PoliticsPDP Goes To Court As Matawalle Joins APC Tomorrow by odiks(op): 1:37pm On Jun 28, 2021
Zamfara State governor, Bello Matawalle, will tomorrow join the All Progressives Congress (APC) from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), multiple sources have confirmed.

This is just as PDP has instituted a legal action to stop the Zamfara governor from dumping their party.

Barring any delay, it was gathered that the suit filed by some PDP chieftains against Matawalle’s defection would be mentioned today in court.

Yobe State governor and chairman of the caretaker committee of the APC, Mai Mala Buni has confirmed the defection of Matawalle in an invitation letter he issued on Saturday.

Buni, in the letter he personally signed, sighted by Daily Trust, said the Zamfara governor will be received at the Zamfara State Government House, Gusau, tomorrow.

According to the Yobe governor, Matawalle will join the APC together with his teeming supporters.

Similarly, on a local radio station in Zamfara State, an announcement was made to the effect that the governor will decamp to APC tomorrow. The announcement aired yesterday was made by Alhaji Ibrahim Dosara.

Daily Trust reports that there have been reports of the planned defection of Matawalle, who became governor of Zamfara State following the Supreme Court judgement on the crisis that rocked the APC in the state at the build up to the 2019 general the elections.

Also speaking, Senator Hassan Muhammad Nasiha (PDP, Zamfara) said arrangements have gone far on the defection.

The Senator told one of our correspondents yesterday that consultations were still going on, but expressed optimism that tomorrow would determine a new political direction for the governor and his teeming supporters.

Senator Nasiha had earlier held a meeting with stakeholders at the PDP Secretariat in Gusau, the state capital, where he asked them to move with Governor Matawalle to the APC.

Similarly, a former Commissioner for Rural Development and Cooperatives in Zamfara State, Alhaji Abubakar Abdullahi Tsafe, has also confirmed that the governor would pitch tent with the APC tomorrow.

Tsafe, a chieftain of the APC in Zamfara State was the first to call on Matawalle to join APC in March last year. He was one of the APC chieftains in the cabinet of Matawalle until it was dissolved early this month.

In a statement he personally signed yesterday, Tsafe said: “all arrangements have been concluded for the governor to join the APC. We will formally receive him on Tuesday.”

“When as a member of his cabinet, I was appealing to the governor to join the APC, a lot of people expressed reservations but to the glory of Allah, he has accepted to join,” he added.

The President’s Personal Assistant on New Media, Bashir Ahmad, in a Facebook post earlier on Sunday, wrote: “So Zamfara is back home. Welcome Matawalle”

Our correspondents observed that he has been avoiding PDP gatherings of recent. Two weeks ago, when PDP governors in company of the party’s national chairman, Prince Uche Secondus, met in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, the Zamfara governor was conspicuously absent. He sent his deputy to represent him.

When PDP governors also welcomed former Governor Donald Duke of Cross River State to the party from the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Matawalle also sent his deputy to represent him.

The PDP Publicity Secretary in the state, Alhaji Farouk Ahmad Shattima said the party would brief newsmen later, while the APC Vice Chairman, Alhaji Sani Gwamna Mayanchi said the party would issue a statement later.

Yari’s camp holds emergency meeting in Kaduna

Meanwhile, the camp of the leader of the APC in Zamfara State, Alhaji Abdulaziz Yari will hold an emergency meeting over the planned defection of Matawalle today in Kaduna.

A reliable source around the former governor told one of our correspondents that at the end of the meeting, a communique will be issued to announce their position on the matter.

Yari, a former governor of the state and his teeming supporters are said to be against the defection of Matawalle to APC.

Meanwhile, the immediate past National Secretary of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Dr Sani Abdulahi Shinkafi, has resigned from the party to join Matawalle into the APC.

Reno posted a three paragraphs statement on Facebook, describing Gulak’s killing as painful and senseless.

According to him: “Ahmed Gulak’s death is painful to me. I wanted to confirm it before commenting. No matter the circumstances of his death, killing him will not augur well for Nigeria, for the simple reason that he had a mindset which did not look down on others due to tribe or religion.

“People like Ahmed are needed to bridge the divide between North and South. This was just a senseless killing. It will not serve the interests of those who may have done it, and it further heightens the type of tension whose end result no one can determine.

