So Saraki and Dogara came? Thought they were planning a walkout and defecting to PDP? So they stayed back after the initial Grara? |
Waiting for the aggrieved members to stage a walk out.

The truth is that all the Senators and Rep members from the east are aware of the cut but thought that the executives will not scrutinize it and cry foul when they discovered any thing. Its a strategy that did not work they wanted to use it and condemn the executives that they marginalized the SE had it been that the executives did not open up.Hunter come become the Hunted. They actually wanted to demarket PMB by shouting... This APC government never hide their hatred for south easterners..... the gullible Ipob youths would have believed them. |
A House of Representatives member from Ekiti State, Mr. Olamide Oni and other People’s Democratic Party (PDP) chieftains have joined the All Progressives Congress (APC). They defected to the APC on Saturday when the campaign train of the party’s governorship flag bearer rolled into communities in Irepodun/Ifelodun, Ekiti West, Ekiti Southwest and Efon Local Government Areas. Oni, who represents Ekiti Central Federal Constituency II in the Green Chamber of the National Assembly, joined with his Personal Assistant, Mr. Banji Filani and scores of supporters in his hometown, Efon Alaaye. Other communities visited by Fayemi and his team include Iwaji, Ipole-Iloro, Ikogosi, Erijiyan, Igbara-Odo, Ilawe, Igede and Iyin. Thousands of crowds defied the rain in Ilawe to listen to Fayemi and other APC leaders. Ondo State Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu joined the rally at Ilawe to the admiration of the crowd urging Ekiti people to vote Fayemi to enjoy good governance and restoration of life-changing policies. Others are Afolabi Olasope, a lawyer and former First Bank Secretary in Nigeria and Overseas, who also won Ekiti Central Constituency Two seat in the House of Representatives under UNCP. Aanu Oni, who is former Special Adviser in PDP administration, also defected. Others included immediate past State Women Leader of PDP, Busola Oni; Dele Jeje, who is father of Efon Local Government Chairman, Bobby Jeje; and Local Government Woman Leader, Olomi Adeniyi. Oni said: “PDP leaders are always fighting for personal benefits while the masses suffer and an example is the administration of Fayose in Ekiti. State. “I was always insisting that they should make the general well-being of the people their focus, but they have always argued that they are in politics for personal benefit. “After discovering that this is the tradition in PDP, I had to leave for a party that wants to work for the benefit of all as we have seen in all development projects by APC administration of Fayemi.” Residents complained of neglect, unemployment, sufferings among the aged and salary payment default by the administration of Fayose, asking Fayemi to restore their hopes again. Fayemi promised to continue all his social service programmes, including social security stipends for the elderly people, YCAD, volunteer scheme, entrepreneurship scheme, rural development, road construction and health services while workers and teachers will enjoy regular pay and promotions. He regretted that not a single project was added to all the projects he executed in the communities visited, promising to complete all abandoned projects for the benefit of the people, adding that all his development and empowerment schemes would continue. In particular, Fayemi promised to complete work on radio booster station in Efon, while the abandoned water project will also be completed. The APC flag bearer promised good times for pensioners, assuring that retired people will receive their entitlements regularly. He debunked insinuations by the opposition that he would ban okada operations and sack teachers and local government workers if he wins the election. He said: “I am sure that by now Ekiti people would have had enough of Fayose’s lies. He has been going round to deceive Ekiti people that I will sack workers to dissuade them from voting for APC so that he can continue to inflict more pains on the people while he enjoys himself in government. “I will never ban okada or sack teachers and local government workers because I am not a promoter of sufferings. “I made salary payment my priority, including payment of teachers’ rural posting and core subjects allowances. We shall continue to fulfill this obligation, including looking for new ways to promote the welfare of all categories of workers.” At Ikogosi where scores of PDP chiefs and no fewer than 50 other supporters defected to APC, residents lamented the closure of Ikogosi Resort and Gossy Water that resulted in job losses. Fayemi assured that the business concerns would be reactivated to provide jobs for the residents. He dismissed insinuations that he will sack teachers and local government workers, saying his records had shown that he was never an anti-worker governor. Residents assured Fayemi that all the beneficiaries of his policies would work for his success at polls. Fayemi assured the people of adequate security before, during and after the election. State Chairman of APC, Chief Olajide Awe, urged supporters to mobilise at the unit level and ensure they get their voter cards ready to vote on election day. http://thenationonlineng.net/rep-others-dump-pdp-for-apc/ |

