A 67-year-old church guard identified as Matthew Isidahume, yesterday, reportedly committed suicide with his lifeless body found dangling within the premises of Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Gbagura, Ago- Oka, in Abeokuta North Local Government of Ogun State....

Vanguard learnt that members of the church who converged for the morning prayers discovered the corpse of the deceased where he allegedly hung himself.
When Vanguard visited the scene, men of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and some policemen were seen at the place.
Contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, who confirmed the incident said three guards were supposed to be on duty when the incident happened.
Adejobi said: “The deceased left a suicide note which is currently assisting us in our investigation, but the command will do a thorough job toward getting to the bottom of the matter.”
However, a member of the church council, who identified himself as Adekunle Adegoke, said the deceased was the church’s night-guard, adding that those who came for the morning prayer meeting met the gate locked and waited for about 30 minutes thinking the late Matthew was busy.
He said: “When there was no trace of him, the people decided to push a small boy across the fence and the boy later returned with the sad news that Matthew had hung himself.
“Really, if you see him, the first thought will be that there was a sort of complex issue, probably there is a foul play. But looking closely you will see his footprints on the generator which showed that he climbed, tied something on his neck and then jumped.”

The Federal Government, on Thursday, said smoking would soon be banned in the country as soon as the Anti-Tobacco Bill before the National Assembly was passed into law....
It also disclosed its readiness to convene a Universal Health Coverage to help boost strategies towards improving healthcare delivery.
Minister of Health, Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu, who spoke in Abuja, at a ministerial platform, insisted that the Federal Government could no longer condone smoking.
He asked rhetorically: “Why are you smoking? Why are you taking what will kill you? What benefit do you derive from smoking?”
Professor Chukwu listed his achievements in office in the last two years to include establishment of National Trauma Centres in the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital and the National Hospital, Abuja; completion of Federal Staff Hospital, Jabi, Abuja; completion of Laboratory and Administrative building of the Nigerian Institute of Pharmaceutical Research and Development (NIPRD), Abuja, and rehabilitation and equipping of several teaching hospitals in the country.
The minster disclosed that President Goodluck Jonathan increased funding for polio eradication to N4.7billion and made further commitment of N2.5billion this year with a Presidential Task Force on Polio Eradication constituted to help in the fight against the disease.
He said, “today in Nigeria, seven of our teaching hospitals can do kidney transplant. This month, we are expecting International Certification Team on the Elimination of Guinea Worm in Nigeria.”

British National Party head Nick Griffin has made a nasty and vicious attack on ailing former South African President Nelson Mandela branding him an "old terrorist"....


BNP leader Nick Griffin has sparked outrage with a series of tweets branding Nelson Mandela a "murdering old terrorist".

The far-right politician also mocked the 94-year-old former South African president's lung condition.

He wrote: "Saint #nelsonmandela on last legs it seems. Make sure to avoid BBC when the murdering old terrorist croaks. It'll be nauseating.

"'Statesmen' must be judged on results not rhetoric. Before Mandela, South Africa was safe economic powerhouse. Now crime ridden basket case.

"No surprise #Mandela's lungs are shot - all those burning tyres. Smoking necklaces very bad for the health."

Mandela's family gathered at his bedside on Saturday night after he was taken to hospital with a serious lung infection.

He is suffering from a recurrence of the condition which has put him in hospital three times since December .

Mandela served 27 years of a life sentence in prisons including the infamous Robben Island for sabotage and conspiracy against the oppressive South African Apartheid regime.

He was released in 1990 and was elected president of South Africa four years later in the country's first free and fair elections.

Many people took to Twitter to criticise Griffin's comments.

Peter Hain, the South Africa-raised former Labour minister and hardline anti-Apartheid campaigner, tweeted that it was a "nasty vicious attack".

Ruth Rosenau, a Labour councillor in Stoke-on-Trent, tweeted: "#Mandela - a towering figure in world history & an inspiration to millions. Nick Griffin - what will you be remembered for?"

Bob Woods, who tweeted from BrummyTaff, said: "#NickGriffin Insults #Mandela & shows what a small minded odious irrelevant little man he is. Not fit to tie his laces."

The South African presidency released a statement on Saturday morning expressing concern for Madiba, who was rushed to a Pretoria hospital overnight because of a recurring lung infection. In the statement, presidency spokesperson Mac Maharaj said that Mandela's condition was "serious but stable".

WITH only the Talibans in Afghanistan ahead,Boko Haram is now the second widely known perpetrator of terrorism in the world, according to a report by the United States (U.S.) government.

Just last week, the U.S. State Department announced a $7 million bounty for information that will lead to the capture of the group’s leader, Abubakar Shekau.

