The Chairman of the South East Governors Forum and governor of Ebonyi State, Engr. David Nweze Umahi, has expressed shock over the choice of former governor of Anambra State, Mr Peter Obi as the running mate to the presidential candidate of PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubarkar without consulting with the leaders of the zone.

Umahi said the earlier statement quoting him as congratulating Peter Obi was never with his knowledge and dissociated himself from the statement, saying that the position of the entire South East zone has always been that any position zoned to the South East must be deliberated upon by the leaders of the zone.

He said in the case of the appointment of Mr. Obi as Atiku’s running mate, neither the governors, nor Igbo leaders were consulted, a situation he said was a great departure from the earlier agreement.

The governor appologized to Nigerians and Ndigbo for the statement, adding that his Chief Press Secretary acted without his knowledge and wish to state categorically that he has nothing personally against Peter Obi or any other person emerging as the running mate to the presidential candidate of PDP.

He said that any position zoned to Ndigbo must be discussed and agreement reached so that the right thing is done in line with the perculiar nature of Igbo politics and their quest for politics of inclusiveness.

Ayodele Fayose, governor of Ekiti state, says he might dump the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

In a statement he issued on Monday, Fayose said he has no regret supporting Aminu Tambuwal for the party’s presidential ticket.

Former Vice- President Atiku Abubakar defeated Tambuwal to clinch the ticket.

But the governor said he had no apology teaming up with Nyesom Wike, his Rivers state counterpart, to support Tambuwal.

Wike was one of the major backers of Tambuwal in the race.

“We have no regret aligning with Governor Wike to support Governor Tambuwal for the presidential ticket and no apologies either,” Fayose said.

“We kept the party alive and strong when most men became ladies. We never compromised. If any group feels it can do it alone, we will see how far they can go.

“I may renounce my membership of the party if the need arises. In the main time, myself and others will continue with our consultations while watching the turn of event.

“We cannot but appreciate leaders that have intervened so far, but this release became necessary to avoid fresh crisis or misrepresentation.”

Gboyega Oyetola, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, on Thursday swept the two polling units in Ile-Ife, in Osun state, where rerun elections were ordered by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to determine the winner.

Ife South, Mr Oyetola got 283 votes, while the PDP candidate got 15 votes.

In Ife North(Unit 2), APC got 126 votes, while the PDP candidate, Ademola Adeleke got just two votes.

In both polling units, polling agents of the PDP candidate were conspicuously absent.

The result of the voting at Ward 5 Unit 7 at Alekuwodo in Osogbo also favoured the APC candidate. He got 299 votes, while the PDP candidate got 165 votes.

The PDP candidate came into the rerun election with an advantage of 353 votes.

But from the unconfirmed tally of votes from the seven polling units, he seemed to have lost his pole position to the APC candidate, by a very wide margin.

Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike yesterday slammed some Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential aspirants for alleged opposition to Port Harcourt as venue for the party’s National Convention October 5 and 6.

He said such aspirants, by their action, showed “they are against the economic interest of the state and Niger Delta.”

Besides, he said such aspirants have failed to live up to their campaign for the restructuring of the country.

PDP is billed to hold a convention to elect its presidential candidate on October 5 and 6 in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital. Thirteen aspirants are jostling for the ticket.

The Port Harcourt venue, endorsed by some aspirants, has not gone down well with other aspirants.

Describing the opposition to Port Harcourt as strange, Wike said there was no other way to explain such cold feeling towards holding the convention in Port Harcourt apart from the fact that the aspirants involved had no economic interest of Rivers and Niger Delta at heart.

He said: “Those who are against the PDP convention holding in Port Harcourt don’t have the the economic interest of Rivers and Niger Delta at heart.

“If you are telling the people of the state and by extension Niger Delta that you don’t want such event to hold in their domain as an aspirant, how will you act when you become a president? How do you expect the people you are telling that you don’t like their state to vote for you during the election?”

The governor described as worrisome that the same people who have been traversing the length and breadth of the country calling for the restructuring of Nigeria were kicking against the choice of Port Harcourt as venue for the convention.

He asked: “Why are they not acting in tandem with their campaign for the restructuring of Nigeria? From their opposition to Port Harcourt, it means the restructuring campaign is a mere lip service”.

All the aspirants, he said, will enjoy a level playing field, insisting that the choice of Port Harcourt is not meant to give any aspirant an edge over others.