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has dismissed a suit seeking to disqualify the Deputy Governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the September 19, 2020, election in Edo state, Mallam Gani Audu.

The suit, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/758/2020, was filed by the Action Democratic Party (ADP).

It alleged that Audu presented forged documents to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The plaintiff also alleged that the documents contain misleading discrepancies especially in name arrangement.

However, in a ruling on Monday, the court dismissed the suit with cost.

Abuja Court dismisses suit seeking to disqualify Ize-Iyamu’s running mate, Gani Audu

A suit seeking to disqualify the Deputy Governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress in the September 19th election in Edo state, Mallam Gani Audu has been dismissed.

The suit which was filed by the Action Democratic Party (ADP), alleged that Mallam Gani Audu, presented forged documents to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The case slated for ruling for the day was between Hon. Momoh Abdulrazak vs the APC in suit number FHC/ABJ/CS/758/2020.

The plaintiffs had claimed that Mallam Gani Audu’s certificate was forged and containing some misleading discrepancies especially in name arrangement as submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The issue before the court was whether the matter had become academic, hypothetical, and having no live issue to be determined.

In delivering it's ruling, the court raised two issues for determination - whether the matter was a pre-election matter as claimed by the plaintiffs' counsel, Mr F.N Nwosu and whether the matter had become an academic exercise, having regards to the 19th September, 2020 election.

On the 1st issue, the court held that the matter was not a pre-election matter having being instituted by the plaintiffs who do not fall under the category of persons entitled under section 285(14) 1999 CFRN as amended to institute pre-election matters.

The court further stated that it is rather an objection under section 31(5) Electoral Act.
On the second issue, the court stated that the relief under section 31(6) Electoral Act has been overtaken by events. The court further stated that the matter has become sterile, obsolete and of no effect.

Also, that the court declined jurisdiction to continue to hear the matter and subsequently struck it out.

PoliticsThree PDP Govs Negotiate With APC As Others Reassure Party - Thisday by odiks(op): 11:21am On Nov 20, 2020
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may shed more gubernatorial weight if ongoing negotiations between three of its governors and the ruling All Progressives Congress succeed.

Ebonyi State Governor, Mr. Dave Umahi, had on Tuesday opened the impending floodgate of defections when he deserted the PDP and pitched his tent with the APC complaining that the main opposition party had treated his South-east home zone shabbily.

THISDAY gathered last night that three PDP governors are deep in discussions with the APC and might jump ship shortly.

The governors in transition, according to multiple sources close to the discussions, are

1. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu),

2. Prof. Ben Ayade (Cross River) and

3. Senator Bala Mohammed (Bauchi).

It is not clear why the governors want to leave their party that had given them abundant opportunities to be politically relevant, a PDP source in the know of the move told THISDAY last night.

However, governors of the party yesterday gave assurances of their loyalty and commitment to support and strengthen it after a meeting of its National Executive Committee (NEC) in Abuja.

Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum and Sokoto State Governor, Hon. Aminu Tambuwal, spoke on behalf of his colleagues at the 90th NEC meeting in Abuja.

The governors’ pledge followed the defection of Umahi.

The National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus, who presided over the meeting, seized the opportunity to warn that there would be no transparent general election in 2023 without amendment to the Electoral Act 2010 as amended.

Tambuwal said the PDP governors are more than united as could be seen in the fact all the governors attended the meeting.

He said: “All 15 of us are here present. We are individually committed to good governance in our various states in order to make our party strong.

“This is a clear statement that we are united and working towards strengthening our party for the future.”

The Chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees (BoT), Senator Walid Jibrin, told the gathering that the PDP remains strong in Ebonyi State despite the exit of Umahi.

He faulted reasons adduced by Umahi for leaving for the APC but said it was a thing of joy that the PDP structure in the state remains intact.

Jibrin expressed delight that the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) took proactive steps to ensure that Umahi did not take undue advantage of the PDP structure in the state.

Also speaking on behalf of the PDP caucus in the National Assembly, the Senate Minority Leader, Senator Enyinanya Abaribe, assured the party leadership that the caucus is prepared to fight against anti-media legislation “with every drop of our blood.”

