Pets › Taiwan Bans Eating Dog And Cat by obafemee80(op): 6:01pm On Apr 12, 2017
Taiwan has banned the eating of dogs and cats, lawmakers said Wednesday, as pressure grows to improve animal welfare after a spate of cruelty cases that stirred public outrage.

Parliament passed legislation to outlaw the consumption, purchase or possession of dog and cat meat, with offenders facing a fine of up to Tw$250,000 ($8,170).

Authorities can also name and shame those who break the law.

“This shows that Taiwan is a society with advanced animal welfare,” said lawmaker Wang Yu-min who proposed the new rules.

The bill also hiked the penalty for killing or abusing animals to a maximum two-year jail term and a stiff fine of Tw$2 million.

Dog consumption — believed by some in Taiwan to help boost male potency — was common on the island decades ago but has become less popular amid growing calls to protect animal rights.

In 2001, Taiwan amended its animal protection law to ban the slaughter of pets — which included dogs and cats — for food, although there was no penalty on eating or buying the meat.

Sales of pet meat were banned at the end of 2003.

But a string of much-publicised animal abuse cases has continued to trigger deep public concern and demands for tougher protection laws.

Last year, the military was forced to apologise after a video surfaced of three soldiers torturing and strangling a stray dog to death with an iron chain, prompting several street protests.

And in 2014, a male hippo famous for regularly performing at a private zoo in central Taiwan died after breaking a leg and sustaining other injuries during transportation, sparking a public outcry.

Reactions to the new law were mixed, with some deeming it unfair to only single out cats and dogs for better protection.

“This is the cute animal protection law? only cute animals are protected while the rest deserve to die?” read one message posted on Apple Daily’s website.

“Why doesn’t the parliament amend laws to toughen punishment for drunk driving, fraud and homicide? what a lousy job it is doing,” said another post.

Dog meat consumption is also common in countries such as China, Vietnam and South Korea.

Last year, China’s most notorious dog meat festival drew crowds despite international outrage, as more than 10,000 dogs were killed at the event in conditions activists described as brutal.

South Koreans are believed to consume somewhere between 1.5 million – 2.5 million dogs every year, but the meat farming industry is in decline, with little demand among the younger generation.

In Vietnam, cat meat — known locally as “little tiger” — is also a delicacy and although officially banned it is widely available in specialist restaurants.

Phones › Re: Your Phone's Motion Sensors Can Give Away Pins And Passwords by obafemee80(op): 4:50pm On Apr 12, 2017
To conduct the tests, the team trained an artificial neural network with data collected from people who actively key in PINs to access various accounts. They then used a javascript exploit delivered through a browser on the phone as a point of entry. So long as a user clicks the malware's link, it can collect data from motion sensors.

The team already told tech titans and browser makers that sensors can be a vulnerability. Apple and Firefox issued patches to prevent anyone from collecting sensor data last year. Google also knows about the issue, but it's still looking into a fix. The researchers are now expanding their research to include personal fitness trackers, which are typically a treasure trove of motion sensor data. They want to find out how their sensors can be used to spy on your activities and how the data collected from wearables can pose a risk to your privacy.

Phones › Your Phone's Motion Sensors Can Give Away Pins And Passwords by obafemee80(op): 4:46pm On Apr 12, 2017

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w9uH2UPiDN4

Apparently, hackers can decipher your passwords by the way the phone moves as you type

You could be the most careful mobile user ever, but hackers can still steal your PINs and passwords simply by spying on your phone's motion sensors. A team of cyber researchers from the UK's Newcastle University have demonstrated how easy it is to steal a four-digit PIN by analyzing the way your phone tilts and moves as you type. You might think your phone's movements are random, but they apparently create distinct patterns. During their tests, they were able to crack four-digit PINs on the first guess 70 percent of the time and 100 percent of the PINs they used by the fifth guess.

Lead author Dr. Maryam Mehrnezhad explained:

"Most smart phones, tablets, and other wearables are now equipped with a multitude of sensors, from the well-known GPS, camera and microphone to instruments such as the gyroscope, proximity, NFC, and rotation sensors and accelerometer.

But because mobile apps and websites don't need to ask permission to access most of them, malicious programs can covertly 'listen in' on your sensor data and use it to discover a wide range of sensitive information about you such as phone call timing, physical activities and even your touch actions, PINs and passwords.