The governor said: “Every aspirant will be given a level playing field.

Holding the convention in Port Harcourt does not mean anybody will have undue advantage. What it will do for the state is that it will boost its local economy because groundnut, sellers of water in satchets and food vendors will have more sales. Hoteliers will also record increased business.

“That is the only thing Rivers State stands to gain from holding the convention in Port Harcourt. And anybody who is against Port Harcourt hosting the event does not like the state. He is against the economic interest of the state”.

According to Wike, the person who will emerge the candidate of the party will emerge on the basis of his political clout and not on any other consideration.

He said that what PDP members need at the moment “is not to bicker over the choice of convention venue but to work in unity to achieve the goal of the party which he said is to wrest power from the governing All Progressives Congress (APC).

“We need to work together, we don’t need any division at this moment. Our goal must be to win in 2019.”

RIVERS State governor, Nyesom Wike,yesterday, alleged that many presidential aspirants of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP,were moles planted in the party by the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.

This was even as he said some aspirants who have since picked nomination forms to vie for the party’s forth coming presidential primary, billed to take place in Port-Harcourt, were not presidential materials but merely making noise with a view to seek settlement from viable ones.

Even as he alleged that there were moles among the returnee presidential aspirants,he vowed not to expose them by calling their names.

Wike, who spoke while featuring in the Channel Television morning programmes, Sunrise Daily, insisted that not all the current presidential aspirants of the PDP were genuine, saying they mere to carry out the script of the ruling party with a view to destabilizing the PDP.

He revealed how he outsmarted the ruling party during the last PDP elective convention that produced the party’s current chairman, Uche Secondus,contrary the APC expectation,promising that the PDP would replicate the same feat during the coming national convention in his home state.

He debunked insinuations in some quarters that he was working to install his preferred presidential candidate of the party,during the convention, saying he had no particular candidate in mine just as he promised a level-playing exercise.

The governor also challenged aspirants trying to use their continued stay and loyalty to the PDP after its 2015 defeat to whip sentiment to prove the level of PDP success in their states during the 2015 election.

“It’s not because you have been on the party since 1998,it’s not a criteria.The criteria is ‘I’m a presidential material, I can make a change in this country.’

“It does not mean that anybody who collects form will want to be the president of Nigeria. It’s not correct and I don’t want to be deceived by that. It’s just like for example today in Rivers State, it’s PDP and someone who even knows that he does not want to run for governorship under the PDP would want to seek attention so the governor can approach him and say ‘look, why don’t you step down and let’s talk and he now says yes, I will. ..

While denying that he would influence delegates to swing in favour of his preferred aspirant,the governor said:”No,members of the National Assembly are statutory delegates, House of Assembly members are statutory delegates, council chairmen are statutory delegates, party chairmen are statutory delegates and the only thing you can say is the election of national delegates which is at least, one per local government. So how do you influence that?”

Speaking on expected grievances by some committed members of the party if presidential ticket is given to any returnee member,he said: “You know, I tell people when you say those who betrayed you,those who left the party, I would asked that you that was in the party, what did you do and what was the result like in your state during the 2015 election?”

“Yes,hele left the party before the election and you stayed behind but what was the result of the party in your state if you claim you didn’t betray the party? He asked.

When his Channel Television interviewers asked if he was talking about someone in specific, he responded thus:”No, you are saying that if those who returned to the party are given the ticket, that may anger the persons who have been loyal and remained in the party.”My question is that, you that remains in the party, what was the result of the party in your state in the last election in 2015? ”

“Remember that all the presidential aspirants are from the North. Some of the aspirants left the party prior to the 2015 elections and some remained in the party. And my question now is you that remained in the party, what was the result of the party in your state during the election? He further asked.

He said: “You see, I have told people that I cannot buy such sentiment. I prefer dealing with people who will tell me ‘look, I’m not so comfortable with this and therefore, I will not participate in it’ than you that says ‘there’s no problem, I’m okay with it and turn around to do something different.'”

According to Governor Wike,”Most of them betrayed the party. If you look at the PDP today and look at some of those declaring interest to contest under it, you will know that some of those who stayed back are not presidential materials. And because you remained, you want to be given the ticket? ”

When asked he can reconcile his earlier promise of a level-playing ground for all the aspirants and his assertion that some were not presidential materials, he said:”

When I said level playing ground, it means that everybody should have the opportunity without favouring a particular candidate. That again, does not mean that as I am today, I cannot reach those whom I know are serious who want to run on the platform of the PD.”