He said: “The attempt to gag each and every one of us by the government talking about the media, I can assure you that we shall fight with the last drop of our drop and that attempted legislation will not see the light of the day.

“We are also going to ensure that in the Electoral Act that we are tampering with now, we will be putting all the safeguards and ensure that our vote will always count.

“We also want to use this opportunity to appeal to the national party that as we work towards the 2023 elections, party discipline will be most important to us.

“Our members need to always be sure that they can depend on the national party for protection in and wherever they are.”

Secondus, however, said there would be no transparent general election in 2023 without amending the Electoral Act.

He added that Nigeria is now on autopilot due to the incapacity of the present administration that has piled up over N31 trillion debts.

He described the defection of Umahi to the APC as a personal voyage, adding that the party cannot be intimidated or blackmailed.

Secondus, in his address to the NEC meeting, urged members of the party in the National Assembly to work hard to ensure a new Electoral Act is passed before the 2023 general election.

PoliticsUmahi’s Defection: Wike, Eight More PDP Governors To Join APC - Yahaya Bello by odiks(op): 8:40pm On Nov 19, 2020
Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, believes more governors from the main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will join the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Following the defection of the Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi, from the PDP to the APC, Governor Bello stated that the ruling party would welcome nine more governors from the opposition.

“I think probably, I can just give you an expo,” he told Channels Television’s political correspondent Seun Okinbaloye who asked him a series of questions on the latest development when he appeared as a guest on Politics Today on Thursday.

The governor added, “The expo I am going to give to you is that Governor Wike might be the last to join this party – the All Progressives Congress, others are lining up. They will soon be here.”

He commended the decision of the Ebonyi State governor to leave his former party for the APC, saying the defection was a testimony of the progress in the ruling party.

Eight Are Already Knocking

According to Governor Bello, APC is a party that believes in fairness, equity, and justice, with a strong belief in the unity and oneness of the country.

He also believes the party has carried out people-oriented programmes and policies, saying that would encourage more opposition governors to join.

“I said it long ago, not today when the party (PDP) was going through some challenges; I did say that there are 10 governors from the opposition parties that will join APC.

“We have seen one; one that is even as equal as 10, he has joined us, nine to go. Just mark my words; I don’t lie, I will never lie, and I will never deceive anybody,” the Kogi governor stressed.

He added, “Umahi is here with us, more are coming. I am very sure that Governor Wike will be the 10th person (governor) to join the APC, the remaining eight are already knocking, and by the grace of God, we are working all the necessary platform for them to come in here in peace, so they are on their way.”

PoliticsDefection: I Am Proud Of You, Buhari Tells Umahi by odiks(op): 8:56pm On Nov 18, 2020
The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), says he is proud of Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi, for defecting to the All Progressives Congress.

The president commended the defection of Umahi to APC, describing it “as a bold move driven purely by principle rather than opportunistic motives.”

This was contained in a press statement by Senior Special Assistant to the President, Garba Shehu, on Wednesday.

The statement was titled, ‘President Buhari praises Umahi’s defection, says it’s based on principle rather than coercion’.

It quoted Buhari as saying, “I am proud of Governor David Umahi for taking this bold decision in accordance with his conscience and principles rather than any external influence or coercion.

“Good governance is very important to us in the APC, and I’m glad that the governor has cited this as a major factor in his decision to join us. I urge our citizens to pay less emphasis on identity politics if we want our democracy to make a positive impact on our country.”

He noted that “with men like Umahi, I foresee a brighter future for our democracy because the voters will be more motivated by performance records of parties and their candidates.”

“Let me once again; commend the boldness of Governor Umahi for taking this courageous decision in a country where principles are in short supply among many. I know people might call him names, but that is the price men of principles have to pay for acting according to their conscience and convictions,” Buhari added.

PoliticsUmahi: My Only Sin In PDP Is That I Refused To Castigate Buhari by odiks(op): 4:39am On Nov 18, 2020
Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi, on Tuesday said he became an object of suspicion to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) because of his refusal to criticise the President, Muhammadu Buhari.

He made the comment while briefing reporters in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital on his defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Governor Umahi said, “Every man runs his destiny. One thing I have promised is that I will never castigate PDP; just like in PDP, my only sin is that I refused to castigate Mr President and till thy kingdom come, I will not do that because that is my family character.”