And in Nigeria, there is outrage at the opposition of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) to the Federal Government’s ban on the group. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Monday accused the ACN of trying to use the press as a subterfuge to hide its support for insurgents and to whittle the efforts by the Federal Government to end acts of terrorism in the country.

The ruling party, which threw its weight behind President Goodluck Jonathan, said contrary to the claims by the ACN, no part of the presidential order proscribing terrorist groups, directly or indirectly violated any provision of the constitution or impinged on the freedom of the press in the country.

The PDP National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, in a statement on Monday described the allegation by the ACN that the order was aimed at gagging the press, as despicable and a clear indication of how far the opposition party could go to distort facts to support violence and cause disaffection among Nigerians.

The PDP in Ondo State and the Niger Delta Professionals also faulted the position of the ACN.

An annex to the U.S. government report on terrorism last year, just made available to The Guardian, shows that besides the Taliban in Afghanistan, Boko Haram in Nigeria had the highest number of terror attacks last yearand killed also the second highest number of people.

The statistical report called ‘START’ conducted by the University of Maryland for the American government on global terrorism in 2012 has revealed that while the Talibans killed 1,842 people in 525 attacks last year, and came tops on the infamous ranking, Boko Haram came second killing 1,132 in 364 attacks.

Both the Talibans and Boko Haram killed more than Al-Qaeda in Iraq, the Maoists in India, Al-Shabaab, Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula among other global terrorist groups.

Commenting, the Christian Association of Nigerian Americans (CANAN) noted that based on these statistics of the U.S. government, the refusal of the State Department to designate Boko Haram a Foreign Terrorist Organisation (FTO) continued to be unsettling.

A statement from the group on Monday in New York said: “The statistics that were computed at the instruction of the U.S. government by a reputable university deemed a centre of excellence by the U.S. government show proof why Boko Haram should be designated.”

CANAN added: “This is a further evidence that our demand to the State Department to designate Boko Haram an FTO is a position backed up by facts and reality. Our hope and expectation is that soon, the State Department will do what is right.”

The statistical report also revealed that of the top 10 countries with the most terrorist attacks last year, Nigeria came fifth because of the activities of Boko Haram.

Besides, Nigeria ranked fourth in number of deaths from terrorist attacks. According to the statistical information attached to the recent “U.S. Terrorism 2012 reports”, last year alone, there were a total number of 546 terror attacks in Nigeria with 1,386 killed.

“The average lethality of terrorist attacks in Nigeria (2.54 deaths per attack) is more than 50 per cent higher than the global average of 1.64.”

The statistical report revealed that in 2012, the majority of highly lethal attacks -159 in all -, took place in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Nigeria and Syria, killing a total of 2,880 people.

The report stated that Boko Haram “was responsible for a number of highly lethal attacks in 2012, including a series of co-ordinated bombings and armed assaults in Kano, Nigeria, on January 20 that killed an estimated 190 people.”

The ‘START’ was conducted by the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism, based at the University of Maryland. The consortium is deemed a U.S. Homeland Security Centre of Excellence for Science and Technology.

The U.S. laws require the government in its yearly terrorism reports to include complete statistical information on number of individuals killed, injured or kidnapped by each terrorist group during the preceding year.

Last year June, the U.S. State Department contracted the consortium to collect the statistical data.

A statement by the Ondo State Director of Publicity of PDP, Ayo Fadaka which was made available to The Guardian in Akure yesterday, expressed “total disappointment” over the ACN’s position on the Boko Haram issue.

The statement read in part: “The activities of terrorist groups represent a grave challenge to the corporate existence of the nation and its only goal is to systematically pursue a programme that would have completely led to its disintegration.

“In tackling this development, President Goodluck Jonathan certainly did explore all available avenues to make Boko Haram and its accomplices to embrace peace and even conditionally disarm its membership and this was rebuffed continuously.

“It was when it became almost impossible to call them to order that the Federal Government finally declared a state of emergency in the prime theatres of their action and even when that happened, the ACN was the only party that condemned the action of government as if the programmes of these anti-system groups are synonymous with its goals.

“Again, the ACN has pushed further its frontiers of clandestine support for these groups by needlessly criticising the Federal Government gazette of the ban of these agencies saying it will infringe on the liberty of people, we wonder if there are elements in that party that are accomplices of Boko Haram.

“Therefore, we call on the people of the South-West to take due cognisance of the activities of the party and be circumspect in appreciating same. There are ominous signs that there are more than meet the eyes in its style and operations. In the South-West, we take pride in our tolerance level and ability to accommodate our diverse feelings but if feelers from Osun State are anything to go by today, religious sentimentalism is being promoted by the ACN government of Rauf Aregbesola and this is sad and absolutely reprehensible.

