Gov. James Ibori, seems to be finding himself in many troubles. His Abuja house was yesterday broken into.
According to an insider, the assassins overpowered the security outfit, and rounded up everyone inside. After that, they started asking for Ibori who they alleged came into Abuja the night before. They ransacked the whole house, looking for him. The looked for Ibori for about hr1:30mins. One of the boys was overheard saying, 'how can they come all the way from Bayelsa, and met nothing?'. They later looted the house, in an operation that lasted from 2am to 5am. They collected cash and salaries from the staff who were paid, the same day, sources said. No cash was found in his room, as alleged, except for clothings and shoes and bags, which they carted away. The house is totally empty now, as nothing is said to be there any longer. Sources confirmed that, Ibori called several times from his Dubai base to be updated.
As confirmed by other watchers outside the house, the Commissioner of Police, and the DPO of Asokoro Police station and Senior CID officers, were sighted throughout in the house, yesterday. Secret security is now being engaged to work hand-in-hand with the other outfit there.
Hmmm! There is no point tagging it assassination attempt. It was an armed robbery attack. Someone at the IG's office confirmed this story. They are trying to conceal it from the press. I learnt the Assistant Commissioner of Police for CID, visited the location today on mufti. Also, some of the items have been recovered. |

Corruption allegation: Assembly is unfair to me –FasholaSUNDAY, 30 MAY 2010 00:00 EMMANUEL UKUDOLO •Investigation still ongoing –EFCC The Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola, has broken his silence on the N10 billion fraud allegation levelled against him and his team. Fashola had a word for his accusers, the True Face of Lagos: I am ready to defend myself. Fashola, who spoke in Lagos on Saturday, said that he was set to defend himself provided the allegations were not rumours but facts. He said his entire cabinet is made up of men of integrity and unquestionable character, adding that he was prepared to defend every action of his government. The True Face of Lagos had accused Fashola and his cabinet of fraud and had petitioned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on the issue. Based on the petition, the EFCC arrested and detained the Chief Executive Officer of Deux Projects Limited, one of the contractors of the state government, Mr. Olatunji Olowolafe, over the execution of some projects in the state. The contract sum involved in the case of Olowolafe was put at over N10 billion. Olowolafe’s company was said to have executed 27 contracts for the Lagos State Ministry of Health and three for the Lagos State Ministry of Education. Fashola, at the news conference to mark his third year in office on Saturday, however, said that his administration would not respond to allegations that are solely founded on falsehood, adding that government would only respond to allegations that are based on facts. He said, “I remember that when these allegations came up, I said that at the appropriate time I will respond. “We stand for our collective integrity and we stand here to defend everything that we have done. “We will not be distracted by allegations that have no truth.” Fashola said that while the executive arm of government carries out its responsibility of appropriating fund, the Lagos State House of Assembly (LAHA) has a supervisory role to play. He accused the LAHA of interfering in the fraud allegation issue even when there were court orders restraining the Assembly from doing so. He pleaded for patience from Nigerians for the issues to be resolved. Fashola described his relationship with the officials of the Action Congress (AC) in Lagos State, the LAHA and his political godfather, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as cordial. He said he was with Tinubu until 11.45pm on Friday. On the allegation that the Lagos State Government was trying to acquire the stalls at the modern Tejuosho Market, Yaba, Lagos, for its officials and a privileged few by making the cost exhorbitant, Fashola said this was not so. He said that those making such allegation should take into consideration the cost of building materials and exchange rate of the Naira. According to him, instead of making so much noise about the cost, Nigerians should be concerned about getting a space and paying over a period of 15 years. The governor noted that his administration had demonstrated integrity and efficient use of public funds, adding that more residents of the state were now paying taxes voluntarily due to the good work the state government had done so far. He said that contrary to belief of many that the residents of the state were irredeemable tax dodgers, things have changed as more people now pay taxes in Lagos. “We have shown that impossibilities are excuses for failure and that it is always possible for a people to change whatever they do,” he explained. He commended the people of the state for their contributions to the wind of change blowing across the state. Fashola, however, refused to comment on whether he would seek a second term next year. But on Saturday, the EFCC told the Nigerian Compass that the investigation into the allegations against Fashola were still ongoing. The commission’s spokesman, Mr. Femi Babafemi, said any accused person has the right to pronounce himself innocent while it is the business of the commission to investigate the matter to the end. He said the commission at this stage will not make any pronouncement on the case or make its findings known on the pages of newspapers. He said when investigation is concluded and there is a need to prosecute, the commission will head for the court. http://www.compassnewspaper.com/NG/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=51968:corruption-allegation-assembly-is-unfair-to-me-fashola&catid=672:top-stories&Itemid=794 |