“But those who don’t have character, they were very suspicious of me because I don’t castigate the President, that I could be leaking information of PDP.

“What nonsense is that? I came from a known family and a place where there is character. So, I have got a character; nobody either in APC or PDP will say that whoever discusses anything, I have to go and leak it. To leak it for what? Is it for money, is it for fame?” he questioned.

‘I Have No Regret’

The governor disclosed that the decision to leave the PDP for the APC was to protest against what he described as the injustice of the opposition party to the South East.

According to him, claims that he left the PDP because of an ulterior motive of contesting for president in the next general elections are far from the truth.

Governor Umahi stressed that he was contended as a two-term governor, adding that he would be quitting politics in 2023.

He stated, “Let it be known to all that nobody promised me anything, let it be known to all that I moved because of injustice, and I have no regret about that.

“Some people say I will regret this movement, I laugh at them; as if they saw God, as if they are my God. I am satisfied being a businessman, I am satisfied doing my businesses and that is all.”

***Zone to reject VP slot

Ahead of the 2023 Presidential elections, some prominent leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, from South East geopolitical zone have threatened to dump the party for the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, if the presidential ticket was not ceded to the zone.

The PDP leaders also vowed not to take vice presidential position from the party, saying that anyone from the zone that accepts vice presidential ticket will be tagged as an enemy of the zone.

A former governor from the zone who spoke to Vanguard on condition of anonymity said that South East has been faithful to the PDP since 1998 despite what happened to the late former Vice President, Dr. Alex Ekweme at the convention in Jo’s.

According to him, “If the PDP refuses to zone the 2023 Presidential ticket to the South East, we will be left with no other option than to leave the party.

“We are solidly behind the position of our brother and Governor of Ebonyi State, Engr. David Umahi. We have supported the party (PDP) and it will be unfortunate if the party decides to take our support for granted.

“We have also vowed that we are not going to accept Vice Presidential ticket from the party and any son or daughter from the zone that accepts to be vice to anyone will be tagged as an enemy of the zone.

“I can also assure you that if the PDP refuses to zone its Presidential ticket to the South East and Governor Umahi leaves, other governors, members of the National Assembly and key stakeholders of the party from South East will also leave.

“You will be surprised with the kind of tsunami that will hit the PDP if it does not handle the issue well. There must be equity and fairness. We should learn how to reward our loyal and dedicated members.

“From the signals we are getting, the APC appears to be ready to zone its presidential ticket to South East and we cannot leave such gesture and follow a party that doesn’t appreciate your loyalty.

“You know that the APC had promised to consider zoning its presidential candidate for 2023 to South East if President Muhammadu Buhari was reelected in 2019. You also know that the President is an upright man. We have the conviction that he will ensure that the APC cedes the position to the zone.

“Some people are already mobilizing for #EndVP protest in South East and we are going to ensure that we make resources available to that effect. It’s going to be a collective thing. And I am assuring you that the country will not regret having a President of South East extraction come 2023.”

PoliticsEbonyi Lawmakers Give PDP 7 Days Ultimatum To Zone Presidency To South-East by odiks(op): 5:33am On Oct 20, 2020
The plot for the defection of top government officials in Ebonyi State to the All Progressives Congress (APC) thickened yesterday with the state House of Assembly giving a seven-day ultimatum to the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to zone the presidency to the South-east zone in 2023.

The ultimatum has strengthened the speculation that the Governor, Chief Dave Umahi, is planning to lead executive council members and the state lawmakers, elected on PDP platform, to join the APC.

Umahi, who is rumoured to be nursing higher political ambition in 2023, had reportedly perfected plans to cross over to the nation’s ruling party.

At a press conference in Abakaliki, the state capital, the Speaker of the Assembly, Hon. Francis Nwifuru, warned that the PDP would pay heavily if the party fails to adhere to the request.

Twenty two out of the 24 members of the state House of Assembly were present while two lawmakers were absent.

The lawmakers also warned the PDP not to contemplate removing the National Chairman of the party, Prince Uche Secondus.

Nwifuru said: “We are giving our great party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), seven days’ ultimatum to summon the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party and zone the position of the presidency to the South-east, Nigeria, especially as INEC has officially announced the date of the presidential election.