“That is why I’m a politician. You don’t expect that as a governor, I shouldn’t be able to read and understand the political situation to say for instance,” among the three of you, this may be a better candidate than the other.

“I should be able to look at all the aspirants, their presentations, their backgrounds and their antecedents and I should be able to know among the “A, B and C who is serious and who’s not,” he added.

Wike dismissed insinuations in some quarters that he has the ace to who picks the PDP’s presidential ticket since the presidential primary election is holding in his state.

“I am just a delegate. How can I be more than a delegate, how? The convention is having all the 36 states of the country. I’m not a member of the National Planning Committee of the PDP, I’m only giving them venue for the convention. I’m not going to be the Chairman of the Convention Planning Committee, I’m not going to be a member.”

On what he would do to avoid defection of some aspirants that may lose out”, Governor Wike said:”If you believe in the party, if you believe you want to have a change of government, then you must not say ‘it must be me.’ If you believe that you are a committed member of the PDP, why should you say ‘it must be me?'”

Even when he denied having bias for any particular candidate, the Rivers State governor said:” In any case, if you choose to do the election in Lagos State, people must have interest and if you choose to do it in Edo State, people must have interest”, adding:”Those who will want to leave the party because they didn’t get the ticket of the party are those who were not committed to the party from day one.”

He said leaders of the PDP would do their best to prevent the APC moles from having their ways so to avoid the experience of the party in the hands of its former national chairman, Alhaji Ali Modu Sheriff.

“Take for example, you remember when we came out with the idea of Modu Sheriff, some people criticised it and we said we did what we did believing that it was in the interest of the party. And when we saw that our judgement was wrong,we never hesitated to come up to say look,we can’t allow this. If we allow this, the party would be destroyed. And we stood firm,even those who claimed to have said they never wanted Sheriff were those who went back work with the same Sheriff that they never wanted.But we stood firm to say ‘no,we can’t work with Sheriff and we fought. We thank God that Sheriff left.

He tasked members to see the interest of the party above their personal ones:”The point we are making is if you believe in this party,and you really believe that you really want a change of this government and that this government does not mean well for Nigerians and then you don’t get the ticket tomorrow, why would you say I’m leaving the party?The interest of the nation must subsume. And that’s the point we are making here,that anybody who believes in this party must be able to make sacrifice,”he said.

Asked whether he was referring to Gombe State governor, Ibrahim Dankwanbo,when he alleged that some members that remained did not contribute votes to the party in the 2015 presidential election, Wike said: “No,Dankwanbo is one governor and my colleague that I respect. He’s very intelligent and has been a committed member of this party. So I could not refer to him like that.”

He tackled the APC-led federal government over what he referred to as its claim of fighting corruption than any what PDP did in its 16-year rule.

“This government is talking about fighting corruption.This government said since 1999,PDP elevated corruption, what do they mean by this? Somebody was a speaker for eight years under PDP, somebody was a governor for eight years under PDP, somebody was a minister for eight years under PDP and these people today are in APC. The point I’m trying to make here is that Saraki left PDP to form APC, Tambuwal left PDP to form APC, the same with Kwankwaso,Atiku and so many of them and APC accepted them but the moment they said ‘we are going back to our party, you now turned around to say no,these are corrupt people’. The same corrupt people you said helped you to victory!”

He also dismissed insinuations that money would play significant roles in who picks the PDP presidential ticket at the convention.

“It’s not all about money.When we came back from meeting, when the national chairman said the convention would be in Port-Harcourt,before I came back,one of the presidential aspirants tried to take over the entire hotels in Port-Harcourt for the convention and I said this can’t be possible, that we can’t allow this to happen. I said if we allowed one presidential aspirant to take over the entire hotels in Port-Harcourt, then it means that other aspirants would have problem.

“And as a governor, and other governors are coming here, they are my guests,the delegates that will come here are my guests,then the same presidential aspirant that tried to take over the entire hotels in Port-Harcourt now went back to plant this in the media that the government of Rivers State has taken over the entire hotels,and said ‘look, we are no longer comfortable with the choice of Port-Harcourt as venue for PDP convention.

” I have to say this so that people will know.I have no alternative to PDP. I have said it severally and that was why I said Secondus would be the best for chairmanship and today,I have been vindicated. I knew that people were planted to be chairman of PDP and by now,PDP would have collapsed,”he said.