The Nigerian government has reacted to an allegation by former President Olusegun Obasanjo that the Buhari administration was plotting his arrest on false charges. The former leader made the allegation on Friday in a statement by his aide. He said there were plans to detain him indefinitely as punishment for speaking out against the government’s maladministration and ineptitude. The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, who reacted on behalf of the government said the Buhari Administration will not be distracted by “frivolous allegations from any quarter, especially those cleverly choreographed to divert attention from a widely-acclaimed presidential proclamation and to shore up support for a waning and egotistical cause”. In a statement issued in Lagos on Friday, the Minister said the administration is “too busy trying to clear the mess of 16 years and build on its unprecedented achievements over the past three years to waste its energy and time on framing up anyone or dwelling on issues that are not grounded in fact”. He said while “those who have skeletons in their wardrobes should be afraid, even of their own shadows, innocent persons need not worry about any investigation, whether real or imagined”. ”This administration will never engage in a frame-up of innocent citizens. That is neither in the character of President Muhammadu Buhari nor in that of his administration. Only the guilty should be worried. To paraphrase an African proverb, a man who has no wife cannot lose an inlaw to the cold hands of death. ”The administration is also strongly committed to the tenets of democracy, including freedom of speech and the right to dissent. But we understand that those who, in their time, were untethered to those principles would find it hard to believe,” Alhaji Mohammed said. The Minister said it was curious that the frame-up and witch-hunt allegations came a day after a major presidential proclamation reversing some past acts of injustice was made, to the relief and acclamation of a long-expectant nation. ”Apparently, the impact of this proclamation was too much to bear by those who, through acts of omission or commission, helped to deepen the wounds inflicted by the blow of injustice that followed an election that was widely acclaimed to be free, fair and credible, hence they felt the need for a red herring that will distract the nation. ”Added to that is the frustration brought about by the fact that the contraption they have so much hyped as a freeway to power has failed to gain traction. Faced with this double tragedy, even the strongest of men may begin to succumb to a figment of their imagination. They may start crying wolf where there is none,” he said. Mr Mohammed said the “unprecedented achievements of the Buhari Administration are also enough to cause sleepless nights, with the attendant symptoms that include phantasm, for those who had better opportunities to make the country great but floundered on the altar of narcissism”. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/271660-just-in-nigerian-govt-reacts-to-obasanjos-arrest-claim.html |
Tofa won in almost all the South East states except Anambra? Mmmmmh..... Could it be why most/some of my brothers and sisters are not happy since yesterday? |
The number one topic in the polity at the moment is June 12, 1993 election, adjudged as freest and fairest in the history of the country. The issue of the election regained prominence following the declaration of June 12 as Democracy Day by President Muhammadu Buhari and the posthumous GCFR award conferred on MKO Abiola, presumed winner of the election. The election was between Bashir Tofa of the National Republican Convention (NRC) and Abiola of the Social Democratic Party (SDP). The National Electoral Commission (NEC) chaired by Humphrey Nwosu (pictured) declared the results in only 14 states before the regime of former military president Ibrahim Babaginda annulled the exercise. According to unofficial results, Tofa got a total of 5,952,087 (41.64%) of votes nationwide while Abiola, running on the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), scored 8,341,309 (58.36%). The total vote cast was 14,293,396. Abiola won 19 of the 30 states, leaving Tofa with 11 states. https://www.thecable.ng/flashback-full-result-controversial-june-12-93-election