He said: “Equally, the party should not contemplate to remove the National Chairman of the party, Prince Uche Secondus, as it is customary that the zone (South) from where the National Chairman comes from produces the presidential candidate of the party. If this advice is not adhered to, it will further divide and destabilise the party along sectional and regional lines.

“Failure to adhere to these kind requests will cost our party heavily and we, the honourable members of the sixth Ebonyi State House of Assembly will leave no stone unturned in taking decisive actions to ensure that traditions and dividends of democracy are respected in our party.”

The lawmakers noted that since the rebirth of democracy in 1999, the South-east zone has paid its dues having worked assiduously and massively voted for all the presidential candidates of PDP from other zones in the country, stressing that in the spirit of democracy, equity, justice and fairness, the presidency, come 2023, be zoned to the South-east.

PoliticsGov David Umahi, Ebonyi LG Bosses To Defect To APC This Week by odiks(op): 10:10am On Oct 19, 2020
Speculations that the Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi, has dumped the Peoples Democratic Party for the ruling All Progressives Congress may likely be confirmed this week.

On Saturday, speculations were rife that Umahi had moved to the APC even though he and his media aide denied the move.

The member representing the Ezza South/Ikwo Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Chinedu Ogah, on Saturday, confirmed to our correspondent that Umahi had joined the APC and charged anyone doubting the information to quote him anywhere and at anytime.

He had said, “Yes, Governor Umahi’s defection to our great party, the APC, is a step in the right direction. We cannot afford to remain in opposition. We must join the ruling party to continue to reap the dividends of democracy.

“I am calling on other governors in the South-East to toe the line of Governor Umahi and join the APC. We have to be at the centre; we have to join mainstream politics for the overall development of our zone and the country in general.

“President Muhammadu Buhari has done well. Everybody should join the APC to encourage him.”

Rumours of Umahi’s defection to the APC were rife after he was said to have held a series meetings with several leaders of the APC, including the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on Friday.

Also, a source in the Presidency, who spoke to our correspondent on condition of anonymity, said Umahi’s defection had been concluded and a document to that effect had been taken and filed at the “Blue Room” in Aso Rock.

The source described the “Blue Room” as a special room in Aso Rock, where any document or item kept therein was regarded as sacrosanct and regarded as being of utmost importance by the Presidency.

It was also gathered that the governor, on arrival from Abuja, where he had spent close to two weeks, on Saturday held a crucial meeting with all the 13 local government area chairmen and communicated the seeming move to them.

The council bosses might likely move to the ruling party with the governor, The PUNCH learnt.

A member of the APC and spokesman of Alaigbo Development Foundation, Chief Abia Onyike, also said the defection of Umahi was very true.

Onyike stated, “Governor Umahi’s defection is very true. With the influence of people like Senator Obinna Ogba and the other National Assembly members, he appears uncomfortable in the PDP as the party can no longer give him the edge he enjoyed ab initio. That was fallout of the state congress boycotted by the Abuja group, which petitioned the national leadership of the party. So, he had no option but to look elsewhere.

“The PDP is no longer ready to allow him to produce the National Vice Chairman of the party in the yet to be organised zonal congress. He wants to be in the APC to pursue his presidential ambition.”

The correspondent needs to be fired for his lackadaisical attitude towards his job.
Giving false reportage over a sensitive info like this.

There are qualified journalists who are serious who can take his or her place.

I don't really know what is happening to the Punch news paper nowadays. It was the best news paper before but it is being killed by unnecessary fake news, This very paper reported a collapse of a church in Ilorin this week, whereas, there was no single truth in the report. They are deliberately killing this paper
It's terrible

You think it was mistake or incompetence? He may have been paid handsomely for this. All segments of Nigeria have been so corrupted beyond redemption.

Editor’s Note

In the story, ‘Return to APC, Ize-Iyamu begs Obaseki’, published in The PUNCH of Thursday, September 24 and Punchng.com, we reported that the candidate of the All Progressives Congress in the 2020 governorship election in Edo State, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, had appealed to Governor Godwin Obaseki to return to the APC.

We have discovered that this story, based on a report filed by our Edo State correspondent, is untrue as it was based on an old video clip.

We therefore wish to apologise to Pastor Ize-Iyamu for the embarrassment this story might have caused him.

We are currently reappraising our editorial processes to ensure that this lapse does not recur.