“In playing politics, we expect that issues that promote the development and health of the nation must dictate the views of political parties and not sectarian and parochial issues that will certainly do more damage than ordinarily anticipated.

“Parties thrive today because there is a nation where peace and orderliness reign and that must be a goal of every citizen to preserve.

“We restate that anyone who is conscious of all the evils perpetrated on citizens and corporate organisations in this country by Boko Haram and its accomplices and continues to seek to express support for these organisations in whatever manner is anything but patriotic.

“We equally remind the ACN that its desire to make any political gain in Nigeria is certainly predicated on the peace and well-being of the nation.”

In their reaction to the ACN’s position, Niger Delta Professionals said that the party’s attack was an insult to the Nigerian people.

In a statement by National Co-ordinator, Mr. Onoriode Izomo and National Secretary, Mr. Andrew O. Ugbovoro of the group, they said that the ACN’s action had proved its desperation to rule the nation.

“Or how else would you explain such an open support for violence and killing of innocent souls and destruction of property by a group that has no value for life? Is ACN indirectly unveiling part of their agenda for their proposed coalition with the APC? Buhari attacked the Presidency by his utterance, the whole world condemned him, now his supposed coalition partner decides to join his wagon of senseless utterance and publicly attack the President again. These are the same people who had consistently criticised the President on his peaceful approach to the handling of fear and terror created by the same group in Nigeria,” the group said.

It added: “We want to let the ACN know that Nigerians may be gullible but not totally silly, any one or group who could support the Boko Haram despite all the havoc they created in this nation is not only violence-oriented, but is an enemy of peace and does not deserve to be given the slightest opportunity to go near Aso Rock let alone enter into it. God has only shown Nigerians the make-up of people seeking our votes to rule us. By this singular act, we are no longer deceived by the below par performance of some of the ACN governors, it’s merely a ploy to lure Nigerians to their own doom. ACN or APC if given opportunity to run the affairs of this nation would use Boko Haram to terrorise Nigerians. Note that any man or group that supports evil is himself or herself evil.”

A tenant identified as Uzodinma Eneh has been arrested by the Enugu State Police Command for allegedly stabbing his co-tenant, Prince Uzor, to death at their Aguabor residence in Trans Ekulu area of Enugu......

Uzor was allegedly stabbed with a knife by the suspect following a hot argument that ensued between them over sharing of electricity bill incurred by the tenants.

Sympathizers promptly rushed the victim to the Parklane Specialist Hospital, but he died shortly after arriving the hospital.

Confirming the incident, state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, said the suspect was already helping the police in their investigation.

According to the Harvard Business Review article, “What Women Know About Leadership That Men Don’t,” today’s effective leader “requires a blend of intellectual qualities — the ability to think analytically, strategically and creatively — and emotional ones, including self-awareness, empathy and humility. In short, great leadership begins with being a whole human being.”

I have worked for only one female boss for an extensive period of time, and she was by far my favorite, specifically due to her ability to connect with her employees on an empathetic and relatable level. She imparted wisdom and guidance on me, while also offering positive alternative suggestions to handle my workload. She was extremely smart, very likeable and always willing to assist.
I now wonder if her constant availability, personable demeanor and constructive criticism were tools she strategically utilized and made visible in an effort to successfully matriculate through the company. None of my male bosses were as accommodating and she was. Also, none of my male bosses were as nice either.
I don’t find it odd that out of all of the qualities noted in the vast articles about top qualities in corporate leaders, emotional connectivity is a constant on these lists when specifically discussing female leaders.

Tony Schwartz, the author of the “What Women Know…” article also pointed out that he meets far more women with this blend of qualities than he does men, and especially so when it comes to emotional and social intelligence.
He specifically noted, “For the most part, however, women, more than men, bring to leadership a more complete range of the qualities modern leaders need, including self-awareness, emotional attunement, humility and authenticity.” But do these emotional qualities necessarily equate to a more successful career as a leader?
Does utilizing these emotional and authentic qualities equal success both as a leader and as a company, where the bottom line is generally the sole indicator of winning?

The oldest licensed driver in New Zealand, and one of the oldest in the world, has been driving for 88 of his 105 years and has no plans to give it up, just as he intends to keep working out every morning in his home gym, and to keep regularly cooking meals for himself and his wife, who’s 91.

“In fact, I don’t think I’m old,” Edwards says. “Not really.”
He’s been involved in just one crash in his life and has gotten just one speeding ticket, a citation that still gets him riled up years later.
When he broke his left hip three years ago, his doctors said to stop driving for six weeks but he didn’t pay them much mind. After all, he says, he drives an automatic and only needs his right leg for that.
In New Zealand, drivers older than 80 must have their health and vision tested every two years to stay on the road.