The Abiola family has written to thank President Muhammadu Buhari for awarding the nation’s highest honour to their patriarch, MKO Abiola, the presumed winner of the 1993 June 12 presidential election. Mr Buhari announced the award on Wednesday and also declared June 12 as democracy day starting from 2019, shifting the date from May 29. The decision has drawn mixed reactions from Nigerians. Mr Buhari also honoured late activist, Gani Fawehinmi, and Mr Abiola’s vice presidential candidate, Babagana Kingibe. In a letter to the president, dated June 6, 2018, Mr Abiola’s son, Kola, said he was appreciating the decision on behalf of the family. “Your Excellency, as I wrote in my letter to you on June 12, 2016, in our minds, the award was the only befitting recognition of the importance of Chief Abiola’s fight for democracy for Nigeria which culminated in 4 years incarceration/solitary confinement and decimation of his business and financial interests, before the ultimate sacrifice, being his life on July 7, 1998 at the age of 60,” he wrote. “Your Excellency, your decision to also designate June 12 as Democracy Day rights the wrongs done to all the nation-builders and heroes that produced that produced the democratic credentials on which the Nigerian polity now thrives. We are profoundly grateful to the people from all corners of Nigeria that worked tirelessly to ensure the most free and fair elections in our nation’s history in 1993, fought valiantly for the Hope ’93 mandate given to Bashorun Abiola by the Nigerian people and died trying to protect the mandate.” “Mr President, I thank you earnestly for heeding our plea where others before you did not, whilst conveying the assurances of my highest esteem.” https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/271516-breaking-abiolas-family-writes-buhari-over-gcfr-award-june-12.html

Mmmmmh.... Which one be Dabaru things? More stories from Daily Sun... Offa robbery suspects open up Molly Kilete, Abuja Ring leader of the bloody bank robbery in Offa, Kwara State, on April 5, Ayoade Akinnibosun, has confessed that a top aide of Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed gave him two AK-47 rifles two days to the ward congress of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state. He said the weapons were handed over to him to neutralise political thugs allegedly brought in by a minister. He, however, said he and his boys were able to handle the minister’s loyalists without the use of guns. He also said he later handed over the guns to the governor’s aide at the end of the exercise. Apart from the guns, he told Daily Sun exclusively that the aide gave him a Lexus SUV, which he used for the robbery but had to drop it before getting to the scene of the robbery. Akinnibosun, in an interview with Daily Sun in Abuja, also revealed how he accompanied Saraki, to the palace of the Olofa of Offa on April 7, after the robbery attack and gruesome murder of over 30 persons, including nine police personnel. Saraki was at the palace on a sympathy visit. “Yes, when the senate president visited the palace of the Olofa of Offa, I was there. It was me, and this my two other gang members who are here with me (in police custody) and one other guy, Murphy, that went with me on that visit. On getting there, me and Murphy and these two were with the senate president until he left. We had not driven far after he left when we heard again that he was going back to the palace. We went back there and waited for him but he didn’t come back.” He said he got to know about the visit not from the senate president but from a friend, Samson. “We have a platform; all these political platforms. That is where we get information. But specifically, it was Sampson that first called me to say the senate president will be going to Offa, that we should go there; that he too was on his way and that Senator Rafiu is also coming. That was how we went there. “I cannot say he (Saraki) knows me. He may know me as a member of APC, but it was through Sampson that I got to know about the visit to the palace of the Olofa. And when he now left, Senator Rafiu came. After Senator Rafiu left, he was on his way and we were going together because we were going back to Oro. On his way, he now stopped at Eleyooka to ease himself. That was where he gave us N50,000 to share. We are many because whenever the leader or the senate president is around, youths from all over usually gather together and they give us something.” As a youth leader in charge of his zone in Kwara south, the suspect said his duty was to mobilise youths during elections, campaign, voting and cause confusion if it was so directed by his principals. As a politician, he said he has been working for the Kwara State governor and by extension the senate president for over ten years, but that they did not know he was into armed robbery. He said his link to both the governor and Saraki, was a certain government official, who he claimed was responsible for the welfare of the youth group that he led. “We meet only when it was necessary or when