Redman44: The FG needs to make this commitment a reality. It is now a yearly ritual to announce to Nigerians that Police wages will be increased Our leaders should start taking action concerning their promises. I believe our policemen should be paid nothing less than 80,000 Naira a month. These are people whose lives can be terminated anytime by men of the underworld. Apart from the issue of Police salaries, our cops need to be retrained and well equipped. Many of the Police barracks should be pulled down and officers should be made to live among civilians. The Government can then subsidise their rent. Personally, I believe that until Nigeria's tax collection techniques are improved and more Nigerians are made to pay their taxes, the country's development will be slow. Cheers.
www.amebor.com I agree with you, but not totally. What have they done with the little they have collected? Until we see what they have done with little, they should not expect much from the citizenry in terms of taxes. |

oweniwe: This is nigeria, yeah! Here, everything public or general is always over stretched, over populated & over utilised to the point that u wonder how those workin there cope with the situation. A public secondary school teacher teaches average 800 students every year (70 per class ¤ JSS 1 A-G) wit just black board, chalk, & rare cases textbook. Most teachers teach JSS 1-2 at same time. When a public school student finish sec sch, cannot spell 'portmanteau' & score 130 in jamb, who do u blame? The teachers? The hospitals don't fare better. Some ask why d docs hurriely discharged the woman, why she was sent back at massey hospital or why it took docs at lagos island hosp 3 good wks 2 know the baby's not developin well? The answers are simple. They have limited space wit hundreds of pregnant women in labor beggin 4 attention. 3 day after birth, go home 2 create room 4 others. The docs at massey reject d baby coz they don't capacity 2 treat d wound while d docs at lagos island hosp can't giv 1 to 1 attention coz they're over stretched. Add nigeria public perception of pub institutions as free make things worse. Some parents will say they don't hav N5000 4 drugs in gen hospitals only 2 spend N 70,000 in private hospitals over illness N5000 drug @ gen hospital could hav cured. Nice contribution!. |

Indeed, they will stop at nothing in wrecking the economy. Jeboy: We still dont get d point. U ll agree with me dat the package attached to a job is one of the criteria people will want to go for such job.Why do people want to work in oil companys, telecommunication companys etc Is it not because of d pay package attached or u think its just about the kind of work being done there?
The startegy is this. When d pay is good, the job becomes competitive and the fear of losing it becomes obvious. It may not translate to stopping bribery agreed. Graduates can see it as worth joining then a kind of change-over system can be achieved to better the system. Previous govt. b4 Obj had never meant well for the police that is why u see the neglect so that they can be easily used. When u re not assured of good welfare and u re given a gun, what do u think u would be tempted to do? Use what u have to get what u want. When the pay is good and other things put in place, u can give them warning signal that can put them on their toes by telling them their are many people out there who wants their job. I just believe its a just a matter of time the NPF wll get better. ' Now you have introduced a new dimension to it. Can a better pay reform an organisation? |

thimbook2: its not gonna stop the corruption already ingrained in the police force
men, even with the increment, those guys are getting greedier by the hour
i think its down to the Nigerian corruption thing and the low standard of those recruited in to the force, educationally and character wise That is it, reforms and reforms should be the beginning of change in the force. They should start by raising standard for those being employed. If possible, check the records of those coming into the force (gosh! I have forgotten, Nigeria has no record bank). There are so many stuffs needed to be put in place, to get NPF working again, and reducing corruption amongst them. Let get it right, corruption can never die in our force, just like anywhere else in the world. |

Jeboy: Dont know why 90% Nigerians are saddist. There is nothing the govt. will do that someone will not read wrong motive into.If Police salary is very small u ll accuse FG of not taking care of them while allocating most of the resources to themselves. Do a research and you ll find out Nigerian Police are one of the least paid in the world and that is why FG is trying to make it a worth while career so that people can be encouraged and boosted. Also caution that u re likely to lose a good job when they start disciplinary measures in the force.
The bottom line is to whom much is expected, much should be given.Left for me I ll support FG paying the least officer 50k then I ll now do a campaign of anti-corruption on them.
To my dear nairalanders, let us not be too pessimistic about issues, its true the way our leaders have ruled in d past has made us super biased but even many of us wouldnt have made a difference if given opportunity. please lets grow up.One love Just like many others here, no one is against this increment, but will it stop corruption in the force? That is the issue. |
Politics › Re: Fg To Increase Police Salaries - Latest News by Oboma1(m): 4:54pm On May 29, 2010 |
Theblessed: And you think this would solve the problem? Inasmuch as I support Police salary increment, it doesn't really matter how much and how often the increments are made. You see, Nigerian Police will always find a way to take bribe. Remember, as long as corruption exist in this country and people are prepared to feed it, in order to achieve their ambitious aims/goals in life, police will always demand bribe.
You can pay them a billion Naira a month or put them on the same salary scale as their Uk and American counterparts are right now, Nigerian Police will still need bribe - if not for themselves/immediate family, it must be for a distant relative some where. Reason being that, Nigerians are very ambition and highly competitive people who are never satisfied or contented with the little they have. We have to have what our neighbours have got even though we don't really have the means i.e. money and don't really need it. We have to catch up with the Joneses and sure we will, come rain and high mountains - that's the issue.
Listen, don't you want your own 4 x 4 or Rolls Royce ?? Well, Police do too and, that's where the problem emanates!
Again, it doesn't matter how big their salaries, still do it though! That thing called bribe, can never be taken away from NPF even if they are earning N100,000 as the least salary. |