According to Guinness World Records, the world’s oldest driver was American Fred Hale Sr. who was on the road until his 108th birthday in 1998.
Edwards drives three times a week to the store 15 kilometers (9 miles) down the road. He picks up groceries on Sundays and the newspapers on other days. Occasionally, he says, he’ll drive farther afield, to a medical appointment or to visit friends.
For much of the rest of his working life, he captained tourist and car ferries, fibbing about his age so he could work beyond what was then the mandatory retirement age of 60.
His wife, Lesley, stopped driving about 30 years ago. Her husband always took the wheel, anyway, and he will stay with it as long as he can.
“As far as I’m concerned, driving is a part of me,” he says. “I mean, that was me. I was a driver. And I could drive anything. Anything at all.”

Imagine a lake that’s never been affected by climate change or any other man-made influences. Australian scientists say they have found just that—a remote lake whose crystal-clear waters seem to be in the same chemical state as they were about 7,500 years ago....

“It’s like God’s bathtub,” Dr. Cameron Barr told the Australian Associated Press of the body of water now named Blue Lake. “It is beautiful. It is absolutely beautiful.”
Barr and his team of researchers from the University of Adelaide say the lake—one of the largest on North Stradbroke Island off the south Queensland coast, according to the AAP—is so pure that you can see more than 30 feet below the surface to its bottom.
“It appears that Blue Lake has been an important climate ‘refuge’ for the freshwater biota of the region, and is in the same condition now as it was 7,500 years ago,” Barr told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
Barr, who published his findings in the current issue of Freshwater Biology, said it’s the only such lake of its kind known to be in Australia.
To reach its conclusion, the team studied the lake’s water quality, fossil pollen and algae, which team members then compared with photos taken of nearby areas on the island over the past 117 years.
Several other nearby former lakes have dried up over the past 40 years due to climate change, Barr noted. In fact, Barr’s team was on North Stradbroke to study the effects of those former bodies of water when his team stumbled across the anomaly that is Blue Lake.
The lake’s water has remained unchanged, said Barr, because its waters drain into a nearby swamp and are replaced by an aquifer every 35 days or so.
“Because it’s constantly being updated it doesn’t suffer from the vagaries of the climate in so far as it doesn’t evaporate and become more saline,” Barr told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. “It doesn’t fill up and become fresher. It just remains constant.”
Barr said something as small as sunscreen samples from tourists could alter the lake’s chemistry.

The Czech Republic's first quintuplets, who were conceived naturally without IVF, have a 95% chance of growing up healthy, the Associated Press quoted Zbynek Stranak, chief doctor at the neonatal section of the institute, as saying.
The boys' names are reportedly Deniel, Michael, Alex and Martin, while the girl is called Terezka.

A 65 year old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment after he was found guilty to raping four minors....


John Ndun'gu was accused of defiling the four siblings in different days last year.

The court heard that the accused lured the siblings into his house where he committed the crime. He is said to have given them money to buy their silence.

According to the mother of the four siblings, she noticed a queer behaviour on the children especially the girls. They came home with gifts and beauty products unable to account for the source of money.

She found out later that the children had been given money by the 65 year old man.

The prosecutor told the court that the children confessed to their mother that they had been having s3x with the man in exchange for gifts.

Appearing before Naivasha Resident Magistrate Esther Boke, Ndun'gu pleaded guilty to the charges. He was sentenced to life imprisonment.

Residents of Eldoret were shocked yesterday by news that a deaf priest/ carpenter had been sexually abused by a woman after pretending to be a customer....

The middle aged man, who makes furniture to earn a living, alleged that the woman approached him claiming to be in need of a couch. They negotiated the price but after a while she called him inside saying that she had seen some new designs and was interested.

However, when he got inside the woman locked the workshop and started undressing. She remained naked and invited the carpenter to have s3x with her.

The carpenter told the media that he refused but the woman started touching his private parts and pulled off his shirt. She then unzipped his trousers before defiling him.

He explained the incident to other customers who were puzzled especially those familiar with the sign language.

Surprisingly he does not want to press charges, something that makes the police work harder because they cannot arrest the woman who is still at large. Now what remains is for his friends to convince him to report the matter to the police so that action is taken against the woman.

Former military Head of State and Congress for Progressives Change (CPC) national leader, General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd), yesterday opened up on why he shed tears in public during one of his presidential campaign rallies in 2011, saying he wept for Nigeria....

Buhari, who was guest of the week on a Kaduna-based radio station, revealed that when he read an article in one of the newspapers and saw the amazing opportunity Nigeria got through petroleum resources from 1999 to 2011, he shed tears.