there was a political outing in the state,” he said. Akinnibosun, who claimed to be a graduate of Guidance and Counseling from the Kwara State College of Education, Oro, said he got into armed robbery through the “work of the devil” after a friend he identified simply as Michael introduced him to it. Apart from luring him and his friends, the said Michael also trained them on how to shoot. He said the dismissed police officer took him and his gang members into a bush in one of the villages for training. “I am the coordinator of Kwara South Liberation Youth Movement. We have a forum all over Kwara South. Two cars were given to us as a kind of empowerment to help the youth get something to do. I drove the Lexus to Ajashe, parked it and joined the other members of the gang who were already in a waiting vehicle from where we took off Offa.” But he could not say what they made from the robbery which involved five banks, “because we didn’t go inside the bank. Michael said he was going to give us our share and we were yet to get anything from him before they arrested us.” Asked how he got the vehicle back to Government House, Akinnibosun said: “When I heard that they have arrested my friend, Kunle, I gave my car key to one Ade and told him I was going to the police station to see Kunle. That was how I was attested. I gave the keys to Ade, he is a politician and he is here too (police custody.)” Meanwhile, operatives of the Inspector General of Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT) have invited some officials of the Kwara Government House including Salawudeen Hassan Giegele, personal assistant to the governor on Central, Amu Ibiwoye, special assistant to the governor on agriculture and Ishola Abdulateeef, workshop manager, to Abuja, to clear the air on how the vehicle that was used for the Offa bank robbery operation, got into the Government House and their relationship with Akinnibosun. It was gathered that one of the Government House officials told police interrogators that the vehicle was actually given to the suspect as part of the government’s empowerment programme. The official, according to police sources, said the three vehicles, a Lexus Jeep and two Toyota, were given to the suspect and some other persons to be used for car hire services at the airport to enable them cater for their families. He also said the vehicle was not registered at the time it was handed over to the suspect who is also the gang leader of the group. It was gathered that the IRT operatives discovered that the vehicle was registered by the government after it was declared wanted by the police. An IRT operative who did not want to be mentioned, told Daily Sun, “we are not saying that the senate president empowered the suspects to go and rob; all we are after is how the vehicle that was used for a robbery operation that left over 30 persons found its way to the Government House. That’s what we are after.” At press time, the Government House officials were still being quizzed at the IRT office. http://sunnewsonline.com/offa-robbery-suspects-open-up/

Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State has vowed never to castigate President Muhammadu Buhari to prove that he was still in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Mr Umahi made the declaration on Saturday night in Abakaliki during a media chat and dinner he organised for journalists as part of the 2018 Democracy Day celebrations. The governor noted that his decision was a matter of principle, stressing that Mr Buhari remained his only boss. “I have left all those issues to political parties not because the president is doing everything right but because he is not God. “He might not be doing everything 100 per cent but it is not my duty to castigate my boss and will only face my duties. “It is also not my duty to write petitions about the past administration in the state and I am focused towards my duties as child of God who has a calling and is committed,” he said. The governor noted that corruption was not a party affair but an issue that has to do with the individual engaging in it. “The Bible says that with the fear of God, men depart from evil and without effective tackling of corruption, Nigeria will never develop. “It is not an issue concerned with the PDP and if those who decamped from the party to the country’s ruling party says it is corrupt, then they have infected their new party with corruption,” he said. He declared that his constant mention of opposition members in the state during solidarity rallies in his honour does not mean that he was threatened by their activities and antics. “No member of the opposition can stand for election with me because they have no base in the state and are only deceiving the people. “They are not working for the president as they deceitfully claim but are big minuses for the opposition party because most of them don’t own houses in the state. “They boast of using the federal might to rig the 2019 elections but the youths have warned anyone planning to execute such act to write two things: the fake results and his will,” the governor said. Mr Umahi listed his administration’s development strides in education, health, human empowerment, infrastructure and security, among others, noting that Ebonyi would be Nigeria’s Dubai after his eight years tenure. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that journalists and individuals across the state and beyond asked questions on state and national issues. Top government officials including the Secretary to the State Government, the Chief of Staff, legislators and some cabinet members, among others, were however locked out because of lateness. But they were admitted into the venue after the interactive session. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/269934-ill-never-castigate-buhari-pdp-governor-vows.html |
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has reacted to a report about a former member of the party, Timi Frank in which he was described as a ‘Chieftain’ of the party. A statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr Bolaji Abdullahi on Sunday said it wished to correct the wrong designation and remind the public that “Timi Frank has since November 2016 been suspended as a member of the APC”. The decision according to the party was a recommendation by its disciplinary committee and subsequent ratification by the Party’s South-South Zonal Executive Committee. Abdullahi therefore, said: “whatever position Timi Frank holds or canvasses is done in his personal capacity and has no bearing on the APC”. In a statement released earlier on Sunday, Mr Frank took a swipe at the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration, saying it had battered and bruised Nigeria’s economy. He also apologised to the immediate past President of Nigeria, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, for all the “tantrums and mistreatment orchestrated by me (Frank) against his person while he held sway at the helm of affairs of our great country”. He added that Nigeria’s current situation comes as a rude shock to many including himself who preached the change mantra assiduously. He, however, said he was consoled by the fact that Nigeria will get to its promise land someday but called on the President to immediately fix the problems of insecurity and corruption which the nation is currently facing. https://www.channelstv.com/2018/05/20/apc-kicks-says-timi-frank-not-a-party-chieftain/ |

http://thenationonlineng.net/adeyeye-dumps-pdp-says-hes-being-wooed-by-five-parties/ Barely 72 hours after losing the governorship ticket to Prof. Kolapo Olusola, former Minister of State for Works, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, has quit the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). Adeyeye said he was moving to another party to stop the continuity agenda of Fayose which he said was not in the best interest of Ekiti people but to keep the state in perpetual slavery. He disclosed that since he lost the PDP primary to Fayose’s anointed candidate (Olusola), not less than five parties have approached him to come over and contest on their platform. The former PDP national spokesman promised to reveal the platform he would use to contest for the governorship “in the next forty hours.” Adeyeye spoke on Thursday shortly after holding a meeting with members of his campaign team, the Prince Adedayo Adeyeye Movement (PAAM) at its headquarters along Ikere Road, Ado-Ekiti. He disclosed that he has been receiving solidarity messages from all parts of the world from people who were impressed with his performance at the PDP primary. The Ise-Ekiti prince said Fayose’s agenda was to do a third term in office by installing Olusola in a bid to perpetually corner Ekiti’s commonwealth. According to him, he would have won the PDP governorship primary “if not for the way Fayose intimidated delegates by forcing them to wear aso ebi to the venue.” Adeyeye condemned Fayose for standing up at a stage during the primary to monitor how delegates voted adding that he complained on the matter to the Chairman of the Electoral Panel, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa. Okowa, according to him, said there was nothing he could do about Fayose’s alleged intimidation of delegates inside the hall when he (Fayose) discovered that he (Adeyeye) was receiving more votes than earlier envisaged. He revealed that Fayose allegedly coerced the delegates to same on local government basis to monitor how they voted which intimidated many of them. Despite allegedly monitoring delegates, Adeyeye said many of the delegates voted against Olusola which enabled him (Adeyeye) to garner 771 votes. He claimed that the governor who had boasted that he (Adeyeye) would not get up to 50 votes was shocked that he got 771 votes which allegedly made him (Fayose) to embark on an investigation of those who voted against Olusola. Adeyeye accused Fayose of stealing Ekiti funds and using same to acquire property while majority of the people are wallowing in poverty. The former Minister claimed that Fayose has wasted N8 billion Ekiti funds on chartered flights in the last three and half years while the flyover project was jerked up from N5 billion to N17 billion. He said: “I am leaving the party because party can change but your state cannot change, party can change, your hometown cannot change. “I can’t be part of enslavement, I can’t be part of corruption, I can’t be part of those keeping our people in poverty but spend billions of Naira on chartered flights to Abuja every year but will be riding okada at home. “By seeking another platform, I want to tell him that he can’t be riding roughshod over Ekiti people people and he cannot turn Ekiti to one-man rule. “Our party leaders in Abuja were surprised at my performance at the primary despite the intimidation but I told them that I can change party, party may go into extinction but Ekiti will remain. “I will not, because of party affiliation, allow Ekiti to be destroyed. That is why we will take decision today on where we are going. “Since Tuesday, civil servants, teachers, local government workers have become sad. Ekiti has been enveloped in mourning. “What is paramount in my mind is to liberate Ekiti. Today, we will not reveal where we are going yet but where are no longer where we were (PDP).” |

A Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Olusegun Agbaje, yesterday alleged that former Governor of Ondo State, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, attempted to bribe him to change the results of the presidential and National Assembly elections in 2015. Agbaje who was one of the seven newly sworn-in RECs by the INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, said he was invited to Ondo State Government House at about 1.30a.m., for a meeting with the governor, which he turned down. The REC said: “In 2015, after the presidential election, about 1.30a.m., we were doing collation in the conference room in Ondo State conference hall. I got a call around 1.30a.m. The then VC of University of Agriculture, Abeokuta was our returning officer. “The call came from the governor of the state asking me at that time to quickly see him at the Government House in Ondo State. I said: ‘Your Excellency, this is a very ungodly hour. We had started the particular job of collation and any REC that is worth his salt will not abandon the returning officer in Ondo and go to Akure to meet a governor.’ “He said okay, if I could not come to Government House, he would meet me at my residence. I said: ‘Your Excellency, since I came to Ondo you have not visited me. Why would it be 1.30a.m. in the night. I told him I would not come’. “Less than 10 minutes later, a brother of mine working in the service in Abuja sent me a text which read that Segun Agbaje, the REC in Ondo State is now with Governor Mimiko collecting N50 million. “I felt I should share this because this is part of the areas that you can fall prey and if somebody is not very careful, you can get into trouble because I could have gone there, cameras could have been set for me which later in the morning, before we declare the result of National Assembly and presidential elections, which we were to forward to the national headquarters for final collation, I could get a call that if I don’t change the results that I was about to declare, that it would be published and then I would be in serious trouble.” https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2018/04/18/former-ondo-rec-accuses-mimiko-of-attempted-bribery/ |

A Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain and former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs Godsday Orubebe, has urged the party to embrace urgent reforms to prevent its demise. He lamented that the PDP “is still lost in depression and suffering from a Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), adding that the platform had crossed the bridge from pride to shame.” Orubebe noted that imposition, impunity, arrogance and greed were responsible for the party’s electoral defeat in 2015, stressing that the crisis rocking the platform was compounded by the mishandling of its last national convention. The party stalwart, who caused a stir during the collation of the 2015 presidential election results by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja, said the PDP would need vigour, courage and sustainable ideas to bounce back to reckoning. In an open letter to the PDP National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus, published in this edition, the former minister said the party must accept that it made mistakes while in power for 16 years. Chiding the party for not living up to expectation as a leading opposition platform, he