Nairaland / General / IMAGINE: Church For Only Celebrities Open In Nairobi Kenya by obynocj(m): 8:31am On Sep 30, 2013
Hummmmmmmmh I can’t wait to attend this church…..lol …..All-Star Church opened its doors to famous people in Nairobi on sept 23....

The church will use a hall at the Laico Regency, a five-star hotel frequented by the who’s who in Kenya.

The church wants to preach the gospel to musicians, actors, sports stars, top politicians and corporate chiefs.

Churches mostly frequented by VIPs in Nairobi include Mavuno, Nairobi Pentecostal Church (Valley Road) and Jesus Celebration Centre (JCC).

According to the senior pastor of All-Star Church Catherine Munene, the church is for “high-end Christians who cannot go to River Road churches.”

When the church was inaugurated during the sept 23 Sunday service, top names in corporate and political world were part of the congregation.

They included former Kenya Big Brother contestant and now Ziwani county rep, Millicent Mugadi. Governor Evans Kidero was expected to attend All-Star’s first service but he was said to have attended the Sotokoto Marathon.

Pastor Esther Obasike led the opening service.

All-Star’s Pastor Munene, told The Nairobian, “We are not looking for celebrities or hunting for them. But we are encouraging them to come as we are offering what is relevant.”

She also dismissed claims that she had been given the church hall for free by the Libya-owned hotel.

“We are paying a lot of money which of course I cannot disclose. Please don’t listen to rumours that could destroy my church. I know media houses destroy churches and if The Nairobian does this we will deal with you. We are very powerful,” she said as she invited the writer to attend one of her services.

Pastor Munene has been an evangelist for 10 years before starting her own church two months ago.

Family / UNBELIEVABLE: 7 Members Of Ogbonnaya's Family Run Mad by obynocj(m): 7:44pm On Sep 28, 2013
For the family of Mr Ogbonnaya Ani in Umuose Urobo in the Uburu area of Ohaozara LGA of Ebonyi State, life can’t be more cruel to 7 members of the household now afflicted with madness one after the other. The Ani family is being ravaged by the spirit of madness.....

The sad story of the family of Mr Ogbonnaya goes thus:
Ogbonnaya Ani’s elder brother’s daughter is mentally challenged. His younger brother’s son is in the same condition. Three of his own children, a male and two females, are equally afflicted. His daughter-in-law is not left out. So, there are six mentally ill persons in the family and, perhaps, still counting. Worst still, one of Ani’s mentally challenged daughters is heavily pregnant and no one seems to know who impregnated her...

And before his first wife died, she exhibited some signs of madness.

Recently, Mr Ogbonnaya told the stranger than fiction story. There is no doubt that the madness ravaging his immediate and nuclear families have left its toll on the old man. Sadness is evident in his sunken eyes. He looked frail and his voice quakes in palpable agony as he spoke. But for the magnanimity of a relation, Mr Ani and his household would not have had a place to lay their heads. This is because his mentally challenged son, Igwe Ani, alias Martin Martin, set his house ablaze. And before help could come, the structure had been reduced to ashes.

So, currently, Ogbonnaya and his family are squatters somewhere in Uburu, Ohaozara LGA of Ebonyi State.

When the reporter visited the family last Wednesday, Ozieme, his beautiful but insane daughter, was hanging around. With her tummy protruding as a result of advanced pregnancy, she looked vacantly into space, perhaps unaware of her environment and condition. A few times she smiled and muttered to herself. When asked to pose for a photograph, Ozieme obliged.

Tale like no other
“This place we are is not my house,” Ogbonnaya began. “My place is further up, after Oriebe. I relocated to this place because of the problem that I’m facing. I had a small mud house and I made it good enough for people to stay in before the problem started through my son, Igwe. It first started with Igwe and his sister, Ozieme joined later. While Igwe’s problem started at home, Ozieme’s started from outside the community. When she travelled and returned, she began to behave abnormally.”

