The Chairman of the premier Igbo organisation, Ohaneze Ndigbo, Chief Somtochukwu N'abania has cried out in desperation over a psychotic epidemic pervading Igboland. During a press conference with journalists, he cried for help from the Federal Government to provide assistance to the psychiatric wards in the South East. PSYCHOSIS EPIDEMIC ON THIS THREAD. . . . . |

EzeUche0: So what is the point of Ohanaeze choosing a candidate for all Igbo to follow ? You can't have it both ways. Highlight the individuality of the Igbo but then kowtow to Umbrella organisations like this whose mandate is shaky at best. Thesame goes for all the talk from organisations like Afenifere and the Northern Political Forum who seem to be able to hijack the debate without any challenge from the media. We all just seem to accept the legitimacy of organisations that were most likely formed on a whim by a couple of privileged and corrupt individuals. |

Lol. . . .I have your time. I really really have your time. Though I have to navigate all the swear words I will still answer you. The talk was never about how much money or financial muscle was available to help the British film Industry. The issue was whether there was public intervention when the industry went into a slide or not. The amount devoted to rejuvenating the industry would always be arbitrary and subject to the whims and caprices of whosoever is in charge of intervening. So all this talk about financial muscle is you indulging in conjectures. THE POINT IS PUBLIC INTERVENTION DOES NOT GIVE A FILM INDUSTRY IMMUNITY FROM A BOOM AND BUST CYCLE. If that is the case, it makes no sense wasting public funds on an industry that will inevitably find a way to make itself viable again. The fact is my friend. . . .Four Weddings And A Funeral was the exception when it came to successful British Films. Exception in terms of an out and out success that became a big hit. The vast majority of films that became huge and can be characterised as British have been by and large funded by private British and American studio money. That is the thread that runs through most of the biggest successes whether it is the hugely successful James Bond series from as far back as the middle of the last century or recent franchises like the HARRY POTTER and WORKING TITLE animation flicks. "The new century has so far been a relatively successful one for the British film industry. Many British films have found a wide international audience due to funding from BBC Films, Film 4 and the UK Film Council and some of the independent production companies, such as Working Title, have secured financing and distribution deals with major American studios." Now clearly this is only a quote. An expression of someone's opinion that is clearly not borne out by the facts on ground. I have put the link down here of the 20 biggest British films by gross. Besides Full Monty, none of the publicly funded films make any kinda imprint. And remember the UK FILM COUNCIL has apparently had a hand in 900 films since it was created in 2000, according to the council itself. http://sy09.ukfilmcouncil.ry.com/?id=41125 IF THIS IS NOT IRREFUTABLE EVIDENCE THAT THE SUCCESS OF THE LAST DECADE OR SO WAS DUE TO THE ABILITY TO ATTRACT PRIVATE FUNDING AND NOT THE CONTRIBUTION OF THE PUBLIC PURSE, I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO TELL YOU. An industry that was virtually dead, ramping up to be second in production level within 10-13 years, AND STILL REMAINS second, is bouyant. Now. . . .Since you seem to like the word conjecture so much. Is it not conjectural this your statement that a lack of quality is the reason why the industry is in decline? Actually its just false. The popular opinion as to why the industry declined was the expulsion of the marketers, the ersthwhile financiers of this films, by the intervention of the government. And for what reason were they expelled? The search for quality. the very same reason you advocate as to why the industry declined. There are fewer films being made is the major ingredient of the decline. You really don't know much about Nollywood do you? You really need to know your subject before you start opening your fat laden mouth. Who was your business teacher? Now see. . .this is an industry you described as ''BUOYANT'' above. YOU ARE SUCH A FOOL. LOL. . .in an ideal world. Of course the money would help. But the basis of my argument all along is that the situation in Nigeria is far from ideal. The Federal Government in Nigeria is constituted to fail on even the most basic tasks. That is why I brought up interventions that have been performed by the FG in other sectors that might predict the end result of this venture. Defining success in the creative industry is a very difficult thing and it is prone to all kinds of interpretations. Any monies put into this will most likely end up in someone's pockets largely because it is difficult to hold them accountable. They could simply bring up an arbitrary index to show the utilisation of funds. |