said: “We have gone from a PARTY of Pride to a PARTY of SHAME and Gradually Receding into the ABYSS of political reality. For the simple reason that the nation is witnessing calls for the rise of a “third force,” we are fast becoming a Shadow of Ourselves.” In Orubebe’s reckoning, the PDP had regressed to the same imposition, impunity, arrogance and greed that heralded its electoral misfortune, adding that its leaders are not building a culture of democratic representation. Referring to the domineering role of the PDP governors, he said “the party is gradually coming under the control of certain individuals, who are exhibiting dangerous levels of undemocratic behaviours.” The former minister said unless the grandstanding and imposition gave way to a healthy competition, the party could avert a looming doom. He said the party should be liberated from the jaw of its exclusive funders, who have held it hostage. Orubebe said: One of the biggest challenges that the PDP faces is balancing its needs for funding with established egalitarian values and internal systems. If the party continues to be held hostage by few major donors, it will continue to find it difficult to instil the values that will endear us Nigerians. “We must take our appeal to Nigerians and through our reforms, let the party truly become a people-funded party. Small donations from millions of Nigerians will go a long way in the party’s financial requirements and will create the necessary atmosphere for true ownership among members of the party.” Urging the party leadership to embrace reforms, Orubebe said the leadership should re-organise to break down the silos of loyalty and allegiance within the party. He added: “It is my expectation that the necessary reforms will be put in place before it is too late to salvage what we have left.” http://thenationonlineng.net/pdp-descending-party-shame-says-orubebe/

Nigerians are happier than they were between 2014 and 2016, according to the World Happiness Report released by the United Nations on Wednesday. The World Happiness Report measures “subjective well-being” – how happy the people are, and why. The UN agency had ranked Nigerians the 95th happiest people in the world in 2017, based on its statistics gathered between 2014 and 2016. But in its latest report, which ranked 156 countries by their happiness levels, and 117 countries by the happiness of their immigrants, Nigeria moved four places up, bringing it to the 91st position. Finland is at the top of both rankings, having moved from its fifth position in 2017 to topple Norway, while Burundi ranked last. The US came in at 18th position, down from 14th place in 2017, while Britain ranked 19th and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), 20th. According to the report, “The overall rankings of country happiness are based on the pooled results from Gallup World Poll surveys from 2015-2017, and show both change and stability. “There is a new top ranking country, Finland, but the top ten positions are held by the same countries as in the last two years, although with some swapping of places. “Four different countries have held the top spot in the four most recent reports- Denmark, Switzerland, Norway and now Finland.” Mauritius, ranked 55th, is the happiest African country. The report listed obesity, the opioid crisis, and depression as three emerging health problems that threaten happiness, adding that “the evidence and discussion are focused on the United States, where the prevalence of all three problems has been growing faster and further than in most other countries.” The report also said migrating to another country provides for many people a major opportunity to obtain a happier life, especially to countries that accept them. “Many migrants will surely experience considerable happiness gains, particularly those who meet basic subsistence needs by migrating, as basic needs such as economic security and safety are vital conditions for happiness,” it read. https://www.thecable.ng/nigerians-are-getting-happier-according-to-world-happiness-index |
The attempt by lawmakers to legislate the order of election is not entirely new having travelled this route before in 2002. That year, the legislators attempted a similar amendment of the Electoral Act with the enactment of Section 15 of the Electoral Act 2002, in relation to fixing the order of elections into the offices of the President, National Assembly along with governors and state houses of assembly elections. At that time, the incumbent President withheld assent but was vetoed by the lawmakers. Their action was further challenged by the INEC in the case of NASS vs The President at the Federal High Court. The court subsequently struck down the said provision as unconstitutional and inconsistent with the provisions of sections 76, 116, 132 and 178 all of which stipulated that “Elections…. shall be held on a date to be appointed by the