In an agony laden voice, Ogbonnaya continued: “I don’t know how it started but we suspected or thought that Igwe joined his mates to smoke all sorts of things. I cautioned him to stop it if he was indulging in such act but there was no difference. We used to beat him to stop smoking to know if he would but to no avail. He started manifesting madness about eight years ago. He was still in primary school when it started; he was in Primary Four when he broke loose. Because of the problem, he couldn’t continue with his education. I cannot really say if he brought it upon himself by smoking certain substances or it is a problem destined to come”.

He said that the problem reached a crescendo when Igwe burnt down his house. “He used to pack all sorts of rubbish and dump in the house. It was impossible to chase him out of the house because he used to wield cutlasses and wood, threatening to harm anyone who gets close to him. At a point, he had outgrown everybody. On a certain day, he set the house ablaze and before people could come to fight the fire, things had got out of hand. That was how the building containing two rooms, a parlour and big verandah were razed down. Thereafter, we became homeless, so I brought my wife and kids to stay in a relation’s place. That was how we relocated.”

Like brother like sister
Ani said that his daughter was okay until a certain man from Nsukka in Enugu State came to seek her hand in marriage. According to him, the man eloped with the girl, adding that by the time she returned home, she had lost her mind even as she nursed a baby.

His words: “In the case of Ozieme, there was a time she travelled to Enugu to stay with her brother. There she started a relationship with one man from Nsukka and they agreed to marry. She brought the man home and introduced him to us. After meeting with us, the man said that he was going to prepare and come back for the formalization of the relationship. She insisted on going with the man; we asked her to wait for the man to go and come but she refused. We didn’t see the man again.

"When she was coming back, she came with a baby and started behaving in a manner we could not understand. We tried all we could to deal with the situation to no avail. This thing happened about five years ago and we have not set eyes on the man ever since. She didn’t have the soundness of mind to breastfeed and properly care for the baby and she died. Right now, she is heavily pregnant, she will be putting to bed anytime and we do not know who is responsible for the pregnancy.

"Again, another of my daughter who is married and a seamstress is also behaving abnormally.

"I cannot explain how this problem came into the family. From our parents, we did not experience any such thing. It did not happen to my eldest brother, who had died.”

Celebrities / The Highest Paid Nigerian Hip Hop Artistes And How Much They Charge by obynocj(m): 7:07pm On Sep 27, 2013
Award-winning singing duo, Peter and Paul Okoye famously known as P-Square are the highest paid hip-hop artistes right now, ENCOMIUM Weekly findings have revealed. The Okoyes are currently charging between N9 and N10 million for a show within Nigeria.....

Apart from information gathered from the source close to the duo, independent music promoters/artiste managers also confirmed this, declaring the Koko master, D’Banj as the second highest paid artiste. The DB Record boss charges between N6 and N7 million as a standard show fee.
“Before the split of Mo’Hits, it used to be D’Banj. When D’Banj was charging between N7 and N8 million, P-Square’s fee was N5 million”, a veteran music manager affirmed, adding, “Right now, it’s P-Square.”
The afro-pop king, 2Face Idibia is the third highest paid. Although, 2Face’s performance fee has not been consistent, it’s within N5 and N6 million.

Industry sources told ENCOMIUM Weekly that 2Baba, as he’s fondly addressed, easily adjust fees because of the love he has for fans. “I agreed that he’s the third because he loves what he knows how to do best than the money. He’s man of the people and he loves to reach out to the people. He’s always happy when he’s on stage.”

Star Boyz owner, Wizkid, who stormed the industry three years ago, rose to become the fourth highest paid music star, collecting between N4 and N5 million. Although, the Jaiye Jaiye artiste has not featured in any big show in recent times, he also told ENCOMIUM Weekly in a recent interview that he charges N4 to N5 million.
Female singer, Omawumi Megbele is the highest paid female star. She collects N3 million alongside some male artistes, including Flavour, Timayah and the rave of the moment, Olamide. Others are Darey Art Alade, Duncan Mighty, and Chocolate Music artistes, M.I and Ice-Prince.
The likes of Kukere crooner, Iyanya, Davido, Wande Coal and Tiwa Savage are in the league of artistes that go for N2.5 million, while D’Prince, Dr.Sid and one time highest earning artiste, 9ice collect N2 million respectively.
Aside artistes that still receive less than N1 million, Naeto C and Waje’s fee is N1.5 million.
“Basically, each artiste has a standard fee for gigs, concerts but for private parties such as birthday, wedding, etc, it varies. Some people would call for reduction simply because they are individuals, not brands. It depends on the artistes whether to accept or not. What I know is that it’s always fixed”, said an artiste manager.

