kerosene for domestic cooking to the use of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) which is popularly referred to as cooking gas.

According to him, apart from LPG being a cheaper fuel than kerosene, it is also safer and more environment-friendly.

He said the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Chief Timipre Sylva, was championing policies to deepen the adoption of LPG for domesticconsumption, adding that widespread adoption of LPG usage was the best solution to kerosene supply challenges in the long term.

On the situation with global crude oil price and supply, the GMD said things were shaping up.

“Crude oil price is improving by the day. Last week, it was $15 per barrel. Today, it is $32.79 per barrel. We believe the ongoing engagements between global oil producers will bring back demand and once that happens, the market will balance and fully recover by year-end”, he stated.

On the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic, Mallam Kyari who put the current total donations by players in the Oil and Gas Industry at N21billion said the sector was obliged to support the Federal Government in its efforts to bring relief to Nigerians.

He maintained that the donations were in kind and were designed to address three key areas of: provision of hospital consumables (face masks, test kits, etc.); provision of support services and facilities for patients (beds, ventilators, etc.); and provision and upgrade of health infrastructure that will outlive the Covid-19 pandemic.

He said the strategic interventions of the Oil and Gas Industry towards the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic in Nigeria were aligned with the objectives of the Presidential Taskforce on Covid-19 headed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr. Boss Mustapha.

Politics › COVID-19: 4 Nigerians Detained In Cotonou Over N900, 000 Quarantine Fees by NwaNimo1(op): 7:05pm On Apr 08, 2020
Four Nigerian returnees have been detained by soldiers in Cotonou, the Benin Republic after being quarantined for 14 days in a hotel in the West African country for refusing to pay N900, 000 each for the accommodation facility. The Nigerians who arrived in Cotonou from different parts of Europe and America, Vanguard gathered were forcefully taken to the hotel by the security officers after they were stopped by immigration officers from continuing their journey to Nigeria.

A source close to a family member of one of them said that the returnees were told by the immigration that they will only be allowed out of the country if certified COVID-19 negative. They were later taken to the Benin Royal Hotel, allegedly owned by the President of the country against their wish and forced to stay. READ ALSO: 7 days after lockdown: ‘Better to be killed by COVID-19 than hunger’ In a voice mail from one of the detainees locked up in separate cells at an unknown detention camp in a remote part of the town and made available to Vanguard, said their international passports have been seized.

Narrating their ordeal in the video, he said it all started after they were declared negative for COVID-19 and a bill of N900, 000 presented to each of them to pay as charges for the accommodation in the hotel for the duration of the quarantine. And when they declared that they didn’t have such amount of money with them, the officials insisted the bill must be paid before they will be allowed to leave the country. “I was surprised when the police arrived and tried to enforce the order of payment. Later some soldiers joined, dragged us out of the hotel and took us to the detention camp.

“We were told that the government gave an order that foreigners quarantined for COVID-19 must pay their bills.” “I arrive in Cotonou and submitted to their order that I be quarantined for 14 days to prove I was Coronavirus free. I was taken to an office where I saw other Nigerians. They seized our international passports. We protested being forced to stay in that hotel after we got to know we will be responsible for the about N40, 000 per night cost (without food). The official lodged us into the rooms and handed us over to another set of officers of the state. After the 14 days, we were issued bills to pay. The officials said it was an order by the government that every foreigner must pay.

The Nigerian Returnee further appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to save their lives. “We have spent four days in detention and no sign we will be released. We appeal to the Nigerian government to save our lives. We fear they may harm us and claim we are criminals. I cannot afford that amount now and the officials are not listening to us. We don’t even know the name of where we are being detained.” President Muhammadu Buhari should please intervene and save our lives. We have been confirmed COVID-19 free but the people here are subjecting us to this traumatic treatment, “he said.

His refinery would be the largest in Africa, his capacity can comfortably feed Nigeria and still export.

He would obviously bid for oil well and get a big one..

