At least five migrants have drowned off the Libyan coast today after the heavily overcrowded boat they were on overturned, the Italian navy has revealed.
The navy said at least 550 people had been pulled to safety but added that the rescue operation was still underway and that the death toll could rise.
Shocking pictures show the vessel starting to lean to one side before refugees start diving into the water as it capsizes. Frantic passengers swam for their lives as the boat started to overturn and sink beneath the surface.
More than 6,000 migrants have been rescued from the Mediterranean in just over 48 hours as Italian officials revealed people smugglers now account for half of GDP along Libya's coast.
The Italian patrol boat Bettica saw that the vessel was in difficulty and approached it to hand out life jackets, but before it could begin a rescue the boat flipped over due to the sudden movement of the passengers, a statement said
'Shortly afterwards the boat overturned due to overcrowding. The Bettica, which had arrived nearby, threw life-rafts and jackets' to the migrants in the water, while another navy ship in the area sent a helicopter and rescue boats.
It comes after more than 2,600 refugees were picked up on Monday off the Libyan coast and a further 3,000 were helped to shore by Italian ships yesterday while 550 more were also turned back by Libya's coastguard.

A zoo keeper at Indonesia’s Surabaya zoo has landed in trouble after he was arrested and charged with impregnating a female orangutan, reports the Kalimantan Press.

The 38-year-old zoo keeper was filmed in full action by a series of hidden cameras put in place by the zoo’s security officials after doubts emerged about the man’s devious actions towards the zoo animals. He was caught on camera having sexual intercourse with the animals.

“Some animals seemed sexually aroused when it was time to feed them” explains Akhiroel Yahya, employee of the zoo for 14 years. “But what made us most suspicious was when we discovered Marylin, our oldest orangutan, was pregnant. She has never been in contact with any other orangutans because of her aggressive nature, so it didn’t make any sense” he acknowledges, visibly troubled by the news.

Then out of curiosity and desire to know, the zoo officials decided on what to do.

“At first, we clearly did not comprehend what had happened,” admits the zoo’s director, Abdoel Hakim. “Marilyn has been secluded for the past 10 years, it was a total mystery,” he acknowledges. “It is only when we placed several hidden cameras that we learned the horrible truth” he admits, visibly angered by the whole situation.

However, the zoo keeper had denied everything. He denied any wrong doing on his part.

“He said everything he had done was consensual,” explains police chief Abubakar Jaar. “He said he loved each and everyone of the animals and was very sorry he had impregnated the orangutan,” he told local reporters. “He says he did not know orangutans could get pregnant from humans,” he added.

“Contrary to popular belief, the orangutan species is much closer to the human species than chimpanzees. MTN Drops Lawsuit Against Nigeria, Pays $250 Million Toward Fine


JOHANNESBURG — South African mobile phone operator MTN Group withdrew its lawsuit against Nigeria's regulator over a $3.9 billion fine and paid $250 million toward a possible settlement.

A judge in Lagos last month gave both parties until March 18 to reach a settlement, after MTN had asked the court to arbitrate over the dispute, saying the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) had no legal grounds to order the fine.

MTN, which makes 37 percent of its sales in Nigeria, said it would withdraw its court challenge in an effort to reach an amicable settlement and make a "good faith payment" of $250 million toward a possible settlement.

"This is a sign that the fine could be reduced much further. There is some sort of negotiation taking place and the parties are migrating towards a common ground," said Dobek Pater, managing director of Africa Analysis.

The original penalty was based on fining the company $1,000 for every unregistered SIM card in use.

Shares in MTN, which are down about a third since the fine was first announced in October, rose 1.3 percent to 129.53 rand ($8.34).

Nigeria has been trying to halt the widespread use of unregistered SIM cards amid worries they are being used for criminal activity, including by the Islamist group Boko Haram.

A teacher at an all-boys school in Fort Worth is accused of having a sexual relationship with a student and taking him to Oklahoma without telling his parents.

Alina Leung, 29, is charged with sexual assault of a child, unlawful restraint and improper relationship between a teacher and student.

Leung was in a relationship with a 16-year-old student at Young Men’s Leadership Academy, where she taught sixth and seventh graders, for more than a year, according to her arrest affidavit.

He would visit her in her classroom and grade papers for her, with other students present.

Last October, they started messaging each other on Facebook and watching movies at her apartment, the affidavit says.

He was 15 at the time.

Police said she told the boy she wanted to wait until 2017, when he turned 17, to have sex with him because it would be legal then.

But he told police that he kept asking her if they could have sex and in November, they did, court records state.

During winter break, police said, she drove him to Oklahoma and toured the University of Oklahoma with him.

“The victim’s parents were unaware that the suspect took him to Oklahoma,” Leung’s affidavit states.

The boy’s dad found out about the alleged relationship in late January after the teen left his Facebook profile logged in on the family computer. The parents told the school’s principal, and police were notified.

“I hope you’re not filling my head with fairy tales,” Leung wrote in one Facebook message to the boy, according to court records. “I mean it when I say I love you and want to be with you forever.”

In another message, records say, Leung told the boy she didn’t want “anything bad to happen to either of us” and said they needed to “watch out for the outside world.”

The two also sent each other sexually explicit photos, police said.

A spokesman at Young Men’s Leadership Academy said Leung is on paid leave. He declined to comment on the allegations against the teacher by saying that the district doesn’t comment on “employee disciplinary matters.”

The Star-Telegram reported that Leung was being held in the Mansfield Jail Thursday morning, though it appears based on jail records that she was released later in the day after posting bond.

Former president Goodluck Jonathan has said that President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration is continuing that fight against Boko Haram with the equipment the immediate past government porcured.
He made the statement while speaking to France 24. He affirmed that no new equipment has been bought.

He said: “The new government is working hard and I believe they are still using the equipment we procured. Though the budget is still being debated, no new equipment has been bought; so even those equipment the President is using to prosecute the war against Boko Haram are those equipment we procured.
“When Boko Haram started in Nigeria, we had no terror experience. Yes, we had armed robbery and other common crimes, but terrorism was different because the people involved were not afraid to die.

''We never had the equipment, but when we were confronted, we started acquiring and before I left office we built reasonable capacity and I believe with what we left behind and also with what the new government will acquire, they will be able to prosecute this terror war to a reasonable conclusion.”

The event was part of activities organized by the Circle of Diplomats (Circle Diplomatique), Geneva to honour Jonathan.

The Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Alhaji Abdulahi Jalo earlier asked the former President to tell Nigerians all he knows about the $2.1b arms purchase scandal, and to this he said ''he chose to keep quiet on the issue, because the case was before the courts''.