1- Psquare – N10million
2- D’Banj - N 8million
3- 2Face – N6million
4- Wizkid – N5million
5- Omawumi, Darey, Duncan Mighty,Olamide, Timayah, Flavour, M.I, Ice-Prince – N3 million

Others…
6 - Iyanya, Davido, Wande Coal, Tiwa Savage – N2.5 million
7 - 9ice, D’Prince, Dr. Sid – N2 million
8 – Naeto C, Waje – N1.5 million

Politics / Why Has Shell Refused To Build Refinery In Nigeria? ––ribadu by obynocj(m): 8:01am On Sep 27, 2013
Mallam Nuhu Ribadu has stated that despite its present predicaments, Nigeria still has “great promises” that could be converted to gains. Ribadu spoke at a lecture on Thursday in Port Harcourt at the Shell club on the topic: Leadership and National Development: The Missing Link.....

"I interacted with Shell quite recently during my recent work in the task force on oil revenue, and it gladdened my heart to discover that Shell is one large multinational oil company that is closer to becoming a fully Nigerian venture.

"Yet, I have my quarrels with you. I am yet to see Shell establishing a refinery here that will end the waste of our gas and environmental degradation similar to the Bintulu Gas-to-Liquid Plant in Malaysia or the new plant in Qatar. I would also be happier if Shell does what De Beers is doing in Botswana."

The lecture was part of activities marking the 53rd anniversary of Nigeria’s independence.

Below is the full text of the lecture by Nuhu Ribadu
“I feel happy to be among you this evening. It is always a delight for me to interact with an audience like this – professional ladies and gentlemen striving to make our land a better one. This is a significant place for me to deliver a talk like this especially as part of the activities to mark the 53rd anniversary of our independence. The history of Nigeria cannot be complete without the mention of Shell.

Shell has played a defining role in our history which changed the course of our life for good and otherwise. For good because Nigeria has, since the first exploration works by Shell, became richer though, sadly, it also made us to ignore other equally important aspects of our socio-economy.

I however thank the Shell Club Port Harcourt (SCP) and the Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited (SPDC) for giving me an opportunity, and yet another platform, to express my views on an issue that affects every citizen of this country.

Nigeria turns 53 next week. Shell has also been producing crude oil for the past 55 in this country. Congratulations to you, and to Nigeria. In the past 53 years, this country has recorded significant milestones. We have survived severe cold similar to what that saw some countries sneezing to death. We remain standing, though someone wrote that we are standing still! Yes, he could be right!

The country is endowed with abundant natural resources and brilliant human capital. Yet, the paradox is there is widespread poverty due to misused resources and untapped potentials. It is therefore true that wherever Nigeria is mentioned, what comes to mind is Boko Haram, oil theft, kidnapping and corruption. Nigeria also lags behind on every world index that signifies progress and development. Our lives are daily deteriorating in a frightening way.

This is not to give in to pessimism, I strongly disagree with those writing off Nigeria as a failed country. Agreed, we could do a lot better based on what we have in terms of natural resources and demographic advantages. Nigeria stands on a foundation built by our founding fathers who in their wisdom also salvaged and formed a stack of bricks with which we are to build the nation up.

But the generations following our founding fathers used those bricks only to form ever more insidious fences that divide us across the lines of ethnicities, regions and religions. Nigeria’s problems have been shifted from the actual, which is the collapse of our institutions after many years of military, political and bureaucratic imprudence, to an invented assumption which suggests that our peoples are unwilling to live together.