He would be drilling, refining, and retailing.. he would control his price to make good profit..
So Dangote now drills for oil?

northvietnam:
since how many years huh

Back to my opinion, most money bags in Nigeria prefer real estate investment abroad ... now Dangote don enter oil people will start shouting monopoly. Watch how fuel price will reduce drastically when he start refining and retailing too... the problem I envision is he will push most oil marketers out of business cuz I know his trucks will be hauling pms to all his feelings stations nations wide just like they do to his cements
Fuel price is already reducing around the world - and it's not because of Dangote!

Fuel na bad market for the forseeable future - The saudi's were clever enough to cash in late last year with the flotation of Aramnco

Within weeks oil prices crashed leaving gullible investors with losses to carry!

Yet despite the low oil prices Saudis are prepared to sell their last drop at $20 p/b to diversify!

Crude would still have its market, Tesla stock is not in good shape..
But there will be over capacity....what makes Dangote think he can do it more profitably?

Even crude extraction is too costly and efficient in Nigeria.

Ps: check tesla over the past 12 months. its one of the best performing.

Stark statistics from Chicago health officials have underscored the heavy toll of coronavirus on black Americans.

Black Chicagoans account for half of all coronavirus cases in the city and more than 70% of deaths, despite making up 30% of the population.

Other cities with large black populations, including Detroit, Milwaukee, New Orleans and New York, have become coronavirus hotspots.

The US has recorded nearly 370,000 virus cases and almost 11,000 deaths.

Globally there have been nearly 75,000 deaths and more than 1.3m cases total.

What do Chicago's statistics show?
As of 5 April, 1,824 out of Chicago's 4,680 confirmed Covid-19 cases were black residents, said city officials on Monday.

That compared with 847 white, 478 Hispanic and 126 Asian Chicagoans.

Chicago has seen a total of 98 deaths as of Sunday, with 72% of them black residents.

The disparity is reflected across the state, where black people account for 41% of Covid-19 deaths, despite making up 14% of the population of Illinois.

Chicago public health commissioner Dr Allison Arwady told reporters that black city residents already lived on average about 8.8 years less than their white counterparts.

Mayor Lori Lightfoot said the coronavirus was "devastating black Chicago".

She said city inspectors would be sent into shops to ensure everyone was adhering to social distancing guidelines.

Mayor Lightfoot also raised the possibility of curfews in areas where people gathered outside liquor stores, reports the Chicago Sun-Times.

What's the picture nationally?
Though the coronavirus has been called the "great equalizer", data suggests that vulnerability to the infection may vary by neighbourhood.

In Michigan, African Americans make up 14% of the population, but they account for 33% of the coronavirus cases and 41% of deaths, figures from the state health department showed on Monday.

White residents account for about 23% of recorded cases in Michigan and 28% of deaths, according to the data.

Detroit, Michigan, is about 80% black, and the city together with its surrounding suburbs accounts for around 80% of confirmed coronavirus cases.

A similar disparity has emerged in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, one of the most segregated cities in the US.

African Americans made up almost half of Milwaukee Country's nearly 1,000 cases as of last Friday and 81% of its 27 deaths, despite black people accounting for 26% of the population there, according to a study by ProPublica.

Some 40% of Louisiana's coronavirus deaths have occurred in the New Orleans area, where the majority of residents are black.

Health officials have previously said the Big Easy's residents suffer from rates of obesity, diabetes and hypertension that are higher than the national average, making them more vulnerable to Covid-19.

What's behind the disparity in Chicago?
Mayor Lightfoot said diabetes, heart disease and respiratory illness were "really prevalent" in black communities.

Dr Arwady told reporters that even if everyone in the city did have access to a doctor, "we would still see significant health disparities because of food deserts and lack of walkable streets".

Dr Cameron Webb, an African-American physician who is running for Congress in the US state of Virginia, told BBC News that US racial and economic disparities were being amplified by the pandemic.

"It really exposes our society's fault lines," he said.

Alderman Jason Ervin, who chairs Chicago council's black caucus, told the Chicago Tribune that "rates of non-compliance in some parts of the city with the stay-at-home orders" might also be contributing to the statistics.