Sagamite: I know this trick Mumu. You hope I will get weary in the face of your silliness. I dare you to address the ones I have put up already. I don't have to be the one on the defensive. On Nollywood Buoyancy and the Textile Industry analogy. Address my arguments there and then we will move on to your other daft questions, Lol. . .I have your time well. Shebi you were begging me on the other thread to come here where no one is watching. . . I will show you how imperiously daft you are on this and other threads. Sagamite: Gutted . . . .I asked you a simple question and you were hoping others would come and respond on your behalf. YOU SAID NOLLYWOOD WAS BUOYANT. . . .I PROVED YOU WRONG WHICH SHOWED HOW DUMB YOU WERE TO OBJECT TO USING THE TEXTILE INDUSTRY INTERVENTION AS AN ANALOGY. . . I ALSO SHOWED YOU HOW YOUR OWN RELIANCE ON THE BRITISH MODEL DOES NOT OFFER ANY SUPPORT FOR THIS INTERVENTION. SO WHO GUTTED WHO? ALL THAT FAT IN YOUR BRAIN MUST BE CAUSING YOU ANEURYSMS. The thing is . . .you are nowhere near as smart as you think you are. You think aping the gung-ho debating tactics of SAURON will win you a debate. No it won't man. Or even worse. . hoping others will come to your rescue in some kind of gang up attack. That doesn't help either. You have been found out for the spoilt little kid you are. Now go get on a Stair master. Get rid of all that puppy fat. |

With what I have showed you now. . . THE QUESTION FOR YOU NOW IS. . . . . IF THE BRITISH INDUSTRY STILL WENT INTO DECLINE WITH EXTENSIVE PUBLIC INTERVENTION. WHY WOULD ANYONE SUGGEST GOVERNMENT INTERVENTION AS A PANACEA FOR OUR OWN AILING INDUSTRY? |
Politics / Re: GEJ At Silver Bird Anniversary! by ochocinco1(m): 3:39pm On Nov 12, 2010 |
Sagamite: Don't get paranoid Fat boy. . . .No bullying going on here lol Now show me where I said the Film Industry in Britain was not in decline? And no need to get pedantic , . . . .I apologise. What you said was NO ONE REALLY WATCHED BRITISH FILMS BEFORE FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL |
Politics / Re: GEJ At Silver Bird Anniversary! by ochocinco1(m): 3:34pm On Nov 12, 2010 |
Now. . . .You said my analogy using the textile industry was not apt based on your contention that Nollywood was buoyant. But I just gave you a link from an industry insider who clearly said ''NOLLYWOOD IS IN TROUBLE''. So your objection is overruled. And we can thus use the TEXTILE INDUSTRY intervention as a template for predicting the performance of this intervention right? |
Politics / Re: GEJ At Silver Bird Anniversary! by ochocinco1(m): 3:26pm On Nov 12, 2010 |
Sagamite: LOL, . . .This is so lame. Childish to be honest. I am getting to each point one by one. |
Politics / Re: GEJ At Silver Bird Anniversary! by ochocinco1(m): 3:18pm On Nov 12, 2010 |
Now. . .Pertaining to this quote you posted here. You did not see the beginnng line in the link (1990s) that said: "With Eady gone many studios closed or focused on television work, film production in the UK hit one of its all-time lows in 1989. While cinema audiences were climbing in the UK in the early 1990s, few British films were enjoying significant commercial success, even in the home market." Remember your contribution was that Public intervention helped to buoy the industry after it fell into hard times in 1989. And remember you also said FILM4 was an arm of CHANNEL 4 a public institution. So Intervention by FILM4 can be inferred as Public Intervention. And you also said Four Weddings and A Funeral was the first time people started watching British Films. A film that was produced by FILM4. Proof for you that public intervention helped the industry. BUT THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH YOUR ARGUMENT. FILM4 WAS SET UP IN 1982. WELL BEFORE THE CRASH OF THE FILM INDUSTRY IN 1989. SO PUBLIC INTERVENTION DID NOT SAVE THE INDUSTRY FROM CRASHING IN 1989 IF WE ARE TO FOLLOW YOUR LINE OF THOUGHT. And I will also add that the BBC has been involved in Film Production as far back as the 1950's when it bought Ealing Studios, the studio responsible for famous films like PASSPORT TO PIMLICO, THE LADYKILLERS etc. So Public Intervention was there when the FILM INDUSTRY CRASHED IN 1989. IT COULD NOT STOP IT. YOU FOLLOW. . . . . |

