Politics / Okagbare Coasts To Gold, Breaks Another Record And Salutes Governor Uduaghan by oagbanashiymai: 9:49am On Jul 29, 2014
Okagbare coasts to gold, breaks another record and salutes Governor Uduaghan for his support.

Delta and Nigeria's Blessing Okagbare dominated the women's 100m, winning the gold medal in a Games record time ahead of veteran Jamaican sprinter Veronica Campbell-Brown, at the ongoing commonwealth games in Glasgow.

Okagbare, who won bronze in the 200m at the 2013 World Championships in Moscow, had qualified fastest for the women's final in 10.93 seconds, ahead of Campbell-Brown in 11.02 and another Jamaican Kerron Stewart in 11.20.

In the final Okagbare got off to a good start and was quickly into stride, and by the 40m mark she began to go clear of the field, powering away to victory in a Games-record time of 10.85 seconds.

"It is an honour and the reaction back home is going to be absolutely amazing," Okagbare said.
"All my preparations have been based on these Commonwealth Games so I had expected to run a fast time and I am so happy I can't explain.
"Everything has come together, it all just fell in place."
An elated Okagbare, after her heroics told BBC Sport: "I am so excited right now! A new season's best and win. I'm happy I was able to put on a show. I executed it and stayed patient like my coach said I should and after 70 metres it just felt easy! I still have the 200m and the long jump and I'm looking forward to both of those events now". “It feels great to get this far and win. I’m grateful to God. I thank all those behind this success especially our Governor who is here to support us morally after his financial support,” Blessing said.
The ever sports loving Governor of Delta State Dr Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan who incidentally was at the stadium to cheer Okagbare and Team Nigeria up said "It was a great feeling today being at the stadium in Glasgow and watching our own Blessing Okagbare winning the 100m in grand style in the presence of over 80,000 people from all over the world". “It was a deserved victory. She has made Nigeria proud and we are happy about this sweet victory,” Uduaghan said.