Governor Wike,while also talking on recent reorganisation of the Police Special Anti-Robbery Squad,SARS, said there was no restructuring in SARS as claimed by the federal government even as he alleged that the police would e used to rig elections in his state.

“The police would not only be used against me,they would work against us.

“Take for example, what happened in August 18th,this year during the bye-election in Port-Harcourt State Constituency 3,it was very shameful. We had a security council meeting where o told them for the very first time that why not prove to Nigerians that you are prepared to hold a credible election.

“I have said several times that of we want to have a credible election,if INEC and police agreed that there will be credible election, it will be. And my own Commissioner of Police told me that if he cannot supervise ordinary eight wards,which is just 142 units, then how would he supervise 4472 units? This was a matter of interest and they showed it clearly.

“And when you are talking about eight wards,we are not talking about wards in very difficult terrain. But eight wards within Port-Harcourt Municipality.

“The police never wanted a free and fair election, they wanted to guide a particular party to win. And it was for the first time that the INEC would come out to say ‘look, we saw this happen. In fact,the REC of Akwa Ibom was there, the REC of Bayelsa was there and the REC of Rivers State,three RECs for election in eight wards.The point I’m trying to make is that if three RECs could supervise election and it was not possible, what would happen when it will be the entire state? Police came out and led people to cart away materials.

“Let us not deceive ourselves in this country, do you know that since the 18th of August, I have never seen my Commissioner of Police.I think it’s his conscience keeping him away from me,” he further said.

The Yobe State governor, Ibrahim Gaidam, has endorsed the nomination of the national secretary of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, Mai Mala Buni, to fly the party’s governorship ticket in the state.

The decision was taken after the leadership of the party at the state, local government and ward levels vested the responsibility of selecting the flag-bearer in the state governor.

Apart from endorsement of Mr Buni, the governor also endorsed the current Senate Majority Leader, Ahmed Lawan, for Senatorial ticket, just as he endorsed his spokesman, Abdullahi Bego, for Jakusko/Bade Federal Constituency.

On Friday, hundreds of youths from Yobe Zone A had thronged the Government House, Damaturu to call on Ibrahim Gaidam, as he nears the end of his second term in office, to contest for the Senate seat for Yobe Zone A.

The youths were received at the Government House by Abubakar Ali, the deputy governor.

The leader of the youths, Umar Kalli, who presented a letter urging Mr Gaidam to contest for the Senate, said people in Yobe Zone A, not just the youths, are convinced that Mr Gaidam is best suited to represent them in the Senate given his track record of performance as governor and his personal leadership qualities.

“We believe that although Governor Gaidam is successfully completing his second term in office, we cannot allow him to go and rest. We need him in the Senate because we believe he is the best person who can represent our people there”, Mr Kalli said.

Mr Gaidam reportedly answered their call and decided to vie for Senate, against the former governor Bukar Abba Ibrahim.

Oil magnate, Tonye Dele-Cole, is poised to fly the flag of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Rivers State governorship election next year, following the adoption of his candidacy by stakeholders at their apex leadership caucus meeting in Lagos on Thursday.

Observers had expected the ticket to be a straight fight between the Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr.Dakuku Peterside and Senator Magnus Abe.

That, however, was not to be as the Lagos meeting, presided over by Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi, who doubles as APC leader in Rivers State, gave Cole the nod.

Other party leaders at the Lagos meeting included oil magnate, Chief Dumo Lulu-Briggs; the Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Dakuku Peterside; a member of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the party, Chief Sam Jaja and Senator Andrew Uchendu (Rivers East).

Informed sources said that Amaechi wanted a ‘neutral’ candidate that would be largely acceptable to the mainstream APC in the state as well as the Abe faction of the party.

Amaechi has been pushing for a candidate from the riverine part of the state to take over from the incumbent governor, Nyesom Wike. The riverine area has not produced governor since 1999.

Cole, an architect and Chief Executive of Sahara Energy, is a son of Dr. Partick Dele Cole, a former managing director of Daily Times and a former ambassador of Nigeria to Brazil.

He is from Abonnema-Kalabari, headquarters of Akuku-Toru (rivernine) Local Government Area.

He attended the Lagos meeting along with Peterside who was the party’s candidate in the 2015 election.

The NIMASA boss welcomed Cole’s endorsement yesterday as did Abe, who was not at the meeting. But Abe said he was not aware that Cole was an APC member.