The foundation of this country, contrary to whatever is schemed to uproot it, can only be understood when you go round the country and interact with the larger masses, who are the actual patriots, from markets to schools, and to social gatherings where identifications are based only on individualities. Our people are bound by a common goal, the desire to have their lives improved.

They are united in the same struggle to have functional public and private institutions because their sufferings, their poverty and deprivations, have neither ethnic nor religious identities. And the exclusive sufferings amongst them, like insecurity as a result of religious and ethnic differences, can as well be traced to our politics and ill-advised political decisions and indecisions.

Nigeria: From Pyramids to Refineries
Before oil, there were groundnuts and cereals from the north, cocoa, timber and palm produce from the south forming the core of an agrarian economy. I’m always fascinated by what the FirstRepublic politicians achieved with revenues derived from the agricultural sector. It is indeed ironic that the major institutions in the country today were executed by proceeds of our agrarian economy.

It’s inspiring that with meagre budgets, those committed leaders built the legacies we have not with the trillions we’ve earned from the Oil sector. Those first sets of leaders are inspirations that what Nigeria needs today is actually not more money, but simply the will and wisdom for the contemporary leaders...

To drive all these we need honest and modern leadership that could be a rallying point for the citizens, and one that can tame the consuming tides of corruption. It is my belief that firm and sincere leadership is the precursor for industrious and patriotic followership, thus national development.

Romance / WIERD: A Man Kiss His Sister To Make His Fiancee Jealous by obynocj(m): 1:24pm On Sep 26, 2013
I’m 23 years old and have been in an honest, mature relationship with my amazing and sweet boyfriend for six months....

We are very compatible and it’s likely that we’ll end up moving in together in the next year or so. A few weeks ago, I got to meet his sister, who is two years younger than us and the person he’s closest to in his family. Man, was I in for a surprise!

Not only did they hug each other tightly for almost a full five minutes when we met her at the airport, but he constantly had his arm around her or was holding her hand (and sometimes mine, simultaneously). The “pet name” that he calls me turned out to be a variation on his nickname for her. He even called her by my nickname and me by hers several times.

He honestly looked distraught when he had to choose which one of us to sit next to. It was strange because many of his flirtatious moves, like play wrestling, tickling, picking me up, etc. were also things that he did with her! It felt….bizarre.

On top of this, his sister exhibits signs of anorexia that my boyfriend refuses to notice. A meal for her consists of an orange or a handful of crackers, and she’s super skinny, weighing 105 lbs at 5’7″. In the past, my boyfriend has mentioned that while he knows that it’s unhealthy for women to be so thin, he’s really attracted to the wispy, thin women. He may have been trying to compliment me, since I myself am fairly thin, but I can’t help but feel like his sister has something to do with it.

Do you think I am just being paranoid and jealous about the way he treats and looks at his sister, or do you think there’s something strange like I do? I’m worried that if we see much of his sister, I may be at risk of developing an eating disorder myself (I’ve had some borderline problems in the past). What should I do?

Entertainment / Two Unilorin Students Construct Aircraft Prototype (MUST SEE) by obynocj(m): 7:31am On Sep 25, 2013
The students created the prototype as their final year project.
Two 500-level students of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Ilorin, Ali David and Patrick Effiong, have constructed an aircraft prototype....
The duo told journalists in Ilorin that they had nurtured the passion to construct the aircraft when they were in 100 level, adding that it was now their final year project.
Mr. David noted that many of his colleagues were skeptical when they first broached the subject, adding that they were not deterred by the challenges they faced.
“What we are actually working on is a machine that will lift up itself through the law of aerodynamics and having an engine, a propeller and the fuselage,” he added.
Mr. Effiong, on his part, said: “With some of our lecturers backing us, we were motivated; we decided that we can carry out the construction.
“Ali brought the idea to me that he had the dream of constructing an aircraft, but I didn’t really buy the idea then and I thought he had forgotten about it.
“So when we got to 400 level, he raised the idea again.’’
Also speaking with newsmen, the project supervisor, Tajudeen Ajiboye, said the students had demonstrated a high level of intellectualism inspite of the challenges they faced.
Mr. Ajiboye, who said the students were faced with the problems of materials and manpower at the initial stage, commended them for their tenacity to accomplish the project.