More worrying, on some browsers, we found that if you open a page on your phone or tablet which hosts one of these malicious code and then open, for example, your online banking account without closing the previous tab, then they can spy on every personal detail you enter.

And worse still, in some cases, unless you close them down completely, they can even spy on you when your phone is locked."

AeroMobil aims to make personal transportation vastly more efficient and environmentally friendly by allowing significantly faster door-to-door travel for medium distance trips and in areas with limited or missing road infrastructure.’
The team began this journey in 1990 with a sketch of a vision for the future of transportation.
And over the years, it has morphed into a fully functioning machine.
'We have been developing the concept of a flying car since 1990,' said Tatiana Veber, AeroMobil spokesman.

'Our first model looked quite bizarre and it would have problems in the regular use.'
'That was a signal to improve the concept of the flying car in a way to become an integral part of the regular road traffic.'
'We got a positive feedback from several experts in avionics, which appreciated design and the technical solution of the process of transformation.
'The car is constructed to be fueled at regular gas stations using the fuel for Rotax 912 ULS engine.'

Although the fly car has changed, the firm has always boasted that its vehicle is capable tucking away its wings once it reaches the ground - allowing it to seamlessly pull in traditional parking spots.
When used as a car, the vehicle has a range of 310 miles and measures nearly five feet long.
Built from light-weight steel framework and carbon coating, when converted into a plane, the vehicle measures just over 26 feet wide and 19 feet long to accommodate two people.

Firm is set to unveil the first commercialized flying car on April 20 in Monaco

As a car, AeroMobil has a range of 310 miles and flies 430 miles as an airplane

AeroMobil is designed to fold its wings down allowing it to fit in parking spaces

It has been more than ten years in the making, but a Slovakian firm is finally ready to unveil its first commercialized flying car.
Called AeroMobil, the vehicle has been redesigned with hundreds of improvements and will take the stage at Top Marques Monaco super car show on April 20.
With the flying car, AeroMobil aims to make personal transportation more efficient by offering the choice of transport on the road or in the sky - and forever putting an end to traffic jams.

AeroMobil is launching its new model of the flying car at the super car show next week, which the team has said was built in compliance with the existing regulatory frameworks for both cars and airplanes.
‘By combining aero and car functionality in perfect harmony it heralds a new era in efficient and exciting travel, offering users an unparalleled choice of transport on the road or in the air,’ the AeroMobil team shared in an announcement.

Christianity Etc › I May Be Dead Before 2019, Pope Francis Warns-punch by obafemee80(op):
http://punchng.com/i-may-be-dead-before-2019-pope-francis-warns/

Pope Francis has voiced doubts that he would be around up till 2019.
Speaking on Saturday at a vigil service to rally enthusiasm for the Catholic Church’s World Youth Day, the Pope urged young people to lead the church’s future.

As reported by the Associated Press, the 80-year-old Pope referred to his own mortality twice in the span of a few minutes at the vigil.

The Catholic Church’s World Youth Day will be held in Panama in 2019.

“I don’t know if it will be me, but the Pope will be in Panama!” he told the crowd gathered at the St. Mary Major basilica.

A few minutes earlier, he drew gasps from the pews when he teased: “At my age, we (old people) are about to pass away.”

Sensing their pained reaction, he added: “Who guarantees life? No one. At your age, you have the future ahead of you.”

The Pope is known for his casual, self-deprecating remarks and has said repeatedly he didn’t expect to be Pope for very long.

Early on in his four-year papacy, he predicted two to five years would do it. He has also not ruled out the possibility of resigning like his predecessor, Emeritus Pope Benedict XVI, did.

At the same time, there’s nothing indicating that Pope Francis is slowing down.

Later this month, he begins the first of his 2017 foreign travels that are expected to bring him to Egypt, Portugal, Colombia, India, Bangladesh and perhaps South Sudan.

He is also gearing up for the next big meeting of the world’s bishops later this year, dedicated to young people.

The Vatican has solicited direct input from young people to inform its work and participate in the synod.

Pope Francis took that request further on Saturday, saying he wanted to involve not just dedicated Catholics but all young people, atheists included.“The future is in your hands,” he said.

What they're actually looking at, however, is the world's biggest motorcycle, according to the Guinness Book of World Records. Dunham built the 15-foot high, 25-foot-long monster bike in over three years. It weighs about 6,500 pounds and cost $300,000. Dunham steers it from a cage below the handlebars.