Sagamite: LOL. . . I thought it all sounded familiar. OMG. You are trying to imitate SAURON aren't you. Its unmistakable. You are a really sorry case. Honestly. No originality at all. If you deny it, I will post this quote in the United section and see what they think. So just shut up and don't deny it okay. ASSWIPE!!!!!!!! Now . . . .Unlike the ridiculous comment you made about British History, you managed to twist my words, but I will still address the questions. To show you how daft you simply are for even thinking you can score cheap points. 1. Dividing the pie six ways: You insist on saying ''dividing six ways''. I suggested this might be one of the ways the dictum of Federal character could play out. But the primary point was, a bureaucracy, whether committee or even a full fledged public body will need to be created to distribute the funds . And it could also play out that each region would create a film body which is a multiplication of bureaucracies. And what do bureaucracies do best. They meddle. They try to justify their existence and in so doing do more harm than good. 2. On Channel Four. Unlike the BBC, funding for Channel Four comes from both Advertising and the Public Purse. Which puts it in a bit of a dilemma. The fact it has to take money from the public purse means it is subject to public scrutiny about its output. So part of its budget must go to programmes that it knows will not make money. Channel 4's biggest franchise the past decade was BIG BROTHER and its Celebrity spin off. Solid, profit making fodder. Because of a racism row, the channel was criticised by Ofcom and the Culture Minister, disregarding the profits the company made from it. The Minister went on to say, "Channel 4 has always been at its strongest when it has closely adhered to its public purpose: innovative, educational, distinctive, and appealing to diverse audiences," This is what a broadcaster with even the tiniest bit of connection to the public purse has to cope with. Now imagine if it was our greedy and I TOO KNOW politicians. 3. And there was no conjecture about GEJ providing funds for films that would lose money. The provision of these funds would most likely be made without regard for whether there is going to be a profit or not. Primarily because there is no incentive to. Nepotism, tribalism and plain old corruption would most likely be the critical factors in determining where the money goes to, and not hardknuckle cost benefit analysis. ITS THE WAY BUSINESS HAS BEEN DONE. DON'T KNOW WHY YOU THINK IT WILL BE ANY DIFFERENT NOW. I do know actually. . .You are dumb. 4. Now on PHCN. You were probably too busy recollecting all the many times your Father called you a slowpoke that you did not consider what I wrote. My introduction of PHCN had to do with your naivete over extra funds not helping a venture. All I did was show you a venture where extra money has simply sucked in more and more money. More money poured into an institution does not equate to improvement. THAT IS ALL. I don't know what your point is about civil servants running PHCN. Or do you mean non - civil servants will administer these funds. Or GEJ will simply hand it from his bedroom to each nollywood producer that catches his fancy? I will echo your father again. . . .slowpoke. 5. Now, on the textile industry and the INTERVENTION FUND to help revive it. The fact it is a dead industry is irrelevant. The point is, the funds are trying to serve thesame purpose. Help an industry that is thought to be ailing. I don't know where you got this idea of a BUOYANT industry. If it was buoyant, why would government decide to intervene at all. You see this is what happens when you try to score cheap points. You take your eyes off the ball. And make moronic statements like No one really watched British Movies before Four Weddings and a Funeral |