Nairaland / General / INHUMANITY: Couple Try To Sell Baby Girl Via Facebook by obynocj(m): 7:17am On Sep 19, 2013
A couple who tried to sell their two-year-old daughter via Facebook has been arrested in the northeastern Brazilian city of Recife, police said Wednesday....
A police spokesman in Recife told AFP that the toddler's biological parents were arrested and jailed late Tuesday after failing to post bail set at $6,666 each.
The girl was turned over to the city's child protective services.
"The 23-year-old mother said she needed money to travel to Europe for prostitution. The 40-year-old father did not say anything," the spokesman added.
A social worker from Campina Grande in Paraiba state reported the couple to authorities after reaching a monetary agreement for the transaction on Facebook.
"I am relieved to have changed the future of this child," said the social worker, who initially thought the case was a joke.
She had agreed to meet the couple outside a metro station in suburban Recife and to turn over $666 in cash plus a portable computer in exchange for the girl.
Under the deal, she was due to pay an additional $890 in 10 installments.
The couple was arrested during the transaction.
"The husband did not take part in the online negotiations but was present during the delivery and held the child in his arms," Geraldo da Costa, the police officer in charge of the case, told the G1 news portal.

Highway patrol officers testing their sonar equipment Foss Lake near Elk City, Oklahoma on Friday stumbled upon the rusting 1969 Camaro and a Chevrolet dating back to the 1950s.

Inside the Camaro were three bodies believed to be of local teenagers who vanished after going out for a drive in 1970. Inside the Chevrolet were three more bodies – thought to be a 69-year-old man and his two friends who went missing in the state in the late 1950s or early 1960s.

Police say the Camaro matches the vehicle associated with the three missing teenagers who disappeared on November 10 1970. They say they have confirmed the identity of at least one of the victims however details are yet to be released.

Authorities have not formally identified all of the remains belong to but the local paper has made a clear connection between the discovered Camaro and the teens.

The latest reports by local station KFOR states that one of the victims in the car thought to have belonged to the teenager has been identified but they are waiting to notify all of the relatives of the victims involved before releasing any names.

Jimmy Allen Williams 16, Thomas Michael Rios, 18, and Leah Gail Johnson, 18, all went missing after going for a drive in Jimmy’s blue 1969 Camaro on November 20, 1970.

They are still listed as missing persons and were thought to have been headed to a football game in nearby Elk City but also could have detoured to go hunting at Foss Lake. Local woman Kim Carmichael was a friend of the Camaro's owner, 16-year-old Jimmy Williams. She told Oklahoma's Newsnine.com: 'I just remember how devastated everybody was 'We lived in a little town ... Nothing like that ever happened in Sayre.
At the time of the disappearance, Ms Carmichael's father was the undersheriff in nearby Beckham County where the teens were last seen. He died in 2003 never knowing what happened. Ms Carmichael added: 'He said there was nothing ... There were no leads, no nothing. He said it was just like they vanished into thin air.'I can't imagine what [Williams'] family was going through if I could see what my dad was going through.'
Oklahoma Highway Patrol said they are hoping the discovery will offer some relief to families who may have gone decades wondering where a missing loved one was.

Entertainment / Man Stuck Inside Another Man’s Wife Due To Charm During Intimacy (VIDEO) by obynocj(m): 9:11pm On Sep 16, 2013
A Kenyan man who was cheating with another man’s wife got stuck in her this week in a guest house in Nairobi......

The husband of the woman had suspected she was cheating on him, so he visited a witchdoctor who applied black magic on the wife, causing the cheating man to get stuck inside her during the act.

For hours, the police could not rescue him from the black magic, and the husband in blue jeans and white T-Shirt refused to be persuaded.

A big crowd swelled outside to witness the drama, as police ran out of options on how to help the two.

The cheating man finally agreed to pay the husband Sh20,000 in compensation. Then a local pastor was called in to pray and the two were finally separated.
At the end of the video the cheating man was seen heading out to withdraw the money from an ATM.