Independent National Electoral Commission”. Thereafter, the National Assembly appealed against the judgment at the Court of Appeal and again in a unanimous judgment, the court as per Justice Oguntade. (J.C.A) who delivered the leading judgment affirmed the decision of the lower court and even went further to state that, but for the fact of the wide disruption of our national life that may ensue given that the Act was already being used for the 2003 election, it would have nullified the entire Electoral Act but however declared the provision of section 15 of the 2002 Electoral Act unconstitutional, given the provisions of sections 76, 116, 132 and 178 as they were in the textual form at that time. Former President Goodluck Jonathan has “realised his mistakes” and has a role to play for the good of Nigeria, former President Olusegun Obasanjo said in his “special press statement” on Tuesday. He also apparently took a swipe at Nyesom Wike, although he did not mention the governor of Rivers state by name. Obasanjo, who asked President Muhammadu Buhari not to go for a second term, explained why he opposed Jonathan’s re-election in 2015 after writing a stinging letter, titled “Before it is too late”, to the incumbent then. “For Africa to move forward, Nigeria must be one of the anchor countries, if not the leading anchor country. It means that Nigeria must be good at home to be good outside. No doubt, our situation in the last decade or so had shown that we are not good enough at home; hence we are invariably absent at the table that we should be abroad,” he said. “All these led me to take the unusual step of going against my own political Party, PDP, in the last general election to support the opposite side. I saw that action as the best option for Nigeria. As it has been revealed in the last three years or so, that decision and the subsequent collective decision of Nigerians to vote for a change was the right decision for the nation. “For me, there was nothing personal, it was all in the best interest of Nigeria and, indeed, in the best interest of Africa and humanity at large. Even the horse rider then, with whom I maintain very cordial, happy and social relationship today has come to realise his mistakes and regretted it publicly and I admire his courage and forthrightness in this regard. He has a role to play on the sideline for the good of Nigeria, Africa and humanity and I will see him as a partner in playing such a role nationally and internationally, but not as a horse rider in Nigeria again. “The situation that made Nigerians to vote massively to get my brother Jonathan off the horse is playing itself out again. First, I thought I knew the point where President Buhari is weak and I spoke and wrote about it even before Nigerians voted for him and I also did vote for him because at that time it was a matter of “any option but Jonathan” (obj). But my letter to President Jonathan titled: “Before It Is Too Late” was meant for him to act before it was too late. “He ignored it and it was too late for him and those who goaded him into ignoring the voice of caution. I know that praise-singers and hired attackers may be raised up against me for verbal or even physical attack but if I can withstand undeserved imprisonment and was ready to shed my blood by standing for Nigeria, I will consider no sacrifice too great to make for the good of Nigeria at any time.No human leader is expected to be personally strong or self-sufficient in all aspects of governance.” Obasanjo said his opinion that the two leading parties — APC and PDP — are “wobbling” remains the same, alluding to the choice of Wike’s candidate, Uche Secondus, as PDP chairman as evidence. “I have had occasion in the past to say that the two main political parties – APC and PDP – were wobbling. I must reiterate that nothing has happened to convince me otherwise. If anything, I am reinforced in my conviction. The recent show of PDP must give grave and great concern to lovers of Nigeria,” he said. “To claim, as has been credited to the chief kingmaker of PDP, that for procuring the Supreme Court judgement for his faction of the Party, he must dictate the tune all the way and this is indeed fraught with danger. If neither APC nor PDP is a worthy horse to ride to lead Nigeria at this crucial and critical time, what then do we do?” He called for a “Coalition for Nigeria” to chart the way forward. https://www.thecable.ng/obasanjo-hails-jonathan-realising-mistakes-takes-swipe-wike |
Mmmmm. Advice from a reader in PT Akpabio you cannot control a sitting Governor. Respect yourself and let the man run his term, you had 8 long years during which you taught your predecessor Obong Attah the same lesson you are about to learn afresh. The man you call your godson is now bigger than you by virtue of the position he occupies, you represent one out of three constituencies, he governs all three. Respect yourself or you may get burnt |