Peterside, in his response, said: “Our leader, Rt. Hon. Amaechi,” whose leadership they all subscribed to, made a decision on who members of the party in Rivers State should back for the office of governor of Rivers State in 2019, with the lot falling on his friend and brother in Christ (Cole).

“I made a commitment to the group earlier to stand by whatever decision the leader makes in the overall interest of the party and Rivers State. I reiterated my position yesterday (on Thursday) in the leadership meeting. I thus stand by the decision on Tonye Cole.

“We have toiled from 2013 to date (a period of five years) and have made sacrifices and lost lives in the course of enthroning the kind of government we want in Rivers State; a government that will guarantee peace, unity and prosperity. In the course of the struggle, we bonded as one indivisible family under God.

“The decision by the leader has been met with mixed reactions, which is expected. My appeal is that we allow the greater interest of APC and Rivers State to prevail.

“To those who believe in the vision I shared in the past five years, the leadership I gave at various times and the path of loyalty to the cause I have chosen over time, I urge you all to stand by the Leader, the party and the ordinary people of Rivers State in support of Tonye Cole.

“I personally pledge my loyalty to the Leader (who is to me family) and the decision he has made. I enjoin all my supporters to queue behind our leader (Amaechi) and ensure total victory for our party.”

Peterside also prayed for unity among the members of APC and victory in the 2019 elections.

Abe, a former Secretary to the Rivers State Government (SSG), who hails from Bera-Ogoni in the upland part, said on the phone yesterday that he was “not aware of any meeting of APC stakeholders in Rivers State that has been held and endorsed anybody.”

He added: “I have said it on several occasions that anyone who is interested in serving Rivers people should come forward and offer themselves and make their plans known.

“If a Tonye Cole has been so endorsed, it is a very welcome development. He should come forward and offer himself and make himself known to Rivers people.

“I, Senator Magnus Ngei Abe, have said I am going to vie for the governorship ticket of our party, the APC, and I want to repeat that I will vie for the governorship ticket of APC.

“Every other Rivers son or daughter who believes that he or she has the capacity and the experience to offer the needed services that our state needs at this time is welcome.

“As far as I know, I have not known Tonye Cole to be a member of the party (APC). But if he has decided to join the party as to contest for the governorship, it is a welcome development.”

The National Working Committee, NWC, of All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA, declared, Thursday that the party would heartily welcome the former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar if he decides to join the party.

National Chairman, APGA, Dr. Victor Oye, who made the declaration while speaking with Vanguard in an exclusive interview in Abuja, said, Atiku, was free to dump his Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, for APGA to pursue whatever political aspirations.

Dr. Oye, who noted that the 2019 presidential hopeful was yet to approach the party over the issue, however, added that freedom of association is permitted under democracy and if the former Vice President desires to associate with APGA, he is welcome.

It would be recalled the campaign office of former Vice President recently debunked the story from a section of the media that Atiku has defected from the PDP to All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA.

Atiku’s press team described the report as a malicious attempt to confuse the public about the aspiration of Atiku ahead of the forthcoming presidential primaries election of the PDP.

But the APGA National Chairman, who did not foreclose the possibility of the of Wazirin Adamawa’s defection to the party said, “He, Atiku, is free to join APGA, is he not a Nigerian? We will welcome him.

Asked if the party will give Atiku automatic ticket to vie for 2019 presidency under its platform, Oye said, “Not just joining the party, if he eventually joins, he will follow the rules of the party. “

“The party has a constitution; he will subject himself to the constitution of the party. That is all. There is no two ways about it. But we will receive him 1,000% if he decided to come. He is a Nigerian. He doesn’t have any criminal records.”

Reading out the collated results, Mr Fadam, a professor, said the

“ADC received 1754 votes.”

“APC received 119,489 votes.”

“APP eceived 11,717 votes.”

“DA got 467 votes.”

“GPN received 33, 079 votes.”

“KP received 240 votes.”

“MMN received 429 votes.”

“MPN received 322 votes.”

“NNPP received 22,896 votes.”

“PDC received 1,203 votes.”

“PDP received 50,256 votes.”

“SDP received 3,800 votes.”

He said a total of 256,763 votes were cast, out of which 245,652 were valid and 11,111 invalid.

“That Lawan Yahaya Gumau, having fulfilled all the requirements of the law and scored the highest votes, is hereby declared as returned,” Mr Fadam said.



And PDP could not secure 25% of the votes cast
